Today, on Karl and Crew, we kicked off the week with a LIVE in-studio audience as we discussed the importance of sharing the Gospel in a sincere and simple way. The Gospel is to be accessible by all, therefore we need to be intentional about the way we share it with others. We should share it in a way that all can understand. We turned to 2 Corinthians 11:3 where Paul expresses concern about believers being misled by false teachers simply because they don’t understand the simple and truthful gospel. How can you share the gospel in a way where it makes sense to everyone? We also had Pastor Jon Kelly share his testimony of how Jesus met him in solitary confinement. Pastor Kelly is a husband, father and Lead Pastor of Chicago West Bible Church. He also is an alum of Moody Bible Institute. We also had Dr. Joseph Stowell join us. Dr. Stowell is an international conference speaker, author, and former president of Moody Bible Institute. Recently, the Trump Administration has cut 90% of funding to USAID; the largest international aid organisation. This move has received wide condemnation regarding what this will mean for those reliant on the support provided through the initiative. Parliament passed a law requiring the Government to spend 0.7% of Gross National Income on international aid. So, should Ministers be able to bypass that legal obligation through a ministerial statement? We also discuss Labour MP Mike Amesbury's suspended jail sentence and how a recall petition will be called if he doesn't voluntarily step down. Plus, we explore the controversy surrounding the Product Safety and Metrology Bill, which Brexiteers warn could stealthily realign Britain with the EU while handing Ministers sweeping legislative powers.Should MPs have a say on the Government's decision to cut yet more from the UK's international aid budget to fund increased defence spending? By law, the UK is committed to spending 0.7% of Gross National Income (GNI) on international aid. Yet this latest reduction does not have to be put to a vote in Parliament. With aid spending now slashed to just 0.3% of GNI, could an upcoming Estimates Day debate on Foreign Office funding give MPs a chance to raise concerns about the decision? And with the aid budget shrinking, is it time to reconsider the role of the International Development Select Committee? Meanwhile, Labour MP Mike Amesbury has had his 10-week jail sentence for assault suspended on appeal — but that may not be enough to save his Commons seat. As Ruth explains, an MP sentenced to jail — even with a suspended sentence — faces a recall petition. If 10% of voters in Runcorn and Helsby back his removal, the Government will be forced into a by-election, unless he voluntarily resigns his seat first. Also in the spotlight: the Product Safety and Metrology Bill. Ministers are keen to reassure MPs about this seemingly technical legislation, but Brexiteers suspect it's a Trojan Horse for creeping EU alignment. The bill contains sweeping "Henry VIII powers," allowing ministers to rewrite laws with minimal parliamentary oversight. Ruth and Mark ponder why governments keep reaching for these controversial powers —and what it means for democracy.

International assistance and aid can help bring people out of poverty, build peace and security, and drive economic prosperity. For Canada, it's also a major source of its soft power globally. In fact, Global Affairs Canada delivers around $15 billion dollars a year in international assistance, of which approximately $6 billion is delivered through what is known in the federal government as “Grants and Contributions” to non-governmental agencies, charities, and other partners around the world. And while the amount and form of international aid given by Canada can sometimes be a divisive political topic and a difficult policy challenge, it's fair to say that everyone wants to see those international assistance dollars used as effectively as possible. So why are we talking about international aid and assistance on Let's Think Digital? There's a really interesting digital transformation project happening right now at Global Affairs Canada. This multi-year initiative, being undertaken in partnership with the public interest tech non-profit, Code for Canada, is hoping to transform how Global Affairs administers its Grants and Contributions programs. The goal is to completely modernize what have traditionally been outdated, siloed, manual processes, leading to more effective international assistance programs. It's a pretty interesting project that has aspects of many common challenges we see in government digital transformation. To tell us all about it, we spoke to Brandon Lee, Director General of the Grants and Contributions Transformation Initiative at Global Affairs Canada, and Dorothy Eng, CEO of Code for Canada and friend of the podcast. We spoke to them last November on site at the FWD50 Conference in Ottawa.Watch on YouTubehttps://youtu.be/J8R0zES1COE?si=lFMGqzMU99MQA7HqRelated LinksGlobal Affairs Canada Grants and Contributions Transformation InitiativeRisk Appetite Hackathon ReportCode for CanadaChapters00:00 Introduction02:01 Brandon Lee and Dorothy Eng03:37 Challenges in Grants and Contributions09:43 Code for Canada's Role in the Transformation15:37 Implementing Agile in Government23:36 Expected Outcomes and Success Metrics29:45 Digital Diplomacy and Broader Impacts32:43 Conclusion and Closing Remarks

Summary Nigeria's official population (~220-230 million) may be significantly inflated and could be closer to 170 million This overcount is likely driven by political and financial incentives for states I'm unsure of the implications if this is accurate If states have uniformly inflated populations than the distribution of resources could still be divided evenly Nigeria would still be the biggest country in Africa and companies/governments/NGOs would have similar cost benefit analysis for working and investing there This is a very shallow investigation Why did I bother looking into this? The below text sparked an investigation into Nigeria's population claims. It was slightly hidden in the 4th section in one of Yaw's excellent Substack posts. With Degan Ali I discuss the system of international aid based on her inside experience of working in the sector for over two decades. She speaks truth to power and that really takes some bravery to do, and I honor that. Degan Ali shares many compelling stories from her home country Somalia, but also from several years of growing up and studying