Today, we're opening the vaults to share a rare and remarkable recording from Esalen's rich historical archive: a 1967 lecture and live demonstration by none other than Dr. Ida Rolf, the pioneering founder of Structural Integration—more commonly known today as Rolfing. But what is Rolfing? Often described as intense (and sometimes even painful), Rolfing is a powerful form of bodywork that focuses on the manipulation and realignment of connective tissue—fascia—to promote structural balance and physical freedom. Ida Rolf believed that by methodically reorganizing the body's structure in gravity, not only could chronic pain and postural issues be resolved, but profound emotional and psychological healing could also occur. This archival gem features Dr. Rolf in her element—lecturing with intellectual precision, delivering her insights with wit and candor, and guiding a live demo with such vivid specificity that, even without visuals, you feel transported into the room beside her. It's a masterclass in both bodywork and presence. A little backstory: Ida Rolf first came to Esalen in the 1960s at the invitation of famed Gestalt therapist Fritz Perls, who would become one of her earliest champions. According to The Upstart Spring, Rolf worked on Perls daily for a week. On the seventh day, during a neck session, he passed out—briefly. When he came to, he recounted a deeply buried trauma: a therapist twisting his neck under anesthesia decades earlier. The memory, and its accompanying tension, had haunted him for years. He credited Rolf's work with helping to release it. After that, Perls became an ardent supporter of Rolfing, and Ida returned to Esalen again and again. Esalen Institute would become the West Coast hub for her method, just as it had for Gestalt therapy. This episode is a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Rolf in her own voice, offering not just a window into the origins of Rolfing, but a taste of the charisma, intellect, and force of will that helped her change the way we think about the body, healing, and human potential.

In this deeply personal and eye-opening episode, Majeed Mogharreban sits down with Hyatt Saikin, a master Rolfer and structural integration expert based in Ottawa, Canada. After battling debilitating sciatic pain and trying everything from massage therapy to chiropractic and acupuncture—with no relief—Majeed shares how just three sessions of Rolfing® with Hyatt got him standing straight and living nearly pain-free. Together, they explore the power of fascia, the importance of postural alignment, and how Rolfing® can help the body move with ease, grace, and freedom from pain. Hyatt brings his decades of experience and a compassionate approach to healing, helping people get out of pain and back into their lives. Key Takeaways ✅ What Is Rolfing®? – A hands-on therapy focused on reorganizing the connective tissue (fascia) to restore balance and ease in the body. ✅ Fascia: The Missing Link in Pain Relief – This network of tissue surrounds every muscle and organ, and when it's restricted, it can cause widespread pain and dysfunction. ✅ Why Your Pain Might Not Be “Muscular” or “Skeletal” – Discover how fascial adhesion could be the real culprit—and why traditional massage and chiropractic care often miss the mark. ✅ Release, Don't Force – Rolfing helps guide the body back into alignment through trained, precise, and often gentle touch that releases and rehydrates fascia. ✅ Gravity Is Your Friend—If You Know How to Stand – Hyatt explains how posture affects pain, mobility, and energy, and how to let gravity flow through you instead of work against you. In 2007, at 50 years old I was a mess.I needed seven surgeries, was in tons of pain, 90 pounds overweight, and a sky-high A1C of 14.7.Sick and miserable doesn't even begin to describe it.No surgeries, no meds, diabetes gone (A1C 5.8).My amazing wife and I own two fitness studios, helping others escape the "healthcare" treadmill. How'd we do it? Believe it or not, it was much simpler than you might think. We made a bold decision to ditch conventional wisdom—the kind that pushed me toward seven surgeries and a mountain of medications.Instead of accepting this grim future, we chose to take control of my (our) health. We shifted our focus to seek out natural ways to heal, rather than simply masking symptoms with medications, which often only cover up the problems without addressing the root causes. This journey started with research. We explored various alternative therapies and holistic approaches. We learned about nutrition, the body's ability to heal itself, and the importance of lifestyle choices in our health. We became advocates for our own well-being, asking questions, challenging the norms, and discovering what truly resonates with us. This was about more than just avoiding surgery; it was about reclaiming my life.Every step we took was intentional, guided by a desire for genuine healing and lasting change. Instead of living on medications that would only prolong the cycle of illness, we embraced natural therapies, exercise, and a focus on mental well-being.This journey taught us that true wellness involves a multifaceted approach, integrating body, mind, and spirit.By prioritizing our health and seeking out what works for us, we found a way to