Sport fishers say a new discussion paper shows their rights are at risk - but First Nations say that's not the case. We walk you through it.

In Part Two of our Summer Special featuring a panel of movie industry experts, we analyse the most cherished racing movies; the classic Grand Prix (1966) as well as other celebrated motorsport films Rush (2013), Days of Thunder (1990) and Le Mans (1971). Are they any good as movies and what does it take to create a film that appeals to all audiences, not just motorsport enthusiasts? And what, if anything, did this summer's Apple blockbuster F1 Movie with Brad Pitt take from them? We explore how well the various stories and plotlines work and the all-important action sequences. We reveal which cues they take from each other. How are female characters depicted and how does their treatment compare across the decades? Which films were commercially successful and which ones flopped? Finally, if the master rolls of all these films were in a burning warehouse and only one could be saved for posterity, which one would the experts rescue? The answer may surprise you. With James Allen in the studio are: Eddie Hamilton, editor of Top Gun Maverick and the two most recent Mission Impossible films. Adrian Wootton OBE, runs the British Film Commission (encouraging productions like F1 to film in the UK). Mark Lane is an award-winning movie producer, with over 40 credits including I am not a serial Killer and The Cut. Nick Manzi is a producer with a string of hits from Blitz to Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and a lifelong F1 enthusiast. This week we gather a stellar line-up of movie industry insiders as we break down the summer blockbuster F1 Movie, which has now earned over half a billion dollars at the box office, so deserves some deeper consideration. Having earlier looked at it from the point of view of journalists and fans, we now get the movie experts to cast an eye over it; is it technically a good film? How well does the story work, and what about the all-important action sequences? How does the treatment of female characters compare? And do movies like this do any long-term good for the sport? In Part II next week, the panel will compare it with the 1960s classic Grand Prix as well as other classic motorsport films Rush, Days of Thunder and Le Mans. Are they any good as movies? Nick and Angela greet good friends who love to travel on two wheels. Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman bring their passion for adventure to Dish following the release of their latest TV show, Long Way Home. Their fourth motorcycle trip together sees them plot a path through 17 European countries on two vintage bikes. The Long Way series began in 2004 when the pair embarked on an epic route from London to New York, via Asia, in Long Way Round. Each trip they take is characterised by beautiful landscapes, chance encounters, good (and not so good) food and Charley and Ewan's close friendship. Ewan McGregor has been on our screens since his acting debut in 1993. His hugely successful career includes unforgettable roles in Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, Star Wars, Salmon FIshing in the Yemen and Moulin Rouge!. Charley, who met Ewan on a film set in 1997, is well known for his TV adventures, including By Any Means, which saw him travel from Ireland to Australia using any modes of transport he could find. He has also participated in the Dakar Rally, known to be one of the world's toughest and most dangerous motorsport competitions. There's not a lot of room to spare on this week's table, with a feast of food and drink to tempt our guests. At Ewan's request, Angela serves a slice of nostalgia in the form of Melba toast with chicken liver pâté, smoked mackerel pâté and pâté de campagne, before bringing out the haggis bon-bons. Drinks are negronis, tweaked by Charley, who suggests switching the gin for tequila, and a Pentire coastal spritz for Ewan. This is followed by an epic tomahawk steak with spicy dipping sauce and fries, paired with a glass of Journey's End Sir Lowry Cabernet Sauvignon. After arriving on motorbikes (a Dish first), Charley and Ewan quickly settle at the Dish table, where chat moves from boiled egg banter to bagpipes and classic Mongolian hospitality. Charley shares one of his favourite recipes and Ewan reminisces on an unforgettable meeting with Delia Smith. The episode finishes with Nick and Angela checking out the bikes, a moment you can watch on our YouTube channel as part of the full episode. You can watch Long Way Home on Apple TV+ now. Lamar Fairmint is a young man I'm lucky to know. I finally got a chance to meet him in Costa Rica at the Retreat—no question he had the most interesting background of anyone who attended. In this episode, we talk about what it was like growing up on the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Eastern Oregon. Lamar shares stories about his Native roots, family history, and what it means to live with both Native and Black heritage. We also talk about the weight of generational trauma—and how he's learning to carry it with more grace as he gets older. Before getting to know Lamar over the past few years, I'd never known anyone who grew up on a Reservation. Come to think of it, I'd also never met a salmon fisherman. But that's what Lamar's does. He's a commercial fisherman. And his business does well enough that he spends half the year traveling the world. The origins of his fishing career are interesting too. He says fishing gave him purpose after dropping out of San Diego State, and shares what life on the water has taught him about patience, resilience, and doing things "your own way."

