This week we reach back into the archive for our first visit from Dr. Mary Hicks to talk about the brilliance of Master and Commander and to talk with Mary about her research into African Mariners in the South Atlantic. About our guest:Mary Hicks is a historian of the Black Atlantic, with a focus on transnational histories of race, slavery, capitalism, migration and the making of the early modern world. Her first book, Captive Cosmopolitans: Black Mariners and the World of South Atlantic Slavery, 1721-1835, reimagines the history of Portuguese exploration, colonization and oceanic commerce from the perspective of enslaved and freed black seamen laboring in the transatlantic slave trade. As the Atlantic world's first subaltern cosmopolitans, black mariners, she argues, were integral in forging a unique commercial culture that linked the politics, economies and people of Salvador da Bahia with those of the Bight of Benin.
Can't wait for the muppet remake of this one
Send us a textWelcome aboard, hoist the mainsail, and batten down the hatches for this week's film, “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany (and a bunch of other dudes.). This movie happens to be one of Rachael's all-time favorites and she is sure to remind you of this. Frequently. We also discuss a recent visit to America's oldest (and best) national park, Yellowstone, as well as what life on the high seas might have been like in the early 19th century. So come join us for some light discussion on super-volcanoes and amputations! And of course, try to answer the thematic question; could I survive?

All July is movies at war, a theme we're calling “GLORY & PROPAGANDA”. War films are movie genre that draws another specific sub-class of film that can also cross over with westerns. We're talking about what we like to call “DAD BONER MOVIES”. I guess you could say “Dad Flicks” if you don't want to be crude but what's the fun in that? Think about your dad for a moment. Think about the movies he likes. The books and shows he like. Now picture your dad with a boner. It's a lot easier than you think, isn't it? Peter Weir's adaptation of Patrick O'Brian's Napoleonic War era nautical stories seemed to come and go rather quietly. With Russell Crowe at the lead it made a few bucks but didn't inspire any sequels. “MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD” nevertheless found critical acclaim and a particular appreciation for the movie developing in hindsight from all the dads and their boners. They love this shit. Perhaps one of the all timer, underrated, more modern Dad Boner films and also kinda gay with Crowe and Paul Bettany looking absolutely wifed. That's just that high seas shit. Peace and love to all the gay dad boners out there. Oh, shit! November and Riley read the first in Patrick O'Brian's Aubery-Maturin series, and what follows is just under an hour of November and Riley loudly loving the first novel in Patrick O'Brian's Aubery-Maturin series for its painterly writing, obsession with mundane-seeming detail, and disdain for swashbuckling tales of derring-do... among other things! We ran into a bit of a roadblock with the episode we originally planned to release this month, so we've decided to pivot. Russell Crowe returning to the historical epic genre at the peak of his post-Gladiator fame would seem a sure bet in 2003, and yet Peter Weir's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World met with a tepid box office response upon its maiden voyage. Despite being an exquisitely crafted adaptation of the beloved Patrick O'Brian novels and garnering several Oscars, the film failed to launch the hoped for franchise — though appreciation has grown for it over the years, particularly with millennials. Join Sebastian and Andrew as they hoist up the top sails and celebrate this high water mark of seafaring historical cinema.
