Portugal. The Man guitarist Eric Howk talked with Matt Pelsor about life in the band now versus before “Feel It Still” became the international mega-hit that it is. They also discuss the song “Who's Gonna Stop Me,” featuring Weird Al Yankovic, as well as Eric's perspective of being a wheelchair-bound professional musician in a world that doesn't always accommodate him.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got the frontman for a band that recently made a welcome return after a long absence, and the producer who helped him find the sounds and songs to do it: John Gourley and Jeff Bhasker. Gourley is the singer for Portugal. The Man, which started making music in their home state of Alaska back in the early 2000s before finding success and relocating to Portland, Oregon. The band has an impressive catalog that runs the pop gamut, and weirdly they hit it huge pretty deep into their career, with the 2017 song “Feel It Still,” which is still on pop radio six years later. Just this year, PTM finally released a new album, called Chris Black Changed My Life, which both mourns and celebrates the band's close friend, for whom it's also named. The album was also partly inspired by the daughter of Gourley and his bandmate Zoe Manville; Frances Gourley has a rare genetic disorder that's touched on in this chat. But the album and Gourley's story is by no means grim: He's all about celebrating life, as you'll hear on this track, “Summer of Luv,” which features some assistance from another recent Talkhouse guest, Unknown Mortal Orchestra. You'll also hear the fingerprints of producer Jeff Bhasker on that track. Bhasker is best known for co-writing and co-producing smash hits like Kanye West's 808s and Heartbreak and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Mark Ronson's “Uptown Funk.” He's one of several names that Portugal. The Man brought in to help realize Chris Black Changed My Life. The two talk about how that process worked, and in particular how Gourley is—unlike some songwriters—always happy to have more creative voices in the room. They also chat about which of them is a better singer, about playing at the Hollywood Bowl, about Gourley's life-changing jaw injury, and about Gourley's daughter Frances and the challenges they face. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to John Gourley and Jeff Bhasker for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great written pieces at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!
Over the four seasons of The Load Out music podcast, we've had a variety of artists on the show that have ranged from Rock-and-Roll Hall-of-Fame inductees like John Oates, Steve Cropper and Chris Hillman; to Grammy winners, alt-country stars, longtime record executives and noted rap producers. On the latest episode, we welcome an up-and-coming band from New York City that's a little bit rock, a little bit pop, and a little bit electronic music—a very different twist for our listeners. Rebel Kicks—comprised of talented, multi-instrumentalist brothers Anthony and Steven Babino—have shared stages with the likes of the Foo Fighters, Blink-182, Mac Miller, Iggy Azalea, Incubus and more. The band's new EP features the well-received singles “Silhouette” along with “Electrophoria,” a hard-hitting, groove-centric track inspired by the recent growth of artificial intelligence. The band drew its name from a line in the song ‘Feel It Still' by the band Portugal. The Man—"I'm a rebel just for kicks"—and have gone on to draw comparisons with Grouplove, Portugal and The Killers. Welcome to the Babino brothers!
Evan and Eric hit the mics to review Portugal. The Man's ninth studio album Chris Black Changed My Life. Can it top the insane hype around Woodstock and standout track "Feel It Still"? Well, the lead single on this one, "Dummy," was featured in a Taco Bell ad. Is that good or bad? You decide! Portugal. The Man tracks previewed in this episode include: "Dummy" "Summer of Luv (featuring Unknown Mortal Orchestra)" "Champ (featuring Edgar Winter)" Next up, Eric revisits The Bearded Mack and shares his thoughts on the company at this point in time and selects his favorite scents from their Beard Oil Sample Pack. Note: The Icy Mack scent was not available when Eric ordered his sample pack. But he tried this scent previously, and it's pretty enjoyable. The Beard Mack Sample Pack Scents Ranked The Gamblin' Mack (Leather & Frankincense) The Deadwood Mack (Tobacco, Musk & Leather) The Corner Mack (Citrus Cologne) Mad Mack (Tobacco & Bay Leaf) The Roaring 20's Mack (Barbershop) The Ravager Mack (Grapefruit & Patchouli) The Command Mack (Fresh Citrus & Mint) Tropical Storm Mack (Mango & Lime) The Sleepwalker Mack (Lavender & Vanilla) Finally, the boys discuss Evan's recent decision to quit drinking and Eric rates the Non-Alcoholic Chocolate Milk Dark Brew from Untitled Art, which has a wide selection of N/A brews. As always, thanks for listening and stay tuned for more new episodes of Beats, Beards & Brews!

