Lee and Daniel decided to go deep (well, as deep as a Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer production can get), both literally and figuratively, as they tackle the epic shouty men on a submarine film, "Crimson Tide" (1995), directed by Tony Scott, and starring Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman as said shouty men. Has the threat of nuclear war ever been more dumb and full of cum? Was Tarantino punching this stuff up needed? The hosts also cover what they've watched as of late. Don Simpson was one-half of one of the most successful production partnerships in Hollywood history. His reality-distortion-field helped bring about films like Flashdance, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, The Rock, Crimson Tide, and Days of Thunder, films that collectively grossed more than $3 billion dollars. Don Simpson's life is a cautionary tale with an ignominious ending forever ensconced in Hollywood history. His appetite for drugs, prostitutes, plastic surgery, black Levi's 501 jeans (worn once and discarded), wrecking Porsches, pharmacology, peanut butter, and pizza got the best of him at age 52. Listen in for the outrageous tale of how a pudgy kid from Alaska talked his way into transforming big-budget Hollywood blockbusters for a new decade. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision-making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 52 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello to discuss the latest film in their Tony Scott series, Crimson Tide (1995). Back in 1993, the U.S Navy allowed studio executives to come in and film their day-to-day operations in the hope of Hollywood making a submarine film in the vein of Top Gun. But what director Tony Scott and producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer took from their experience was a much more serious, deeper connection to the mindset of the officers below, thus became the beginning of a research process that would result in one of the great action thrillers of the 1990s, Crimson Tide. Based on a script by Michael Schiffer (with significant additions by Quentin Tarantino), Scott crafted a masterpiece in tension, pitting two generational actors, Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington, against each other for the battle of not just the ship they are on or the idea of going to all-out war with their enemy, but an examination of who people really are when they are faced with pressure, and just how dangerous or stubborn they can become in the name of having to be provide right. Ryan, Jay, and Sophia break down their feelings on the film, talk way too much about college football, the behind-the-scenes disagreement between Washington and Tarantino, dive deep into Hackman's career at this time, the racial component at the core of the film, the stacked supporting cast, and even sing a little bit of Seal once they get to the Oscar conversation at the end of the episode. Back in 1990, Tony Scott, Jerry Bruckheimer, Don Simpson and Tom Cruise joined forces once again to give us a movie that seemed very familiar. But this time instead of fighter jets, we got race cars with DAYS OF THUNDER. Production trouble, hot headed producers and a budget that was spent on a lot of other things rather than the movie that was being made turned this movie into a nightmare that ultimately still performed well at the box office. The 80's were out and the 90's were in with the Top Gun of NASCAR. Welcome to Director Watch! In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 50 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by the host of The Waffle Press Movie Podcast, Diego Crespo to discuss the latest film in their Tony Scott series, The Last Boy Scout (1991). After the mild success of Days of Thunder, Tony Scott transitioned away from the protective arms of producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer to move over to a Joel Silver project with a script pinned by screenwriter Shane Black, who was coming off of writing Lethal Weapon and turning that into a franchise. But Black was kicked off the second installment of Lethal Weapon, and the script for The Last Boy Scout, a buddy action sports comedy about a private eye and a former pro Quarterback teaming up to stop corruption involving professional football and the US government, became the hottest thing in Hollywood (Black earned a record $1.75 million for the script, with over a $1 million guaranteed up front), and intrigued Scott immensely because of Black's overall vision. Led by the impeccable duo of Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans, this dark, even dystopian vision of 1990s Los Angeles is a relic of 90s action films with tons of politically incorrect, problematic moments of humor that is a cult classic and is a wildly impressive piece of filmmaking within Scott and Black's careers. Ryan, Jay, and Diego break down this complicated film, their history with it, kid acting, the body of work by its two stars Willis and Wayans, their relationship with the game of football, and why we don't get movies like this made anymore. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h03m. With Christopher Nolan now an Oscar-winner, this particular episode of Film Stories begins by zipping back to 2017, when he had a his first serious drive-by of the Academy Awards. That'd be with Dunkirk, the first time he told a true story on film. It took him a long time to be in a position where he felt confident enough to make the film - and even then, he faced some pretty significant technical and logistical challenges to get it made.Even before he asked Warner Bros for the money to make it it.Back in the mid-1990s meanwhile, uber-producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer - best known for the likes of Flashdance and Top Gun - had acquired an unusual project for them, an inspirational teacher film based on a true story. The author of that story, LouAnne Johnson, was alert to working with Hollywood though, and absolutely wouldn't be bowing down to people who thought they were Hollywood royalty. The film Dangerous Minds would, too, take some liberties with her story.Stories of both of these films are told in this very episode... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Tony Scott's 1986 classic Top Gun is a definitive movie for its superstar lead, Tom Cruise. While he's had (arguably) the best run of any movie star on the planet, Top Gun's lead, Maverick, remains the part many of his fans identify him the most with. It took thirty-six years, but Cruise finally has a sequel ready with Top Gun: Maverick and the reviews so far have been outstanding. But, in a bittersweet twist, two of the men who made the film such a smash have since passed away. Uber-producer Don Simpson died in 1996, while Tony Scott died a decade ago, in 2012. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we dig into the history behind Top Gun, including how Cruise was cast and his tense relationship with leading lady Kelly McGills and friendly adversary Val Kilmer. We also get into the real-life training many of the actors playing pilots had to undergo, including Anthony Edwards, who played the loyal but doomed Goose. And, of course, we dig into that iconic soundtrack, which included Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone, Berlin's Take My Breath Away and composer Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem. All of these elements made this the classic it is today, as we reveal in WTF Happened to Top Gun!

