Jeff Carter - Fletcher Prouty's Cold War.Jeff Carter pays tribute to an unjustly maligned figure who had a very important place in the universe of the John Kennedy assassination, especially in relation to JFK's intent to withdraw from Vietnam.Jeff Carter has made a film about the fascinating life and career of Fletcher Prouty.  The first part of Fletcher Prouty's Cold War deals largely with the man's military background.  And Carter goes into much more expansive detail than what I have sketched above.  But beyond that the film handles all of this information with skill and agility.  Carter did an admirable job in finding back up pictures and films to fill in the foreground and background of some very important points in Prouty's career that happen to intersect with modern history. For instance, while at Okinawa, Prouty saw literally tons of equipment being landed and warehoused for a possible invasion of mainland Japan.  But since Japan surrendered before any such invasion, these arms were transferred to Indochina since Ho Chi Minh had been resisting Japan in the August Revolution.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Clicking on individual events will take you to the appropriate web page. Any other business It's been another hectic month here at HPR Towers. As we discussed on the mailing list most of the time was taken by the migration to Mastodon, and the implementation of the mirrors on the Community Content Delivery Network. Some daily stats are been updated on https://hub.hackerpublicradio.org/hpr_ccdn_stats.tsv Summary of the changes to the repo https://repo.anhonesthost.net/HPR Dave updated his tooling for processing shows and they are now available on the Gitea repo. We finally got around to creating the HPR Documentation wiki. Community Content Delivery Network (CCDN) A location to track the deployment of the HPR Community Content Delivery Network, that provides a mirror network for our content. HPR Website Design This is literally in the whiteboard phase of the HPR website redesign. Where we can track Compatibility of the clients subscribed to our feeds. Useful Resources Where we can link to other free culture sites that provide useful services. Requested Topics Where we can track topics that have been requested, and link to shows that addressed them. There is also a list with information about Podcatcher and Podcasting Platform Compatibility. If anyone wants to adopt a player then please do so. The section on Workflow will be changing shortly due to Dave stepping aside, and also the need to distribute to multiple end points. All the processing will happen first, and then all the checks will be done at the same stage just prior to posting. For this to work we need help finding a simple manageable WYSIWYG editor that can produce sane HTML when the host uploads the show. We also need a new system to distribute the files from an origin to all the mirrors. Other changes and fixes. The day of the week is now available on the website. Fixed the RSS feed to show explicit status. Fixed a bug that limited the future feed to just 10 shows. Fixed a typo in the status page. Following feedback, added emphasis about the upcoming two weeks, to the scheduling guidelines. Notable shout out to the people who are promoting HPR and are helping people out with audio issues. HPR4251: Dave and MrX turn over a new leaf

This show has been flagged as Explicit by the host. Introduction Hosts: MrX Dave Morriss We recorded this on Saturday September 14th 2024. This time we were at Swanston Farm, a place we had previously visited for lunch in March 2024. After lunch we adjourned to Dave's car (Studio N) in the car park, and recorded a chat. The details of why it is Studio N instead of Studio C is mentioned in the chat itself! Preparing this show has taken longer than usual this time - apologies! Topics discussed Studio change: Sadly, since the last recording Studio C (Dave's 10-year old Citroën C4 Picasso) self-destructed. It was a diesel car and one of the fuel injectors failed and destroyed the engine management system as it died. It wasn't worth repairing! The replacement is Studio N, a Nissan Leaf, which is an EV (electric vehicle). The price of nearly new EV cars is fairly good in the UK at this time in 2024, so it seemed like a good opportunity to get one. Learning to own and drive an EV can be challenging to some extent: "Range anxiety" and access to charging stations Regenerative braking Fast (DC) charging on the road is relatively expensive (£0.79p per kWh), but is convenient Ideally, a home (AC) charger is required. It will be slower (7 kW per hour) but will be cheaper with a night tariff (£0.085 per kWh versus £0.25 per kWh normal rate) There is potential, with solar panels and a battery, to use free electricity to charge an EV at home MrX might like to move to an EV in the future YouTube channels: Dave is subscribed to a channel called "The Post Apocalyptic Inventor (TPAI)" and recently shared one of the latest videos with MrX. The channel owner collects discarded items from scrapyards in Germany, or buys old bits of equipment, and gets them working again. Milling Machine Adventure! Bring her Home! / Gantry Build I built a CNC Plasma Cutting Table from Scrap! Databases: MrX used dBase on DOS in the past, and received some training in databases. In 2017 he obtained a large csv (comma-separated values) file from the OFCOM (Office of Communications, UK) website containing their Wireless Legacy Register, which contains licensees and frequencies with longitude and latitude values. A means of interrogating this file was sought, having found that spreadsheets were not really very good at handling files of this size (around 200,000 records). MrX used the xsv tool, which was covered in shows hpr2698 and hpr2752 by Mr. Young. It allows a CSV