John Gourley is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the band Portugal. The Man, a group who after five independently released albums and another three on Atlantic Records, found crossover success around the world with their 2017 album ‘Woodstock' and it's hit song "Feel It Still” which scored the group a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group performance in 2018. Like many in the creative community the band's career was put into neutral during the pandemic, but they are back on the road this summer (2023) with a new album 'Chris Black Changed My Life'.

I have these grouped by genre starting off with Rock Songs. The first one is “Feel It Still” by Portugal The Man released in 2017, and “Handclap” by Fitz & The Tantrums in 2016. We all know the famous lyrics that get everybody to clap…”Cause you don't even know, I can make your hands clap. “Best Day Of My Life by American Authors, released in 2014. This is a great song that you could play as a recessional song, that is after the “I Do's”. Lyrics include…No, just don't wake me now. This is gonna be the best day of my life. Popular dance song, “Shut Up And Dance” by Walk The Moon in 2014. With the lyrics…Just keep your eyes on me. I said you're holding back, She said shut up and dance with me. Next up are R&B wedding songs from the 2010s with “Finesse” by Bruno Mars featuring Cardi B. “Can't Feel My Face” by The Weeknd, in 2015 with the lyrics…I can't feel my face when I'm with you. But I love it, but I love it. “Love On Top” by Beyonce in 2013 with the lyrics…You're the one I can always call. When I need to make everything stop. Finally, you put my love on top. This can be played throughout your wedding day, it is very popular. So is her other song “Drunk In Love” with her husband Jay Z, also released in 2013. Make sure you play those two songs if you are a big Beyonce fan. Her recently released Renaissance album also has some great dance tunes on it as well. “Suit And Tie” by Justin Timberlake featuring Jay Z, in 2013, is a great song for the garter toss if you want to have it, or just a tribute to all the men that are in the wedding or reception. Lyrics include…And as long as I've got my suit and tie, I'ma leave it all on the floor tonight. The controversial song, “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring Pharrell and T.I. was released in 2013. If this is still really popular in your area it is a great dance tune. “All Of Me” by John Legend in 2013 is one of the greatest R&B love songs of all time. With the lyrics…You're my end and my beginnin'. Even when I lose, I'm winnin'. Another great love song, by Miguel, called “Adorn” in 2012, with the lyrics…Let my love adorn you, baby. Don't you ever Don't you let nobody tell you different. A great dance tune by Usher, featuring Pitbull, is “DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love”. It was released in 2010 with the lyrics…Gon' get you right, ‘Cause baby tonight, DJ got us fallin' in love again. Another one of his famous dance tunes is “OMG” featuring Will.I.Am in 2010. This closes out the R&B. Next up are the Dance tunes. Starting off with “Something Just Like This” by the Chainsmokers and Coldplay released in 2017. I really love this as a cocktail hour or dinner background song. One of the greatest entrance songs, into the reception, is “This Is What I Came For” by Calvin Harris featuring Rhianna released in 2016. Lyrics include…Baby,
Despite their differences and against all odds, an aspiring singer-songwriter and a soldier fall hopelessly in love. Cassie (Sofia Carson), a struggling singer-songwriter, and Luke ( Nicholas Galitzine), a troubled Marine, agree to marry solely for military benefits. The movie is based on a novel by Tess Wakefield, and is something of a soap opera-esque take on a military marriage entered into for the benefitsIt's one of those movies that regardless of the fact you know the ending, it's still inspiring and tear jerking to watch. The actors and actresses portrayed the life and situations to the best of their accuracy while still keeping the storyline center focus. It's a beautiful story of twisted love. From beginning to end it's hard to really know if they will finally let there guards down. But you start to get an incling that they don't despise eachother anymore and from there the friendship and love grows. They learn slowly to overcome their differences of opinions and political views. It doesn't come without its complications but it's a movie for teens and young adults in the world right now. Not everything in the movie is relatable but it gives them real life struggles like Type 1 diabetes, childhood trauma for both of them, drug addiction, PTSD, having to learn how to renavigate life after almost getting a leg blown off; letting eachother help the other one and the loss of a close friend to both of them. And it let's you watch as seemingly normal people try to navigate those challenges. Sofia and Nicholas did an amazing job.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