Stand-up comic and SNL star Eddie Murphy broke out on the big screen in Eighties movies like 48 Hrs and Trading Places, but his biggest box office successes came while playing Axel Foley, a street-smart Detroit detective as a fish-out-of-water in Beverly Hills, California. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, the first two films were huge hits commercially and critically, and while the third film (directed by John Landis) was panned, it still brought in enough to put the franchise over $700 million at the box office. Oh, and the movie brought us the tune made famous by Crazy Frog. SUBSCRIBE NOW for early access and exclusive bonus episodes at WWW.PATREON.COM/ROTTENREWIND The year is 1991. Tony Scott is still riding the momentum of his generation-defining phenomenon “Top Gun.” Writer Shane Black is the highest paid screenwriter in Hollywood before the age of 30. Bruce Willis' seemingly untouchable star power has been dealt a blow by the recent disaster known as “Hudson Hawk.” Producer Joel Silver is quickly developing a reputation as the most hands-on, hard-nosed producer in Hollywood, coming for Don Simpson's title of belligerent coked-out super producer. So what happens when these 4 massive egos get together and make a $40 million action movie? You get one of the most vile, racially charged, toxic action comedies to ever get the greenlight from a major studio. Is there a “Bad Boys II” without “The Last Boy Scout”? Probably not. Podcast regular and the only cinematographer who has read the 9/11 Commission Report front to back, Jake Ures, joins us again to unpack two of the defining buddy cop action comedies of the 90s. After the aforementioned "Last Boy Scout," we'll be diving into the barely rotten third installment in the "Die Hard" franchise, "Die Hard with a Vengeance" to discuss Bruce Willis' effortless ability to make us root for his toxic antiheroes. Is there any modern actor who can play washed-up action heroes the way Willis did in his prime? Is Jeremy Irons necklace hot? Did "Last Action Hero" need to be as brutally violent as it was and why is the answer a resounding "Fuck yes"? Are we still yearning for a time when the scariest thing Hollywood could imagine was a post-Soviet terrorist blowing up half of New York City to steal some gold? Is Bruce Willis the only man who can still make us laugh at a "Yo Mama" joke? There's only one place to find out.

Getting from here to there has never been so dangerous! Dom Delouse wouldn't have survived 30 feet from the start line. So yeah, its a Cannonball run. That's about all it has in common with the Burt Reynolds classic. This isn't much of a laugh goofball screw fest. What we have here is something in between Deathrace 2000 and Cannonball Run. Its not really funny. Its not really that campy. But its not really a race movie either. Its like a little bit of everything. But wow does it have a lot of Hal Needham shenanigans that is missing from most Corman movies. Speaking of Corman, talk about a huge amount of cameos. Corman himself, Don Simpson, Martin Scorsese, Sly Stallone, Paul Bartel and Dick Miller! Wahhoo. I think what Cannonball suffers from is a very bad job explaining what the heck Dick Miller's character, Bennie, is up to. It turns out that he's trying to help his brother Coy win, but it appears up to about 9/10s of the way through that he's trying to kill Coy. So maybe people just couldn't really put together what was going on and that's completely up to the fault of the editor. And there's quite a bit of bad editing here. Carradine's kung fu is quite terrible. The car chases are moderate. And the driving is lack luster. But when it gets to its second climax (this movie has too many of those) it lights up on fire. It's no Deathrace 2000 but this isn't exactly a pile of dook either.

If you've ever been a bartender, you've heard of Tom Cruise's "Cocktail." You've probably even seen it. Since it's release 34 years ago, the film has become something of a bartender's rite of passage. It's also so much darker than you'd ever think the movie where Tom Cruise flips bottles at a TGIF's would be. For our second installment in our Rotten retrospective on Cruise, we're looking back at 1988's "Cocktail" as well as his 1990 re-teaming with "Top Gun" director Tony Scott for the racing drama "Days of Thunder." Both movies were "high concept" studio films designed to further boost Cruise's celebrity, and both represented critical low points for the actor who would go on to star in the Oscar Best Picture winner the same year as "Cocktail." We're joined by actor Morgan Maher to talk real life service horror stories, while Kourtney dishes out some hot takes on catering. Is "Cocktail" a companion piece to Cruise's "Risky Business" in its dark depiction of Reagan-era individualism and consumerism? Why doesn't the movie want to acknowledge that the all-star bartenders are flipping bottles at a TGIF's??? What war was Cruise's young aspirational bartender fighting in? Has Cruise ever replicated the on-screen chemistry he has with future (and now ex) wife Nicole Kidman? Is "Days of Thunder" the movie that officially broke Don Simpson (or was it all the cocaine, collagen, and fat injected into his dick?) Was "Days of Thunder" propaganda for the tourism board in Glendale? And most importantly... Does "Cocktail" deserve its podcast record low of 7%?!