file to be interrogated in quite a lot of detail from the command line. However, with a file of this size it was still quite slow. In a discussion with Dave the subject of the SQLite database came up. Using the SQLite Browser it was simple to load this CSV file into a database and gain rapid access to its contents. SQLite databases may also be queried through a command-line interface which can also be run on a Raspberry Pi, phones, tablets and on a ChromeBook. The textimg tool: This is a command to convert from colored text (ANSI or 256) to an image. Dave generates coloured text from his meal database (HPR show hpr3386 :: What's for dinner?, this being a later enhancement), then captures the output and sends it to a Telegram channel shared with his family. Dave also exchanges weather data obtained from the site wttr.in with Archer72 on Matrix. This is a useful tool for generating images from text, including any text colours. It can be installed from the GitHub copy, and maybe from some package repositories. Using coloured text in BASH (Dave responding to MrX): I have used a function to define variables with colour names: Call a function define_colours which defines (and exports) variables called red, green, etc. Using red=$(tput setaf 1); export red I use the colours in two ways: Method 1: use these names in echo "${red}Red text${reset}" Method 2: use another function coloured which takes two arguments, a colour name (as a string) and a message. The script encloses the message argument in a colour variable and a reset. The colour name argument is used in a redirection to turn red into the contents of the variable $red. This probably needs a show to explain things fully. Terminal multiplexers: Dave and MrX use GNU screen. Both recognise that the alternative tmux might be better to use in terms of features, but are reluctant to learn a new interface! Dave has noticed a new open-source alternative called zellij but has not yet used it. Variable weather: Dealing with hot weather: YouTube, Techmoan channel PERSONAL AIRCON - Ranvoo Aice Lite Review MrX had recently had a holiday in the Lake District where the weather was good. In Scotland the weather has been wet and windy in the same period. Spectrum24, OggCamp: MrX is attending his first OggCamp in Manchester. Dave will be attending too, as will Ken. HPR has a table/booth at OggCamp. Ken was recently at Spectrum24, an amateur radio conference in Paris. Meshtastic an open source, off-grid, decentralized, mesh network built to run on affordable, low-power devices Old inkjet printers: MrX has an Epson R300 printer where the black ink seems to have dried up. Dave has an old HP Inkjet with the same type of problem. This printer has a scanner and FAX capability. An HPR show was done in 2015 describing how it was set up to use a Raspberry Pi to make it available on the local network. Propelling or mechanical pencils: Dave had a Pentel GraphGear 1000 propelling (aka mechanical) pencil which was mentioned on HPR show 3197. This was dropped onto concrete, and didn't appear damaged at the time, but it apparently received internal damage and eventually fell apart. Links Electric cars: EV (electric vehicle) Regenerative braking Databases SQLite: SQLite SQLite Browser An Easy Way to Master SQLite Fast Open source SQLite Studio available for Linux SQLiteStudio SQL: Origins: The Birth of SQL & the Relational Database Intricacies: MySQL JOIN Types Poster (Steve Stedman) Design: How to Fake a Database Design - Curtis Poe (Ovid) The textimg tool: GitHub repository: textimg zellij: Website: zellij Github repository: zellij Quote from the repo: Zellij is a workspace aimed at developers, ops-oriented people and anyone who loves the terminal. Similar programs are sometimes called "Terminal Multiplexers". Provide feedback on this episode.

Message from Dave Morriss I am planning to "retire" from the Hacker Public Radio Janitorial Team. I have been helping to administer HPR for over 12 years now. I first offered help to Ken in 2012 in response to an appeal he made. We met at OggCamp in that year, and I joined the Community News recording for episode 1066 in September 2012. My first show was 1091 in October that year. I will turn 75 in December 2024, and am finding that I don't have the energy to do as much as I could when I first joined. I also want to be able to devote more time to the various personal projects I have. I plan to consolidate all my scripts on the HPR Gitea repositories, and document all the processes I have been looking after. I want to have completed the handover by the end of March 2025. I will continue as an HPR host for as long as I can after that. I have had a wonderful 12 years as an HPR Janitor and will always look back on it with great pleasure. Ananda Developments Finance Director Jeremy Sturgess-Smith joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce significant advancements for the company. Two of Ananda's patent-pending cannabinoid medicines, MRX2 and MRX2T, will be used in two Phase IIIa epilepsy clinical trials, co-funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the NHS. The trials, conducted by investigators at University College London and Great Ormond Street Hospital, will involve up to 500 patients and represent the world's first double-blind randomized controlled trials to investigate the combined use of cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) for epilepsy. These will also be the first to evaluate such treatments for both children and adults with difficult-to-treat epilepsies. Sturgess shared that the MRX formulations will serve as the investigational medicinal products for these ground-breaking trials, which aim to support a marketing authorization application for MRX2 and MRX2T. Should the trials yield positive results, Ananda plans to advance further regulatory and commercial development activities for these medicines. The trials will assess the safety and efficacy of the specific cannabidiol and CBD plus THC formulations in patients suffering from two forms of treatment-resistant epilepsy. Favorable results could pave the way for submission to the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and other regulatory bodies, moving Ananda one step closer to introducing innovative cannabinoid treatments for epilepsy. #proactiveinvestors #anandadevelopmentsplc #aqse #ana #EpilepsyResearch #CannabinoidMedicine #ClinicalTrials #CBDTherapy #PharmaInnovation #NIHR #Healthcare #EpilepsyTreatment#invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

