I almost didn't record this episode. I've been sitting with these thoughts for weeks, wrestling with whether to speak, when to speak, and how to speak about the cultural moment we're in.I've been thinking a lot about September 11th lately, about who we were in those days and how we were. Republicans and Democrats wept together. Strangers helped strangers. We saw each other as Americans first, humans first. For all the horror of that day, there was something unexpectedly beautiful about how it stripped away our superficial divisions and revealed our shared humanity. What a stark contrast to where we find ourselves now.In this episode, I'm wading into some deep waters about the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the response from our culture, and the heartbreaking disunity I've witnessed even among believers. I share why I've drastically limited my social media intake and why I believe we were never intended to bear the weight of the world on our shoulders. I talk about the sacred rhythm of listening first, pondering deeply, and responding with compassion and intention.I also get vulnerable about my own convictions... why I'm choosing to be a hope-bringer rather than adding fuel to the flames, and what it means practically to guard our gates, embrace the power of the pause, and look for the image of God even in those who make our blood boil.Everything is on fire, but we don't have to add fuel to the flames. We can choose to carry water instead of matches. This one's personal, friends. And I'm grateful you're here for the journey.Chapters00:00 | Introduction: A Call to Reflect03:34 | The Weight of Words: Navigating Anger and Grief06:45 | The Impact of Digital Overload on Compassion09:38 | The Importance of Silence and Listening12:41 | Shared Humanity in Times of Crisis15:10 | Rejecting Dehumanization: Embracing the Imago Dei18:06 | Practical Steps to Foster Hope22:21 | Navigating Cultural Moments with Wisdom25:14 | Personal Reflections on Recent Events29:16 | Choosing Hope in a Divided WorldShannon's Website: shannonsuzannescott.comShannon's Instagram: instagram.com/shannonsscott
Hopelessness can feel like a storm that never ends. But hope is not denial—it's choosing to trust God's promises even when life feels impossible. In this episode, Jeanith unpacks what it means to choose hope when everything around you screams despair. You'll discover how hope shifts your perspective, renews your strength, and points others to Jesus. In this episode, you'll learn: The lies that steal our hope (and the truths that replace them) Why hope is an anchor rooted in God's Word (Romans 15:13, Jeremiah 29:11, Isaiah 40:31) Practical ways to choose hope daily—even when it's hard Resources:
On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty sits down with Adrienne Caldwell, author of Unbroken: Life Outside the Lines, for a direct conversation about growing up with parental schizophrenia, the realities of trauma, and what resilience actually looks like day-to-day. Without sensationalizing, Adrienne unpacks the stereotypes around schizophrenia, the impact of untreated mental illness on families, and the small steps that move a person from surviving to rebuilding. This episode offers grounded perspective, language that reduces stigma, and practical encouragement for anyone navigating trauma or supporting a loved one—tailored for audiences on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and search. About the Guest : Adrienne Caldwell is the author of Unbroken: Life Outside the Lines. Drawing from lived experience with family members who had schizophrenia and her own journey through adversity, Adrienne speaks candidly about safety, recovery, and the discipline of hope. Key Takeaways: Schizophrenia is widely stereotyped; lived experience shows it as complex and varied, not inherently “dangerous.” Caregiver/child safety planning matters: identify safe adults, spaces, and routines—especially when symptoms like paranoia or isolation appear. Stigma drops when we separate a person's identity from a diagnosis and use precise, respectful language. Recovery is incremental: “one step” at a time creates distance from crisis and opens room for support and treatment. Community protection helps: teachers, relatives, social workers, and neighbors can serve as protective factors when home isn't stable. Trauma has long tails (e.g., anxiety, early depression, attachment challenges); naming it without shame is the start of healing. Boundaries are health tools: limiting volatile contact and seeking professional help can reduce harm. Hope is practical: small daily commitments (sleep, food, movement, therapy adherence, peer support) compound into stability. For loved ones: validate, don't minimize; encourage evaluation and evidence-based care; avoid labels that dehumanize. Content sensitivity: this episode references suicide in a non-instructional, recovery-oriented way; include crisis resources in show descriptions. In this episode, we talk with Deb Brandt, caregiver to her husband, JR, a survivor