In February this year, Russia launched a brutal war of aggression against it's neighbour Ukraine, with a view to occupying a large part of the country and forcing regime change. That initial aim has clearly failed, and now Putin is mired in a grinding war of attrition. In a wide-ranging interview with David DeBatto, we expore the lead up to the war, it's execution and potential end game. Putin's Russkiy Mir ideology was supposed to unite the Russian speaking world into a new post-Soviet empire, but instead has brought only theft, destruction, rape, deportations, torture, and murder to Ukraine. David DeBatto is a geopolitical analyst, writer, and podcaster. He is a retired U.S. Army Counterintelligence Special Agent and Iraq war veteran. He served as Team Leader of a Tactical Human Intelligence Team (THT) in operations within Iraq and is also a former police officer. David is considered too conservative for the progressive left and too independent minded for the radical right, which may suggest he is getting the balance about right? Either way, David is a controversialist of sorts, often irreverent, always passionate and seeks to challenge political dogma and the naked self-interest of certain politicians. He has strong pro-science and pro education credentials and condemns the encroachment on society of irrational, violent and dangerous conspiracy theories.

Chances are that you've heard about the political forces and players involved in the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine by Russia. But what may be less familiar is the complex, centuries-long religious and historical backdrop against which the war is unfolding.Joining us to help unpackage these dimensions of the conflict is Dr. Anatolii Babynskyi. Dr. Babynskyi is a research fellow at the Institute of Church History at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine. He is also the Ukrainian correspondent for the American online Catholic news service, The Pillar. Our conversation touches on numerous topics: the rich tapestry of ecclesiological and liturgical traditions that underpin the Christian character of Ukraine; the historical relationships and tensions between those traditions and Russian Orthodoxy; whether Ukrainian national identity is actually a thing; the leadership of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky; and the outlook for Ukraine's future amidst the fog of war.Documents/Websites referenced Dr. Anatolii Babynskyi (LinkedIn)@MrAnatoliusAnatolii Babynskyi, “‘Russkiy mir' - The ‘Russian World' meets Ukrainian politics and Vatican diplomacy”, The Pillar (March 3, 2022)Anatolii Babynskyi, “Split from Kirill is coming, say Ukrainian Orthodox priests”, The Pillar (March 9, 2022)Anatolii Babynskyi, “‘I have never seen such fear' - Ukraine's refugees, and the Catholics helping them survive”, The Pillar (March 24, 2022)Union of BrestEcumenical Council of FlorenceCaritas Internationaliswww.crownandcrozier.comtwitter.com/crownandcrozierfacebook.com/crownandcrozierhttps://www.instagram.com/crownandcrozier/Please note that this podcast has been edited for length and clarity.Support the show (http://missionoftheredeemer.com/crownandcrozier/)
On this edition of Parallax Views, investigative journalist Greg Palast returns to the program to detail the deep history of Vladimir Putin's rise to power involving Russian oligarchs, Boris Yeltsin, Bill Clinton, and former United States Secretary of Treasure Larry Summers among others. We also discuss how oil figures into the equation, how the U.S. cutting a deal with Venezuela could help deal a blow to Putin, Putin as the "Russian Pinochet", and U.S. "shock therapy" on Russia after the Cold War. In the second segment of the show, progressive radio host and New York Times bestselling author Thom Hartmann returns to the program to discuss his latest book The Hidden History of Big Brother. We begin by delving into the "pre-history" of Orwellian surveillance and police state-style tactics used by the powerful in America from the days of slavery in the agrarian South to the reign of J. Edgar Hoover's FBI in the 20th century. From there we pivot to the question of Big Tech in relation to the modern surveillance and also discuss the Patriot Act, Josh Hawley's The Tyranny of Big Tech, Cambridge Analytica, and much, much more! In the third segment of the show we welcome George Demacopoulos, a Professor of Theology/Fr. John Meyendorff & Patterson Family Chair of Orthodox Christian Studies at Fordham University and the co-director of the Orthodox Christian Studies Center, to tell us about how the Russki Mir (Russian World) teaching that is some powerful members of the Russian Orthodox Church are using to justify Putin's war in Ukraine. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow in particular has been a major embracer of the Russian World teaching. Others, however, including Prof. Demacopoulos, argue this teaching is heretical and have made their feelings on the matter known by signing "A DECLARATION ON THE “RUSSIAN WORLD” (RUSSKII MIR) TEACHING".
