In this episode, I look back at the International Ska Festival held at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA on Earth Day in April of 1990. The all day festival with a sold-out crowd estimated at 10,000, is a key event in the development of a uniquely American version of ska. First, the line-up included a number of leading American ska bands featured in my book including The Uptones, Gangster Fun and Let's Go Bowling – who were then at the forefront of the late 80s American ska scene.  Next, the size of the crowd and its passionate response also opened the eyes and ears of original 2-Tone musicians there that day to the fact that young Americans were passionate about ska music and that the U.S. was now a viable market for touring.  During one 12 hour festival, a sea change in the American ska scene occurs. Older bands have reached the end of their road but newer ones are there to take the torch.  And legends like Roland Alphonso of The Skatalites and Ranking Roger who are there that day are  so inspired by the experience and crowd response, that Alphonso reboots The Skatalites and  Ranking Roger forms Special Beat. And so, I think its fair to say that on April 21, 1990, ska finally arrived in America.

On this episode of the Ska Boom podcast, I tell the untold story of how a band of reggae obsessed kids from New Jersey  --The Terrorists -- backed a Jamaican ex-pat saxophonist who had helped found The Skatalites  -- Roland Alphonso. Together they helped create a short-lived but important ska and reggae scene at Max's Kansas City, which for a time was the punk rock club rival to CBGBs located less than a mile away. While Max's Kansas City was known as one of the birth places of American punk, its musical director Peter Crowley also had a passion for ska and reggae and began booking Sunday night reggae parties at the club beginning in 1976. His efforts helped to create a small scene and led him to discover The Terrorists, who along with The Shakers from Berkeley, CA and the Blue Riddim Band from Kansas City, MO are among the earliest American reggae bands. When members of the band discovered Roland Alphonso living in Brooklyn and convinced him to play with them, Crowley booked them as a double bill at Max's and based on the positive reception they received quickly took them into the studio to record albums he planned to release on the Max's Kansas City record label.  Sadly it was not be. Those recording were finally released last year as "Max's SKAnsas City" on the Jungle Records label in the UK and I was honored to be asked to write the liner notes for the album. The Terrorists and Crowley don't get the credit they deserve for their contribution to a uniquely American version of ska and reggae. Hopefully this audio documentary will help more people to hear their story.

With all of the craziness surrounding the global COVID-19 pandemic, I've found myself listening to a lot more ska. It's hard to put my finger on why, but I'd liken it to my favorite type of comfort food: not only is it good for the soul but it provides a bit of certainty in these uncertain times. To that end, I picked out a few upbeat tunes that I'm hoping will help provide at least a small distraction. Stay safe out there, and keep washing your hands! 00:00 - the KING LION - Skatman (Blank '19) 03:06 - the Kubricks - Criminals (Criminals '20) 05:51 - Roland Alphonso w/ the Skatalites feat. Building on Jim's picks, I added the new single from the Kubricks and the closing track from the Operators. I had the pleasure of meeting Jim and his WCSS co-star at the Jump Up Records 25th Anniversary show a few years back, and I couldn’t be happier then, and I couldn’t be happier now that they’re still in the game creating their show! If you're new to On Target then this episode is a great way to get a taste of what Mod Marty does here: 7", analogue vinyl is spun at 45rpms for about an hour a week. The idea is to explore all the musical types from the mid 1950s through to the early 1970s that shaped Rock and Soul for the years that followed. From New Breed, Popcorn and Doo Wop to Ska, Northern Soul and Maximum RnB. If you don't know what those terms mean then stick with us and we'll guide you from the roots, up the tree, to the labyrinth of branches that grew the music of the present day... Pop withstanding. After graduation he stumbled on Kes Chin and there he met Lester Sterlin, Keith Studdart, Winston Turner and Rupert Bent. These musicians would continue to be a part of his musical journey. He then went to CarlosMalcolm and the Afro Jamaican Rhythms. There he recorded songs like Rucumbine, Run For Cover and a mento medley, all with Carlos. Lloyd Mason – Jamaican Pre-Ska - Bass, Flute, Oboe, Piccolo The Val Bennett orchestra was playing dance music at a house party on Lloyd Mason’s street (7th Street in Greenwich Town) and a five year old Lloyd snuck out of the house to listen to the orchestra and he stayed there all night long. “Thats where I belong and I believe that’s where my music started – right there.” In 1945 at age ten, Lloyd was living with his mother and became unruly. Soon, his father came to get him and brought him to Stony Hill School. Lloyd’s father served in the Jamaican Army with the bandmaster and arranged for this move in order to teach Lloyd a trade or to learn music. Lloyd was not put into music immediately. He was taken to learn shoe-making. Six months later, the bandmaster came to speak with him and examined Lloyd’s fingers and his mouth, handed him a six-hole fife and said, “You’re going to learn this.” Bass player, Cluett Johnson’s brother was also a youth at Stony Hill School and he played the piccolo. Cluett’s brother taught Lloyd the fife. Roland Alphonso was also at Stony Hill and was playing the slide drum. Despoite his young age, Lloyd became accomplished at the flute in playing with Stony Hill Boy’s Band. Over at the Jamaican Military Band, a man named Spud Murphy was the drum major and the flute and piccolo player. As it came time for Spud Murphy to retire, The Military Band was challenged as it had no trained members to play the fife. None could read, write, or play the fife. To address this need, the Bandmaster for the Military Band spoke with the bandmaster at Stony Hill about Lloyd’s move to the Military Band. There was no audition for Lloyd Mason after Spud Murphy left. It was obvious who had the ability to fit the role. The fellow band members began to call him “Spuddy” or “Boy Mason.” Lloyd was the youngest person in the Jamaican Military Band and was a “young hand.” Marjorie Whylie (well known educator and Musical Director of The Jamaican National Dance Theatre Company) commented on the work of Mr. Mason, “Lloyd Mason is a well known bass player who can read music very well and is an absolute asset for musicians in his company.” _______________________________________________________ Selected Cuts: Off the “I Cover the Water Front” LP Port-O-Jam Records, Recorded at Federal Studios Featuring Cecil Lloyd (Piano), Lloyd Mason (Bass), Roland Alphonso (Tenor Saxophone), Lowell Morris (Drums), Don Drummond (Trombone) “Sometimes I Am Happy” “Loafers and Wristless” “Grooving With The Beat” ________________________________________________________ Off the “Jazz Jamaica” LP, Studio One Records, Recorded at Federal Studios Featuring Don Drummond (Trombone), Ernest Ranglin (Guitar), Cecil Lloyd (Piano), Carl McLeod (Drums), Billy Cooke (Trumpet), Tommy McCook (Tenor Saxaphone), Roland Alphonso (Tenor Saxophone), Lloyd Mason (Bass). “Calypso Jazz” “Serenade In Sound” (Featuring Don Drummond) b “The Answer” (Featuring Tommy McCook)
