This episode presents an astonishing and tragic story from the American Civil War with great relevance to the present day. It's the story of a black boy called David Henry White who comes from Delaware and has done all in his power to create a life for himself – he has signed onto a merchant ship for work with the prospects of pay and promotion. Life has different plans for him however. When war breaks out he finds himself crossing paths with the USS Alabama, a confederate commerce raider of immense power blazing a path of success. White's ship is taken and he also is taken and forced to work on the confederate warship, captained by Raphael Semmes.White works on board until his fate is sealed in battle and the Alabama sunk. Semmes survives but White does not. He drowns. After the war Semmes writes his memoirs which paint the world in which White lived and died a very different way to how it appeared in reality. It's a story of the life and tragic death of a disempowered black boy, of an entitled racist naval officer, and of the profound and lasting power of written propaganda. After listening to this podcast you will burn with the light of the true historian, and never believe anything you read again without checking who wrote it, and more importantly WHY.To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with Andrew Sillen, author of the new book that unpicks this remarkable tale in the finest detail: Kidnapped at Sea. On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger — the last episode of the year! — we watched Tony Scott's 1995 submarine action thriller, “Crimson Tide,” starring Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, Viggo Mortenson and James Gandolfini, among many others. And to discuss “Crimson Tide,” we have an esteemed guest! Tony Gilroy, who you may know from his work on the Bourne films, political thrillers like “State of Play,” “Beirut,” legal thrillers like “Michael Clayton” or the recent Star Wars Disney Plus series “Andor.” Now, if you haven't watched “Crimson Tide” — and you should, stop this episode and go put it on — here's the score. In “Crimson Tide,” the crew of the USS Alabama, a nuclear submarine, is put on high alert as civil war breaks out in post-Soviet Russia. Military units loyal to the ultra-nationalist rebel have taken control of a nuclear missile installation and have threatened nuclear war if threatened. The USS Alabama is commanded by Captain Frank Ramsey, a career veteran of the submarine corps. He has chosen the cerebral and inexperienced Lieutenant Commander Ron Hunter to serve as his new executive officer. The two clash, eventually coming to an impasse over an Emergency Action Message order a missile launch against the Russian base. Ramsey wants to move forward while Hunter wants to delay action until the USS Alabama can clarify a second message received but interrupted as the crew confronted an enemy submarine. What follows is a confrontation, a mutiny, and a race to confirm the Alabama's true orders lest they fire the shot that starts a nuclear conflagration. The tagline for “Crimson Tide” was “Danger Runs Deep.”You can find “Crimson Tide” for rent or purchase on iTunes and Amazon. Our next episode will be on “Executive Decision,” directed by Stuart Baird and starring Kurt Russell, Halle Berry and John Leguizamo. It's time for a deep dive – literally – as we plunge into the abyss on this aquatic edition of Bad Dads Film Review.First up, let's submerge ourselves in the world of submarines! Over the years, there have been so many iconic submarines that have graced the big screen, haven't there? Remember The Nautilus from "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"? A true marvel of underwater engineering! Then, of course, there's The Red October from "The Hunt for Red October" – Sean Connery's Russian accent and a game of underwater cat-and-mouse? Classic! And how can we forget U-96 from "Das Boot", giving us an unflinching look at life aboard a German U-boat during WWII. We also have The USS Alabama from "Crimson Tide", where Denzel and Gene Hackman go head-to-head in a battle of wills. And, to round off our list, there's the USS Dallas from "The Hunt for Red October" – a fine piece of American craftsmanship involved in the hunt for its Russian counterpart. With our heads still submerged, our Movie of the Week is "Submarine". Richard Ayoade's directorial debut, this coming-of-age film is dry, witty, and beautifully shot. It's not about submarines in the way you might think, but it's a deep dive into the complexities of adolescence, family dynamics, and the ever-challenging journey of growing up.Then, for a trip down nostalgia lane, let's journey into the depths with "Stingray". It's a blast from the past for some of us! This marionette-filled adventure was a staple of kids' TV back in the day. "Anything can happen in the next half hour" was the promise, and boy, did it deliver! Aquatic adventures, villains, and of course, Marina, the mute mermaid. It might be a little cheesy by today's standards, but it's got a charm that's undeniable. So whether you're all about the deep-sea adventures, navigating the tumultuous waters of teenage life, or just in the mood for some retro TV memories, we've got you covered. Make sure your periscope's up, and let's set sail on another episode of Bad Dads Film Review!
