A couple of weeks ago our Kiwi Trust (Save the Kiwi) visited Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari (Waikato) – not just for a board meeting, but to see how a modern-day “muster” and translocation looks these days. It reminded me of a restoration exercise in a huge garden! Imagine having a sizeable territory of pretty cool forest, surrounded by a predator-proof fence. We're talking about 3400 Hectares of safe habitat for all sorts of New Zealand Native/endemic species from a couple of Kakapo to Takahe, stitchbird and saddleback as well as noisy kaka. And oh yes, there are more than 2000 North Island (Western) Brown Kiwi thriving in there as well. Thriving is the operative word. It certainly didn't always go that well in the past: the decline of North Island Brown Kiwi was about 2% per year, which triggered the then Prime Minister John Key suggest we should have a go at turning -2% into +2%. John MacLennan (Scientist and Trustee of Save the Kiwi) came up with the concept of Kohanga Kiwi. Imagine allowing a heap of kiwi to “do their thing” in such a forest and use that “Kohanga Kiwi” as a Nursery from which we can “harvest” plenty of birds to translocate to predator-controlled areas elsewhere – Capital Kiwi (Wellington), Tongariro Forest, Taranaki Mounga. Last year 222 birds were shifted to new and safe habitats in the North Island. This year it looks like there will be even more travellers in the Kohanga Kaupapa! Birds are caught during the day and at night with highly trained, muzzled kiwi dogs. The birds are tagged by bands or transponders, weighed and health-checked, before kept in a smaller forest enclosure. A day or so later, the birds are transported to their final destination: a forest that is protected from predators. The cool thing is that this Maungatautari Muster is taking place in the forest and in the local Pukeatua Primary school (Handy to have a spare classroom to assist in the kaupapa!). The kids follow what's happening with the Scientists and volunteers who catch the birds. They record the sizes, the weights, the age, and whether the birds are male or female. They also observe the health checks and note everything down on their own observation sheets. My goodness! I wish I was at such a primary school when I grew up, learning about the operations Manual of the Planet and how to restore our Ecological systems. HQ of Maungatautari Muster 2025 Kiwi out of forest and back to school Kiwi health check. Photo / Kim McGuire and the Maungatautari team This photo is a really good example of female vs male. Gaia (left) is holding a sub adult female and Steven (right) a sub adult male. Both weigh just a little over 1.8kg, and yet you can see they carry that weight differently. The female has a longer body, flatter head, larger feet and curved bill. The male is a smaller bird, has a rounded head and much shorter body and smaller feet. A security review is underway after a series of brazen breakouts from a Waikato wildlife sanctuary. In the past two months three Kakapo have gone over the wire at Sanctuary Mountain, Maungatautari, near Pukeatua. The famously curious parrots apparently making short work of the 47 kilometre pest proof fence. Repeat offender, Motupohue, and two other Kakapo have been transferred to another protected area for their own safety. This week we learn about two interesting animals from opposite parts of the world! Thanks to Felix and Jaxon for suggesting the wolverine and the kakapo. Further reading: Study: Wolverines need refrigerators Kakapo Comeback [this article has some fantastic pictures!] The wolverine likes cold weather: So many young kakapos! The kakapo is a really big bird: (Photo by Matu Booth) Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to cover two animals suggested by listeners who spell their names with an X. I had already picked out these topics from the list and just now noticed both suggesters have X's in their names. Thanks to Jaxon and Felix for these suggestions! First, Felix suggested we learn about the wolverine. We've talked about it before in episode 62, but there's a whole lot more to learn about this uncommon animal. The wolverine is a mustelid, which is a family that includes weasels, ferrets, and other small, long, skinny animals with short legs. But the wolverine is big and broad, although its legs are pretty short. It kind of looks like a small bear and stands about 18 inches tall at the shoulder, or 45 cm. It's light brown with darker brown or black legs, muzzle, tail, and back, and some have silvery-gray markings too. Its tail is short but fluffy. It lives in cold, mountainous areas, including northern Canada and Alaska, Siberia, and parts of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The wolverine is mainly a scavenger of animals that are already dead, but it will also kill and eat pretty much anything it can catch. This includes rabbits, mice, rats, porcupines, geese, and other small or relatively small animals, but it sometimes kills animals a lot bigger than it is, like deer. It will also eat eggs, berries, seeds, and anything else it can find. It's not a picky eater. The wolverine nearly went extinct in the 19th century due to overhunting for its fur, which is mostly waterproof and frost-proof. People used it to line winter clothes. The wolverine is also vulnerable to habitat loss and climate change, since it needs deep snow and cold temperatures to survive. Because the wolverine lives where winters are harsh, when it finds a lot of food, it will sometimes bury it in snow to eat later. It chooses a protected area between boulders or a natural crevice in rocks