…And we’re at the finale! Woo hoo! You’ve lived through the 2010s via ska music, once again! We’re closing it out with another load of fantastic tracks! Most of these are songs I was surprised to find that I hadn’t played earlier for all y’all! So, let’s get real… I’ve done these “mix tapes” for the 1960s – 2010s now, I’ve done 18 sets of 23 episodes for a total of 414 episodes, and there’s a handful of episodes over at GeekNerdery that I’ve done (but I repeat songs on that one… so… it’s not “cannon?”) and I’ve tried various interview shows over the years (the most recent being “the Ska After Party” and if you’re up for it, I’m still doing that with co-host Matt Vest on “On the Upbeat”), so it begs the question… where do I go from here with 23min of Ska? Is there still gas left in the tank? I sure hope so! I have some ideas, hopefully you’ll come along with me, but do me a favor, tell your ska loving friends about this show… Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of folks saying “Hey check out this band, I just discovered them!” and I’m all “WHAT! I’ve been playing them for years, because that BAND IS AWESOME!” I just want to spread all the ska love, help me out here, eh? Thanks, and I’ll see you all next week! 00:00 – Deal’s Gone Bad – Tell Me what You Know (About Love) (Heartbreaks and Shadows ’14) 03:41 – SKA Petarda – Al Capone (Niewypał ’16) 07:12 – Run and Punch – It’s Not You (No Loose Ends ’13) 09:14 – the Smoking Barrels – in “for” (Unfinished Business ’11) 11:40 – the Shifters – I’m in Love (Limited Edition Tour EP ’13) 14:26 – the Loose Ties – Your Last Chance (Champ of the Week ’12) 16:18 – Soweto – Don in the Arena (Turn on the Music Again ’17) 19:18 – Rudebeard – Au Revoir (Smell Yer Ska ’19) Visit the website at http://www.23Ska.com to find links to band websites and songs featured in this episode. About the Tracks: Nathan Leigh and the Crisis Actors - This Machine Kills Centrists Nathan Leigh and the Crisis Actors are an interesting project that tends to play punk-influenced folk and rock music, but has been known to pull influences from all over the map ranging from swing to ska, to country and beyond. They pulled yours truly into play trombone on this record and it's one of my favorite projects I've been a part of. Their new album, "Myths, Conspiracy Theories and Other Things I Made Up to Sound Interesting" dropped last week, and it even had a ska song on it, lamenting an all too familiar attitude in our political discourse. The Autocratics - Brainwashed Friend The Autocratics, from Tokyo, Japan, are what would happen if you took bands like Bad Manners, Madness, and the Specials further refined that nutty two tone sound to its apex. Fronted by Shuhei Yokota (Rude Bones), The Autocratics have been carrying the two tone torch in Japan for over a decade now and have developed quite a fanbase, and yet remain one of ska's best-kept secrets. So grab your Fred Perry, crack open an ice-cold Stella and enjoy The Autocratics!!! Brainwashed Friends is my favorite track off the band's debut album. Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - Perfect Future Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is, for lack of a better description, perfect. My favorite band by about a mile and a half, having been together for over 30 years they've got a catalog deeper than the Marianas Trench. The band's trademark of blending ska with just about anything you can think of and making it their own is evident on this track, the leadoff/title track of 2009's "Perfect Future " Karikatura - White Lies The quick way to describe Karikatura is to say they play trans-global soul or world indie. A deeper inspection, however, yields a dizzying array of sounds ranging from jazz to cumbia to reggae to funk and of course the aforementioned soul. Crisscrossing the world for over 10 years, they dropped this aggressive meringue track, White Lies, as a response to the Eric Garner murder and Black Lives Matter movement. Diverse and eclectic music with (a) soul. Warsaw Poland Brothers - Summer of Ska Warsaw Poland Brothers are the unsung heroes of the socal/southwest ska scene. Having been active for over 30 years, and forming 2 sub-bands (California Celts, Kalifornia Krauts) they have managed to carve out a cult following from coast to coast. Great songwriting and excellent musicianship from the Poland brothers (Chris and Aaron). Summer of Ska is a single off the