In this rich intellectual history of the French-Jewish philosopher Emmanuel Levinas's Talmudic lectures in Paris, Ethan Kleinberg addresses Levinas's Jewish life and its relation to his philosophical writings while making an argument for the role and importance of Levinas's Talmudic lessons. Pairing each chapter with a related Talmudic lecture, Kleinberg uses the distinction Levinas presents between "God on Our Side" and "God on God's Side" to provide two discrete and at times conflicting approaches to Levinas's Talmudic readings. One is historically situated and argued from "our side" while the other uses Levinas's Talmudic readings themselves to approach the issues as timeless and derived from "God on God's own side." In Emmanuel Levinas's Talmudic Turn: Philosophy and Jewish Thought (Stanford UP, 2021), Kleinberg asks whether the ethical message and moral urgency of Levinas's Talmudic lectures can be extended beyond the texts and beliefs of a chosen people, religion, or even the seemingly primary unit of the self. Touching on Western philosophy, French Enlightenment universalism, and the Lithuanian Talmudic tradition, Kleinberg provides readers with a boundary-pushing investigation into the origins, influences, and causes of Levinas's turn to and use of Talmud. In this episode, Oden talks to Left Voice editor James Dennis Hoff and union organizer and college professor Jason Koslowski about how labor prepares for the second Trump term. They discuss the kinds of attacks on workers that we can expect from the new administration, and how neither Democrats nor Republicans offer anything to the working class. Most importantly, they explain why unions need to break from their failing approach of constraining themselves to laws that are meant to limit our power as the working class. In the coming period, class struggle will be decisive — and the labor movement needs to be ready to break laws, disobey leaders when we have to, and build power from the bottom up.  Learn More: - Is the Labor Movement Ready for Trump 2.0? - Class Struggle and the Relation of Forces Under Trump 2.0: Three Counter-Tendencies to the Rightward Shift - No, the NLRB Is Not on Our Side and Never Has Been - What Is Class Struggle Unionism? In the song “With God on Our Side”, Bob Dylan famously criticized the American predilection to confidently claim that our personal and political endeavors are touched by God, “Oh, my name, it ain't nothin', my age, it means less. The country I come from is called the Midwest. I's taught and brought up there, the laws to abide. And that the land that I live in has God on its side.”Now Dylan is no theologian, but he does highlight an interesting dilemma, and he causes us to ask some serious questions. What do we make of claims in politics and culture, that God favors a particular side or position? What makes these claims credible and what makes them dangerous? How does a Christian truly discern if God has providentially aligned himself with a man, a movement, and institution or a cause.Today on the Postscript we will be discussing this subject from the perspective of history – what can be learned from observing historic instances in which people, Christians in particular, have made the claim that God was on their side.To have this discussion, we have invited Dr. Thomas Kidd, Research Professor of Church History at Midwestern and the John and Sharon Yeats Endowed Chair of Baptist Studies. He has written numerous books on church history and Baptist history. Visit lfbi.org/learnmore

The First Amendment guarantees religious freedom and the separation of Church and State, basic tenets of American democracy which conservative think-tank the Heritage Foundation is intent on undermining. Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, describes how the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 would upend military protocols to eliminate civilian oversight. He believes a dystopian future in which the rights of racialized and marginalized groups are denied would be in store under a second Trump presidency.  TranscriptListenDonateSubscribeGuestMusic Talia BaroncelliHi, I'm Talia Baroncelli, and you're watching theAnalysis.news. I'll shortly be joined by Mikey Weinstein, the founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. We'll be speaking about Project 2025 and the implications it has for the U.S. military. If you'd like to support the work that we do, you can go to our website, theAnalysis.news, and hit the donate button at the top right corner of the screen. Make sure you're on our mailing list; that way, you're always up to date every time a new episode is published. You can like and subscribe to the show on YouTube or on other podcast streaming services such as Apple or Spotify. See you in a bit with Mikey. Project 2025 is a lengthy policy agenda authored by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative and Christian nationalist think tank. Investigative outlet ProPublica recently obtained Project 2025 private training videos, which involve several former Trump officials. This corroborates the connection between former President Trump and the Heritage Foundation. One of the videos features Bethany Kozma, a former Deputy Chief of Staff at USAID during the Trump administration. In this video, she discusses Project 2025's opposition to legislation trying to mitigate the effects of climate change. She reads from page 364 of Project 2025's Mandate for Leadership, which states that "In the name of combating climate change, policies have been used to create an artificial energy scarcity that will require trillions of dollars in new investment, supported with taxpayer subsidies, to address a problem that government and special interests themselves created." They don't perceive climate change or carbon-intensive industries as posing a threat to society or to the environment but as a set of policies meant to create energy scarcity and benefit a certain segment of the elite. Joining me to discuss these issues is Mikey Weinstein. He is the founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring the constitutional right of religious freedom for the U.S. Armed Forces. He is also a lawyer and a former Air Force officer and served as White House Legal Counsel to the Reagan Administration. He also served as first general counsel to Ross Perot, the Texas billionaire who ran for president twice. He's the author of several books, including Was God on Our Side and No Snowflake in an Avalanche. It's great to have you again, Mikey. Mikey WeinsteinThanks, Talia. I'm looking forward to it as well. Talia BaroncelliBefore we get into Project 2025, can you explain to our viewers what you do at the Military Religious Freedom Foundation? Mikey WeinsteinAbsolutely. We are a weapon, and we've been fighting Christian nationalism and calling it out before anybody else did, that I'm aware of, going back to the early 2000s. Our job is to protect the U.S. Constitutionally mandated wall, separating Church and State in the technologically most lethal organization ever created by humankind, which is the U.S. military: the Marine Corps, Navy, Army, Air Force, and Space Force. We have clients in all 18 national security agencies. Some are well-known, like the FBI, the CIA, the DIA, etc. We have clients in the U.S. Coast Guard, which is not the DOD; that's the Department of Homeland Security, and even the U.S. Maritime Service,

