In this episode, we will hear some amazing poetry from one of my favorite poets (sidenote: please be sure to go support his work) and we will learn why both apologizing and forgiving should happen quickly if we want to achieve our goals. One of my favorite poems, called “how to be a person” by Shane Koyczan states this beautifully. We'll hear a little piece of this poem and I'll share my own learning about forgiveness and apologizing. Why it's important and how we can get better at both.FOLLOW JustinInstagram - @JustTriesYouTube - Just TriesTwitter - @JustTries_Tiktok - @justtriesPinterest - JustTriesFacebook - Just TriesLinkedIn - Justin

Even if you're not completely aware of Shane Koyczan's poem “To This Day”, at least 25 million other people are. That's how many views the YouTube video of the poem has as of the time we made this episode. It's not just a great poem, it strikes a nerve. “To This Day” talks in a very direct and meaningful way about the effects of bullying and how people can carry it with them from the playground deep into adulthood. Because, many times, it's not just kids messing around, it's actual assault or emotional abuse or a kind of terrorism that can fall under the category of trauma.Shane was bullied from a very young age and had a hard time making friends throughout his childhood. He also had a key ally: his grandmother Loretta, who encouraged him to write things down. When he reached university, he found more encouragement for his writing and his talent bloomed.Today, Shane is a successful writer and a person with depression and a performer who has had a hard time getting by during the pandemic. In this episode, Shane Koyczan shares a poem about his grandmother that left us speechless.Find out more about Shane Koyczan at his website, ShaneKoyczan.com. It's a double dose of different on the pod this week as Stefan attends to a family situation so our friend Chris James fills in as a guest host, and we have our first-ever poet on the program, as one of Canada's finest poets, Shane Koyczan, joins us on the show. The episode starts with a poetic bang as Shane gives John easily the most intense "Start the Party!" directions he's ever received, and it only goes on from there as we wonder at just how Shane, who is a devoted listener, even got into Blocked Party in the first place. That aside, the Block Tale absolutely delivers as Shane encounters a fan on Facebook who writes one of the more bizarre screeds in the comments we've ever seen on this show and Chris and John give a dramatic reenactment of it. We also get into returning to live shows, writing poetry during the pandemic, and our usual nonsense like curling video games, a great license plate, terrible stadium food, and Shane introduces us to the "Democracy Manifest" incident. If you also know your Judo well, you can head on over to patreon.com/blockedparty to THROW us a few bucks (Judo joke) and support the program. In return for that support, you can get wonderful things like the THREE bonus episodes we do every single month, like the Mailbag coming your way this week. Plus we've got the famed $100 Club which gets you access to secret bonus eps, merch discounts, a super-exclusive Discord channel, and a Cameo from Stefan and John. It's a delight, so check it out. Shane Koyczan is a poet who is returning to the road for some tour dates which you can find on his website at shanekoyczan.com. You can follow him on Twitter at @koyczan and on Instagram at @shane_koyczan.
Shane Koyczan is a spoken-word poet and writer, best known for writing about issues like bullying, cancer, death, and eating disorders. Shane is best known for the anti-bullying poem “To this Day” which has amassed over 25 million views on YouTube and performed live at a Ted Talk event. In this episode of #OurAnxietyStories Shane reflects on his journey with anxiety, sharing that bullying played a major role during his years as a student. Interested in pursuing the arts, Shane was often met with discouragement and doubt from guidance counsellors, who instead pressured him to follow the status quo. Eventually, Shane stopped letting other people plant seeds of doubt in his mind and pursued a career in the arts. Although success did not come overnight, Shane’s perseverance and dedication to his craft allowed him to touch millions of hearts worldwide. Do all you can to stay afloat! “If you're going through hell, keep going.” - Winston Churchill Sometimes simply holding on or standing still until the storm passes is the only reasonable thing to do. Or perhaps, learn a thing or two while the storm rages on. “If your heart is broken, make art with the pieces.” - Shane Koyczan
North by Northwest from CBC Radio British Columbia (Highlights)
North by Northwest's resident poet, Natalie Lim did things a little differently. She took up a challenge by guest host Rohit Joseph to find a poem that resembles the lyricism and flow of 90's hip hop groups like A Tribe Called Quest. She came through with a pleasant surprise, a spoken-word poem/song hybrid by B.C's very own Shane Koyczan.
Our look at Canada's best modern poets continues with Shane Koyczan He explores his battles with mental health, performing during the pandemic, and heartbreak. Tech Expert Andy Baryer chats about insane lumber prices and how difficult it can be to do anything DIY these days. He also chats about his amazing robotic lawn mower. Did you know each generation has its own cultural influences, that dictate how they view the world? Each week this month we are hearing, in their own voices, from both Generation Z and Millennials. Today you join three Millennial guests in our studio, Sam Rodgers, Hannah Weiers, and Ryan Wilson to discuss issues that resonate with them. One current pervasive terror, old as the oldest relationships, is the centerpiece for a frank discussion, bullying. Shane Koyczan in his now very famous poem To This Day expresses his own experiences of being bullied as a child and the profound and lasting effects on him. He also affirms the inner strength that allows people to move beyond the names they are called. One verse reads: “Every school was a big top circus tent and the pecking order went from acrobats to lion tamers from clowns to carnies; These were miles ahead of who we were we were freaks, lobster claw boys, and bearded ladies; Oddities juggling depression and loneliness playing solitaire spin the bottle trying to kiss the wounded parts of ourselves and heal; But at night while the others slept, we kept walking the tightrope it was practice and yeah some of us fell. But I want to tell them that all of this is just debris, leftover when we finally decide to smash all the things we thought we used to be, and if you can’t see anything beautiful about yourself, get a better mirror, look a little closer, stare a little longer, because there’s something inside you that made you keep trying despite everyone who told you to quit. You built a cast around your broken heart and signed it yourself. You signed it “They were wrong”. Because maybe you didn’t belong to a group or a clique, maybe they decided to pick you last for basketball or everything. Maybe you used to bring bruises and broken teeth to show and tell but never told, because how can you hold your ground if everyone around you wants to bury you beneath it? You have to believe that they were wrong! They have to be wrong... Why else would we still be here?” You don't want to miss this.

By turn hilarious and haunting, poet Shane Koyczan puts his finger on the pulse of what it's like to be young and ... different. "To This Day," his spoken-word poem about bullying, captivated millions as a viral video (created, crowd-source style, by 80 animators). Here, he gives a glorious, live reprise with backstory and violin accompaniment by Hannah Epperson.

Tonight there’s a can’t miss show going on at the West End, so we’re pre-recorded. Tonight’s concert features two great bands who have visited us in the past for some conversation and live performances. Those were great sessions, worthy of reviewing while we dash off to see the concert tonight. So, we revisit classic live sessions with The Wooden Sky (recorded in February, 2010) and The Sunparlour Players (recorde in November, 2009).
We’ve got a whole lot of great new music tonight, and a special Stones tribute set in honour of tonight’s show by Pegger’s Banquet at the West End.

Pre-recorded this week, but well worth tuning in for. Tonight we’ve got some great new music, as well as some old classics we don’t get to hear often enough. We rock out a bit more than usual, hang out with Ryan Adams & friends, we get a little wordy & poetic, and, for no particular reason, we look back at a superstar folk fest workshop I saw years ago.
