I was first introduced to Cecile Simmons from her essay on being an expert on wellness misinformation and yet falling down a rabbit hole of social media fueled wellness trends even as she knew she was being duped. During the peak of the Tuberculosis pandemic, white nurses at Sea View Hospital in Staten Island, New York quit because they refused to care for Tuberculosis patients. As a result, the hospital recruited over 300 Black nurses throughout the country. As a result of their heroic act, these nurses were called the Black Angels. In one day, nine Chinese nationals were arrested, charged, or pleaded guilty in cases tied to U.S. national security. One of them, a Chinese hacker caught in Italy, is accused of stealing critical U.S. COVID-19 research during the pandemic. We have the details on the investigation. Steve Yates, senior fellow of national security policy at the Heritage Foundation, said, "It sort of reinforces the idea that this was an operation—the [Chinese Communist Party] was not only poisoning the world, particularly the U.S., but also monitoring how we would react and the health impacts on the target." A Chinese student with a military research background is pleading guilty to visa fraud. He hid key details about his education to get around U.S. visa restrictions. Europe is facing a rise in Chinese covert operations. Ukrainian authorities arrested two Chinese men accused of trying to transfer classified missile system documents to Beijing. The United States is moving to block foreign adversaries—especially China—from buying American farmland. It's about protecting both the food supply and national security, officials say.

Today, we're looking at a viral incident that has seen alleged foreigners gathering to gawk at swimmers in a Quebec public pool. Plus, violent far-left protester Deana Sherif, a regular attendee of protests, has been found guilty of using a noise device. Independent journalist Caryma Sa'd joins the show to discuss her encounters with Sherif and her subsequent conviction. “Very often, doctors try to suppress what they feel or don't even have the vocabulary to describe their emotions,” says Professor Alicja Galazka of the University of Silesia, an observation based on decades of work with physicians to enhance their emotional intelligence and resilience. Galazka, a psychotherapist, psychologist, lecturer and coach, believes this deficit is rooted in part in a lack of instruction in the internal and external psychological dimensions of being a medical provider. “There is not enough space created in medical school for teaching and training students about how to deal with their own stress and all of the skills connected to building relationships with patients,” she tells host Michael Carrese. Those same skills are also critical to working effectively as a member of a care team, which is an increasingly common arrangement in hospitals and clinics. Galazka employs simulations, dramatic role-playing, mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and other methods in her work with an eye on increasing the emotional agility and sensitivity of her trainees and clients.