In our series premiere Shannon and Nick dove into the discography of one of their favorite bands, Portugal. The Man. Portugal. The Man is a progressive indie rock band from Wascilla Alaska, relocated to Portland, Oregon. Once known as the band that released an album every year, they've settled down and have released eight albums from 2006-2017. In this episode we discuss their hit single "Feel It Still," the folklore surrounding their early studio sessions, and how they changed from a psychedelic jam sound to a mainstream radio band.
With their peculiar name and remote place of origin, Alaskan experimental indie pop band Portugal. The Man are an unlikely success story. After heading southward to the musical hub of Portland, Oregon, the group -- co-founded by the duo of John Gourley and Zach Carothers -- delivered a series of unique, artfully crafted independent albums throughout the late 2000s, touring hard and eventually signing a deal with Atlantic in 2010. The band's diligence paid off during their major-label tenure with each subsequent album gaining them a wider fan base and increased acclaim. On 2013's Evil Friends, they forged a collaboration with producer Danger Mouse, who again helped out on the group's politically driven eighth album, 2017's Woodstock, which yielded the Grammy-winning hit single "Feel It Still."* JC got a chance to sit down with Carothers to talk about their unlikely rise to the pop charts, their charitable work, and the future of the music industry. All of that and much more on this week's theFIVE10 Podcast! *bio written by Ned Raggett

We are human and we are programmed to feel these emotions: negative or positive: if we were not supposed to feel these emotions, they would have never existed at the first place. But no one gets that. People are so into spreading positivity that they just ask you to lock up and suppress all the “negative emotions” which does more harm than good.

My guest this week is the always-a-good-time, shred loving guitarist Eric Howk of the band Portugal. The Man. Eric is a veteran of the Seattle music scene, a great player, a smart musician and writer, and an awesome asset to any band I've seen him play in. Eric is also a wheelchair user which creates touring situations where awkward and seemingly inconvenient situations for other touring musicians can quickly turn in to near nightmares. But, my man is a champion and a true lover of music and he's unstoppable. Period. Portugal. The Man is writing for the follow-up to their 2017 album, Woodstock, which featured the Grammy Award winning song Feel It Still and exposed the band to a much larger audience. We're excited to see what happens next and what kind of shred Eric commits to the new material. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/support

This week on "State of Wonder," we remember the life and legacy of the ground-breaking writer Ursula K. Le Guin, and then we talk with Oregon's three Grammy nominees: Portugal. The Man, The Decemberists' side project Offa Rex, and Randy Porter and Nancy King.Remembering Ursula K Le GuinPortland lost a living legend this week. Ursula K. Le Guin passed away on Monday at the age of 88 in her Northwest home. Her writing not only spanned genres, it tore down the barriers that separated them, helping to elevate science fiction and fantasy into "literature" — to say nothing of opening up fiction to women writers and women protagonists. The worlds Le Guin created were places of refuge for those who felt like outsiders and places that challenged readers to think differently and expand their imaginations. In this segment, we listen to: 2:04 - A remembrance from April Baer 5:50 - A conversation with Le Guin at Wordstock in 2015, shortly after the release of a new version of her guide to writing, “Steering the Craft,” in which she spoke about her writing process and what it means to “push back” as a woman writer. 13:57 - A conversation with Le Guin's eldest child, Elisabeth Le Guin, a professor of musicology at UCLA, about the inspiration that is her mother, and what it was like to sit around the dinner table with such a fierce woman. You can listen to the full interview here. 22:38 - A conversation with Molly Gloss, the author of numerous books including "The Hearts of Horses" and "Wild Life," who met Le Guin in 1981 and has been a close friend and writing peer since. You can find the full conversation on Think Out Loud.Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still" Is Up for Best Pop Group Performance - 29:17“Feel It Still,” the first single from Portugal. The Man’s newest album, “Woodstock,” set new records at the top of multiple charts, becoming the biggest crossover hit since Gotye’s “Somebody that I Used to Know.” Now the song has snagged Portugal. The Man a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Last summer, the band played an exclusive live set at the OPB studio and sat down to talk about the album. You can watch videos of their opbmusic session here. The Decemberists' Collaboration with Olivia Chaney Gets Nominated for Best Folk Album - 35:57The Decemberists may have finally met their match. The band teamed up with British singer Olivia Chaney under the name Offa Rex — a reference to an Anglo-Saxon king. The album, produced by local whiz Tucker Martine, is called “The Queen of Hearts,” and it's up for the Grammy for Best Folk Album. We invited Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy into the studio, and got Chaney on the line from England, to talk about how this dream team came to be. Randy Porter and Nancy King Contend for Best Jazz Vocal Album with "Porter Plays Porter" - 44:32Last but not least in the trio of Oregon Grammy contenders is the jazz pianist Randy Porter. Porter was first exposed to the music of his namesake, Cole Porter, at age 20, when he worked on a revue of the great American composer’s work. Randy Porter has since become a successful pianist known for his impeccable technique, and now his trio has teamed up with one of the region’s jazz treasures, vocalist Nancy King, on the record “Porter Plays Porter with Nancy King.” It’s up for the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