as of yet unreleased 8th album! The perfect track to get you ready for summer, even if we're all stuck indoors. Catch these guys if you ever get the chance and wish their singer Chris a happy 50th Birthday! About Chris: Chris Malone is a busy guy. Having been playing trombone in ska bands from all over the NYC/Long Island area for over 20 years, he is currently the bandleader/singer/trombonist in NYC based ska-punk band The Pandemics, he also occasionally plays with raggacore legends Pilfers. In addition to being an active musician, he also runs the fledgling record label, Lonely Atom Records, runs the Touring Ska Bands Facebook group (a resource for independent ska bands looking to book their own tours), and curates a Spotify playlist called The Best Ska Bands You've Never Heard Of that spotlights 5 criminally underrated ska bands from all over the world, hoping to shine a spotlight on all of the great ska bands making great music under most people's radars. The playlist is updated every Wednesday! 00:00 - Nathan Leigh & the Crisis Actors - This Machine Kills Centrists (Myths, Conspiracy Theories, and Other Stuff I Made Up To Sound Interesting '20) 01:59 - THE AUTOCRATICS - Brainwashed Friends (the Autocratics '17) 04:42 - Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - Perfect Future (2020 Remaster) (TOKYO SKA TREASURES '20) 08:28 - Karikatura - White Lies (Speak Now '16) 12:35 - Tommy Tornado and the Clerks - Downhill (Back on Track '19) 17:04 - Warsaw Poland Bros. - Summer of Ska (Summer of Ska '19) RJ sez: I added the Tommy Tornado and the Clerks song because, well, I like that band, and this song seemed like it'd be in good company with all the great tracks that Chris chose. There's not too terribly much I can add about Chris that he didn't already cover, but I don't think he mentioned the Lonely Atom Youtube though, so go subscribe to that! I've known Chris for a few years now, he was even a guest on the late Ska After Party and we've kept up with each other via social media all this while. We've actually verified that we've been at shows at the same time, but that was well before we got in touch with each other. So this wraps up the Convoy series. It was a lot of fun these last 7 weeks, and it went so smoothly and brought so much good stuff to the show I'm fixing to find a way to do it all over again. If I'm lucky, I'll find another talented batch of folks to collaborate with! It's a radio show out of Las Vegas, NV and you can check it out on www.dustdevilradio.com 7pm-10pm Pacific on Wednesday evening! Let's dance people! 00:00 - Wank - Blue Skies (White Knuckle Ride '20) 02:59 - Joker's Republic - Falling Behind (Falling Behind '19) 07:23 - the Dendrites - No Money (Lunchin' with the Dendrites '20) 11:02 - Mr. Kingpin - Ease Your Mind (Ease Your Mind '19) 14:24 - the Sheldons - the Shit is Going On (the Sheldons '19) 18:05 - the Zero Class - Main Street (Main Street '16) 20:25 - Happy Drunk Cartel - If You were an Animal (the Rinsed Years '20) RJ sez: Jr Ska Boss sent me a killer line up for this episode, witched I goosed with tracks from the Dendrites and the Sheldons to send it over the top. It's easy to do when I'm starting with quality picks. See, Jr Ska Boss is not just a DJ over at Viva Ska Radio, and he just doesn't DJ at shows between acts, no no no, he's also a full-on show promoter! I got a chance to meet him at a show he DJ'd a few months ago, and we got on great. I complimented his choices throughout the night and it was some fun conversation, then I was like "Oh, I do a ska podcast" and when I told him the show he seemed super stoked. It was a great moment, and from our latest texts he's expressed that he's honored to contribute to the episode, and well, I have to say, I'm honored that he took the time to collaborate with me. With all of the craziness surrounding the global COVID-19 pandemic, I've found myself listening to a lot more ska. It's hard to put my finger on why, but I'd liken it to my favorite type of comfort food: not only is it good for the soul but it provides a bit of certainty in these uncertain times. To that end, I picked out a few upbeat tunes that I'm hoping will help provide at least a small distraction. Stay safe out there, and keep washing your hands! 