NAVAL WEEK kicks off with what might be The LAST Great Cold War Thriller?? Could be as this adaptation of Tom Clancy's best-selling novel was released literally just a few months after the fall of the Soviet Union.  It all takes place during the height of the Cold War back in the early 1980's.  There's a brand new Russian submarine in the water which can be apparently run silent and it's lead by Captain Ramius played by Sean Connery....who COULD pass for Russian right? :o Regardless, rumors start to fly among both the Russian and American Navies that he might have gone rogue....resulting a cat-and-mouse out there on the Atlantic Ocean between both naval fleets to find his ship (called The Red October) so that they can find out the truth before it's too late!  And inadvertently leading this chase is Jack Ryan, CIA analysis played by Alec Baldwin - he has suspicions that Ramius might NOT be going rogue and what results is a pulse-pounding suspense thriller directed by action-master John McTiernan as his follow-up to Die Hard two years prior.  The all-star cast also includes James Earl Jones, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, Courtney B. Vance, and Stellan Skaarsgard among several others.....THE HUNT IS ON!!!See below for a link to a video citing the actual translated lyrics to the catchy "Hymm to Red October" theme....just in case you were always curious. :)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRG1UixHvosHost & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

I will live in Montana. And I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck... maybe even a "recreational vehicle." And drive from state to state. Do they let you do that? We are joined by regular Game Night contributor Jeffrey Sax to discuss the movie The Hunt for Red October. What happens when you know so much about submarines that you unknowingly figure out information about them that is classified? That's the exact scenario that Tom Clancy found himself in when he released the original novel that this movie is based on. We speculate what would happen if he hypothetically accidentally leaked classified information as a result of writing this story. Plus, an actor in this movie has had quite the career including being elected as a real life senator and then later starring in Law and Order and does Ramius have a reason for defecting from the Soviet Union, and is it a sound one?Jeffrey's Links:InstagramTwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are on the trail of a potential underwater madman. We’re trying to avoid nuclear catastrophe in a tense race against time with the 1990 film from John McTiernan, The Hunt for Red October. What a way to kick off the ‘90s, right? This is a suspenseful film about a Soviet Union submarine captain trying to defect because his country was responsible for the death of his wife. This is no easy task to accomplish, especially in 1984, when this story is set. International relations between the U.S. and the Soviets was strained, to say the least. We’ve got a defecting captain and a two warring sides who don’t really know what the hell is going on with this man’s sub. Is he going to attack the U.S.? Is he trying to screw over the Soviets by giving up all their closely held secrets? Either way, Marko Ramius, played by peak-awesomeness Sean Connery, is in a tough position. This guy just wants to make it to safety alive, and he does it with such a calm, debonair attitude. “Oh, these subs are firing torpedoes at my sub? Ain’t no thang, we’ll just juke out these explosive life-enders and keep going on our merry way.” If I could learn how to keep as calm as he does under intense pressure, I’d probably be able to do anything. This is the first Jack Ryan movie, and it’s amazing. It set the standard for films starring relatively unassuming office workers who find themselves trying to save the world. A young Alec Baldwin stars as Ryan, a stable counterpart to Ramius. The confidence these two men possess is needed in a film that’s chock-full of other people who are just freaking the hell out all the time. It all makes for a compelling and exciting film that holds up and will continue to be an excellent film. The technology we see here is certainly obsolete, but a superb film doesn’t stop being great just because we have iPhones now. This one is top-notch and you’d do yourself a favor to see it. Jeffrey Solomon is the President of publicly listed Cowen Group (TK: COWN), a financial services company focused on supporting and providing active management to the marketplace. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1988, Jeff deferred an acting career with a brief respite on Wall Street, but he hasn’t looked back since. In 1994, he joined Peter Cohen, then the former head of investment bank Shearson Lehman Brothers, to form money management firm Ramius Advisors. Ramius grew to become one of the largest hedge funds in the world, and in 2009 merged with boutique investment bank Cowen Group. Following the merger, Jeff switched over to the investment bank side of the business and today serves as its Chief Executive Officer, where he embodies the firm’s core values of vision, tenacity and empathy. Our conversation starts with a passionate description of Pittsburgh sports, and flows to how active managers succeed in the 1990s and need to evolve to succeed today. We discuss the importance of empathy in the investment business, and touch on how Jeff’s summer camp experience as a kid informs how he manages people today. His answers to my closing questions are just amazing. If you’re short on time, fast forward to the 51stminute of the show. You’ll miss plenty along the way, but you don’t want to miss these. Join Faldor of The Extended Edition podcast and me for a look at the Tom Clancy bromance that is Hunt for Red October. We praise the pace despite the fact that it's mostly people talking to each other. We discuss the way the opening hides Ramius' intentions. And we wonder whether or not the silent drive helps Ramius.