in the US. She explains how local agricultural markets were destroyed by foreign interference and how the Somali government is at the whim of foreign donor countries, instead of being accountable to its own people. Listening to her perspective is really important and powerful, even though I don't agree with all her viewpoints. With her voice and her work she tries to find ways to liberate Somalia from the traditional aid paradigm. As it is pointless to wait for the international aid system to change or even to leave Somalia, what seems the most promising way forward is to empower local civil society organizations and to raise their political profile to increase their leverage on the political stage. Degan Ali has been at the forefront of shifting power for decades. She is the Executive Director of Adeso, an organization that made cash transfers a significant, legitimate method of delivering aid to vulnerable populations, beginning with the first large-scale cash transfer program during the 2011 Somalia famine. She is also a Rockefeller Foundation Global Fellow for Social Innovation, a contributor to the Overseas Development Institute, the Humanitarian Policy Group and the Global Food Security Journal. Nicky's inspiration to set up the charity came from her background as a Veterinary Nurse. She first established the UK charity in 2009 to be able to provide a better future for animals in need.  Since then, she and her team have done incredible work rescuing tens of thousands of cats and dogs across two continents. What began as a desire to help one stray dog in the rainforests of Borneo, has since expanded to helping over 30,000 dogs and cats who have needed veterinary support. Currently she is focusing on three core projects in Borneo, Penang Island and Romania, with a range of additional support programs worldwide. Nicky shares a glimpse of her life and lifelong passion of helping animals worldwide, along with her adventures around the world, from climbing the highest peaks and reaching Everest Base Camp, to travelling through the jungles of Borneo, to the forthcoming trip to Kilimanjaro and preparing for the vastness of the Sahara, all in the name of fundraising for her charity. A story that ignites human compassion and gives a rare look into the world of conservation and saving animals lives. Thank you to Ebenezer Norman and A New Dimension of Hope (https://ndhope.org/) for co-hosting this episode. IN THIS EPISODE: [01:18] Leymah discusses the success factors of her peace movement, highlighting the unity of the group and their shared ambition to end the war as key drivers. [04:41] The discussion shifts to the role of large donors like USAID and the UN, where Leymah criticizes the way funding is often channeled through middle or large humanitarian organizations instead of directly supporting grassroots organizations. [07:12] The episode concludes with information on how to support Leymah Gbowee's organization, the Gbowee Peace Foundation. KEY TAKEAWAYS:  The success of Leymah Gbowee's peace movement in Liberia was driven by the unity of the group, which transcended divisions and brought together people from various backgrounds, including different religious and political affiliations. Large international donors should direct more funding and support to grassroots organizations, especially those led by women, which often face challenges in accessing resources due to their lack of formal registration. Those interested in supporting Leymah Gbowee's organization can visit the Gbowee Peace Foundation's website or social media profiles to donate or learn more about their work. “We're all part of one family and one nation, which is the planet. The human condition is our family.” - Eddy Khawaja This is a special episode of Real Talk. As a Palestinian-American, I've been experiencing my own struggle with the pain, suffering, and horror happening in my family's ancestral homeland. It's been hard to go on with the day-to-day, knowing that children and civilians are being killed and terrorized as we look on. Many people are losing hope and faith. I turned to a fellow advocate for humanity.  I spoke with Eddy Khawaja, who was born and raised in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and has since lived all over the world. With a background in forensic chemistry and criminal justice, Eddy has worked for the United States Department of Homeland Security and is now a Chief Security Officer for an international aid organization in the Western Sahara. Eddy is also on a lifelong quest for spiritual enlightenment through studying religion, philosophy, and consciousness. Eddy and I had a raw conversation about humanity, life, and the meaning of it all. It was a healing, spiritual conversation about what we can do to help the world and how to center love, even in dire and catastrophic times.  In this deeply reflective and existential talk, we unpack: Separateness and oneness: Eddy debunks the myth of “us versus them” and the illusion of separation. We are all waves in the same ocean, as he says. We are all one. Love Frequency: Eddy explains that if you love something, you affirm its existence. The love frequency is the highest vibration and frequency we can hold. Tap into this vibration, especially when everything around us is dark. Injustice: Eddy talks about how even one person's suffering anywhere is unacceptable. We also talk about the lessons humanity can learn from the brave children of Gaza. Humanity: Eddy dives into empathy and the understanding that the Divine chose everyone on earth to be here. We are a timeless reflection of the Divine. Self-Love: It starts with us. Eddy tells us we must go within ourselves, get knowledge, connect with a higher source, and keep moving forward. Create and embody the energy and change that you want to see in the world.  Energy: Eddy explains how individual self-discovery and self-knowledge help elevate the collective energy. Our energy is powerful and can make changes in the world. Manifestation: Eddy discusses how we can move from despair by holding the vision of what we want the world to be. We are all Creators. Set a positive intention, meditate, and envision a best-case scenario. Trust that it's already happened. Aim for Heaven on Earth. Eddy encourages us not just to hope but to command what we want into existence through the Law of Resonance! We need love, light, and peace the most in times like these. I invite you to join us in holding that vision.  With so much love & gratitude, Grace