of Philadelphia-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Deb shares the journey that began in September 2016 when JR noticed unusual symptoms that led to an urgent diagnosis. Within days, he began an aggressive chemotherapy regimen, with the hope of a bone marrow transplant as the only cure. The search for a match took seven months, eventually expanding internationally until a 10/10 donor was found, leading them to relocate to Stanford University for the procedure. We discuss the practical realities of caregiving, especially the financial side. Deb emphasizes connecting early with medical teams, social workers, nurse navigators, and financial departments. She details how they tapped into resources from organizations like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, utilized a GoFundMe campaign, applied for Social Security disability benefits through its "blue book" criteria, and discovered that many medical bills are negotiable. Deb highlights pharmaceutical assistance programs, including the Medicine Assistance Tool (MAT), NeedyMeds, and Triage Cancer, which help patients access affordable medication.Deb also shares the importance of proactive communication with insurance providers, especially when facing financial hardship, and leveraging housing support networks such as Ronald McDonald House and Hope Lodge when treatment requires relocation. Don't be afraid to use your personal network, too!On the emotional side, Deb describes how caregiving is deeply personal, with strategies unique to each person. She and JR found joy in music, storytelling, birdwatching, and creating comforting hospital environments. She underscores the need for caregivers to take their own breaks — whether walks, massages, or naps — and the value of long-term follow-up care, especially when complications like chronic graft-versus-host disease arise. We explore life after transplant, the strengthening of family bonds, and Deb's practical lesson of “learning the job” by taking over JR's household roles. Professionally, Deb works in Montana's vocational rehabilitation department, helping people with disabilities — including those recovering from cancer — re-enter or adapt to the workforce. She shares that similar resources are available in every U.S. state.Deb's closing message is about consciously choosing hope. She encourages caregivers and patients to find daily glimmers of light, allow space for tears, but always return to gratitude and positivity. Twenty-first-century life is permeated with cynicism. Whether it is the outlook on politics, economics, humor, or even religion, a cynical attitude often prevails, which could be summed up in this way: the only thing you can trust about people is that you cannot trust people. This, however, is not the attitude God desires in His people because such a spirit defeats the hope with which He wants us to live. This sermon will explore the dangers posed to the cynic and provide biblical suggestions for opting instead for a spirit of hope. A sermon given by Greg Chandler on April 20, 2025.
Welcome to this classic episode. Classics are my favorite episodes from the past 10 years, published once a month. These are N of 1 conversations with N of 1 people. There aren't many people like Cyan Banister. Her life story is remarkable. She was homeless at a young age, dropped out of high school, and five years ago she suffered an extremely rare stroke. Yet, in spite of everything, she is one of the most optimistic and curious people you can hope to meet. Cyan is also one of the great angel investors of this era, having invested early in SpaceX, Uber, Postmates, and Deepmind to name a few winners. She became the first female investing partner at Peter Thiel's Founders Fund and now invests at Long Journey Ventures. Our conversation is as much about investing as it is about the essence of life and how connecting with that will help us in our professional pursuits. It is also full of awesome stories about people and companies like SpaceX and Bill Murray. Please enjoy this great conversation with Cyan Banister. What do we say to someone who is walking through the unimaginable—the loss of a child, a devastating diagnosis, the fallout from a natural disaster? What happens when that tragedy enters our own lives? On today's episode of Fearless I had the honor of sitting down with Dr. Lee Warren—neurosurgeon, author, and Iraq war veteran—to talk about how to choose hope and find joy again, even in the face of unimaginable loss. Dr. Lee knows pain intimately. After battling through severe PTSD from his time serving as a surgeon in Iraq, he lost his son in a tragic act of violence. How did Dr. Lee and his family choose to move forward in faith despite every reason to give into doubt and turn away from God? Dr. Lee and I talk about the process of choosing hope, the science behind two things being true at the same time, and when (and if) joy can come back into our lives after we go through trauma. Despite everything he's walked through, Dr. Lee has found purpose in