We are back. Thank you all for bearing with us while we get our ducks in a row for another year of the Country Life Podcast. If it's even possible, it's going to be better than last year, that we can guarantee. Our first guest for 2025 is the legendary Marina Gibson, angler extraordinaire, who was more than happy to indulge me in lots of fishing related conversation. She was at Gleneagles, where she had just been sending out the first cast of the salmon season at the hotel, with accompanying bagpipes and whisky pouring to bless the river. Gleneagles has plenty of fishing and fieldsports related activities, which you can look at here. It's also, and this goes without saying, an immensely wonderful hotel. Marina has been fishing pretty much since she could walk and spent 30 minutes making me extremely envious about her career. She's travelled the world, fishing in rivers, lakes and oceans for everything and anything. We talked about her favourite fishing spots, her favourite fish to catch, and some of the absolute monsters of the deep she's landed. We also got a bit more serious, talking about the desperate state of some of the UK's waterways, and what, if anything, can be done to save them. Salmon in particular have been suffering in recent years, and it's going to take a lot of work to get stock levels rising again. But fishing isn't all about catching fish. It's about taking time away from the world, from emails and Instagram, and working on your own mental health. The benefits are scientifically proven. Did you know that fishing can even be prescribed on the NHS? It was a fantastic conversation to start 2025, and sets a very high bar for the rest of the year. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did recording.Episode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Marina GibsonEditor and Producer: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via Pixabay Hosted on Acast. This month, I reflect on a unique and transformative experience that took me out of my comfort zone: a salmon fishing retreat on a remote river in my home province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Joined by five incredible individuals— Andrew, Enrique, Geoff, Mark, and Pete —we embraced the opportunity to disconnect from our usual routines and engage deeply with one another. Despite the low water levels limiting our fishing time, we made the most of our days by engaging in profound conversations that touched on everything from politics and religion to social issues like homelessness. It was an eye-opening experience that highlighted the power of authentic, values-driven dialogue among highly accomplished individuals. Listen in as I share the lessons and insights gleaned from this retreat, emphasizing the importance of open and respectful communication even on potentially contentious topics. These five days were a testament to the enriching power of genuine human connections. This episode is not just about the retreat but also about how such experiences can foster personal growth, build strong relationships, and reinforce the core values that drive effective leadership. What You'll Learn: • The immense value of authentic human connection. • The importance of disconnecting to reconnect with our core values. • How to have constructive conflict and mutual respect, even on contentious topics. • Balancing passion with humility: The key ingredients to an engaging conversation and personal growth. • The power of community and diverse perspectives. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/608 Presented By: Togens Fly Shop, Waters West, Skwala Do you want to know the best fly lines for Atlantic salmon fishing? Have you ever wondered when to use a longer leader with a sinking line for that perfect fly presentation? Topher Browne is back on the show to break down spey lines, fish physiology, and all the good stuff in his Atlantic salmon books. Find out how to tell when your fly is in the fishing zone and why he uses an out-of-production Scandinavian line. Plus, get to know the guy who's caught more steelheads than anyone on the planet! Show Notes with Topher Browne on Atlantic Salmon Fishing. 01:50 - We had Topher on Episode 464 about a year ago, and it was a hit! We're bringing him back for round two to dive deeper into his Atlantic salmon books and more. But before that, I asked Topher what he's been up to since we last talked. 