These are things like pictures, videos, example scripts and configuration files. During the move to the current static site these were not copied over, and the shows on the HPR server have been incomplete since then (the Internet Archive versions are complete however). A process to "repair" these shows has been started. It relies on the fact that there are copies of the lost files on the Internet Archive, and on a backup disk. These are being copied across to the HPR server and linked into shows again. We are restoring the missing parts of shows one at a time. The process is largely automated, but there is still a manual component. We are gradually fully automating it as time allows. We will document the progress here. This is the current repair state: +------------+------------+--------------+------------------+ | date | repairable | repair_count | unrepaired_count | +------------+------------+--------------+------------------+ | 2024-08-01 | 352 | 148 | 204 | +------------+------------+--------------+------------------+ Spectrum24 Conference spectrumconf@mastodon.radio - Remember, the call-for-booths for the #spectrum24 conference is still open: If you are interested in showing of your project to an audience that is just as passionate about radio as you, drop us a mail: info@spectrum-conference.org Check out the list of currently confirmed booths https://spectrum-conference.org/24/booths Spectrum24 is free but, to manage the practicle side of the conference, we do ask you to register: https://ticketplace.ch/?op=booking&id=45 #hamradio #callforbooths

Introduction Hosts: MrX Dave Morriss We recorded this on Sunday May 26th 2024. We were pleased to discover that our favourite pub where we've had lunch in the past, The Steading, had not closed permanently following the sale of the premises. That's where we met for lunch. Thus the show title: The Steading is now back on course1. After lunch we as usual adjourned to Dave's Citroen car (Studio C) in the car park, and recorded a chat. Topics discussed YouTube channel recommendations (Dave) AT Restoration: Ahti is a furniture restorer from Estonia. The episodes contain no speech, just ambient sounds, but there is English text on-screen at times. Music is included for the final part where the item is shown in its before and after states. Shows some amazing skill in repairing all kinds of old furniture as well as some new builds. I found a surprise inside the 150 year old chair/armchair restoration: In this episode Ahti restores an armchair and shows the woodwork and upholstery required. Phil Vandelay: The channel is about designing and building cargo bikes, machines, furniture and more. The earlier shows contain no speech, just on-screen explanations. In later episodes there is more description and explanation. The level of engineering is high, and the host develops his metalworking workshop and skills as episodes progress. How to Build your own Cargo Bike (Short Version!): recent re-edit and re-release of the original. This seems to be the second cargo bike he has built, and later he builds yet another, this time electric. How to Build a DIY Cargo Bike (Plans available!): full version of the build. Ocean Conservation Namibia: A Namibia-based team rescuing Cape fur seals from entanglements in marine garbage. The seals are mainly on the beach and the team runs to intercept the ones they spot with garbage around them. They net them and remove whatever they have picked up and release the seals. In many cases the fishing line, net, or other junk has cut deeply into the seal's skin and muscle, and would kill them if not removed. Episodes are usually daily and mostly short. 34 Seals Rescued In One Day!: a recent episode, one of the longest. Digressions! Talking about varnishes for wood. Dave forgot the name of the varnish-like finish shellac, which is used in the technique of French Polishing. Woodwork: MrX made a stand for his music keyboard Dave made an unfashionable chair in the 1970s (similar in design and colour to the outer chairs in the image) Image copyright © https://www.design-market.co Grass-cutting, etc: Repairing a strimmer (aka string trimmer) Plastics: Bakelite was one of the earliest plastics Dave owns a valve radio which has a Bakelite case Computers owned over time (MrX) Sinclair ZX Spectrum: Released in 1982 Z80 (8-bit) CPU The original Spectrum had rubber-like keys MrX had a modified system with a keyboard upgrade - the DK'Tronics The Spectrum was used for Amateur Radio purposes: Morse code decoding Slow Scan Television (SSTV) RadioTeletype (RTTY) Dragon 32: Released in 1982 6809 (8-bit) CPU Better keyboard Centronics parallel (printer port) MrX had a pen plotter at one point, possibly an Epson Dave mentioned that he had used flat-bed pen plotters and large drum plotters at work The Dragon 32 was used for Packet Radio This is a data transfer protocol based on X.25 (called AX.25, Amateur X.25) Commodore Amiga: Released in 1985 Motorola 68000 series CPU, 16-bit and 32-bit models AmigaOS operating system; blitter AX.25 software Intel i386 PC Running Windows 3.1 PK232-MBX packet radio modem (manual) The PK232-MBX was similar to a telephone modem except it connected to radio. The MBX was a super deluxe model that had some extra features. It could do all the same things that the basic PK232 could do (see details from manual linked above) plus it could also do WeFax (WeatherFAX) and had a basic Packet-Radio mailbox facility. The two models could deal with morse code, Baudot and ASCII RadioTeletype (RTTY), AMTOR (Amateur Teleprinting Over Radio) and Packet-Radio, using in-built software. The connected radio would switch between transmit and receive to send and acknowledge packets of information. The computer was connected by serial RS232 connection. Basic commands were used to control the modem. Any computer capable of talking over RS232 could be used. Currently a Dell Optiplex ex business machine: 4GB of RAM and a Pentium Dual-Core E5500 CPU clocked at 2.8 GHz Ubuntu 18 LTS & Windows 7, needed in order to reprogram Amateur radios Digressions: Dave remembered seeing an example of the Nascom 1 at Lancaster University around 1978/79. This was a single board computer kit using the Z80 CPU. Comparing a VAX "mainframe" with a Raspberry Pi: Not simple! From 1987 Dave managed two clustered VAX 8700s. These were single CPU systems with a 32-bit word length and up to 512MB of memory. It's possible for a Raspberry Pi to emulate a VAX running the VMS operating system, though Dave has no direct experience. With the RPi 4 and 5 there's a good chance that performance compared to an actual VAX might be similar if not better. This is just guesswork however! Apollo Guidance Computer: MrX discusses the development of these systems at NASA, which had to be small and very reliable. Use of integrated circuits which were very expensive and variable in quality. Use of rejected chips in other projects so they were not wasted. Finding information about things from the 1970s and 1980s: It's surprisingly hard to find much about technology, IT and so forth from that era. Information that existed on paper, in newspapers and magazines from that time has apparently never been recorded and made searchable. Burroughs Corporation: Dave worked on a Burroughs B6930 mainframe in the early 1980s at Heriot-Watt University. The Burroughs terminals model TD830 ran on two coaxial cables to connect to the mainframe and to each other in a sort of "bus" configuration. Dave has a new PC waiting to be set up. It's from TUXEDO Computers in Germany. It's an AMD Ryzen 7000 Raspberry Pi development: MrX is having difficulty finding time to work on his. Dave has set up two RPi 4B systems which boot off USB SSDs, one Pi running Pi-Hole. He has further plans for both, but hasn't done much yet. Dave also has a RPi 5 with a Pimoroni card under it holding a 500GB NVME M.2 card. The plan is to boot it off this disk, but it needs a case and a means of mounting to a DIN rail. Various computer problems: Dave had problems after an upgrade of Debian Testing on his main desktop, since the previous of these shows. The upgrade left the PC in an unusable state with no desktop manager, and it took some time to repair it (installing and configuring from the console). MrX upgraded a Raspberry Pi successfully, then applied another upgrade which failed. He was able to revert to the previous state luckily, but still has an out of date OS. Dave's laptop running KDE Neon failed due to not upgrading it frequently enough, so in this case, since it had nothing of importance on it, he just installed Linux Mint over the top of it! MrX still has a usable Eee PC, though the battery has failed. This is the model 700. Dave also has a Eee PC, the 1000 model, but hasn't used it for a while. Steady as she goes - a Nautical expression. A cry to a helmsman to keep on the current course.↩︎

Any other business Many Podcatchers don't show the episode author It seems that the author fields in RSS and Atom feeds are not shown by a number of Podcatchers. This field is intended to show the author details, and with HPR shows it contains an obfuscated email address and a name: ken.nospam@nospam.fallon.ie (Ken Fallon) The lack of this information makes knowing who created a given HPR show difficult to determine before listening to it. A question has been raised as to whether we could include the author details at the start of the show notes. Comments are requested from the Community as to whether this would be a useful addition. Introduction Hosts: MrX Dave Morriss We recorded this on Saturday February 25th 2024. Our favourite pub for lunch, The Steading, seemed to have closed since we were last there. Research into what was going on led to the information that the company owning this and several other pubs in the area was selling them all. We decided to try another place in the Pentland Hills area, and went to the Brasserie at Swanston Farm for lunch, which was pretty good. After lunch we as usual adjourned to Dave's Citroen car (Studio C) in the car park, and recorded a chat. Topics discussed YouTube channel recommendations (Dave) A channel about astronomy and science. Anton goes into a fair amount of depth about subjects in the news relating to these themes: Anton Petrov Recent episode: Study Explains Dark Energy and Inflation as Parallel Universes Colliding A channel which is all about making things out of junk. No speech, and only a small amount of music as the build comes together: Epic UpCycling Just watched this one, and am in awe! A Treasure Chest of Secret Drawers made from Pallets and Scrap Terrible weather with highs winds and / or lashing rain (MrX) Seems to be never ending. Have noticed quite a few fences down Large tree down blocking entrance to local park Both parents houses sustained damage, fences and roof tiles. So far we have been lucky with no damage My mother was injured while going out to rescue her outside