00:00 - the KING LION - Skatman (Blank '19) 03:06 - the Kubricks - Criminals (Criminals '20) 05:51 - Roland Alphonso w/ the Skatalites feat. Building on Jim's picks, I added the new single from the Kubricks and the closing track from the Operators. I had the pleasure of meeting Jim and his WCSS co-star at the Jump Up Records 25th Anniversary show a few years back, and I couldn’t be happier then, and I couldn’t be happier now that they’re still in the game creating their show! Wash, wash Washing my troubles away Oh yeah, oh yeah Maybe these words ring hollow in our troubled times. Or maybe they hit just right. Either way, I hope the potent mixture of 2 Tone, ska-punk, and Jamaican ska that follows finds your ears well. Within this mix, you’ll find five tunes from four different countries — a reminder that it’s not just COVID-19 that has gone global! 00:00 - the Crombies - Wash Wash (Dance Crazee '16) 03:22 - Justin Hinds & the Dominoes - Over the River (Over the River / Corner Stone '64) 05:39 - Lxs Fama - la Reina del Desastre (No Caben más Locos '20) 08:55 - the Bionic Rats - New Day Rudie (T.B.R. Building on Kevin's picks, I added the Lxs Fama, Holophonics and Swashbuckling Doctors tracks his already killer line up (and in doing so adding another country to the previous count.) I had the pleasure of meeting Keven and his WCSS co-star at the Jump Up Records 25th Anniversary show a few years back, and I couldn't be happier then, and I couldn't be happier now that they're still in the game creating their show! Ska music has been a big part of my life for over the past 20 years. I even met my wife because of ska music. Being a teenager in Orange County, California in the mid 90’s you couldn’t escape ska music. However, when others stopped listening, ska music stayed in heavy rotation with me. For this playlist, I followed a very simple plan to make it. I picked something old, something new and something local. Five Iron Frenzy, The O.C. Supertones and Less Than Jake are the bands I’ve been listening to the longest. Millington and The Skluttz are the newest bands on the list. Half Past Two, Hooray For Our Side and Codename:Rocky are some of my favorite hometown bands. I hope you enjoy my picks. 00:00 - O.C. Supertones - Supertones Strike Back (the Supertones Strike Back '97) 02:37 - Hooray for Our Side - Don't Panic (Overture '15) 05:05 - Codename: Rocky - Ctl Alt Del (Reboot '16) 07:22 - Less Than Jake - Motown Never Sounded so Good (Anthem '03) 09:55 - the Skluttz - Ska Police (Confidence is Key '20) 13:15 - Millington - Big Man on Campus (Millington '18) 16:45 - Half Past Two - See You Again (See You Again '20) 19:19 - Five Iron Frenzy - Cool Enough for You (Upbeats & Beatdowns '97) RJ sez: On the Upbeat is a hell of a fun podcast, go back and listen to the older episodes while the show is on break! And for full disclosure, Matt had picked different songs for Hooray for Our Side and Half Past Two, but after Half Past Two put out this killer new single we both knew it had to be included. This, of course, threw off the timing of the episode, so I offered up a change to the Hooray for Our Side song to even things out. Luckily Matt agreed and we have another rad episode! Deeply honored to have my pal RJ ask me to do this, and it was an interesting exercise. I appreciate his support and the work he is doing with the podcast and bringing the ska to the people. I took some of my favorite bands as a jumping-off point and the theme materialized out of that. Hope you enjoy it, and if you want to learn to play The Selecter’s Carry Go Bring Come on the Ukulele look for it in an upcoming episode of The Two Tone Singalong at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLY71hkT4ZfXwxhbPR-xX-LzvXFYLOG31l 00:00 – Oreskaband – Carry On (Carry On '14) 03:37 – the Selecter – Carry Go Bring Come (Too Much Pressure '79) 06:25 – Cut Capers – Get Moving’ (Get Moving '17) 09:42 – Sonic Boom Six – Let's Push Things Forward (Keep On Believing '13) 13:16 – the Dualers – Don’t Go (Don’t Go '06) 16:41 – Stubborn All-Stars – Catch That Train (Open Season '95) 19:06 – Counting Coins – Don’t Look Down (Counting Coins '15) RJ sez: Denver Dave is the man! He's been showing his enthusiasm for ska via his projects like "This is Ska" and the "Two Town Uke Sing Along" for oh so many years. I was lucky enough to meet him a few years back, and I'm even luckier to call him my friend. I couldn't think of anyone better than to start off this 7 episode series, where I'm sitting shotgun, and someone else is taking the wheel, than with Denver Dave. Also, this is my 400th episode! After 2 solid ska/punk and high energy ska episodes in a row, I decided to take it down a notch on this one. Also, when I started this session of 23min of Ska I dedicated it to friend Lawless, and well, it's about to get a little Lawless up in here because I'm including a clutch of songs from his Moondust record label on this one. I'm keeping it a bit laid back to make the tone, but also give us all a bit of breather to relax and reflect. 