02:26 - Topher had his toughest June ever last year due to climate change. He spent 17 days on the Quebec and New Brunswick rivers without catching fish. 06:04 - Topher is a field editor for Chasing Silver, an Atlantic salmon and steelhead-specific magazine. He mentions that the Norwegian and Icelandic salmon reports were bad. 09:26 - Topher shares his fishing experiences with his friend Greg Pearson. He and Greg worked on a spey DVD for Scientific Anglers in 2005 called Spey to Z. 16:09 - Topher uses a Seaguar Blue Label fluorocarbon leader for its durability. He typically starts with a 20-pound tippet for early-season fish. 20:18 - Topher's advice: tweak your fishing techniques based on water flow, temperature, clarity, and fish behavior. Here are some key takeaways: Early-run fish are more aggressive and likely to move longer distances for a fly. Topher suggests using a floater in low, clear water to make it easier to speed up your fly. Use longer leaders in clear water to avoid spooking fish. Select fly colors more visible in dirty water, like black, orange, and red. Quicker movements in clear water prevent fish from losing interest in the fly. 36:14 - Topher talks about the advantages of using Scandinavian lines for salmon fishing. 46:06 - Topher did several experiments to compare depths using different techniques. He found that the angler's techniques matter more than the sinking rate of the fly line. Topher notes that while precision isn't necessary, knowing your fly's depth can greatly improve your fishing success. 53:45 - Topher recalls fishing with Jim Adams. He said that Jim has probably caught more steelhead than anyone. Jim's strategy involved targeting the fish in shallow, quiet spots along the river's edges. 57:00—For Topher, the Triple D line from Guideline is the best line for Atlantic salmon. These triple-density lines are customizable in length and weight but were later discontinued. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/608

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/564 Presented by: Northern Rockies Adventures, Angler's Coffee, Togiak River Lodge Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors In this episode, we had the absolute pleasure of chatting with none other than Jim Teeny, a true legend in the fly fishing world, about king salmon fishing. From creating the game-changing Teeny Nymph to revolutionizing fly lines, Jim's done it all. So, grab a cup of your favorite brew, kick back, and let me take you through some of the highlights from our conversation with Jim. Episode Chapters with Jim Teeny on King Salmon Fishing 00:01:36 - Jim shares his upcoming trips with us including his trip to Jurassic Lake in Argentina where he once caught a giant rainbow trout. 00:03:16 - He takes us down memory lane to the 1960s. Imagine this: Jim and his buddy head out to Oregon's East Lake, not knowing they're about to make fly fishing history. That's where the iconic Teeny Nymph was born. And the fly lines? Well, Jim's quest to better sink rates led to a friendly chat with Scientific Anglers, sparking a revolution in how we think about fly lines. Who knew a simple idea could change so much? 00:09:50 - According to Jim, if the water is high in Alaska, the kings will often be on the brackish side of the water. When he's fishing there, he mostly uses his TS-Series and a short leader like three to four feet. When targeting chinooks, he uses a single-hand rod. 00:17:38 - Jim's philosophy on fishing, "I spot 'em I got 'em", is pretty straightforward – if you can see the fish, you can catch it. He swears by polarized glasses and a keen eye. During our talk, he shared some epic moments on steelhead fishing. It's all about reading and understanding the water and being in the right place at the right time. He also details how he would present a fly to the fish. 00:24:49 - He shares a story that he also wrote in his book titled "Fly Fishing Great Waters". One day on their teeny flies and fly lines, they hooked 77 king salmon. Talking about King Salmon with Jim is like listening to an action-packed adventure novel. He's fished from Alaska to the Pacific Northwest and has stories that'll make your reel spin. 00:41:12 - He gives us valuable tips on fishing for Sockeye salmon in Alaska. He mentions the colors that would get you sockeyes and kings, but their number one is hot pink. He also shares about that time when he won a fishing tournament on saltwater. 00:49:18 - Jim's not one to stay put. He shares tales of his fishing trips around the globe. Each adventure is a mix of stunning scenery, amazing catches, and great company. It's like taking a world tour while chasing after the next big catch. 00:55:08 - He briefly shares how he came to start up a business in fly fishing. 1:00:47 - He gives a shout-out to John Randolph, editor of the Fly Fisherman magazine, and Lefty Kreh whom he looks up to in the industry.