bucket Possibly related, it seems car insurance prices are increasing (MrX) I have seen some link this to the high repair cost for modern cars because they have lots of high tech included. In particular the sensors placed in bumpers. Some have speculated this to be because the high repair cost of EV's. I came across this YouTube video that shows that global insurance claims have been historically large in recent years due to natural disasters. While the video concentrates on properties I'm sure it also will be affecting car insurance. I believe this likely to be having the most prominent factor for insurance increases. Insurers ABANDONING high climate risk properties I got a Steam Deck for Christmas! (Dave) I borrowed my son's Nintendo Switch in November 2023 to see if I could see the screen and play games on it. I could, but haven't played games since the 1980's so I'm terrible at it! I told them I might buy myself a Steam Deck in 2024, but wasn't sure. Much to my surprise my family jointly bought me a Steam Deck for Christmas! I am pretty bad at using it, but I'm practising I'm learning Stardew Valley at first, but I'd quite like to try Kerbal Space Programme at some point. Cinema visits / movies: (MrX) Hunger Games pre sequel Was not rated very highly but me and Mrs X actually really enjoyed it. Oppenheimer Knowing something of the background story was advantageous Barbie Watched on DVD! Ticks (Dave) We spoke about this subject last time we met. Later, I was reminded of a disease called alpha-gal syndrome, first detected in the USA, which can follow a tick bite. It is caused by the injection of a carbohydrate by the tick, which it has obtained by feeding on another mammal. The carbohydrate is called Galactose-α-1,3-galactose, also known as alpha-gal. This causes a strong immune reaction because it's a foreign substance which isn't found in humans. The result is an allergy to red meat, which contains alpha-gal! This syndrome has been found in the USA and Australia and several other places, but now seems to be coming to Europe and has been seen in the UK. Dog-friendly places (MrX) Waterstones book store is dog friendly. Possibly only relevant to people living in Britain? They have a cafe upstairs which accepts dogs. The pub we used to meet in, The Steading, was dog friendly as well. The latest venue does not seem to be, but is a restaurant, not a pub. Raspberry Pi stuff (both) Dave pre-ordered a RPi 5 in November 2023 and it arrived in December. He decided to get a Pimoroni NVMe Base to take an SSD, and ordered that once it was available on pre-order. Now the RPi 5 is equipped with a 500GB SSD attached underneath, running off the PCIe interface. Dave is working at setting up two RPi 4B systems, and a RPi 3A to run various services in his house. Currently setting up Pi-hole. The RPi 5 will be added to this combination in due course. MrX bought a RPi 4B in 2023 (as they became more available) which he initially intended setting up with XBMC. He had problems playing certain video resolutions with the latest version of LibreELEC running XBMC. He has now decided to use it to replace an ageing server located upstairs. Dave's 'what_pi' script that tells you about your Pi's settings doesn't work on Raspberry Pi OS since this OS stores the information it needs quite differently from Raspbian. Visit to Blackpool (MrX) Met up with family for the long weekend in Blackpool. It was bitterly cold and very windy, but we had a good time. While there we were lucky to get a trip on a 100 year old tram. The tram had very unique seats that allowed you to flip the back over, so they are pointed in either direction, depending on the direction of travel. I thought this was very clever. Haven't seen this on modern buses or trams, perhaps because they don't meet modern safety regulations. Edinburgh Trams (MrX) Following Dave's recommendation from our last show. Me, Mrs X and our 4 legged companion took the tram all the way from Ingliston park and ride to Newhaven. Our four legged companion loved the trams. Seems there has been so much development. Saw lots of new things along the way. Lots of other interesting places and walks for future trips. Can't believe it's taken us so long to appreciate the tram. We have used the train in the past but it's a bit limited by the places it goes though it is very convenient from our location. Think we may be using the tram a bit more in future. HPR changes (Dave) Ken has enhanced some aspects of the calendar page: Reserved show overview - a list of what's in the reserve queue with date, host and show title (suggestion from Archer72). Statistics - a call interface that returns JSON data containing most of the old statistics plus a few more (requested by MrX). These changes were also mentioned in the last Community News TLDR (MrX) Mentioned in one of Klaatu's recent shows From the slang expression TL;DR or tl;dr, short for "too long; didn't read" (see Wikipedia page) Quote: The tldr pages are a community effort to simplify the beloved man pages with practical examples. Details: Website: https://tldr.sh GitHub: https://github.com/tldr-pages/tldr Mastodon: https://fosstodon.org/@tldr_pages (@tldr_pages@fosstodon.org) Matrix: https://matrix.to/#/#tldr-pages:matrix.org Many clients available: see https://github.com/tldr-pages/tldr/wiki/tldr-pages-clients Bash help command (Dave) There is a help command in Bash which is useful for getting information about Bash built-in commands. For example 'help read' will give you a one-page summary of this command which saves a lot of searching through the Bash man page. The example mentioned in the audio 'help test' also works, but since it's a stand-alone command the result is quite similar to typing 'man test'. There are very few (if any) examples though, and that's where tldr will be better!