00:00 - the Bandulus - Stop Playin' with My Heart (Love a Woman '19) 02:34 - Alpheus - Rudies (Rudies / Our Time Will Come '20) 05:41 - the Twilights - Dancing Moon (Hear What I Say '18) 08:30 - 4th Street Orchestra - Ah Who Seh? This bit of trucker slang is just a basic reminder to drive safely. So I'd like to take the time to tell all of you out there to take care of yourselves! It's rough out there, and it could get rougher, but don't fret, because you're pretty damn dope. If what you need is some ska music, here it is, but if you need something more, go out and get it. There's no shame in asking for help, for your state of mind, or for your new favorite ska band. There are helpers everywhere and they're easy to find. 00:00 - Bite Me Bambi - Hot Lava (Hot Lava '20) 03:25 - Malambo Ska Band feat. Are you ready for some hard-hitting, speedy as hell, unrelenting ska and ska/punk? If so, you are in luck! I went big and loud on this one, I just couldn't help myself, it's the mood I was in, and I hope you'll agree that it's all pretty rad. Also, how can you just sit and listen to this one? I couldn't even sit still when I was putting this one together! Damn! Get it in your ears! Trucker lingo translation of the title: apparently it means "Love and Kisses" because it is double of the normal "Eighty-Eights" which means simply "Best Wishes." But I'm finding a lot of trucker slang that translates to simply "Best Wishes" and I'm not finding more than one resource that says "Double Eighty-Eights" is even real trucker CB radio talk. I coulda been hoodwinked on this one my fine listeners, but you know, the intent was there to name it something sweet, because, it's the kinda-sorta St. Valentine's Day episode. Get into it! 00:00 - Catbite - Can't Give You Love (Catbite '19) 02:37 - Hepcat - Together Someday (Right On Time '97) 06:21 - the Meow Meows - If You Were My Boy (Somehow We Met '13) 10:06 - New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble - Love & Affection (Break Thru '19) 13:53 - the Georgetown Orbits - Garden of Love (Solar Flares '18) 17:51 - Doreen Shaffer - Nice Time (Adorable '97) 20:51 - Moon Invaders - Baby I Know (the Fine Line '11) And no, I didn't notice the band naming theme of the first 3 bands until I was typing this up just now. I always threaten to make an episode like this, but I usually back out (except that time that I didn't!) This time, after hearing that great new Heavesbee track, I knew I had to go for it again! That's right, it's a totally "rude" episode! This one is for the lads, but don't fret ladies, your time will come soon enough! Here again, we have music from all over the world as well as from the last 20 odd years, as you know, I like to keep it modern where I can. There really is so much good ska since the hey-day of the '90s that I can't believe how blessed we are in the ska community. As always, this episode is the tip of the iceberg, follow those links, get some more music in you head and heart and see these bands live when/if you get the chance! 00:00 - Heavensbee feat. Alright, let's do this, it's time to kick it into gear with this session of 23min of Ska! We've started strong 2 weeks ago, then we hit the 10yr anniversary last week and now it's time to power through with some killer ska! Oddly enough, it is apparently ska show season where I live. I saw a bunch of bands a week ago, and I'm seeing another huge group of bands this weekend. And this isn't so unusual, to be honest! This happens most years, bands tour the South West in order to beat the chill from touring a lot of the rest of the country I guess. It doesn't matter much because, well, damn, I get to go see some live ska, and there's nothing wrong with any of that! 00:00 - the KING LION - Cold Sugar (BLANK '19) 03:26 - Blue Beat Makers - Enamorado de ti (Enamorado de ti '19) 06:11 - the Inverters - the Show Must Go On (the Show Must Go On '19) 09:56 - the Boss Beats - Overflow (III '12) 12:28 - Control This! - Persian