Our Side of the Wall: Patriotic and Inspirational Poetry from an Unusual Perspective by Brian B. HawthorneOur Side of the Wall: Patriotic and Inspirational Poetry from an Unusual Perspective, is a collection of my poems that present a poet's eye view of what for many are common and ordinary occurrences. Think of yourself as water, a leaf, an apple -- an insect? Who knows, you might even find out how we built the pyramids. Author Bio: I didn't deliberately try to become a jack of all trades. It was just a matter of necessity, honest. After some college study, I was invited to join Uncle Sam and the boys. But that too was educational; they had things called rockets, radars, and computers, you see. Then after that I learned how to repair machines on a small scale, and I stuck with that until the mechanical parts became replaced by electronic devices. Gradual learning is probably better. Working in the home-building trades I added electric work, plumbing, all kinds of construction. All very helpful, especially with carpentry. There were in that mix the occasional opportunity to do some teaching as well. And then I took up writing poetry and science fiction stories. But I always thought publishing would be easier than this. https://www.amazon.com/Our-Side-Wall-Inspirational-Perspective/dp/B0BL9NY2TG/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1670533559&sr=1-1www.BrianBHawthorne.comhttps://www.litprime.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/31623wellslp.mp3

Artificial Intelligence, artificial ingredients, artificial Christmas trees... Where do we draw the line?! Come along with me down the rabbit hole, as I explore the capabilities of new technologies, such as: Lensa, the A.I. portrait app, OpenAI's GPT3, and artificial Christmas trees from big box retailers. Does creating "art" require sentience from the artist? If a computer can create beauty beyond human capabilities, but has no concept of what that even means, does it still hold the same creative value? If a flawless artistic masterpiece is painted by A.I., is it the creative equivalent of a plastic Christmas tree? Can we even call it art? Is A.I. art hollow like a dead log? Does it inspire and bring life or does it lack the critical zest of a human touch? Are we doomed to a future filled with new pictures, but lacking true art? Will A.I. improve until it rivals the scriptures and eventually even has heart?Humans are masterful creators; almost god-like in our ability to bring something from the world of thought into the world of 3D reality. We are made in God's own image. Creation is what we do, and until now, no other animal species in the history of this planet has done it better. But if we handover our creative tasks to A.I. are we destined to be a species of uncultured swine doomed to walk this Earth void of purpose beyond our roles as valued consumers. Should we be purists when it comes to culture and traditions so that we aren't at-risk of losing them to the passage of time?If we allow technology to dilute our culture with fake art and fake Christmas trees, what's next? Will we lose the very essence of what it means to be human? Will we still advance as a species if we try to outsource the powers of invention? Many episodes ago, your hosts skipped a whole clause of the First Amendment for good reason - to accommodate their first guest!  Fellow podcaster Zane Relethford joins Dan and J.T. to discuss the influence of religion in politics. Zane is a vital part of the Fancybat Podcast Network, of which The Cocktail Party Congress is a proud part!  You can hear more from Zane (and many more) on The Cartoncast and Empowered! Zane was kind enough to provide our featured cocktail: Jesus Juice!  To drink along at home, mix together equal parts red wine and Dr. Pepper on the rocks.  Dan and J.T. used a Malbec per this website's advice, but Zane kept it sacrilicious and went with Manischewitz. As always, please drink (and think) responsibly!  In Vino Veritas! Enjoy this Roy Moore spokesman's cognitive dissonance at hearing that the Bible is not the mandated platform for oaths of office. Or check out the documentary "With God on Our Side" to find out why Jimmy Carter was simultaneously a dream and nightmare for the then-nascent Evangelical Right. Created and presented by J.T. Andrews and Dan Caves.  Edited by Dan Caves. 18th century scientist & philosopher,  Emanuel Swedenborg, wrote much about the afterlife during his 30 years in contact with the spirit world.  Our guest, Curtis Childs, is an expert on Swedenborg's studies, and is passionate about relating these principals to our current times. Although Swedenborg died in 1772, rest assured that we can have a great life by watching Curtis' phenomenal program,“Swedenborg and Life”on YouTube and applying these principals to our lives. In this episode, Curtis and I have an AMAZING conversation including: Don't Believe Everything You Think, The Grand Human, Ending Suffering, The Angels by Our Side and The Purpose of Life. This fascinating episode leaves me grateful for Curtis Childs and Swedenborg.Curtis Childs is the creator, producer and host of a weekly, Monday night (8pm EST) webcast called “Swedenborg and Life” that airs to over 29,000 subscribers AND some of his videos have reached over 300,000 views! Topics covered are "the afterlife," angels and spirits, near-death experiences, God, spirituality, and more, and Curtis does a great job balancing these faith-based topics with evidence-based research from subject experts. For all of us modern-day spiritual growth seekers…this is an awesome show!Learn more at www.youtube.com/offTheLeftEye and www.swedenborg.com
