De Clarke/Cortes Currents - There has been a flurry of media stories about the dangers of eating raw oysters lately, but Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) confirmed that there have been no problems with Cortes Island grown oysters. (And there have been no problems anywhere with cooked oysters.) Only one of the 8 emergency closures DF0 listed, in response to Cortes Currents request, is in the Discovery Islands. A DFO notice from December 23 states, “The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has received reports of illness linked to BC Aquaculture Tenure Landfile #1402974” in the Bold Island-Crescent Channel area between Quadra and Read Islands. The other 7 oyster closures pertained to 42 ‘Landfiles' in the Baynes Sound area across from Denman Island. Mo Qutob, Communications Advisor with Fisheries & Oceans Canada, emailed that all of the closures he listed were in force as of December 31, 2024. “The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has received illness reports linked to aquaculture tenures in British Columbia and has recommended emergency closures for certain aquaculture tenures within Pacific Fisheries Management Areas 13 and 14.” The Crescent Channel tenure mentioned above is in Management Area 13 (Subarea 13-12), and the Baynes Sound closures were in Management Area 14 (Subareas 14-8 and 14-15). Two of the Landfiles mentioned In DF0's December 19, 2024, closure notice (#1402293, #1413888), were also in US reports about people being infected with Norovirus after eating ‘raw oysters from British Columbia.' The associated DFO notice mentions ‘multiple reports of illness' and lists closures to 13 Landfiles in the Baynes Sound area. A second closure notice, issued the same day, lists closures to another 18 Landfiles in the Baynes Sound area. An extensive list of these and subsequent closure notices is at the bottom of this page. Qutob: “The Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program (CSSP) is a federal food safety program jointly administered by the CFIA, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and DFO. The goal of the program is to minimize the health risks associated with the consumption of contaminated bivalve molluscan shellfish such as mussels, oysters and clams.” “As partners in the CSSP, CFIA conducts testing for biotoxins and ECCC conducts water quality sampling. DFO's role as partner in the CSSP is to enact fishery openings and closures based on recommendations from CFIA and ECCC. Please reach out to those agencies for specific information concerning biotoxins and water quality sampling.” “DFO's mandate under the CSSP is to manage shellfish harvest (e.g., to close and open areas, patrol closures) and provide support to illness investigations.”

Kate Hawkesby: The Teaching Council wrote to me, but why are they wasting their time doing that?