The USS Alabama, a World War II Battleship, has been visited by millions of people since it was first brought to its permanent home at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile Bay. What a lot ofpeople don't know is how several young children helped move the 45,000 ton ship. The Mighty A, as she was nicknamed, served for three years during World War II as the floating home of 2,500 valiant crew members. She eventually received nine Battle Stars for her meritorious service. After the war, she was eventually decommissioned and was sitting at a Naval station in Seattle, Washington, where she was going to be scrapped and forgotten. Several patriotic citizens from Mobile, Alabama, decided that something needed to be done to preserve the Mighty A and tohonor her history. They created a fundraiser and began the efforts to relocate her.As the money was being raised, someone had the brilliant idea to get Alabama schoolchildren involved. I think I was in second grade when our teacher informed us we could help make a difference by raising funds ourselves. When the time came to donate our money, I brought whatI had collected from picking up coke bottles and cashing them in.Children all across Alabama opened up their piggy banks and their hearts. When the money was tallied, it was just shy of 100,000 dollars. Astounding! You're never too young to make a difference, so encourage the young people in your life to join forces with a worthy cause. They might just move a mountain…or a ship!

Hello and welcome to the 79th episode of Film Freakz, the podcast about movies! Each episode is all about a single movie! In this episode we discussed the movie Crimson Tide from 1995. This podcast features YemmytheFerret (Yemmy), justkalas (Kalas), Taymation Studios (Tay), and GreedyWaffle (Nick). This movie was chosen by Kalas who doesn't watch College Football but roots for Alabama. After the Cold War, a breakaway Russian republic with nuclear warheads becomes a possible worldwide threat. The USS Alabama, BB-60 was a South Dakota class battleship that served in the North Atlantic and Pacific during World War II. At the war's end, she was mothballed and stored in the Pacific Reserve Fleet in Puget Sound outside Bremerton, Washington. Twenty years later, the Navy announced in 1962 that the South Dakota class of battleships would be sold for scrap. Hey y'all and welcome to Southern Macabre! I'm Aeryn and I am so glad y'all are listening today. Before I tell you today's paranormal story, I have a couple of announcements to make. First, Southern Macabre is officially a month old! It happened Monday, but I didn't realize it until, well, let me make the second announcement. So, we are the #74 Independent True Crime Podcast out of 100 on Goodpods – that is because of YOU! So, thank YOU for listening and telling your friends about this podcast. I never would have thought anything like this would happen, especially not this quickly. Y'all are awesome and I love y'all! The problem with this accomplishment is I wanted something unique for this episode. Something unexpected. It took a lot of time, but I think it was worth it. Today I'm going to bring y'all down to my neck of the woods, kind of. Same state, just a lot further south. ----- Our story takes place in Mobile, Alabama, a fascinating city filled with rich history and beloved southern traditions. Did y'all know you can hop on a boat to watch the Moon Pie drop at the Moon Pie Factory on New Years Eve? Or that the very first Mardi Gras parade happened here and not in New Orleans? It's true. Or that Carnival Cruise Line and Naval Ships are built here? You can see some of their daily operations from that boat tour I mentioned before. Speaking of ships, today's story is about the 680-foot battleship, the USS Alabama BB-60 that rests in Mobile, Alabama. My family and I visited the battleship back in 2015, so I will post some of our pictures on the website and our Facebook page. Unfortunately, none of us experienced anything paranormal, but none of us were brave enough to go down the steep, narrow stairs. My oldest is clumsy, I was wearing my daughter in a baby carrier on my chest, and my husband…well, he has his reasons. Here's a hint: Swannanoa. If you aren't familiar with that episode, please listen to The Blue Dog Ghost after I get done telling you today's story. We southerners don't like being interrupted when we're telling a story. The ship is awesome, and so is the military museum next door, so you should definitely visit if you ever get the chance. Unless you are physically looking at her, you can't understand how enormous this ship really is! As we were driving up to her, we were impressed, but once we parked and started walking towards her we were awestruck! So, the USS Alabama was ordered in 1939 and was built at the Norfolk Naval Yard in Norfolk, Virginia. She was the fourth and last member of the South Dakota class of battleships built