thrive—simple but incredibly powerful.Rolfing was the first true game-changer in my journey to recovery. After just two sessions, my foot pain disappeared as if by magic! It was such a relief to finally find a solution that truly worked, especially after enduring so many other treatments that left me feeling frustrated and hopeless. This breakthrough opened my eyes to the power of alternative therapies and set the stage for my commitment to natural healing. Then came a flat-out miracle called "resistance stretching."At first, the idea seemed counterintuitive—stretching muscles while they're contracted? It didn't make sense to me initially. But once I tried it, I realized it's pure magic! This approach worked wonders, fixing my back pain, sciatica, shoulder, and knee issues without the need for surgery. My flexibility increased, and my overall movement and strength improved dramatically, giving me newfound confidence in my body's capabilities.Diabetes? That terrifying 14.7 A1C was a wake-up call.I knew I needed a drastic change, so I decided to ditch the standard American Diabetes Association diet, which wasn't working for me… (it acutally is the exact oposite of what is needed to control diabetes without meds.)So I adopted a super low-carb lifestyle. This shift in eating habits was the key to controlling my diabetes without relying on medications. It was truly transformative.Within six months, my A1C plummeted to 5.8, and I no longer needed medication to keep my blood sugar in check. This dramatic improvement not only stabilized my health but also empowered me with the knowledge that I could manage my condition through dietary changes. It reinforced the belief that sometimes the most effective solutions are the simplest, and it set me on a path to lifelong wellness. With the big problems behind us, we turned our attention to maintaining our newfound health and vitality. We combined yoga and resistance stretching and added into our daily routine, emphasizing proper muscle engagement and moving through a full range of motion. These practices helped us keep our bodies flexible and strong, preventing future issues while enhancing overall well-being.Alongside these exercises, we prioritized good posture, breathwork, hydration, and quality sleep. Each of these elements, though simple, played a crucial role in supporting our physical and mental health.Maintaining proper posture helped prevent aches and pains, breathwork reduced stress and increased mindfulness, staying hydrated ensured our bodies functioned optimally, and getting enough restful sleep allowed us to recharge and face each day with energy. This combination of practices may seem straightforward, but together, they formed a powerful foundation for a thriving and healthy lifestyle. As it turns out, childhood stress and anxiety had been silently holding me back for years, affecting both my mental and physical health.Despite addressing many of my major health concerns, I realized this underlying stress was still impacting my well-being.To tackle these deep-rooted issues, I turned to counseling, meditation, and tapping.Counseling provided a safe space to explore and understand past experiences, uncovering patterns that had been influencing my life.Meditation helped me cultivate mindfulness and inner peace, allowing me to release tension and remain grounded in the present moment.Tapping, or Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), offered a practical way to address emotional blockages and reduce anxiety.Together, these practices led to yet another life-changing transformation on my path to wellness.By confronting and healing these long-standing stresses, I was able to find emotional freedom and resilience, profoundly enriching my journey to overall well-being.This holistic approach not only supported my mental health but also enhanced my physical health, fitting perfectly into my commitment to a balanced, healthy life. We're always exploring new methods and techniques, constantly seeking out what can improve our well-being.We test and try different approaches, evaluating their effectiveness along the way.If something doesn't resonate or provide the benefits we hoped for, we toss it aside without hesitation. But when we discover something that truly enhances our lives—whether it's a new exercise, a fresh dietary tweak, or a mindfulness practice—we incorporate it into our daily routine. This process of discovery keeps our health journey exciting and dynamic, ensuring we're always adapting and evolving for the better.Probably the most important key to a fulfilling life is discovering your purpose. It's what gives your days meaning and drives you to get out of bed each morning. For us, finding our mission ignited a passion that fueled everything we do. It truly made all the difference, turning a once-challenging journey into an inspiring adventure. In 2012, we turned this passion into action by opening RiversZen Fitness Studios. Our goal was simple: to share the invaluable lessons and life-changing insights we gained on our path to health and wellness. At RiversZen, we're dedicated to helping people transform their lives, just as we did with ours. We guide them in discovering their own unique path to health, offering support and encouragement every step of the way.Seeing others