Introduction Hosts: MrX Dave Morriss We recorded this on Sunday September 3rd 2023. We met in person again, and as before first visited the pub called The Steading where we had lunch. Then we adjourned to Dave's car in the car park, and recorded a chat. The name "Steading" is another (Scots?) version of "Farmstead", and means the same. It's also an anagram of "Sedating"1, so ... Topics discussed Vaccines: Dave has an appointment for COVID-19 and influenza vaccines. The new Omicron variant BA.2.86 has prompted another booster for some people. Discussion of Smallpox vaccination MrX has an appointment for an influenza vaccine Glasgow: MrX and MrsX recently stayed in Glasgow for a holiday Point A Hotel - boutique hotel Jungle Rumble - indoor golf with UV lighting! Wikipedia: Glasgow Subway Edinburgh: Dave took a trip on the recently extended Edinburgh tram There is only one route, from the airport to Leith (port). Older residents get free access. MrX and MrsX recently walked from the centre of Edinburgh along the Water of Leith to the area where the tram terminus is at Newhaven. Email: Dave is using version Thunderbird 115.1.1 which is a rewrite of the original series where the API has now changed a lot. Long-used add-ons now no longer work: A favourite was Mailbox Alert which triggered sound alerts (or others) then mail arrived in a folder - so this could be after filtering. This was much more useful than the traditional "You have mail" type alerts. Discussion of tags: MrX mentions tags, meaning bits of text that can be attached to messages and used to classify them and to search for them. In Gmail there are labels which can do this and these can be used to group messages regardless of folders Thunderbird also has this concept which it calls tags. It comes with pre-defined tags such as Important and To Do, but more tags can be added. Any message can be given one or more tags. The filtering system can add tags as a message is processed. Searches can be performed on tags also. Dave is an enthusiast of nested folders with filters to classify messages. MrX is keen on using tags for the same purpose. Dave mentioned Thunderbird's saved search feature (which he wrongly called virtual mailboxes) which can collect messages according to many criteria, including tags. Some discussion about mail message storage strategies: file per message, mbox format, etc. Ticks: MrX's dog has brought some ticks back from recent walks. Scotland seems to be a bit worse off for ticks in recent years. Hikers need to protect against them and to perform checks that they are not on clothes. Wearing long socks or gaiters over long trousers can help. Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection that can be passed by ticks. This Week in Parasitism recently talked about an unpleasant disease caught from ticks, Babesiosis (not bacterial as Dave thought, but caused by a protozoan). This was in the USA; the disease doesn't seem to be in the UK at the moment. Removal of ticks needs a tool or a fine pair of tweezers. Audacity: Ahuka did a recent show (hpr3927 :: Audacity Update 20230702) on some problems he'd encountered. Video on YouTube: What Ever Happened to Audacity? Audacity-like tool in the browser: Wavacity Edinburgh Festival and Festival Fringe: MrX attended a show by Michael Shafar, the comedian Dave hasn't been to much at the Festival/Fringe in recent years. He saw the Doug Anthony All Stars when they were active many years ago, and found them funny but intimidating! HPR changes: Mentioned on the recent HPR Community News Problem reports can be sent by email to admin at HPR, as messages to @hpr@botsin.space on Mastodon, and to the #hpr:matrix.org channel on Matrix. Watching and listening: MrX has been watching the YouTube channel Little Chinese Everywhere, recommended in the last of these chats. MrX has also been listening to the BBC radio show Computing Britain. It consists of 12 15-minute episodes, from 2015, and is available as a podcast. YouTube recommendations: Dave: Not Just Bikes: A channel about cycling and city design. The channel owner is Canadian but has moved to Amsterdam for a better life for himself and his family. He highlights the differences between North American city design and the design of many European cities. Example video: Even Small Towns are Great Here (5 Years in the Netherlands) BicycleDutch: Another channel about cycling in the Netherlands. This channel host, Mark Wagenbuur, is Dutch and does videos about cycle routes, and their development. Lots of videos made as he cycles a route. He is based in 's-Hertogenbosch (map) and cycles in the region and to and from Utrecht. Dan's mission at Quirks is to expand the company's digital offerings and global presence. The day-to-day of Dan's responsibilities revolves around staying abreast of industry trends and delivering valuable information to their audience. Introduction Hosts: MrX Dave Morriss We recorded this on Saturday May 20th 2023. We met in person again, and as before first visited the pub called The Steading where we had lunch. Then we adjourned to Dave's Citroen car (Studio C) in the car park, and recorded a chat. The region where we met is close to a village called Hillend, which led to the show title. Topics discussed ChatGPT: MrX did two shows in May using ChatGPT. He has used it more than Dave has. MrX has an iPhone and can use ChatGPT from it. He uses it as a source of information when out and about. For instance, to find out about the history of Musselburgh Harbour. MrX has also used ChatGPT to write experimental Python scripts. There is a TED talk by Greg Brockman, the inventor of ChatGPT. Discussion of the Call Annie app ELIZA the program that was written in the 1960s and simulated conversation well enough to convince people. Audacity/Tenacity audio editors: Web sites: Audacity and Tenacity. Audacity Wikipedia page MrX and Dave have both used Audacity for several years. Audacity was forked after it was taken over by Muse Group, and Tenacity was developed. However, it doesn't seem that there have been any releases on Tenacity to date. The most recent versions of Audacity have contained changes - in particular the way the audio project is stored has changed. Instead of a directory filled with various files there is now a single project file with the extension .aup3 which is a SQLite database. This was changed in March 2021 for Version 3.0. Previously Audacity stored the project as a file called .aup and a directory called _data/ containing sub-directories and files. MrX reports changes in the way multiple tracks are handled. Dave finds that the horizontal scrollbar has disappeared (which seems to be a bug). Dr John Campbell: YouTube channel During the COVID-19 epidemic the channel contained a