    5. Battling the Smallpox Pandemic: Dr. Bond and Washington's Strategic Inoculation Author: Patrick O'Donnell Book Title: The Indispensables: The Diverse Soldier Mariners Who Shaped the Country, Formed the Navy, and Rowed Washington across the Delaware The Revolutionary War unfolded under the shadow of a smallpox pandemic. The virus devastated Marblehead after being brought in by fishing ships. Initial quarantine efforts failed, but Dr. Nathaniel Bond promoted inoculation. This dangerous 18th-century technique involved intentionally introducing a small amount of the virus into the body to create antibodies. Patriot efforts to establish an inoculation hospital on remote Cat Island were met with political violence when Loyalists organized a mob to storm the jail and torch the hospital while people were still inside. Later, following the Trenton and Princeton campaigns, the virus became a catastrophic threat, infecting and killing nearly 20% of Washington's army. Recognizing that the virus could destroy his fighting capability, Washington made the strategic decision to order Dr. Bond to establish inoculation hospitals. Bond set up these facilities and personally conducted inoculations, a move considered Washington's greatest strategic decision. Dr. Bond, who had once been ostracized for treating British soldiers, ultimately died as a result of his service to the Continental Army, having saved it through inoculation.

In this episode hosted by Kirsten Tyrrel, Brooklyn Grotte shares her journey from hustling $200 photo shoots to building a luxury portrait studio and thriving coaching business. She opens up about going $20K into debt to launch her studio just before the pandemic hit, how she shifted to premium packages with full-service experiences, and why Meta ads became the game-changer that scaled both her photography and coaching programs. What we discuss with Brooklyn: + Starting out in photography + Going $20K into debt + Pandemic studio shutdown + Transition to luxury portraiture + Raising prices and packaging + Adding client closet + styling + Using Meta ads for growth + Scaling to six figures + Coaching other photographers + Building a brand + personal identity Thank you, Brooklyn! We're live at Skift with a builder proving the future isn't generic search; it's purpose-built marketplaces for travelers who already know their stay type—a lake house. I'm Zach, and today I'm joined by David Ciccarelli, co-founder of lake.com. After a startup exit during the pandemic, David and his wife (and co-founder) Stephanie bought a lake house—he grew up on Lake Superior, she on Lake Erie. A few months in, they hosted a 25-person family reunion to put the place to use—and that's when the opportunity snapped into focus: the nearby hotel was priced for peak season, and the close-enough rentals you'd want for a shared trip weren't surfacing. Conversations with local trades who service waterfront homes confirmed the pattern—plenty of beautiful, generational places sitting unused most of the year.   Instead of optimizing for everyone, David optimized for the traveler who already knows the experience they want. He acquired lake.com, built discovery around thousands of lakes and parks, and set a simple rule—on the water or within 15 minutes—so results stay on-vibe. On the back end, he scaled supply by integrating directly with property management systems so calendars and pricing stay in sync; on the business side, he kept incentives clean with shared success (a flat commission only when hosts get booked). The result: a fast-growing, lake-first inventory measured in the tens of thousands. In this conversation, you'll hear: How that reunion turned a personal headache into a thematic OTA Why curated, stay-type discovery beats generic search in a GenAI world The domain-as-distribution bet behind lake.com The PMS integration play that actually scales supply (and prevents double bookings) What “within 15 minutes of the water” does for expectations, filters, and conversion   Explore Lake.com at, you guested it... www.lake.com ;) Connect with David on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidciccarelli/   Behind the Stays is brought to you by Journey — a first-of-its-kind loyalty program that brings together an alliance of the world's top independently owned and operated stays and allows travelers to earn points and perks on boutique hotels, vacation rentals, treehouses, ski chalets, glamping experiences and so much more. Welcome to a compelling conversation on Trending in Education, where we explore how innovative thinking and technology can transform public education. In this episode, Mike Palmer talks with Michelle Vilchez, CEO, and Sean Michael Hardy, Vice President of National Organizing and Advocacy, from Innovate Public Schools. They discuss their groundbreaking work in empowering parents and leveraging artificial intelligence to create a new tool called AI-EP, a project developed in collaboration with Northeastern University's Burnes Center for Social Change. Why You Should Listen: Empowering Parents: This episode highlights how a nonprofit organization is shifting power to parents, particularly those from marginalized communities, by giving them the tools and platforms to advocate for their children's education. AI for Good: You'll hear about a practical and inspiring use of AI that addresses a real-world problem and closes equity gaps, rather than exacerbating them. Community-Led Innovation: The conversation showcases a powerful model of "co-design," where tech developers, educators, and community members work together to create solutions that are both effective and sustainable. Key Takeaways: Innovate Public Schools is a movement, not a network. Michelle and Sean clarify that their organization's mission is to mobilize families to demand high-quality schools for their children, not to operate charter schools. They focus on campaigns for black literacy, special education, and high-impact tutoring. AI-EP addresses a critical need. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is often a dense, 50-page legal document that can be intimidating for parents, especially those who don't speak English or have low reading comprehension. The AI-EP tool translates the IEP into a parent's native language and allows them to ask questions, effectively serving as a chatbot to help them understand and engage with the plan. Collaboration is key to innovation. The AI-EP project was a collaborative effort involving Innovate Public Schools, Northeastern University, and the Learning Tapestry. By bringing together tech developers and parents, they created a tool that has had a transformational impact on users. Parent advocacy drives policy change. Innovate's parent leaders have not only influenced local policy but also co-authored legislation. Their advocacy led to the passage of California's Senate Bill 445, which mandates that IEP documents be translated into the 10 most common languages across the state, benefiting over 800,000 students. The model is replicable. Michelle and Sean stress that their goal is not to be "gatekeepers" of this innovation, but to share the model so it can be replicated across the nation to address a variety of educational challenges. They believe that organizing around education is crucial because it is the "building block" for everything else in life, from economic stability to generational wealth. Don't miss this conversation. Listen in to learn how Innovate Public Schools is harnessing the power of community and technology to create a more equitable and participatory education system. Comets may be one of the most underrated influences on everything from religion and superstition to health. From the ancient world until contemporary times, the comet was and remains a harbinger, an omen, a portent of upheaval and change. It's not just a celestial sign either, as scientific analysis of a comet's composition may help to explain our history of disease outbreaks around the world, and thus the nature of  wars and the deaths of empires or kings that are associated with the appearance of these objects in the sky. Furthermore, the comet is a carrier of the water above the firmament just as it is a macrocosmic sperm searching for a planetary egg. The appearance of three interstellar objects in the last decade, including 3I Atlas, also share a relationship with religious prophecy and disease. Oumuamua was the first messenger, Borisov the fighter, names associated with John the Baptists and Jesus, making Atlas the third part of this holy trinity. Borisov also was discovered in August 2019, making a close pass to earth in December of the same year, just in time to herald the COVID pandemic. The gasses and chemicals contained in a comet, when injected into earth's atmosphere, have the ability to make us sick on a wide scale - see the Black Death. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Extending our healthy years isn't just about eating well and exercising — it's also about the systems around us. Social policies, public health programs, and access to care all play a huge role in how long and how well we live. In this episode, we look at what it takes to improve health for everyone, everywhere. We each have personal choices to make, but what about the bigger picture?Dr. Tyler Evans is a physician, infectious disease specialist, and author of Pandemics, Poverty and Politics: Decoding the Social and Political Drivers of Pandemics from Plague to Covid-19.In a wide-ranging conversation with Peter Bowes, Dr. Evans connects stalled life expectancy to weakened safety nets, unequal access to healthcare, and the cracks exposed by recent global crises. He emphasizes practical action — meeting people where they are, funding prevention, and rebuilding systems that can spot and stop health threats early. Drawing on his experience from Los Angeles's Skid Row to global epidemic response, Evans calls for a non-partisan, evidence-driven approach that focuses on those most at risk — because when the most vulnerable communities thrive, everyone benefits.----This podcast is supported by affiliate arrangements with a select number of companies. “Probably the most exciting thing I've seen in gene therapy over the last ten years is we now have a lot of tools for selective delivery, which will hopefully make treatments more safe and a lot more successful,” says Dr. Jessica Duis, a geneticist and pediatrician focused on the management of individuals with complex, rare disorders. Dr. Duis, who has worked on several gene therapies that are now approved or progressing through the accelerated approval pathway, is currently VP of Clinical Development at GondolaBio, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing therapeutics for genetic diseases. As you'll learn in this Year of the Zebra episode with host Lindsey Smith, Dr. Duis is encouraged by other recent advances in genetic technology as well, and thinks momentum will grow as breakthrough treatments emerge. “I think we're hopefully going to continue to see companies that are working in rare disease be more successful and really drive how regulators think about making decisions in terms of bringing treatments to patients. I think we're at the tip of the iceberg in terms of the future of truly transformational therapies.”  This wide ranging conversation also explores Dr. Duis' team approach to patient care, her work on clinical endpoints, the importance of patient communities, and her book series, Rare Siblings Stories.Mentioned in this episode:GondolaBioRareDiseaseDocElsevier Healthcare Hub on Rare DiseasesRare Sibling Stories If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. On this episode of Bringin' it Backwards, Adam Lisicky sits down with Henry Cox, frontman of Boston Manor, for an honest, no-frills conversation about how a kid from Blackpool, England went from drumming in jazz band and playing school musicals to leading one of modern rock's most dynamic acts. Henry opens up about his unlikely entry into music—being the kid without a musical family, drawn into the world of drums and early 2000s hip hop via grainy basketball highlight reels. From there, he shares stories of forming Boston Manor, roughing it on early UK tours, and that surreal moment when a record deal with Pure Noise Records opened the door to international touring—including America's legendary Warped Tour. Henry dives deep into the making of Boston Manor's new album, explaining the personal growth (and even parenthood) that shaped the ambitious double album, with themes that travel from emotional darkness into the hope of new beginnings. He also offers invaluable advice for aspiring artists—stressing the importance of taking time to find your sound, not rushing to release music for the sake of the internet, and focusing on what truly moves you. You'll hear why Boston Manor's music has evolved from teenage experiments to arena-ready anthems and why authenticity, experimentation, and resilience have been at the heart of Henry's journey. If you're looking for an honest peek behind the scenes of a band making it work—triumphs, setbacks, and all—this episode's for you. So grab your headphones, hit subscribe, and hear what it really means to bring it backwards with Boston Manor's Henry Cox.

