Forest and Bird's annual Bird of the Year competition, Te Manu Rongo-nui o te Tau, is underway, with 71 candidates vying to be 2022's top bird. News & Editorial Director Jessica Hopkins spoke to Ellen Rykers from Forest and Bird about why Bird of the Year is so important for raising awareness about Aotearoa's diverse bird species, 80% of which are facing extinction. And to help you make your decision, Jessica spoke to several campaign managers about why their bird should get your vote, and why Bird of the Year is important to them.
A key player has bowed out of the running for Bird of the Year. Voting opens today for the annual competition, aiming to raise awareness of our native birds. But two-time winner the Kakapo is not part of the 2022 competition. Neither is the controversial 2021 winner the Pekapeka, or the Long Tailed Bat running this year either. Forest and Bird's Ellen Rykers says it's important to give other contenders a shot. "I guess it comes back to the ultimate purpose of Bird of the Year, and that's to raise awareness for all of our awesome native species. And we want to keep it fresh and interesting, so it'd be nice to share the spotlight that Kakapo enjoy so much with some of our other amazing birds." If your name ends in a vowel, it’s time to throw in the towel, and tune to the podcast, at least for an hour. Gather round and let’s listen to curse words galore. If you don’t notice Biden’s a FAKE POTUS then your mother’s a whore! Welcome to this week’s episode of My City, My Scene. Today we travel to the tiny town of Spangenberg, Germany to speak with punk rocker, and one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, Armin Evildiver. Armin’s hometown, which he’ll tell you more about later, is a tiny, quaint and somewhat hidden town in the middle of Germany. When I tell other Germans about my travels there, few of them have actually ever heard of it. The people there though, are welcoming and hospitable. While I would eventually visit Armin here, the first time I met him was in the middle of The Bermuda Triangle aboard Flogging Molly’s Salty Dog Cruise, in 2016. We talk to Armin about folk punk, German hardcore and what he really thinks of Miami Beach. This episode features Die Schnitter and Rykers from Germany and Strung Out from the United States.

Ryker Hall is a local singer songwriter and over the last year you may have seen him play at open mic's and songwriter showcases. He recorded a 4 song EP in Denton with a little help from friends in Denton bands. Soon you'll be a Skeleton is a really fun listen. With 4 songs and just under 12 minutes its a great way to start your day or add to a mix. The sound is part emo/post punk mixed with Americana if you had to classify it. The first song is Placeholder. It opens up the show and the EP. We ask Ryker about the album, the players and recording. We also learn about Rykers amazing ability to beat box and desire to sing in a hop hop song or possibly do some rhyming. He has a mix tape out there somewhere and a song with Juma that may be released soon. We also learned what it's like to be a radio DJ. Ryker was cool. Super fun and really interesting. The middle song we play is The Season. The second half we have no emails or Zach Libs but we do have more questions. "The whole show is questions!"- Joe Tacke The second half questions are more fun and random in nature and involves the whole room. The last song on the Ep and the song we close with is Roll Credits, Fade to Black. Listen to the end. There may or may not be an easter egg from Joe. Find the EP anywhere you get your digital music. Itunes, Spotify, Bandcamp ect. Thanks for listening! Check out our friends #suckitstubbs The Jerry Jonestown Massacre The Jenny Janestown Mascara Arlington Distorted Bombaarded