NAVAL WEEK concludes with a highly acclaimed period seafaring adventure which just turned 20!Adapted from a series of beloved historical fiction novels from Patrick O'Brian, this film chronicles the journey of the HMS Surprise, a British seafaring vessel sailing across the Southern Hemisphere and in a continuous cat-and-mouse with the French Navy, this being during the height of the Napoleonic Wars in the 1800's. This ship and crew are lead by Captain Jack Aubrey played by Russell Crowe and the physician on board (and Aubrey's best friend) is Dr. Stephen Maturin played by Paul Bettany. We watch them embark on a series of adventures through choppy waters, blistering heat, conflict amongst the crew, and a continuous cat-and-mouse with a more intimidating French vessel known as the Acheron. Along the way, we get to know Jack, Stephen, and the rest of their spirited crew very well with every aspect of this story and setting being portrayed with an impressive level of historical authenticity thanks to director Peter Weir. This film received ten Oscar nominations including Best Picture, though it ended up losing most of them to the Lord of the Rings; Return of the King awards juggernaut that same year. So let's set sail and see if the weather gage....and Surprise....are on our side! ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
3/3. After a meteoric rise to fame, Cochrane finds himself in front of a court and stripped of his titles for fraud on the London Stock Exchange. Known for his ingenuity and schemes, Cochrane breaks out of prison before embarking on the adventure of a lifetime in South America. He's put in charge of the Chilean and then Brazilian navies, helping these mighty countries break free from Spain and establish their independence. But Cochrane wasn't just doing it out of a sense of justice, he charged a high fee for his services and ensured to pillage what he could along the way. In the final episode of the series, Dan recounts the later years of Cochrane's extraordinary life and how, even in his 70s, he was regarded as a liability by the Admiralty. Dan tells a story as dramatic, unlikely and exciting as any ever penned by an author about one of Britain's greatest sailors. Thomas Lord Cochrane was a naval commander with an illustrious career in the Napoleonic Wars who once strapped himself to a floating bomb, in a rising storm, in the dead of a moonless night to take out a French fleet. Another time, he convinced an enemy force to surrender to a navy that didn't exist. Napoleon dubbed him 'The Sea Wolf'.In part 1 of this 3-part series, Dan delves into Cochrane's early life and career starting out as a young man discovering a penchant for the sea, adventure and war.The whole series is available now for paying subscribers- you can sign up for the Apple app or at the link below. The rest of the series will be available for all listeners from Monday 8th January.Written by Dan Snow, produced by Mariana Des Forges, edited by Joseph Knight and sound designed & mixed by Dougal Patmore.Discover the past with exclusive history documentaries and ad-free podcasts presented by world-renowned historians from History Hit. Ahoy hoy, shuffleheads! Today Remember Shuffle takes a look and 2003's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, the first entry in the best franchise that never was. To help us analyze this film, we are joined by Everett Rummage of the Age of Napoleon podcast. We discuss the uniqueness and out-of-place nature the film in the decade, how this film runs on vibes, the historical authenticity of the film, and why its failure to generate more than 200 million dollars in revenue doomed it to irrelevancy. We also discuss the a whole host of Napoleonic age topics ranging from the alcoholism of its political and military leaders, the contrast between wonder and enlightenment and the destruction of near-total war, and its totally alien views on masculinity--alright lads, Ship shape and Bristol Fashion! POP ART, WHERE WE FIND THE POP CULTURE IN ART AND THE ART IN POP CULTURE. TOM AND JERRIES: Join me and editor, filmmaker and blogger David Brook (Blueprint Review), as we talk Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and The Enemy Below, both films about naval vessels playing cat and mouse with each other. “To wives and sweethearts, may they never meet.” I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by…Sounds like it's time for Episode 103 of Pop Art, where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. For this episode, I am happy to welcome as my guest, editor, filmmaker and blogger David Brook, who has chosen as his film the 18th century sea epic Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, while I have chosen the WWII drama, The Enemy Below, both films about naval vessels playing cat and mouse with each other. And in this episode, we answer such questions as: What is the attraction of cat and mouse films? Why did Peter Weir retire from filmmaking? Why did Dick Powell only make four movies? What do the context of the times when both films were made tell us about the films? Why did Curd Jurgens flee Germany? Where does Star Trek come in? How do both movies differ from the books? Why did Russel Crowe sell the violin he purchased to play in the movie? We take to the high seas to discuss the 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World starring Russell Crowe!
This week on Dad Movies we tackle 2003's Master and Commander: Far Side of the World. Bill and JMB have wildly different opinions on this maritime classic. We tackle the quiet of war, why it's hard to make friends as an adult, what it means to love a friend, and why men need friends. Trigger warning: We talk about a suicide that happens in the film. Nothing graphic but some listeners have let us know they like a warning.
Flog the jib and shiver me timbers, it's time to set sail with the first of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin novels Master and Commander. It's equal parts ship jargon, ship action, and shipmen (aka sailors) pondering themes of isolation and authority. Plus, we get to the bottom of who exactly is the master and who is the commander. Our theme music was composed by Nick Lerangis. Advertise on OverdueSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Last week of April means we're getting beer'd by one of you! Our randomly selected audience pick this month comes from Jeff, and he requested a total Dad movie: Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. So hoist the sails, batten down the hatches, perform a sweet string duet, watch out for flightless cormorants, and avast, ye mateys! *Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World © 2003 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, Universal Studios and Miramax Film Corp.

Retired Gen. H.R. McMaster—Hoover Institution senior fellow, former national security adviser, and foreign policy expert—makes his first appearance on the Remnant to discuss China, Russia, and Afghanistan. He and Jonah examine what led to the war in Ukraine, the likelihood of Xi Jinping invading Taiwan, and whether institutional failures were to blame for the chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal. They also dig into America's shifting role on the world stage and what our defense budget should look like. By the end, one question remains unanswered: What's the best war movie ever made?