This time around we’re chatting with Gilbert Bates, author of a book I stumbled across earlier this year called “Love and the Three Levels of Consciousness”. Gil has authored a couple other books on similar themes, but this is the one that we focus on for the purpose of this conversation. The book is about the three levels of the brain, the brainstem, the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex, and how early emotional trauma is registered as a painful sensation in the lower brain, the brainstem. The need to repress this pain from conscious awareness leads to a disconnection between the cognitive brain and the social and emotional brain. Gil posits that the disconnection between these three distinct levels as well as the lack of essential input from the deeper sensing/feeling brain areas are the root cause of nearly all mental illness, and the reason why humans have so much trouble relating to each other in loving ways. We also talk a bit about how to heal ourselves with primal therapy, which is a therapeutic theory and process invented by Dr. Arthur Janov that’s designed to take a subject deep into their social and emotional brain and clear out the traumas that affect us all in some form or another. This book gave me some feels that I hadn’t felt before, and you’ll find out why during the course of our chat here. So let’s cast this pod off into the depths of our primal feel spot, where behind all those painful skeletons lies the uncoiled serpent they’ve been desperately trying to keep you away from. This week on "State of Wonder," we discuss the legacy of former mayor and arts booster Vera Katz, the best music of 2017, and get a glimpse into Portland's past through the photos of Minor White.Remembering Beloved Former Mayor, Vera Katz - 1:24This week, Former Portland Mayor and Oregon House speaker Vera Katz died. A trailblazer who steered Portland into an unprecedented period of growth and vitality (see: Pearl District, South Waterfront, East Bank Esplanade, etc), she always had her eye on how arts and creativity could enrich public life.We look back on Katz's legacy and then sit down with two arts leaders who worked during Katz tenure: Eloise Damrosch, the long-time head of the Regional Arts and Culture Council, and Linda K. Johnson, a dancer, choreographer, and teacher who brought many projects to life inside and outside the public sector, including an Artist-in-Residency program in the early days of the South Waterfront. The Year In Jazz With KMHD - 16:35We’re going to take some time to look back at the year that was in music. First up, we talk the ever-widening world of jazz with the mighty triumvirate behind KMHD Jazz Radio: program director Matt Fleeger and hosts/producers Isabel Zacharias and Derek Smith. They talk some of the best albums and best concerts of the year (hey, Solange!) that remind us why jazz continues to be so important — it uplifts, inspires, reflects and makes space for honesty.opbmusic's Favorite Music Of 2017 - 26:35It's been a big year for local pop, rock, and hip-hop artists. opbmusic's Jerad Walker joins us to talk the two biggest songs to come out of Portland maybe ever: Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still" and Amine's "Caroline" (don't miss Portugal's performance of their whole album live in the OPB studio). Then we move onto some of the year's other breakouts and best live opbmusic sessions, including The Last Artful, Dodgr, Kelli Schaefer, and Wild Ones.Bullseye Glass: The Heavy Metal Saga Continues - 34:46Bullseye Glass came under heavy state and county scrutiny last year after scientists found heavy metals in air and plants near the art glass maker’s southeast Portland headquarters. The company has since spent millions of dollars to comply and now has now sued the state for civil rights violations, claiming Governor Kate Brown’s actions were arbitrary and capricious, and violated the company’s right to due process.City Council Approves Portland Art Museum's Expansion - 37:49Last year, the Portland Art Museum announced plans for a new entrance called the Rothko Pavilion that would connect the museum’s two existing buildings and fix its notoriously inaccessible layout. However, advocates for disability, pedestrian and bicycle rights argued that the expansion would obstruct the current pedestrian passage along Madison Street. This week, the council voted 3-1 in favor of the museum.Minor White's Photographs Of The Portland Before Old Portland - 39:18We talk a lot about how much Portland has changed in the last few decades, but if you want to really blow your mind, look at the city compared not to the 1990s, but to the 1930s. Talk about a whole different town. The artist Minor White spent several years photographing Portland for the Works Progress Administration. Now there’re two exhibitions of his work: "In the Beginning: Minor White’s Oregon Photographs" at the Portland Art Museum and "Parting Shots: Minor White’s Images of Portland, 1938-1942" at the Architectural Heritage Center. Eric Slade dropped by to discuss Oregon Art Beat's recent profile of White.Explode Into Colors Are Back In The Music Game - 43:56The reunion of Explode Into Colors for two epic live shows last fall fall — and an opbmusic studio session — had Portland music fans in ecstasy. They liked playing together so much that they’re back for a two-night stand at Mississippi Studios Dec. 30 and 31.