suffering, and we can too. My hope is that this conversation will serve as a reminder of God's unwavering presence in the midst of sorrow and evidence that healing is possible—even after the most profound losses.Purchase Dr. Lee's book, Hope Is The First Dose, wherever books are sold! This week's Shabbat message comes from Cantor Lisa Peicott—not just as a clergy member, but as a mother. As we collectively mourn the devastating loss of Kfir and Ariel, the heartbreaking fate of the Bibas family, Cantor Peicott offers a promise—to Kfir and Ariel, to her own children, and to us all. "I promise to hope." "Hope is not easy, hope is not pretty, hope is not a zero sum game, but it's who I believe we are. It is what has sustained us through plague, pogrom, and endless persecution. In the darkest of times, when the anger and the rage threatens to become all consuming, we choose hope. We have to believe that things can be better than our current reality." Each week, a member of the clergy offers their personal perspective on a topic of their choice, such as the week's Torah portion, a Jewish holiday, ritual, custom, or history. William R Miller, PhD, is one of the pioneers of motivational interviewing, a psychological technique that helps individuals overcome apathy and create change in their lives. Dr. Miller's research has become the standard practice in psychology, especially when clinicians are treating patients with addictive behaviors and patients who are recovering from depression that need help reigniting their personal motivation. His latest book, “8 Ways to Hope: Charting a Path through Uncertain Times,” which releases August 2024, takes lessons from Dr. Miller's research and applies them to the bridge between psychology and hope. This episode of Menninger Clinic's Mind Dive podcast features Dr. Miller, accomplished psychologist and author, joining us for a conversation about hope and his findings on the psychological effects of optimism versus pessimism. Dr. Miller also shares a sneak peek into his latest work which explores the varying types of hope and how to foster self-efficacy during difficult times. Dr. Miller was a clinical psychologist at the University of New Mexico for 30 years where he retired as emeritus distinguished professor psychology and psychiatry. Dr. Miller has continued to publish in his retirement and has seven books in his bibliography, including this latest one. All of Dr. Miller's titles can be found on his website.“Hope is something that we can do when we're uncertain,” says Dr. Clark. “It's the opposite of fear... fear is imagining a dreadful future and hope is imagining a better future. You can actually experience these emotions simultaneously and that's when hope becomes a choice.” Follow The Menninger Clinic on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to stay up to date on new Mind Dive episodes. When Sound of Freedom first came out, I was hesitant to see it. As a father, there are few things more difficult to watch and contemplate than the horrific abuse and unconscionable evil portrayed in the film. But the movie's message is important, and it conveys that message in a way that calls us to choose hope over fear. So, given that message, why has the film generated so much controversy? And what does it say about our culture that many have judged the movie without seeing it? On March 29th, 2022, Lexi decided to push past her struggles and embark on a new life of hope, healing, and recovery. On the same day, she also dedicated her entire life to Christ. After throwing herself back into rehab with her daughter, she has fought blood, sweat, and tears to get sober and live a life worth living. In her words, "I quit lying, cheating, and stealing, as well as drinking and using." It wasn't always easy for Lexi to face years of abuse and addiction. But when asked about her biggest motivation for recovery? The ability to raise her daughter in a safe environment away from drugs, alcohol, and abuse. Lexi shares that previously, she didn't have anything worth fighting for when trying to get clean in the past. But when threatened with the possibility of losing her daughter, Lexi fought with everything in her not to give up. Now, she celebrates her long list of achievements of holding a full-time job, beating her CPS case, paying her bills, owning her car, attending AA six days a week, meeting with her sponsor and therapist, and having a routine she is proud of and has even healed her relationship with her mother. Lexi is a fighter, overcomer, and achiever who can look in the mirror and finally love who she sees. Now, her goal is to help the next person find the healing she has found and show that no matter how hard life is, no matter how challenging 12 years of struggling with a meth addiction, enduring abuse of every kind, and fighting suicidal depression, it is possible to turn your life around. With her faith in God, support from her mother, and her incredible sponsor helping guide her, Lexi will stop at nothing to pave the way for her daughter.
