Star Trek Discovery Podcast, featuring Picard and Lower Decks
Star Trek: Discovery – Short Treks, Episode 3: The Brightest Star Ruthie and I are back with the third Short Trek! We recorded episodes for the first three Short Treks on Tuesday, December 18th in back to back to back fashion, and this is the final episode that we recorded that night. This Short Trek is titled The Brightest Star. It was written by executive story editors Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt, and directed by co-executive producer Douglas Aarniokoski. Finally, an origin story! This is the first Short Trek that I would consider an origin story. This one focuses on our favorite alien commander, Saru! Well, he’s at least the favorite alien for one of us. As such, Ruthie didn’t care for this episode as much as I did, as she’s not a big fan of his character and/or species, which she finds confusing. I understand that sentiment, as I was expecting more backstory on the prey aspects of his species, and his height, super speed, strength and especially his threat ganglia. I came up with a theory on how this evolved. His species was hunted, probably by the Ba’ul, but that Mirror Universe saying about scared Kelpiens make tough Kelpiens plays in here. The hunt made Kelpiens less tasty, so a system evolved to make them live in a more idyllic surrounding, and that they didn’t live with that fear their whole life. As I’ve said on the podcast many a time, I HATE the term “headcanon”, so I’d prefer to consider this speculation and not anything that can be used as “gatekeeper” material. Speaking of an origin story, are we to believe that the reason why Saru’s species are called Kelpiens because they eat and/or harvest kelp? Really? That’s a little on the nose, don’t you think? Why did she take a shuttlecraft? I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that Lieutenant Georgiou was the one that rescued Saru from Kaminar, and that totally fits the Saru/Georgiou/Burnham dynamic, and why he was so hurt that he didn’t get to serve as the first officer under her. The appearance of Michelle Yeoh was very unexpected in any of these Short Treks, so I was very happy to see her. However, with that in mind, I did not understand part of that aspect of the story. Was there a reason why she took a shuttlecraft down to pick up Saru and not beam down to get him? This seems like the Prime Directive is under effect here, as the Kelpiens are not a warp-capable species, and we see Siranna see the shuttle as it leaves the planet, so this didn’t make sense to me. Fred’s Images As promised, I’ve included images Fred from The Netherlands sent us from his trip to Toronto last year, which showed scenes used in this Short Trek! TNG Roleplaying Game. The first official Star Trek roleplaying game (RPG), Star Trek: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier, was released in 1978 and there have been a number of official Star Trek RPGs since that time. The latest entry in this long tradition is Star Trek Adventures, which includes missions in the eras of The Original Series and The Next Generation. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Amy Nelson, and Justin Oser play a mission from The Next Generation era from the new Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game. Richard serves the role of gamemaster while Amy and Justin have created their own characters for the game. Richard has played many roleplaying games, but this is the first roleplaying game Amy and Justin have ever played. Find out how well they do and if their characters can survive the mission! Innocence. Tuvok may be known for his Vulcan stoicism, but his Vulcan parenting skills are second to none. When Tuvok's shuttle crashes on one of the moons of Drayan Two, he's forced to care for three children who, unbeknownst to him, are actually elderly Drayans aging in reverse. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Suzanne Williamson and Zachary Fruhling discuss the second-season Voyager episode "Innocence," in which we see a kinder, gentler Tuvok keeping the monsters away and singing the children to sleep with a Vulcan lullaby. Suzanne and Zachary also discuss reverse-aging as a metaphor for senility in old age and the fear of death, along with Chakotay's diplomacy learning curve. Shuttlecraft in TOS. As we see across the Star Trek franchise, a flight in a Federation shuttle craft is probably the riskiest thing you can do in the 23rd and 24th centuries. While it set the standard for all future "stranded in a shuttlecraft" stories with The Galileo Seven, TOS used its shuttles in more ways than just that and in this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss all such instances in The Original Series and the films. Did TOS shuttles have warp drive? How easy is it to steal a shuttlecraft? Why take a shuttle when you could just use the transporter? These questions and much more as well as Zach's plug for a guest spot on To The Journey! Chapters Welcome to Standard Orbit! (00:01:23) Warp Drive or No Warp Drive? Realistic and Unrealistic. Have you ever watched The Next Generation and thought that a scene showed exactly how things will work in the future? Or have you ever watched The Next Generation and wondered what the writers were thinking when they wrote a certain element into the script? In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez, Justin Oser, and Amy Nelson choose their top 3 picks for both realistic and unrealistic elements in The Next Generation. Their choices include technology, ideas, relationships, Federation policy, and more. The Galileo 7 shuttlecraft is a legendary ship in science fiction. Almost as iconic as her mother ship, the Galileo made an impression on every Trek fan. Just as the Enterprise model had been safely preserved at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, most fans thought that something similar had happened to the Galileo. But that was not the case. What really happened to this shuttlecraft prop will shock you. It's a dramatic tale worthy of a screenplay. This week, co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto tell you the history of the Galileo 7 on this episode of 70s Trek.
One of the best parts of growing up in the 70s and being a fan of Star Trek were the model kits from AMT. The company, formally known as Aluminum Model Toys out of Troy, Michigan, AMT recognized the value that the Star Trek license had and secured the rights to create model kits by august 1966, a full month before the show went on the air! Co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto talk about these kits on this episode of 70s Trek. During the original network run of Trek, AMT released just two kits, the U.S.S. Enterprise and the Klingon Battle Cruiser. Interestingly, the Klingon ship was designed by Matt Jeffries, the designer of the Enterprise, specifically for AMT. It was released as a model before it ever appeared on screen. During the 70s, AMT saw the growing popularity of Trek in syndication and moved to release more kits. The Galileo 7 Shuttlecraft, the Romulan Bird of Prey, Space Station K-7, th eEnterprise Bridge and an Exploration Set that contained a phaser, communicator and tricorder. If you were a fan of the show and grew up in the 70s, chances are you probably owned at least one of these kits.