Cat Ska (Humble Man '19) 15:47 - the Skatastrophics - Round Town (Round Town '19) 20:57 - Perry Gripp - I Got No Money (I Got No Money '09) Visit the website at http://www.23Ska.com to find links to band websites and songs featured in this episode. Here's something crazy... this podcast is 10 years old! Say what? I seriously do not believe it. On January 23rd, 2010 I posted the first episode of 23min of Ska, not knowing what journey I was about to embark on. It was just a little side project to do when not working on the reality show podcast I was working on at the time. In fact, I wasn't sure if it should be 23 minutes or 15 minutes. To this day I'm still not sure, but 23 feels right. When I started it wasn't weekly, it was twice a month, with only one episode in January, so a new set of 23 episodes was starting on 1/23 each year. In my initial plans, I was going to do the show for 10 years, 2010 - 2020. Each year would have 23 episodes releases on the 11th and 23rd of each month after January. I still almost ended the show in 2016 when I get to the end of the original 9 sets of 23 episodes a process sped up by going weekly. I relented at the last minute because I love doing this show and thought that that would be too early to quit. Now here I am, at my original ending day... and I still don't want to quit. January 23rd, 2020 was supposed to be the first time I was not going to post an episode based on that plan. Kind of glad I didn't. I'm more in love with ska and the ska community than I was when I started this show 10 years ago. This is the 18th set of 23 episodes, so we're well on our way to doubling the number of my original plans by mid-2020. After that... still not going to quit! So buckle up, there's still plenty of rad ska for me to share with you! 00:00 - Last Edition - 10 Years (10 Years '19) 03:32 - the Holophonics - Shiznit (MaSKArades Vol. 14: Not a Cover Band '20) 06:22 - One Night Band - Old(er) (Way Back Home '06) 09:25 - MU330 - Serious (Ultra Panic '02) 11:11 - Telethon - Wander Party (Hard Pop '19) 14:35 - the Fabulous Lolo Meets King Kong Girio - Easy Come and Easy Go Away (My Favorite Heart to Break '15) 18:01 - the Slackers - You don't Know I (Better Late Than Never '96) Visit the website at http://www.23Ska.com to find links to band websites and songs featured in this episode. Welcome to the 18th and latest session of 23min of Ska. This session is all about trucker slang because why not, it's my podcast, I'll do what I want. I'm pulling back on the intense art commitment this time around, but I may make a few tweaks as I go on. Also, I'm taking a break for the next 23 episodes w/ doing the ska label highlights, those were fun, and I'm totally going to do something like that again, but not anytime soon. This episode changed a lot over the last several weeks. I thought it was basically finished in late December. I then took a week off because I wanted to enjoy my limited Christmas time off, and because I wanted this session to occur all in 2020. Then I did two listener selected episodes because I was lazy. I got those listener episodes set up quick too. Hell, those episodes were done a put together by the first, and honestly, I was only going to run "You Call It Vol. 18" and save "You Call It Vol. 19" for the Summer. Then I got the news that my friend Jason Lawless had passed. And it hurt. And I knew I had to make some changes to this episode's playlist. In changing the tracklist I yanked out the ska/punk and changed the opening song. Lawless was always more of a traditionalist, but would still let me natter on about ska/punk and ska/pop and the like. He was also always a supporter of 23min of Ska and of me. It can be odd making new friends as an adult, especially in a scene where everyone else has known each other for years but Lawless never let me feel like an outsider. Hell, neither have any of the people he introduced me to! He was great to this weirdo out of the Midwest when he had no reason to be, and I could never thank him enough for it. Lawless will be forever missed by all who knew him, I count myself lucky to have been one of them. This episode and the next 22 are dedicated to him, his support, his passion, and his "Lawless-ness." Thanks for everything. 