Should someone known for community building be accepting gifts for the purposes of blogging? Eden has done similar things to try out products for her personal blog Bargainista.ca. Connie has only received books that people have hoped she would blog about on her law librarian blog http://conniecrosby.blogspot.com. Where is the line? How does one maintain balance? How do you maintain the trust of your readership? Eden and Connie mention: Ford Flex posts, Bargainista post on post on TaB energy drinks, a Molson beer tasting event. We are interested in your opinion! See also Chris Brogan's blog post Advertising and Trust. 22:26 Community calendar. Amrita talks about the blog she created to start.03:08 Other online tools she is using: Twitter and Facebook. She has found that Twitter and the blog have been the best tools for buildingcommunity.04:00 On Facebook she started with ads and a page.04:45 How long did it take to build awareness for the gallery?05:22 Word of mouth has been important to her.05:35 Comparing on-line and off-line community building, she has found them to be similar. With on-line she has been able to reach people further afield geographically.06:24 She has not seen a lot of commercial art galleries doing this kind of community building yet.06:57 She has learned from the past that you need to be yourself, you need to be authentic. You also need to be a very good listener. People who are listened to and given a voice tend to have the most engagement.07:53 Her plans for the future: using the gallery to still make art accessible to those who would like to purchase it; holding more salon type events at the gallery in which people can talk, making it a focal point for the neighbourhood.08:48 Eden winds up the interview08:59 Eden and Connie discuss using face-to-face events to reinforce online communities. Not feeling well this episode. My voice is a little off, so the bulk of the show is some really great podsafe music. Opener -Savium - Stealth-GeekIntro - I'm sorry about the audio quality in the past few shows. I'm working on it. I'm sticking to my attempt to at least have bi-weekly episodes. Another in our fine series of road episodes.. In this one, Dave had just returned from Toronto. While he was there he went to the Futureplay conference (where he was the official blogger) and attended the Toronto Podcast Meetup. The conference was pretty cool, and there were people there from all over the world, including a video game design team from Sweden that made a game for the DS where you serve drinks to bar patrons (seems they know Dave well....) This was probably the first year where someone mentioned that there might be a darker side to games. That said, the conference focussed on the positive. The podcaster meetup included Sage, Katherine, Scarborough Dude, Jay Moonah from Uncle Seth, John Meadows and Mark Blevis (among others). The meetup was a blast, and a great time was had by Dave and the crazy left wing nuts in the Canadian podcasting community.... Next tim eit is off to Paraguay, honestly. Oh, Canada is still ranked number 2 by the IIHF, but we do have the Hockey Hall of Fame which Dave walked by each time he went from his hotel to the conference, so really, we are better than Sweden...
During the conference I recorded a couple of interviews, so besides the keynotes I got to hang out with some cool people and talk games. One of those cool people was (well is, I am sure he is still cool...) Eitan Glinert. Eitan and others have been working on a game that is equally playable for sighted and visually impaired people. Having low vision myself, this game is pretty interesting to me. The game is called Audiodyssey, it is available now as a free download, check it out.He is also getting going on a startup in May called Fire Hose VIdeo Games, so if you need a job in May or so, perhaps you should contact Eitan....Music in this episode is from Uncle Seth, (whose bass player I hung out with at the Toronto Podcast Meetup on Thursday, November 15) and The Mark Harold Band.Listen Now.
