Welcome back to the pod! This week we're heading back to 2011 and the film Margin Call. Now lots of you may have missed this when it first came out but its online popularity has given it a real second wind. We get stuck into some of the best scenes in the film in particular the boardroom sequence where Jeremy Irons lays down the law, we discuss the nature of how money can change an individual, how morality and self preservation can get in the way of each other and what lengths people will go to to ensure survival in their own bubble. How about this for a cast by the way: Kevin Spacey as Sam Rogers, Paul Bettany as Will Emerson, Jeremy Irons as John Tuld, Zachary Quinto as Peter Sullivan, Stanley Tucci as Eric Dale, Simon Baker as Jared Cohen, Demi Moore as Sarah Robertson, Penn Badgley as Seth Bregman, Mary McDonnell as Mary Rogers, Aasif Mandvi as Ramesh Shah. Hell of a shoot out for MVP!There are few redeeming features around any of the characters but we take a look at which characters seem to have some level of moral sensibility - as we rank them on the scumbagometer! Finally we discuss whether a film can become a fine wine through the nature of its online presence and being resurfaced through Youtube! Lots to get into - back with you on Friday with what to watch this weekend!Time to get watching for next week: Into the Wild (2007) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Hey, soccer fans! Does anyone at the Chicago Fire take a day off? The club recently announced two new signings, both defenders that are sure to bolster the backline for the 2025 season. First, the Men in Red have signed Sam Rogers, a player that Gregg Berhalter gave a USMNT appearance in 2023. He has proven himself a solid player in Norway and USL, and hopefully his game will translate to Major League Soccer. The Fire also signed Portuguese youth international Leonardo Barroso. Barroso has a wealth of youth experience playing for Portugal and Sporting CP B, and will be part of the next generation of great Fire defenders - or the next great Fire transfer. In the second half, Nick looks at how these signings allowed Wyatt Ombserg to sign with the New England Revolution. We also discuss the financial issues that put the Philadelphia Union on the FIFA transfer ban list. Tune in for all this and more! Tune in and join the conversation! Do you edit videos with your eyes or your ears? It may sound like an odd question, but hear us out! Many video editors focus on visuals first, which are definitely important. But audio is just as (if not more) important to your videos. In fact, the number one reason why people stop watching a video is poor audio.Joining this episode of The Visual Lounge is Sam Rogers, President & Principal Consultant of Snap Synapse, a content production company that specializes in learning and development. He's also a musician, so it's safe to say that audio is a big part of his life.In this episode, Sam explains why video editors need to take an ear-first approach to editing videos. His approach isn't just about audio quality. It's also about whether that audio is helping your video tell a story, get a message across, and make your audience feel what you want them to feel. He shares some tips for leading with audio in this episode, whether that be voice, music, or sound effects, to help you make the most impactful videos.Learning points from the episode include:00:00 - 01:32 Introduction to Sam01:32 - 02:55 Why Sam takes an ear-first approach and what it means02:55 - 04:31 The role of things beyond voice in videos04:31 - 06:32 The role of music in supporting a story 06:32 - 07:34 Tips for leading with the ear when editing 07:34 - 08:08 OutroImportant links and mentions:Connect with Sam on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/samrogers/Snap Synapse: https://snapsynapse.com/

He earned his first coordinator role at Howard University, followed by stints at William & Mary, Hawaii, Pittsburgh, and Texas before landing his current role at UNLV. At Pittsburgh, Marion coached receiver Jordan Addison, who was drafted in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings and at Texas, Marion coached receiver Xavier Worthy, who was selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Coach Marion has faced multiple challenges and setbacks throughout his life. He had to change schools almost on a yearly basis growing up, had friends get shot, a mother that got arrested, and was homeless for part of his college football career. Not to mention, Marion suffered multiple season-ending knee injuries both in college and in the NFL. A record-setting receiver at Tulsa University, Marion is today known as the innovator of the “Go-Go Offense.” As it relates to building a team, Brennan likes to say that “How you play without the football determines how much you love your teammates.”

For the 9th Underground Huddle we welcomed Jeremy Foley, who served as the Director of Athletics for the University of Florida from 1992 – 2016. Foley's career path was a unique one, having started as an intern in 1976 and moving through the ranks all the way up to his appointment as AD…all at the same school. Foley was responsible for hiring two of the most successful head coaches in college sports history: Urban Meyer (football) and Billy Donovan (basketball). During his tenure at UF, Meyer won two national titles and coached players such as Tim Tebow, Brandon Spikes, Maurkice Pouncey, and Mike Pouncey. Donovan also won two national titles and served as the head coach for Al Horford and Joakim Noah. Under Foley's leadership, the University of Florida became the first college program in history to own both the men's basketball and football national titles in the same calendar year. In total, Foley led the Gators to 27 national championships and it's no surprise that Foley has won multiple Athletic Director of the Year awards in his career. According to University of Florida's athletics' website, Foley “handled virtually every aspect of the $119.3 million athletic program during his athletic administrative career.”

We caught up with Sam Rogers while he was with the United States national team in Los Angeles. It's been quite a couple years for Rogers, who turned disappointment over not making the Sounders first team into a journey that now has him poised to win his first senior national team cap. We talked about that journey and how he's enjoying life in Norway. Note: This is the first of what will become a regular series of interviews. This is available to all subscribers, but we'll likely start releasing extended cuts for paid subscribers through Substack in the next few months.