00:00 - the Skatalites - Lawless Street (Ska Boo-Da-Ba '65) 03:14 - the Hacklers - Bring it Back (Between the Lines '16) 06:50 - the Scotch Bonnets - Hair Did (Come on Over '19) 10:41 - the Loving Paupers - Where's My Wave (Lines '19) 14:13 - Tommy Tornado and the Clerks - Back on Track (Back on Track '19) 18:07 - Pocket Billiards - My Next Last Time (Troubles Edge '19) 20:59 - Venus Hill - Back on My Feet (Whatever '02) Visit the website at http://www.23Ska.com to find links to band websites and songs featured in this episode. It's another episode where my helpful listeners have suggested the music for! I like this one quite a bit, lots of great songs on it. It's been a rough week for me, so all of your help has been pretty much essential in helping to get this episode out. I literally cannot do this podcast without the bands, or all you helpful listeners, so I appreciate all who took the time to make suggestions these last few weeks to help another top-notch episode get out to all your lovable rude little ears. 00:00 - the Untouchables - Be Alright (Latest & Greatest: Ghetto Stout '00) 02:42 - Joker's Republic - Separation of Chuch and Skate (Separation of Chuch and Skate '20) 05:30 - the Sheldons - No Way (the Sheldons '19) 09:17 - You Dirty Rat - Rattitude (Latrine '18) 12:09 - Souvenir Atómico - Esclavo del Sistema (Souvenir Atómico '17) 15:48 - Black Square - Discord (To the Hills '19) 20:11 - INDK - East Coast Rising (Kill Whitey! First off, thanks to everyone for letting me take a week off! I try not to, but the holidays got to me and I wasn't able to get my stuff together. Such to the effect that I asked for suggestions on what to play on this episode. I got a TON of responses! But hey, we always have next week to play those! Also, feel free to toss your hat into the ring and suggest songs for the next episodes, because man oh man, I have so much going on that I could use the help. Currently mapping out the next year of 23min of Ska and the Ska After Party and I'm very excited to have you all along for the ride. 00:00 - Ska Jazz Messengers - Mil Veces No (Radio Edit) (Mil Veces No (Radio Edit) '19) 03:28 - Bootleg Catch Up - Olympia (Bootleg Catch Up '19) 06:05 - Tom Nevers Field - Impossible (Impossible '19) 08:19 - Vieja Skina - Barrios Altos (4 '19) 13:11 - Crash & the Crapenters - She's Subatomic (She's Subatomic '19) 15:59 - the Swashbuckling Doctors - Here Comes the Milkman (Rescue the Universe '17) 20:25 - Rudebeard - Thrown Away (Wide-Os on the Rise '19) Visit the website at http://www.23Ska.com to find links to band websites and songs featured in this episode. The Toasters album "Dub 56" was my intro into the big world of ska, I will always hold it in high esteem for that alone. Besides, it was a ripper of an album! It started a love of the sound that has never gone away. In my young lust to find more ska music, I took note of the label, Moon Ska, and the label catalog that came with the album. It wasn't long before I was sending away for other CDs that Moon had released. Was I loving every minute of it? You bet I was! Moon was my label for more tradition sounding ska (I went to Dill and Asian Man for my ska/punk and to Jump Up for my local Midwest scene) and I could never get enough. It was a fair time before I met the man behind the label, Robert "Bucket" Hingly of the Toasters. I'm not gonna lie, me and Bucket aren't pals in the least, and he could never pick me out of a line up of 3 goofy white boys, but he's always been a good guy to me. It was years before when I'd see them on tour we'd even talk ska. Honestly, we usually talked about Jack Kirby and his work for Marvel (specifically Silver Surfer) or talk about the other bands on tour. He's a top guy, never made me feel like an idiot about ska history (even when I kind of am) and more than that he's always down to chat. That's what I love about Bucket, he's a man of the people, he's an authority that never feels like it and he tears up the stage! I could talk more about Moon, but this episode really is just a love letter to Bucket. Thank you Mr. Hingly, see you on the road. 00:00 - the Toasters - Dub 56 (Dub 56 '94) 02:41 - Hepcat - the Secret (Out of Nowhere '84) 05:16 - the New York Citizens - the National Front (On the Move '88) 08:00 - the Scofflaws - Back Door Open (Ska in Hi-Fi '95) 10:27 - Let's Go Bowling - You Take Me (Mr. Twist '96) 14:14 - the Articles - Spread Satin (Flip F'real '97) 19:23 - Easy Big Fella - Stuck in the Chapel of Love (Eat at Joey's '87) Photo Credit to Meredith M. This is not a "Best of 2019" list. I dunno, I just usually don't do that kind of