The Salvation Army stepped in to help the community of Shawnee Oklahoma after a tornado hit the area, causing significant damage to homes and businesses. The officers, employees, and volunteers of The Salvation Army have worked tirelessly to provide meals, hydration, emotional and spiritual care to those affected by the disaster.   Captain Stacey Connelly, Corps Officer for The Salvation Army, shared stories of survivors who have received aid from the organization. One woman recounted the harrowing experience of her home being destroyed while she, her husband, and their dog were seeking shelter in a closet. Jarrett Davis is from Shawnee Oklahoma. Jarrett owns and operates JD Showpigs with his wife Alli and daughters Jadie and Tatum. They raise crossbred and purebred show pigs and breeding stock that have won shows across the county. Jarrett graduated at Oklahoma State University, and went on to be an agricultural education teacher and FFA advisor for 6 years. Making his amateur debut at LFA 1, Elijah Johns has become one of LFA's most known featherweights. Now a 9-2 professional fighter, Johns says he's ironed out nearly every aspect of the sport, even the fight before the fight. I first saw him compete in person at LFA 138 in Shawnee Oklahoma and he was easily the most impressive fighter on the card. Elijah fought 2017 Greco Roman World Champion World Champion Masuto Kawana of Japan and dominated the fight to a unanimous decision. Johns battered Kawana throughout the fight and came close to stopping him a couple of times. Now in his eight season, Sean Mikel Baugh is the Artistic Director of the Turtle Creek Chorale. Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sean studied music at Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Central Oklahoma and was awarded a Master of Music in Conducting degree from the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University where he was named outstanding graduate conductor. At the Meadows School, Sean served as assistant conductor of the world-renowned Meadows Wind Ensemble. He has studied with Nancy Hill Cobb, Jack Delaney, Paul Phillips and many others.Sean has been called “expressive and incredibly dynamic, a consummate musician with a side of showman. He exhilarates audience members and singers alike.” He is regularly praised for his innovative programming and expressive technique. His choirs have enjoyed positive reviews and have been lauded for their musicality and emotional performances. An active advocate for male choral music, Sean regularly commissions new works from established composers.Sean also serves as Conductor and Associate Director of Music and Worship for Dallas-based Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ where he leads the choir and orchestra for Sunday worship services. Kearns Award for Excellence and Innovation in Education.  He served as Trustee of the Ford Foundation (New York) from 2006-2017 and is a past Chair of the Board of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  In 2020, Harper Collins published Cliff's first book entitled Master of None: How a Jack of All Trades Can Still Reach the Top.  In addition, he has been the guest on numerous national television, radio and podcast programs, including his own podcast, “Master of None”.

For All Ears this week, Abby hosts a rare and revealing interview with On Being host, Krista Tippett. Krista talks about growing up in Shawnee Oklahoma, and the enduring influence of her grandfather, a Southern Baptist minister, on her life’s work. Krista describes the experience of going from a sheltered, church-centric upbringing, to throwing herself into big, bold life experiences (Brown University, a Fulbright Scholarship in Bonn, a job at the US Embassy in Cold War Berlin) and the disorientation that unsettled her once she realized that powerful people in important jobs don’t necessarily have steadfast principles or rich emotional lives. Her subsequent path to divinity school and the creation of the On Being Project have been a process of defining what a “moral imagination” is, and why we, as a culture and as a country, need it. Krista and Abby also discuss how we can learn from one of the most trying and tragic years in our nation’s history, and where we can find hope, which Krista says, “is a muscle that keeps us moving and acting and doing.” It’s a fitting conversation to end the year on, and we wish you all the best for this holiday season. Today we're switching gears to the church. I'm so thankful to have Dr. Todd Fisher on the podcast today. Todd is the pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee Oklahoma and he also teaches at Oklahoma Baptist University and at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. At the end of the episode, Todd quotes A.W.