to put the dead animal, then covers it with deep snow to keep it fresh for longer, just like putting meat in a freezer. Females in particular need this stored food, because they give birth in winter and need lots of food so they can produce milk for their babies. But if you've ever taken food out of the freezer, you know it's hard as a rock. How does the wolverine eat meat that's frozen solid? Not only does the wolverine have strong jaws and teeth, it actually has a special tooth in the back of the mouth that points inward, one on each side of the upper jaw. The inward-pointing tooth allows the wolverine to tear off chunks of frozen meat more easily. Other mustelids have this arrangement of teeth too. A male wolverine roams widely through a large territory, which can sometimes be hundreds of square miles. Pairs often mate for life although they don't spend a lot of time together, and sometimes a male will have two or three mates. In winter, the female digs a den deep into the snow to have her babies, and while she mostly takes care of them by herself, the father wolverine will visit from time to time and bring everyone food. The babies stay with their mother for up to a year, and sometimes the half-grown wolverines will go traveling with their dad for a while. The wolverine is sometimes called the nasty cat because it has a strong smell, which it uses to mark its territory. “Nasty cat” is the funniest name for an animal I've ever heard. Next, Jaxon suggested the kakapo, which is a weird and adorable bird. It's flightless and nocturnal, lives only in New Zealand,
The Trivers-Willard hypothesis says that males will be born when more resources are available. This hypothesis played out in New Zealand almost driving the Kakapo closer to extinction when wildlife officials provided more food. The offspring that were produced, were 70% males. Are we ignoring some of our most critically endangered species because they're not cute and charismatic enough? While native birds like the Kakapo and Kiwi get the lionshare of public attention and conservation money may endemic plants, fungi, marine invertebrates and algae are on the brink of extinction. Biologist Sophie Fern has recently finished a thesis which looks at the role charisma plays in conservation priorities. She talks to Kathryn about why New Zealand's conservation effort needs to be more equitable or else risks pushing those less glamourous species to the brink of extinction. [audio_play]
Today on The Huddle- we have Nick Leggett, Chief Executive of Transporting NZ and Ali Jones, senior consultant at Red PR talking about the following: Sophie Carey, the nurse who moved from Australia to New Zealand for a better life. And house prices, since she went to the West Coast. She's bucking the trend! This Shakespeare funding is quite the talker- the Shakespeare Globe Centre who are no longer receiving the funding certainly can't believe it. We're in the midst of an aged care crisis - yet Ryman is having to downsize its hospital care due to what it says is a lack of state funding? How worrying is the future for New Zealand's ageing population? Maybe Wayne Brown is onto something... 50 middle managers at Eke Panuku earn an average of 143k a year. Are you fine with that? Bird of the Year voting has begun! It's always a chaotic time. This year the Kakapo is excluded because it does too well, which is honestly ridiculous. Who's got your vote? All of these topics will be discussed here today on The Huddle! LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A key player has bowed out of the running for Bird of the Year. Voting opens today for the annual competition, aiming to raise awareness of our native birds. But two-time winner the Kakapo is not part of the 2022 competition. Neither is the controversial 2021 winner the Pekapeka, or the Long Tailed Bat running this year either. Forest and Bird's Ellen Rykers says it's important to give other contenders a shot. "I guess it comes back to the ultimate purpose of Bird of the Year, and that's to raise awareness for all of our awesome native species. And we want to keep it fresh and interesting, so it'd be nice to share the spotlight that Kakapo enjoy so much with some of our other amazing birds." Heat waves across Europe have resulted in droughts and drying rivers. Also on the programme, South Africa gang rape charges; and the world's biggest parrots, the Kakapo, have been saved from the brink of extinction. (Picture: The Loire Valley in France. Credit:Thierij)
Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
What do you think is the rarest bird in New Zealand? Perhaps, you immediately think of the Kakapo? But the title probably belongs to a seabird, or a little-known shorebird, the Southern Dotterel (or the Southern Red-breasted Plover) (Chadrius obscurus), which has been described as a distinct species and listed as such on the IUCN Red LIst. It is listed as Critically Endangered and the population trend is indicated as Decreasing. Last assessed in 2017, the IUCN estimates that the population is between 60 and 80 individuals, which is limited to one population, which occurs (fortunately) within the boundaries of the Rakiura National Park, on Rakiura (or Stewart Island), off the southern tip of the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand. Alasdair Burns spoke with Grant, from Stewart Island (Rakiura) about the Southern Dotterel, and recounted his work previously with the species, and explained why the specialisation of the species, and it's limited range makes it extremely vulnearable, especially to feral predators, such as cats, rats, mice and possums.