thing. And this year would be so hard, 2019 kicked us all a lot of good ska, and this episode is only a small part of it. So yeah, here's a load of 2019 ska and ska/punk for you, and if this is the first time you're hearing some of these bands, kick ass, look more into them, they're all rad. I first became aware of Mossburg Music when I was working w/ the Georgetown Orbits. They really seemed to be a quality label. Later on, I got to know Billy Geoghegan, the founder of Mossburg. He was a great guy, to talk with in general, about running a label, about ska and about this great country. Mossburg isn't confined to a specific area, because Billy isn't. Wherever he goes he brings that Mossburg magic and manages to crank out a few releases. The label has been around in fits and spurts for some time, and I for one really hope that it continues on! 00:00 - the Notables - Freak Shuffle (Godfather Ska / Freak Shuffle '93) 02:55 - Contra Coup - Rudie has Fallen (Run for the Moon '05) 07:24 - the Stingers ATX - Near Me (This Time Around... Ok, so Bad Time Records is a newer label, but I didn't want to discount them. They are the ska/punk label to be watching! Now, yes, the catalog isn't that big yet, but it's getting there and with quality! I'm doing something I don't normally do, and that's including compilation tracks from the same compilation. I've tried to avoid this, but damn if "the Shape of Ska Punk to Come: Volume 1" isn't a killer comp, and the three songs included here are only scratching the surface of that awesomeness! They've done a few rereleases/first time on vinyl, so that's why you see some records that are older than 2019 on here. It looks like they have some big plans for 2020 and I couldn't be more onboard. If you have somehow missed these bands or Bad Time Records before, now you can safely be in the know with this episode an await their every release along with me! 00:00 - J. In what has to be the most self-serving episode ever, I present to you the little label that thought it good, the one that flew too close to the sun on vinyl wings, the most failing-ist ska label around... Grandpa's Casino Recordings... the label that I ran... into the ground. Actually, it wasn't all that bad, in fact, the songs are pretty damn good, all the bands were top tier! So yeah, I had good instincts! And we started w/ a Kickstarter and earned the cash to make seven 7" records, and we made them all and everyone seemed pleased, so you know... yay. So why no more releases? Well, see, this is where business comes in. The idea was to make some more copies of those records past the Kickstarter to sell and raise cash for more 7" records from more bands... well... that didn't work out and I still have a closet full of these records... quality records... but 7 years on, I can admit, I totally over-reached and fell on my face. In the end, hell, I got 7 more great records out into the world, releases I'll stand behind. And hey, I still have some for sale, hit me up! 00:00 - the Shifters - It's Been Too Long (the Big Ska Gamble: July 7" '12) 04:18 - the Action League - Space Attack (the Big Ska Gamble: August 7" '12) 07:41 - the Georgetown Orbits feat. As a matter of principle and as a matter of keeping this show as evergreen as possible from week to week, I actually try had to not make shows that are themed around holidays or other events. And if I do, I try had to make it not so obvious. And then we have this... so yeah... look at those titles and you're all like "Yup! Halloween episode alright!" but is it really? Could I have dropped this episode at any time and would it make you think "Halloween-ish?" I guess that is up for debate. I'd say entirely possible, but I've been wrong, oh so many times before! At the very least, I hope you truly enjoy this episode, as I hope you enjoy every episode! 00:00 - Stop the Presses - Dead Man's Party (Money in the Bank '19) 04:17 - Ultima Caida - Twilight Ska (Easygrooves vol. 1 comp '13) 07:37 - the Seattlelites - the Thing (the Thing! So BIB Records and DVS Media are two different record labels... but they seem to be a bit intertwined. A handful of albums seemingly came out around the same time on each label, both operated seemingly out of the Boston area and they co-released at least one ska compilation. In the end, I don't know the true story behind them (and I think that I'll probably be finding out from the slightly older, or more "in-the-know" ska crowd as soon as I publish this) ...but I do know this, and this is the important part, they both put out some killer ska music! 