succeed and thrive is incredibly rewarding, and it continuously reaffirms the importance of living with purpose. How about you? Today's conversation is with Don St John. Dr. Don St John is a psychotherapist, Continuum Fluid Movement teacher, author of the award winning Healing the Wounds of Childhood, and the revised Healing the Wounds of Childhood and Culture. He has been immersed in the psychological, somatic, relational, and spiritual worlds for more than fifty years. Dr. St John has a unique perspective on healing and human potential, having constructed a view that includes four essential and interrelated components: the Somatic (Body), the Psycho-Emotional, the Relational, and the Spiritual. Don and I had a lovely discussion where we shared our backgrounds, interests, and personal journeys. We spoke about an underutilization of resources that could benefit people, such as clinical treatments and philosophical and psychological concepts, how Hellerwork began, Continnum, Hannah Somatics, the importance of Dr Rolf's work, and a little discussion about the usage of the trademark of Rolfing. Have you heard of Somatic Movement and wondered “what exactly is that?” In this episode of the podcast, I'm sharing a brief excerpt from my work-in-progress book, where I give an overview of the field of Somatics and describe how I use these movement practices. The working title of my book is Teaching Mindful Movement, and you'll be hearing a brief section I've written about Somatics. This is part of a longer chapter that covers a few different movement modalities I like to include in my practice and teaching. Somatic Movement seems to be kind of a buzzword lately, and I've had a few people reach out to ask what “somatic” actually means. While some may just be using the term for marketing purposes, Somatics actually refers to a whole field of body-based practices that emphasize the awareness of internal sensations. This broad term can refer to styles of movement (like Feldenkrais and Hanna Somatics), somatic psychotherapies, somatic approaches to dance, and hand-on bodywork methods (like Rolfing and Craniosacral Therapy) that grew out of the Somatics movement. In this excerpt I will offer a succinct background on the field of Somatics, where and when it originated, and who the major figures are. You'll hear a few tidbits about how the Somatics field was developing amidst the mid-twentieth century's cultural shifts, including the introduction of Eastern practices like Yoga and Buddhism to the West. I also note that there is an effort nowadays to decolonize Somatic practices and investigate where Euro-Centric biases may have been imbedded in their development. After this history and background, I also share how I use Somatics as part of my Mindful Movement teaching and practice: To increase embodiment and awareness of subtle sensations Refine “building-block” movements, leading to greater ease in complex movement patterns Release deeply-held tension and down-regulate the nervous system Gently engage the body when there's pain, through these gradual and non-threatening movements I hope you will enjoy this preview of my book, Teaching Mindful Movement! If you have feedback to share after hearing this section of the book, please contact me. I would love to know what you find intriguing or confusing, or if you think of something related to Somatics that I should consider including in this section. And, if you'd like to be notified when my book Teaching Mindful Movement is ready, sign up for updates here! --------- For more links and resources mentioned in this episode, find the show notes at movedtomeditate.yoga/podcast. Justin Salamon and I explore the intersections between the therapeutic power of working in the outdoor industry and supporting clients in our healing modalities. We explore river running, nature, regulation, intuition, sharing power and why we don't give our clients “psychic downloads”. Listen in a find out more about how we can become a safer space for those we support. About Justin Justin Salamon, MA - Certified Rolfer: "My first experience with Rolfing® SI was in 2000 when I was seeking help for chronic shoulder dislocations. I was an avid climber, backpacker and paddler working in the outdoor industry but injuries threatened my ability to continue my livelihood. My first ten series was transformative – walking was joyful in a way I had never experienced, breathing was effortless, my coordination improved and old pains disappeared. I realized that I needed to study Rolfing SI to understand the changes that had occurred in my body and to share the work with others. Since 2002 I have been privileged to practice Rolfing Structural Integration, and in the process help clients of all ages and backgrounds. I approach each session as an opportunity to understand the physical and psycho-biological patterns that make each client unique, and enjoy the challenge of helping each person become pain-free, embodied, and more comfortable in his/her everyday life. Rolfing fuels my passion for deepening my knowledge of the human body and the human experience through formal education and independent study. When I am not Rolfing you can find me helping with the management of Canyon Explorations where we offer 13-18 day human powered river trips through Grand Canyon. I still get on the river as a Guide and Trip Leader but have more time to devote to Rolfing and management. My free time is spent exploring the mountains, rivers and canyons. Most importantly my time is spent learning, adventuring and growing with my children." Website Soulful Retreat:

Today's conversation is with Don Hanlon Johnson Don is no stranger to the embodied and somatic work, he's been involved in this field since long before many of us have been born. Now in his 90's he has been involved with so many of the pioneers and lineage holders of this field. A blurp written by Don about himself reads, “As I move into my twilight years, I am aware that the seeds that brought forth my current work were planted over half a century ago when I had my first post in teaching philosophy at what is now Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles while participating with Carl Rogers in his research project on the efficacy of student-centered learning in the school system of the Immaculate Heart sisters from kindergarten through their university. That intersection of Rogerian humanistic psychology with the experiential tradition of Socratic and Husserlian philosophy, my long history of meditation, and my first visits to the newly born Esalen Institute, gradually shaped a comprehensive approach to the education of therapists and healers, bringing together the cutting-edge theoretical, with relevant experiential dimensions, and the intellectual aspects of developing an embodied consciousness. After studying and practicing the work of Ida Rolf, I founded the first masters degree program in Somatic Psychology and succeeded in having it authorized by license-granting state boards. I was a professor in that program for some 30 years. I am now teaching in newly launched Somatics emphasis in the doctoral program of Integral and Transpersonal Psychologies. My website has more detailed information." This was really a dream come true for me. Don was one of the people I had in mind to talk with when I created this podcast. Further proof that with hard work and diligence, dreams can come true. And they can be even more rewarding than imagined. Todays talk ran the gamut of Rolfing history, phenomenology and other topics of which Don is an experienced and knowledgeable sage of. Instead of my usual forewords, let's just hop into this exciting and informative talk. Ever wondered how understanding your body can unlock your health potential? In an enlightening conversation with martial artist and former classmate Tom Richards, we explore the fascinating world of fascia, the connective tissue in our bodies. Tom shares his personal experience with Rolfing, manual therapy, his holistic approach to bodywork, and how this technique allowed him to overcome a hip injury. We delve into the role of fascia in maintaining our health, discussing myofascia and its contribution to the fascia continuum. Tom enlightens us about the strain patterns that can distort our fascia, likening it to a wetsuit that doesn't quite fit.The journey continues as we venture into the realm of proprioception and the profound role of breath in our wellbeing. Tom draws on centuries-old Eastern wisdom on breath and its validation through modern science. We assess the transformative potential of breath as a point of leverage in changing our state of being. From there, we examine how an overdeveloped neck can limit your breath and how understanding back breathing can help mitigate tension in the upper back. Our discussion also addresses how to appropriately confront shoulder impingement and maintain pelvic mobility. We conclude our enlightening conversation by revisiting the concept of Rolfing, while also considering other holistic approaches to health and fitness. Tom elucidates how these techniques can address chronic injuries and advance overall health and wellbeing. At the end of the episode, Barton discusses how with his coaching program, he emphasizes the value of integrating blood work, VO2 max testing, and DEXA scans for a comprehensive approach to anti-aging and strength enhancement. Tall swooning bamboo, the smoke of clove cigarettes, and classical piano. If you've taken a walk on the near westside of Bloomington in the last many decades, you may have had this sensory experience as you knowingly or unknowingly passed the home of our guest, Simeon Rodgers. Having made his way from a farm in the middle of Indiana to the prestigious Indiana University Music in the 1960s, Simeon established a home here and earned a degree. He also made donuts to keep a roof over his daughters' heads and started a career in rolfing, an intense form of bodywork that involves manipulating deep tissue. Along the way, your hosts talk about fear of highways, Spanish beaches, Nine Inch Nails, spiritual godfathers, weeding gardens, eating pies at Spring Mill State Park, conflicts on rooftops, and, most importantly, being lil bitches. In this episode, Chris incorrectly guessed that David Letterman interviewed Kenny Aranoff about rolfing, and Josh called Scott his uncle. He's actually his cousin, so fuck you! Chris wrote this song for Simeon back in the day. Some of the references should be familiar, bitch. BIG NEWS: WE HAVE MERCH! Designed by Chris Mott and sponsored by badknees. Check it out!
