This week's episode I am in County Kerry on the first week of my road trip around Ireland. I met up with Currane boatman Neil O'Shea where we had a day afloat on this majestic water. We were in search of Sea Trout and Salmon, unfortunately fishing was tough and only caught a few trout. Fishing with Neil was a great experience as we fished salmon holding marks and fished a method seldom fished today. Holding on marks while fishing the current similar to that of a river. I talk also of the surrounding history of Kerry. It's true to say that Currane is not the lake it used to be, but great fishing can still be had. It is no secret that the offshore salmon farms has affected the fishing at Currane. Please help get this water get back to it's halcyon days and stop buying toxic farmed salmon.
This week we're joined by the prolific angling writer, Chris McCully. Chris has been a regular contributor to Trout & Salmon magazine and in his spare time has written not just on fishing, but also English academic works as well as poetry. In Ireland though he's probably best known for 'Nomads of the Tides: Fishing for Irish Sea Trout', which he wrote with Ken Whelan back in 2013 and it's still a hugely respected and definitive book on sea trout fishing around Ireland. We've plenty to talk to Chris about for this book club episode, including his recent memoir, 'The River of All Goodbyes', and one that got our interest, 'Names of the Fish - In British & Irish Freshwaters'. Did you know, for example, that there are over seventy different words for sea trout with plenty of Irish versions as well. We talk about the work that went into producing it.To watch this film just click HERE
We hear plenty of stories of sea trout on the west coast of Ireland, but what about sea trout in the salt on the east coast where the fish are bigger, and if recent catches are anything to go by, fish numbers are improving as well? Mick McShane is a well known fly angler from Dundalk who will throw a fly at pretty much anything that swims, but he has a special grá for the sea trout around Carlingford Lough and he joins us on this week's episode to explain the rise in popularity of fly fishing for sea trout in the salt – inspired in no small part by the Danes. Last year we covered the impact of salmon farming on the famous Loch Maree in Scotland, but what about its impact on the wild salmon and sea trout here in Ireland and just why is the government looking to help the industry develop further in the face of its damaging ecological effects? For this week's episode we're joined by John Murphy from Salmon Watch Ireland, to tell us more about the work the organisation does as well as some recent cases they have been fighting.Rate, review and follow the show to keep up to date with all the latest Ireland on the Fly episodes on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. While we may be still a few weeks off the summer runs of salmon and sea trout, in advance of that, we thought it would be worth finding out more about catching sea trout on the fly in both daytime and night time conditions from one of the leading experts, Steffan Jones. Steffan is based in Wales but has fished for – and caught – big numbers of sea trout all over the world and he has some great insights and tips on the set-up, tactics and flies for catching the elusive white trout. A friend says he's heading to Patagonia to fish for sea trout and there is a spare spot. Would I like to come?I am sure you can guess the answer and I found myself standing on the banks of the Rio Gallegos. This podcast is of course about the sea trout but it is a whole lot more. I discover a lot about the people, the area and myself as an angler too.It was a life changing trip for me and even if you never intend visiting, I promise you will enjoy this episode
A recurring theme of some of our podcasts recently has been looking at the disastrous effects fish farming has had on wild salmon and sea trout and we have been examining Scotland in particular as a case study where the politicians have – just like Ireland – pursued a policy of increasing fish farming whilst blithely ignoring the accepted scientific evidence about the dangers to wild salmon and sea trout. And so, for this week's episode we're speaking to Wild Fish's Rachel Mulrenan, who is the Deputy Director, Scotland, for the wild fish conservation group. Rachel gives us some really interesting insights into the rise of intensive fish farming in Scotland and why isolated and disparate local communities on the west coast were the ones initially targeted. We also discuss the closing of one fish farm at Loch Ewe and what that really means and why, despite politicians backing the science around climate change, when it comes to fish farming, they still choose to bury their heads in the sand…..Rate, review and follow the show to keep up to date with all the latest Ireland on the Fly episodes on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. The mid-summer St Johns Eve celebrations at the end of June signalled the traditional start of the sea trout run in Ireland and if you've read Kingsmill Moore's A Man May Fish you'll get some idea of just how magical and plentiful the sea trout fishing in Connemara once was. So for this latest episode of Ireland on the Fly, we wanted to find out more about that time, what made it so special and just why it all collapsed so dramatically in the late 1980s and we spoke to Joe Creane, a lifelong Connemara fly fisherman who is now a guide on Lough Inagh. Chris Bush has a lot of experience wade fishing flats in Texas, especially for giant speckled trout. In this episode Chris goes over what gear you'll need, especially in colder conditions. He also goes over some advantages of being on foot over a skiff. Things like feeling the temperature changes, feeling the texture of the bottom on your feet, and more. You are able to really understand the water and the tides when you are in the water. If you have a larger group of people, you are also able to spread out and try some different depths and techniques instead of being confined to the same area in a boat.
