In episode 8 of the GSGEDM Behind-The-Scenes podcast, the GSGEDM Team appreciates Detroit for its local community and its international reach as a hub for dance music. Movement Festival has been the foundation of techno tourism in Detroit, since its beginnings as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2001. It is also the foundation of the GSGEDM film - shooting began there in 2011 to tell The Story of Detroit Techno. Movement encourages the Memorial Day Weekend pilgrimage that techno fans all over the world take to Detroit to get a taste of its one-of-a-kind dance music scene. It is that time of year again, and the team is longing for the techno-induced, party-packed weekend that makes for a magical time in Detroit. In honor of this, please come along on a Movement “meditation”, reminiscing with stories and memories from members of the GSGEDM team (David Grandison & Reggie Dokes), as well as Belgium's DJ Red D, Detroit journalist Gary Graff, and Fusicology's Asya Shein.-Support the independent filmmaking process and get yourself some GSGEDM merch! http://gsgedm.com/shop-Stay updated with GSGEDM on Instagram and Facebook!https://www.instagram.com/GodSaidGiveEmDrumMachines/https://www.facebook.com/GodSaidGiveEmDrumMachines/-Visit Hart Plaza and watch a DEMF recap video on MusicOrigins.orghttps://www.musicorigins.org/item/the-detroit-electronic-music-festival/-Learn more about topics covered in the film and Detroit culture in the Detroit Techno 101https://www.musicorigins.org/detroit-techno-101/ -Get connected with Detroit music journalist Gary Graff:https://twitter.com/GraffonMusic-Check out DJ Red D:https://www.facebook.com/djreddbelgiumwww.instagram.com/djreddbelgiumofficial-Learn more about Asya Shein:https://asyashein.com/bio/Check out Fusicology:https://www.fusicology.com/-Learn more about Movement:https://www.movement.us/https://twitch.tv/paxahau-Check out The Music Origins Project: https://www.musicorigins.org/technomecca/- Check out Reggie Doke's album i.heard.Love:https://reggiedokes.bandcamp.com/album/i-heard-love-Support Black Lives Matter Detroit:https://www.blmdetroit.com/-Support Detroit Will Breathe:https://detroitwillbreathe.info/-Support Black Lives Matter:https://blacklivesmatter.com/-Be sure to check out Output, to make all your music-making and sound designing dreams come true!https://output.com/

In episode 5, Reggie, Jennifer, Kristian, Dave, and Eric Jackson, the production team behind the upcoming feature-length documentary God Said Give ‘Em Drum Machines: The Story of Detroit Techno, honor Black History Month with Detroit tastemaker, retailer, and promoter Zana Smith (Instagram: @Zana_SpecDet, Twitter: @MsZanaToYou, @SpectaclesDet). They discuss her contributions as one of the few female players of the early 80s: how she helped to cultivate the dance music scene at the Downstairs Pub and how she has impacted the story of GSGEDM. Her friend, legendary Detroit DJ Ken Collier, was right there with her at that time. His underground 80s mixtape will bring you through the episode, and back to the beginnings of the scene and its black roots in Detroit. For over two decades Reggie Dokes has been carving his own path in the world of underground house music. He rose quickly through the Detroit scene in the early 90s, being Derrick May's go-to support act and releasing records on his own Psychostasia imprint. Since then, he has racked up releases for labels like We Play House Recordings, Sistrum, and Prime Numbers. We celebrate his latest release for MATE's From Detroit To Madrid series with a mix dripping with soul. After that, we hear from Breaka. The UK artist broke through last year, with a stellar release on Desert Sound Colony’s Holding Hands Records that was battered by the likes of Call Super and Noncompliant. He is set to launch his own imprint later this month, including tracks almost custom-made for his workout focused party Stretchy Dance Supply. Get ready to sweat. *Intro* Reggie Dokes - Boogie Down [MATE] *Reggie Dokes* --No Tracklist-- *Breaka* --No Tracklist--
Designed by Pierre-Christophe Gam, “Sankara, The Upright Man” is a mix-media installation offering an apocryphal retelling of the life of Thomas Sankara, the late president of Burkina Faso. The work can be found here: https://www.pierre-christophe.com/the-upright-man Thomas Sankara was a military captain, a humanist, a pan-Africanist, an ecologist and a feminist who served as President of Burkina Faso from 1983, until his death in 1987, at 37 years old. A visionary and a charismatic figure, Sankara was a leading African voice for the global fight against imperialism and neo-colonialism, launching one of the most ambitious programs for social and economic justice ever attempted on the African continent. Informed by interviews with family members, classmates, Ministers, and peers, the work is a thoroughly-researched and deeply intimate expression of Sankara as a torch-bearer of Africa’s destiny towards self-determination. Always excited by creative deployment of the African archive, Decolonising The Archive caught up with Pierre-Christophe Gam to understand more about the motivations guiding the process of engaging the past to transform the present. Originally from Detroit, born and raised, this Atlanta transplant, has been a DJ since his youth. From backyard and basement parties as a youngster, to the small club scene of metro Detroit, Reggie Dokes eventually became a sought after DJ in Mo-Town. Fast forwarding to 2001 he created his label Psychostasia Recordings, which after a period of hibernation has been reinvigorated in 2017... Having released on heavyweight labels such as Clone, Transmat, Royal Oak and We Play House, Reggie's ear for a soulful flavour of US house is finely tuned. His mix here is no exception. Happy Friday folks...

INTERVIEW + TRACKLIST > http://inverted-audio.com/mix/rising-sun/ Rising Sun is the production alias of Steffen Laschinski, a producer and multiple record label curator from Berlin. Since discovering his music last year we've become enchanted by his productions and record label Kristofferson Kristofferson. In our interview Steffen discusses his musical heritage, from exploring electronic music after the Berlin wall fell to Basic Channel and sampling music. Steffen also discusses his various record labels and his affection for the 7" vinyl format. His mix features music from Galcher Lustwerk, Levon Vincent, Red Planet, Chez Damier, DJ QU, STL and Reggie Dokes.
The fifth installment of the vinyl-only Avenue Red Podcast series comes from Belgian vinyl-junkie, veteran DJ and label owner Bart Van Neste, better known to most people as Red D, whose stunning RA podcast released 2 years ago is still very fresh in our mind. He set up his We Play House imprint in 2008, initially to release the music of fellow Belgian @san-soda, who was at the time a relatively unknown young talent, and from there it has developed into a very successful house label, purveying some quality records from the likes of Reggie Dokes, Maxim Lany, Russ Gabriel, Dynamodyse, Raoul Lambert, James Teej and many more. This selection from Red D is very much a colourful mixture of varied house music, full of sweetly melodic moments, warm basslines, depth, soul and delicious beats 'n' grooves... exactly the kind of music that Avenue Red embraces.