00:00 - Bim Skala Bim - Skeleton (Eyes & Ears '95) 03:06 - Steady Earnest - Please Go Away (Out of Line '93) 06:15 - Dion Knibb & the Agitators - Caribbean Eskimo (Driving Me Mad '98) 09:10 - the infamous SHOELESS JOE - Back On Up (diversionary tactics '00) 13:02 - Johnny Socko - Madame Blavatsky (Oh, I do Hope it's Roast Beef! Here's another one of those episodes where I play around with how far I can stretch the definition of "ska." If I was more interested in that concept I should've made the song sequence go from least to most in terms of ska, but I opted, as always, for song flow. Also, about half these tracks I've been trying to find a home for for months and I'm so glad I found the best episode to put them in! Stomp Records was founded in 1994 by Matt Collyer of The Planet Smashers and Jordan Swift of The Kingpins, so you know, it’s gotta pedigree of greatness. It was THEE Canadian ska label as far as I knew when I was younger. I literally thought every Canadian ska band put out a record on Stomp. Oh man, it's that time of year again in the States (or elsewhere as well, I'm a ska fan, not a historian of the world and its celebrations) where people head back to their small towns and take in a football game or whatever and the high school kids are all fretting about the big dance... yup, it's homecoming season! So yeah, find that old jacket that's been packed away for decades, blow the dust of the ludicrously expensive class ring, and maybe talk to some of the few cool people you went to school with... you know the ones, the ones in your "Screw the actual "cool" people" club! Cards out on the table, Grover is a boss record label! Founded in 1993 by Oswald Münnig, and distributing out of Germany they are as well known for issuing some rad albums but also licensing a lot of great ones too! They'll help bands from outside Germany and Europe get releases over there, they'll also issue albums on vinyl when a band's main label only plans on a CD release. I chose to focus on releases from the main Grover label and releases that were only on Grover or Grover released first, because they co-released and rereleased a lot of great stuff! It's an embarrassment of fantastic music! Needless to say, Grover has been hooking us all up with great music over and over! 00:00 - Dr. Ring-Ding & the Senior Allstars - Dandimite Ska (Dandimite! I loved making this episode. I love Asian Man Records. I love Mike Park. And I love all the acts that he got together to release music from. Asian Man Records was a big part of my early years of loving the ska sound, as I was already a fan of ska, but AMR really helped me branch out and learn about more bands. As a pretty skint kid, I didn't always have the cash to buy a ton of CDs and AMR kept it as cheap as he could and put out super cheap samplers to find out and hear new bands. I have so many AMR records on my shelf, ska, ska/punk and of other genres that this was an easy one to get together. I know I leaned a bit on the early years here, but I also wanted to show AMR is still holding up the ska banner and supporting those songs. Mike was a man of many tastes, and he always had good taste, so if it was ska or not I'd always check it out, and usually dig it! But for the topic at hand, we're focusing on the ska and ska/punk and you may or may not be surprised how much it isn't packed to the gills with ska/punk! So thank you to the small but mighty staff at Asian Man Records and thank you to Mike Park for all the past years and all the great ska releases to come! 00:00 - Link 80 - Verble Kint (17 Reasons '97) 01:57 - Unsteady - Rockstar (Nevergonnabearockstar) (Double or Nothing '97) 05:21 - Johnny Socko - Rumpy Pumpy (Full Trucker Effect '97) 08:37 - the Chinkees - Breath Out the Fight (Peace Through Music '99) 10:06 - Chris Murray - Steady Beat Convention (4-Trackaganza! I wish I could say that this episode is a trip down memory lane, that I'm just playing you all the cool shit I was into back in the late '90s, specifically the stuff from Stubborn Records... but alas, I ain't that cool. I don't know how Stubborn was such a blind spot to me for so long, but they were, and I really didn't start exploring their catalog until the mid-'00s. And man or man there was a wealth of fantastic stuff to find and listen to!
