Singular-voiced American comedic auteur Bobcat Goldthwait writes, directs, and stars in his absurdist satire of the 1980s stand-up comedy scene reimagined as a grimey city infested with infighting sub-castes of clowns whose insecurities, addictions, and lack of talent lock them in a perpetual rut of demeaning gigs, black-out benders, and petty jealousies. But one stands apart: Shakes. Perhaps the most talented and definitely the most alcoholic and self-sabotaging of them all. Join our Patreon and support the podcast! Been quit the yuk fest last two weeks for Joe and Jacques (SADLY, Biff is on ER this week) - but the numbers of shows they're gone to and a couple nights of watching Joe's Plex till 3am … they might have past the legal limit of laughter allowed. Jacques has had more “booked shows” in the last month then all last year and is hoping his 1 on 1 classes with mentor Mike Koutrobis and working with Jim McCue on HIS podcast and the Boston Comedy Festival (all next week) will lead to more spots coming up. A week after talking to the legendary comedian/actor Tony V (sideshow drops next week), Joe and Jacques saw him at Off Cabot in Beverly MA … very nice intimate setting … oh, and Tony V's BFF … Mr. Shakes The Clown, Bobcat Goldthwait. Arguably the best show they have ever been to together … then week later, they (along with Jacques' favorite sister) saw (friend of the podcast) Steve Bjork take his next special … AND Steve's walk out music was Jacques' bands latest release, Tucker (off the Trump Era EP on Spotify under Dan Cray) Couple nites on Joe's Plex together watching Batman (Adam West), Get Smart, Benny Hill (holds up) … MTV's 1985 year in review, LOTS of 70's game shows … too much fun. Where is Kate Middleton? Whiny dbags on (far right) wanna know what drugs did Sleepy Joe get from Hunter AND will we get dick picks (for the record … we hope so.) Oh and watch Our Flag Means Death and have a good cry. Written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait and starring Goldthwait, Julie Brown, Tom Kenny, Blake Clark and Adam Sandler, Shakes the Clown was a critical and commercial failure that has since been reappraised and appreciated by a cult audience. Thirty years of America feeling the same way as Jerry Seinfeld about Bobcat Goldthwait. SHAKES THE CLOWN presented what we presumed to be a can't miss viable piece of cinema for a gap week in 1992 because it presented one thing we hate (clowns) with one thing we love (alcoholism) and by the end of the episode we may have found a cure for alcoholics. If you like your Christmas movies—especially the stars of your Christmas movies—to be very big and very loud, Bill Murray's hard-drinking performance in Scrooged probably feels like your perfect slice of turkey. It's an unpopular opinion, but we weren't Murray fans in this movie, especially in the unearned finale where he just comes across as phony and desperate. He also seems…gulp…miscast? He certainly doesn't seem like the right man for the job whenever the focus is on the love story with the delightful Karen Allen. It doesn't help at all that the versatile Richard Donner was apparently a terrible match directing his improvisational star. But, hey, what do we know? This is a beloved holiday comedy, one of the favourites for legions of people. So whether you think you'll agree with our take or not, put a little podcast in your e-e-ears as the 421st Ellises' Analysis tears Scrooged a new one. Well, Actually: Joel Murray was indeed in a couple of movies that Bobcat Goldthwait directed (Shakes The Clown and God Bless America). If you're going to watch a TV special about A Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve (or if you're going to do a reading of Dickens' play like we & our friends did last week…so much fun, highly recommend it!), you'd be wise to have a cup of Sparkplug Coffee handy. Denzel Washington is one of the most charismatic actors on the planet. But in the new "Magnificent Seven" remake, he looks extremely bored. It's a problem! Our keynote review this week is Antoine Fuqua's uninspired "The Magnificent Seven." Then, in our reboot section, we look at two movies about alcoholic children's performers. Exciting, right? First, we look at Robert Zemeckis' "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" Then, to double down, we explore Bobcat Goldthwait's "Shakes the Clown." Anything to serve our readers. An alcoholic clown (Bobcat Goldwaith) learns a valuable lesson about drinking too much on the job and not beating up mimes en route to rescuing his girlfriend (Julie Brown) from a cocaine addled children program host (Tom Kenny) in Shakes the Clown. Then a host of a children's program (Robin Williams) vows to kill his squeaky clean replacement (Edward Norton), but might be beaten to the punch by the mob, a network executive, or many other dangers in the dark comedy Death to Smoochy. Only one R-rated demented children show starring Robin Williams can come out victorious.