lot of information about the SARS-CoV-2 virus, vaccines, disease, treatments, etc, which seemed to be helpful and well researched. At one point there was a lot of talk about Ivermectin as a drug that could help with the disease, but although this received no support from scientific research, it seemed to be receiving more and more exposure on the channel. From then on the quality of the content on the channel seemed to deteriorate, and it no longer seems trustworthy. Other sources have been critical, including Debunk the Funk with Dr Wilson The Doctor Who Exhibition: Dave met with Andrew Conway and Andrew's friend, and all went to the exhibition held at the National Museum of Scotland. The exhibition contained a lot of Doctor Who memorabilia, including some original props. MrX and the group that went to the exhibition have all watched Doctor Who over the years. All have lost interest at some point but then resumed, particularly after the show was restarted in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper. Discussion about the BBC Radiophonic Workshop where the Doctor Who sound effects were made as well as the signature tune. Also the Mellotron, a keyboard that played tape loops. Mechanical musical instruments: The Swedish band Wintergatan use mechanical instruments in their music and Martin Molin, a band member is responsible for some of them. He did a series on YouTube about mechanical instruments: Music Machine Mondays at the Museum Speelklok in Utrecht which is great to watch if you are interested. Dave also mentioned musical instrument museums in Berlin and Brussels. MrX mentioned a museum in Dalbeattie, a town in Dumfries and Galloway in the Scottish Borders. In the museum there had been a chance to play a barrel organ. YouTube channels: Dave: (Mentioned earlier) Debunk the Funk with Dr Wilson - the host, Dan Wilson, has a Ph.D. in molecular biology that covers bad science while making good science accessible. The channel focuses mainly on pseudoscience surrounding the anti-vaccine movement and COVID misinformation. Little Chinese Everywhere - Yan is a Human Geographer who studied in Switzerland. The first season was “The Longest Way Back Home (Switzerland to China)” where she travelled over land to China. She is now producing videos for season 2 about China itself. She plans to visit every province in mainland China and make videos. Dave mentioned the episode about Yanjin City in Yunnan. It is mentioned in Wikipedia as the “World's Narrowest City”, either side of the narrow Heng River valley, a tributary of the Yangtze. MrX: Ron Mattino - a channel dedicated to electronics, programming and engineering. Mentioned episode about the pins on a smartphone battery: Why do MOBILE BATTERIES have THREE terminals? A simple Explanation. The UK Academic network (JANET) initially used its own Coloured Book protocols, including Grey Book mail. This ran over an X.25 network. Gradual transition to TCP/IP and SMTP mail (over JANET Internet Protocol Service, “JIPS”). In early Unix days (Ultrix) there was MH (Message Handler) Later, this was replaced by nmh. A GUI interface was available called xmh A very flexible open-source front end called exmh was crafted using Tcl/Tk Using procmail allowed an enormous number of capabilities, like sophisticated filtering, spam detection and automatic replies. Now using Thunderbird, and has been for maybe 15 years. MrX used Eudora in the past, but mostly uses Outlook now. Both agree that many useful features of email, available in the past, have gone. Both of us still find email relevant however! Calendars: MrX misses the calendar on the Psion Organiser Dave used to use an X-Windows tool called ical on Ultrix (no relation to the later iCalendar standard). Moved to Thunderbird and its calendar called Lightning. Both have used the Google Calendar, Dave uses a Thunderbird add-on to share family calendars Lifetime of storage media: SD cards can last a fairly long time, but getting the right type is important. Using older-style cards in new projects might turn out to be a false economy. Hard disks can last a long time if the right sort is used. One thing that shortens their life is getting them hot. MrX has used Western Digital Passport hard drives for some time, and they have been very reliable – none have failed. There are different drives from Western Digital which have different performances and they are colour coded. See the Western Digital website for details. Complexity and single points of failure: Chip shortages and lack of resilience: Modern components that do a single job used to consist of multiple discrete components that could be replaced individually. Now, if a component fails it has to be replaced in its entirety, and because of the shortage of chips it uses it may be unavailable. Older devices and components may still use older less specialised parts and so can be repaired. Unnecessary reliance on GPS in devices, cloud services in Smart Home equipment, etc. For example, managing enormous warehouses requires a lot of services that may not be too resilient, and could fail catastrophically. Coronal Mass Ejection (CME): Such an event could destroy many satellites (such as those providing GPS). It could also cause a massive overload of the power grid. Transformers used in the grid can be damaged or destroyed and replacing them in a timely fashion can be difficult. Carrington event in September 1859 telegraph machines reportedly shocked operators and caused small fires. March 1989 CME caused a power outage in Quebec, Canada. Recent YouTube video from Anton Petrov: Wow! Sun Just Produced a Carrington Like Event, But We Got Super Lucky Keeping systems up to date: MrX has had problems getting various RPis updated and running. Dave has had similar problems making the jump from Raspbian to Raspberry Pi OS. In some cases the operating system on the Pis have needed to be completely reinstalled, and the work in installing and reconfiguring software has proved to be too much! MrX's PiFace Control and Display board is giving problems, as is the simpler PiFace Digital. It looks as if the company has gone out of business unfortunately. Dave has a Pico RGB Base from Pimoroni, a 14-key board with RGB LEDs which could be used as a way of controlling things. Dave's Magic Mirror system (a Pi 3A+ attached to a monitor) failed because the Pi needed to be upgraded and then the Node.js code didn't seem to be maintained any more! Needs work!! MrX's desktop PC is small and quiet, but since it's in a cold room, tends not to get used too much in the winter! Dave's PC is in an extension (addition) to the house and tends to get used quite a lot, but in cold winter weather, less so. YouTube list: We were going to mention a few YouTube channels we'd watched lately, but felt we'd already talked long enough! Rather than just adding the list to the notes, as we discussed, we will leave this section to the next time we make a recording such as this. Completing HPR shows: MrX has a show he has recorded but is held up preparing notes to go with it. Dave tends to write draft notes first, then build the recording around them, but this approach isn't necessarily faster! Welcome back to Season 6 of Intellicast! We've got a news-filled episode for you this week so buckle-up! Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are sharing the latest market research updates and breaking news for the second week in a row! The guys kick-off the episode with a conference overview, including those that EMI will be attending. The MRX conference season starts in just a few weeks, so it's a good idea to have a grasp on what's happening and when. They also give a quick ESOMAR election update as this story continues to unfold. To start the news segment of this episode, Brian and Brian touch on Momentive's report of an 8% revenue increase for the full year of 2022 and their restructuring plan that will eliminate 11% of their workforce. In a similar vein, they later discuss Big Village, formerly Engine Group, and how they have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Big Village also announced that they have secured a purchaser for their agency, Insights and Balihoo businesses, to the Refuel Agency. Stepping into a few more positive news stories, the Brians get to discuss some new brand names and identities! They talk about Simon Kucher's new brand identity based around “unlocking better growth,” Ipsos's acquisition of Xperiti, News Corp Australia's launch of The Growth D_Stillery, and McKinsey's acquisition of Iguazio. You can already guess that this leads Brian Lamar down a rabbit hole of brand name jokes and a celebration of our first underscore in a brand name! Welcome back to Season 6 of Intellicast! You've made it to the second episode! Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are joined by EMI's one and only Mary Draper to discuss some of the latest market research news and our anticipated trends for the industry in 2023. The episode kicks-off with about five minutes of football chat as Mary is a huge (albeit occasionally grumpy) Bengals fan and some conference chat as conference season is upon us! Then, the guys and Mary jump into some industry news with the announcement that Screen Engine has acquired Coherency, a brand insights and strategy company. They follow this by touching on The Market Research Institute International's (MRII) naming of Paul Hunter as its 2023 president. Brian Lamar will also be joining the board! In the next segment, Mary and the Brians discuss some staffing news in the MRX industry. KS&R has promoted three of their long term employees to Directors. They also Nielsen who, following its restructuring into three global units, has announced that it will reducing its headcount to its numbers in early 2022. In the final news segment, the crew analyzes the FTC's proposed rule that would ban non-competes for workers, stating that non-compete agreements on workers constitute an unfair method of competition and therefore violate Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act because they restrict freedom of job change. The episode rounds out with a discussion on the future of market research and some of the trends we anticipate this year including continued consolidation, new legislation, and more. You can read more of our predictions here. This is a great episode that will have you asking lots of questions like, where is our industry headed? Do the Bengals need a villain story? Should all market researchers get Dutton Ranch brands? Tune in to hear more. Thanks for listening! Don't forget to reach out and give us your suggestions for the new intro music! This discussion takes place on the Mail List which is open to all HPR listeners and contributors. The discussions are open and available on the HPR server under Mailman. Quoting the site: This is the LWN.net community event calendar, where we track events of interest to people using and developing Linux and free software. Clicking on individual events will take you to the appropriate web page. Any other business HPR RSS feeds and https links A question came up in November regarding the HPR RSS feeds. All of the URLs in these feeds use 'http' as opposed to 'https'. Although this may seem odd, this is a fairly common thing to do, because the RSS standard (such as it is) does not cater for 'https' links. There is a concern that passing an RSS feed with such links to a validator (such as the W3C Feed Validation Service) will result in it being marked as invalid. Older HPR shows on archive.org, phase 2 Now that all shows from number 1 to the latest have been uploaded to the Internet Archive there are other tasks to perform. Welcome back to Intellicast! Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are diving into another news-fueled episode today. In the episode's first segment, Brian Lamar goes rogue with an off-script news story that literally hits his inbox as we were recording. Schlesinger Group announced that Reed Cundiff will be their new CEO replacing Steve Schlesinger who has served as CEO for the past 20 years. Friend of the podcast, Isaac Rogers was also promoted to President. Continuing with this theme, the guys discuss Dynata's announcement that they have appointed Mike Petrullo formerly of Dodge Data & Analytics as CEO, replacing Gary Laben. This leads down a bit of a rabbit hole on big-name free agents in MRX and what they might be doing next.  In the next segment, Brian and Brian chat about Forsta's partnership with CX data specialist GemSeek to launch a predictive net promoter score that will allow clients to access predictions about “silent customers” who don't respond to surveys or submit feedback. This begs the question—if your experience is just "fine” do you really need to complete an NPS survey? ESOMAR also announced the results of its council elections. Brian Lamar and Producer Brian discuss some of the highlights including friend of the podcast, Lisa Wilding-Brown's reelection, and former guest Nikki Lavoie's nomination as President-Elect. They also touch on the news that Verisk has sold Mackenzie Wood to Veritas Capital for over $3.1B—a huge acquisition. The episode wraps up with two Escalent stories. The first is about how they have launched a new solution called Tech TrustBuilder to help understand how brands can build consumer trust in technology. The second is Escalent's acquisition of Rhein Associates and the launch of a new practice focused on Commercial and Fleet vehicles. Thanks for listening!