for the United States. She was launched on February 16, 1942 and sent to strengthen the British Home Fleet during World War II. Her primary use was to protect air craft carriers from surface and air attacks. After the war, she brought about 700 people home from the war zone. She was decommissioned in 1947 having never seen a casualty caused by enemy fire. That's impressive! So, then, how is she haunted? We'll get to that in a moment, I want to tell you more about her and her history first. Just be patient. When she was decommissioned, she was assigned to the Pacific Reserve Fleet until 1962 when she was set to be destroyed. A campaign to save her was launched and enough funds were raised that she was brought to Mobile to act as a museum. The USS Alabama had guns upon guns on board and a technologically superior radar system. She was designed well to do her job, protect our men so they could kill the bad guys. Anyway, on to the reason y'all are here. So, while she was being built, two men died and some people claim to hear them still working on her to this day. Also, I said no one was killed by enemy fire. I didn't say anything about friendly fire. The guns onboard were supposed to have safety features that would prevent turrets firing on each other, but they failed and eight men died. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1995 American submarine film "Crimson Tide" directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. The premise of the film concerns the clash of wills between the new executive officer and the commanding officer of a U.S. nuclear missile submarine at a time of political turmoil in the Russian Federation in which ultranationalists are threatening to launch nuclear missles at the United States and Japan. Gene Hackman plays Captain Frank Ramsey, the seasoned commanding officer of the U.S. Navy Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine, USS Alabama, which has been assigned to a patrol mission and ordered to be ready to launch its missiles in a pre-emptive strike if intelligence that the ultranationalists threatening to attack the U.S. and Japan report that the Russian dissidents appear to be fueling their missiles for a immediate attack. However, Captain Ramsey and his new executive officer, Commander Ron Hunter (played by Daniel Washington), have a difference of opinion in their interpretation of their orders, which leads to the crew of the Alabama to be divided in their allegiance to whom and to which conflicting orders they should follow. The film has a great cast of actors, such as: James Gandolfini, Viggo Mortensen, Matt Craven, George Dzundza, Rocky Carroll, as well as other great actors in some wonderfully memorable roles. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

The USS Alabama is an ideal museum to visit. The 80-year-old ship has interactive exhibits, stunning open views of the water and of course is a giant World War II battleship that can be explored. It is located on the Mobile Bay about a two-hour drive west of the Fort Walton Beach area. It can be seen as you drive on Interstate 10 toward Mobile.Visitors are greeted by static aircraft displays at the entrance to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. The ship is hard to miss and is securely moored so visitors should not worry about floating away on their tour. A gift shop to purchase souvenirs and tickets is adjacent to the vessel. Some lucky guests can stay overnight, sleeping on the actual bunks used by World War II sailors. The Overnight Adventure is open to Boy Scout troops, Girl Scout troops and church groups. The history of the battleship is as remarkable as its presence on the bay. Two corrections. First, I say that one reason why John Adams went to Europe during the Revolutionary War was to keep countries from supporting Europe. I mean “England,” of course. Second, when talking about Charles Francis Adams I mention the ship, the USS Alabama. It was the CSS Alabama (Confederate States Ship). Books mentioned in this episode: America’s First Dynasty: The Adamses, 1735-1918 (Richard Brookhiser) John Adams (David McCullough) The Education of Henry Adams (Henry Adams) Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres (Henry Adams) Democracy (Henry Adams)

In this two-part episode, Veterans Chronicles profiles two acclaimed veterans of World War II - Bob Feller and David Thatcher. Feller was one of Major League Baseball's biggest stars in 1941, leading the league in wins. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he immediately enlisted in the Navy, and served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters aboard the USS Alabama, before returning home to resume a Hall of Fame career. David Thatcher took part in one of the most legendary events of the war - Jimmy Doolittle's raid on Tokyo, April 18, 1942. Thatcher would be portrayed in the famed movie, "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo."