This time we're going to talk about the stories that get told. Some of them are lies, some of them are just fiction. Which is kind of like lying. Relevant films for some of Jon's kid's lies are The Sixth Sense and Poltergeist. Also, Shakes The Clown. Speaking of lying, we clear up what's not a lie but interesting nonetheless: when Lex has talked about riding a bike in past episodes, he's been talking about a TerraTrike. Just for the record. As for literature, Moltz's son likes joke books. Jon recommends Captain Underpants which Moltz seconds. Moltz also recommends Timmy Failure. Harry Potter, of course, is good for kids who are maybe 8 and up. We also talk about Minecraft. It's very popular. What's not popular is guys in Britain dressing up as clowns and standing around in the dark. Holy crap, no. Our thanks to Ubooly for sponsoring this episode. Ubooly is a free app in the App Store that features fun activities for you kids that features voice recognition and keeps kids from becoming screen zombies. Like Moltz. Greetings, Succotashians! I think this may be a record of time between episodes for the show. Apologies for the delay. Work, mostly, and I'm three weeks into a new diet which took some reconfiguring of my energy reserves to get the show done. Good news is that the diet's going well - dropped about 15 pounds in 3 weeks - but now Succotash is bloated. This week's epi runs about an hour and 15 minutes. We have much clippage to share, a funny song by Britcom Isabel Fay that's burning up the internet, a classic spot from our friends at Henderson's Pants, and our Burst O' Durst with our Ambassador to The Middle WIll Durst. The core of our show this time around is my interview with Hawaiian comedian David Lee. I first heard about David from his father when I was vacationing on Oahu last year. His dad's a bartender at the Outrigger Canoe Club and as we got to talking, he seemed a little less than pleased that his boy was pursuing the comedy, and was doing it in Colorado Springs of all places. Being a supporter of those who have chosen the noble profession, I was determined to get David a little attention, so I tracked him down and we got this epi's interview recorded via Skype a few days ago. His journey to the comedy stage is an interesting one, especially when you consider that not many stand-ups get their start as a drug dealer. David reveals that and more in our chat. I wanted to give a nudge to some of the places you can get Succotash nowadays, in addition to the omnipresent iTunes. Stitcher Smart Radio is a great way to stream our show to your device, whether you're on an Android or iOS gadget. And each episode gets rebroadcast over at Clutch & Wiggle Entertainment Radio, so you can pick us up there. Then there are a couple of other apps to check out as well. I've been talking up Podbay, which taps directly into iTunes' podcast library and stream whatever you select to your iDevice. And now Apple has just launched their own podcast app, which allows you to select, stream and/or download your favorite shows. Enough biz. Let's get to the stuff. Here's what's what on Epi28: Probably ScienceYour affable podscientists Matt Kirshen, Brooks Wheelan and Andy Wood return, along with their guest Bil Dwyer of TV's Battlebot fame. Thesse guys have such a good time kicking around some every day sorts of stories that this clip doesn't even get into the meaty, sciencey part of the show. (Incidentally, I'm reviewing this particular epi of PS as part of This Week In Comedy Podcasts over on Splitsider this week!) I Am IdiotHoward, Ben and Keith continue to crankout the p’casts and give us Yanks hope that not everyone in the UK is as sophisticated and cultured as that English accent would have us believe. In this case, guest Bobcat Goldthwait gets together for Part 1 of a two-part interview.