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 22, 2022 3:05

A couple of weeks ago I told you guys the story of the relief teacher censured and embroiled in court action, over removing an ear bud from a Year 10 student's ear because he refused to remove it himself, and the teacher had asked him to stop listening to music and pay attention. The student had been verbally abusive and refused to oblige and this relief teacher had had a gutsful. I pointed out that despite crying out for teachers, and not being able to get a relief teacher these days for love nor money, the Teachers' Complaints Committee and the Teachers' Disciplinary Tribunal had over reacted in siding with the student. I argued that, in my opinion, it fed a growing issue with a sense of entitlement among young people in classrooms, which in turn fed into disrespect of teachers, and that this guy being told his actions could ‘adversely affect their wellbeing' was basically over the top. Many of you agreed with me at the time. But the next day my producer received an email from the Media and Communications Advisor at the Teachers Council. He wanted to ‘share a statement' with me from the chief exec of the Teaching Council as they felt there was  “a lot of misunderstanding about the Teaching Council's roles and functions”.. they ‘hoped I would find the enclosed letter informative and share it with my audience'. Attached to the email was a two page typed up letter on Teaching Council letterhead, signed by a Lesley Hoskin, Teaching Council Chief Executive. Kia Ora Alexander, Tena Koe Kate, it began. FYI If you want to know more about who this woman is, and why teaching is where it is these days, be sure to listen back to NewstalkZB on demand on the ZB website if you didn't hear her interview with Mike yesterday on his show. It explains a lot about why we are where we are with the education system. I was surprised the Teaching Council was tuning in to Early Edition, I'm not so sure they were, I wouldn't be surprised if they have a google alert set up, but to dedicate time to typing up a two page letter to me, then having your media guy attach a covering letter and send that to my producer.. I mean really?  You don't have better stuff to do with your time when our education system is in the state it's in? It may not surprise many of you that the Teaching Council is anecdotally apparently not held in very high regard by the teaching body itself. That was reaffirmed yesterday by teachers who texted in after Mike's interview. That doesn't surprise me given the Teaching Council appears to be working against teachers, not for them. Having heard yesterday's interview it's almost like they're working against themselves too. We have record low literacy and numeracy rates, a teacher shortage, and these guys are hitting own goals by running teachers out of the profession for removing headphones from students, and now looking to make Te Reo competency mandatory, to retain your teaching certificate. Anyway the upshot of the letter I received was that the Teaching Council defended its decision over this relief teacher, and like all left leaning ideological bodies, they were just wanting to ‘educate me'.. the great unwashed, on how to think more like them I guess? This approach, this time wasting of typing up letters to radio hosts when you have way bigger fish to fry, sums up everything that's wrong with where teaching's heading.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kate Cranney is a science communicator, scientist and visual artist. She combines these skills in her role as a Communications Advisor with CSIRO, Australia's national science agency. Kate's background is diverse. She's climbed trees in Borneo, scaled volcanoes in Papua New Guinea, pulled snakes out of traps in the Simpson Desert, and counted turtle hatchlings in Solomon Islands … all in the name of science. In a surprise turn of events, the conservative government announced that the minimum wage in Ontario will be rising to $15 an hour come January. This policy would potentially give liquor servers a historic 19.5% wage increase and yet it comes 3 years after  it was first proposed by the liberal party. Is it too little too late?  In this episode, we discuss the new minimum wage with Craig PickThorne of the Living Wage Network of Ontario,  Julie Kwiecinski of the Canadian Federation for Independent Businesses, and Dr. Darius Ornston of the Munk School of Global Affairs, to understand how this increase will impact workers and businesses while evaluating why this raise may look important to some and underwhelming to others.  Guests:  Craig Pickthorne is the Communications Coordinator at the Ontario Living Wage Network. He is one of two staff at the OLWN, and is responsible for maintaining the website, database, and social media accounts. Craig also works with dozens of local organizers across Ontario to field media inquiries and government deputations. He has a background in live event production and digital media creation, and enjoys putting those skills to work in his current role within the living wage movement.  Julie Kweicinski is the  CFIB's Director of Provincial Affairs for Ontario. She focuses on determining the organization's Ontario legislative and communications strategies and priorities, including CFIB's Ontario COVID-19 strategy, based on member feedback. Kweicinski has worked for Ontario's recycling regulator as Communications Advisor, and for the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police as Events Manager and Communications & Government Relations Advisor. She served as Communications Director and Senior Legislative Advisor to the Leader of the Official Opposition. In government, she worked in the Premier's Office and served two Cabinet Ministers as Communications Advisor.  Dr. Darius Ornston is an Associate Professor at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto, where he specializes in the politics of cooperation and change. An expert in Nordic innovation policy, Dr. Ornston has also written two books, When Small States Make Big Leaps and Good Governance Gone Bad. TORCH | The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities

OYUB is a Russian documentary play about the life of Oyub Titiev, a human rights activist in the Republic of Chechnya, Russia. ‘How much longer are we going to kill and imprison human rights defenders?’ ‘With every passing year, there are more and more restrictions, and less and less rights.’ Oyub Titiev, Shali Town Court, Chechnya, Russia, 18 March 2019. Oyub Titiev's arrest and subsequent show trial in Chechnya in 2018-19 caught worldwide media attention and drew broad international criticism. Titiev was sentenced to four years imprisonment, but was released on parole three months later, having served out two years in detention since his initial arrest. In 2018, Oyub Titiev was awarded the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize. He now lives in Moscow, where he continues his human rights work. This radio play is read by current human rights activists, not actors (although one of the participants is both). It was recorded by the participants from their homes in the U.K. and Europe during the COVID-19 lockdown. The play was not rehearsed or directed, and is performed as a reading, rather than acted out. Emphasis is placed on the professional connection between participants and Titiev himself, and for this reason their biographies are included below. The play features an introduction by Julie Curtis, who is a Professor of Russian Literature at the University of Oxford. Her work on contemporary Russian drama has been pursued in association with two AHRC (OWRI) research projects hosted by the Universities of Oxford (Creative Multilingualism) and Manchester (Cross-Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community). She is the editor of a volume of essays and interviews on this subject called New Drama in Russian: Performance, Politics and Protest in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus (London: Bloomsbury Academic, 2020), to which the translator of the play, Alex Trustrum Thomas, is a contributor. The play text of OYUB is published by Bookmate Originals and is available as a free e-book in English and in Russian. This is part of a forthcoming anthology of Russian documentary plays being published later this year by Common Place (Moscow). This project was supported by Creative Multilingualism, as part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Open World Research Initiative (OWRI). N.B. Headphones are highly recommended for playback to hear the full range of sounds. Participant biographies, in order of appearance: Peter Wieltschnig is a human rights lawyer, focusing on human security in crisis and conflict as well as the right to water. He has worked on projects including: the protection and empowerment of refugees and displaced persons in Lebanon and Syria, the development of due diligence legislation to regulate the arms industry and States’ arms export regimes, the criminalisation of humanitarian assistance in Europe, and the human rights impacts of counter-terrorism legislation in Ireland and the UK. Jacob Burns is a writer, researcher and journalist who has worked across the Middle East. Currently the Communications Advisor for Yemen, Iraq and Jordan at Médecins sans Frontières, he has previously worked for Amnesty International and Forensic Architecture. Mistale Taylor conducts research into various areas of international criminal law and human rights law to provide pro bono legal advice for states, governments and NGOs in conflict/post-conflict situations in her role as Counsel at Public International Law and Policy Group. She has advised on, amongst other things, maritime piracy; the invocation of state secrets privilege to bar third party access to information in torture cases; and life sentencing practices in Europe. In her work at Trilateral Research, Mistale contributes to ongoing projects related to law, technology, privacy, data protection, human rights and ethics. Sorcha Thomson is a PhD Fellow at the University of Roskilde, Denmark, researching anticolonial struggle, internationalist solidarity and revolutionary movements in Cuba and Palestine. She is a member of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign Youth and Student Committee, working to build and organise the next generation of support for Palestinian human rights and justice in the UK. She has worked with Amnesty International in Israel, Palestine and Scotland across a number of campaigns. Rea Eldem lives in Berlin where she works as a gender equality strategist with a focus on working culture under the name in-visible. To her, addressing gender equality in the workplace means making visible normalised cultural practices, institutionalised dynamics and organisational structures that hinder women and other marginalised groups to strive forward. Although equal treatment and access to opportunities are basic human rights the discrimination of individuals based on aspects of their identity continues to persist in the workplace today. Through his first term, President Trump has withdrawn our country from the Paris Climate Agreement, accelerated oil and gas drilling offshore and on public lands, tried to revive coal mining and power production, and slammed wind and solar energy as unreliable. Meanwhile, Democratic Party presidential candidates are competing to be the environmental contender in 2020. That includes more than a half-dozen who have already expressed support for the Green New Deal, the massive reform initiative that calls for a “10-year national mobilization” to transition the country to a 100-percent renewable-energy, zero-emissions economy. This plenary will bring together politicians and campaign advisors to discuss the Green New Deal and what national environmental policy will look like beyond 2020, under either a Republican or Democratic president.

Joanne Kelleher studied at the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and in her Master's degree study she asked 37 Maritime Professionals what they want from their industry leaders and got some interesting results. Joanne shared her insights in an article on LinkedIn, which I found very interesting, so I decided to try and meet Joanne for an interview and she agreed and that is what we speak about in this episode, the 104th.  Do we have the leaders we deserve in the maritime industry? Traditionally, there has been an authoritarian leadership with clear commands, there is only one Captain on the ship! Is that changing? What kind of leaders does the #nextgen of shipping people want from a leader? How can the industry meet the requirements of the young generation? Is there a new leadership on the horizon?  Joanne and I really get into the nitty-gritty of leadership, diversity, WISTA, female leaders, participatory leadership and being a leader in different cultures. I would really like to start a discussion on this topic. What is your view?  In addition, what do you think of the new logotype and the new artwork? After 100 episodes it was time for an update. New & fresh, I would say.  Thank you for listening. Should you wish to support my job, please visit www.patreon.com/ShippingPodcast