Episode 615: From Red Tape to Real Help: Emily Williams Knight of the Texas Restaurant Association on Fixing the Squeeze

Wil  sits down with Emily Williams Knight, CEO of the Texas Restaurant Association (TRA), which represents 58,000 restaurants, 1.4M employees, and nearly $137B in annual sales. Emily explains how the TRA protects a pro-business regulatory environment so operators can focus on guests and teams, not red tape. She shares a pandemic origin story: brand-new in the role, she built a “war room,” forged bipartisan relationships, helped shape PPP/RRF fixes, and pushed for one of the earliest statewide re-opens, becoming a nightly “north star” for Texas restaurants.Today's headwinds: uncertainty across demand patterns, labor/immigration constraints disrupting the full “plant-it to plate-it” chain, protein inflation (beef unlikely to ease until ~2028 due to shrunken herds, import frictions, and disease risk), and looming seafood import tightening. Emily flags swipe fees (3–4%+), opaque delivery chargebacks/penalties, and rising insurance/rent/cleaning costs that small operators can't keep passing to guests. TRA's approach: advocate first by collaboration (then legislate if needed), and deliver practical operator wins—e.g., a $9/mo Teladoc program (including mental health) for employees/families, childcare policy via an Employers for Child Care task force (8 of 9 bills passed), and exploring lower-cost payments (e.g., stablecoin rails) to challenge card duopolies.Throughout, Emily underscores that independents are community infrastructure - first to show up in disasters, central to local identity - and urges owners to engage with their state associations for advocacy, education, and scaled benefits. Her north star: be courageous and pragmatic - simple solutions to complex problems - so small restaurants can survive the current squeeze and keep delivering hospitality.Key Takeaways TRA at scale: 58k restaurants, 1.4M employees, ~$137B sales—largest private-sector employer in Texas. Advocacy matters: TRA blocked well-intended but risky mandates (e.g., restaurant staff administering Narcan) by educating lawmakers. Bipartisan playbook: Results come from working both sides of the aisle and building trust before crises hit. Pandemic “war room”: Early reopen, nightly updates, and PPP/RRF fixes made TRA a lifeline for operators. Core problem = uncertainty: Demand patterns, costs, and supply reliability are too volatile for 4–6% margin businesses. Labor/immigration shock: Shortages ripple from farm to kitchen; near-term ask is work permits for long-time, law-abiding workers. Protein pressure: Beef relief unlikely until ~2028 due to herd rebuild cycles, import constraints, and disease risks; seafood supply faces stricter import rules. Cost traps: Swipe fees (often 3–4%+) and delivery chargebacks/penalties are eroding margins; TRA is pushing transparency and policy fixes. Practical benefits: TRA offers a $9/mo Teladoc (incl. mental health) for employees/families and is advancing childcare solutions to improve retention. Independents = community infrastructure: They fuel local identity and disaster response—consumer support and association engagement are vital.

Keir Starmer made huge news over the weekend with his dystopian announcement that the United Kingdom would now be requiring everyone within their realm to possess digital ID as a prerequisite to obtaining employment. But as you'll soon see, the entire European Union is in the process of making digital ID mandatory in 2026. Can the United States be far behind? Nope.“And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.” Revelation 13:16,17 (KJB)On this episode of the Prophecy News Podcast, today is Day 2,023 of 15 Days To Flatten The Curve, and all the seeds that were planted during the global Pandemic are now beginning to spout and bear fruit. As it turns out, so says Keir Starmer, the only way to stop the problem of rampant illegal immigration is to issue every citizen a digital ID. Now you know why Europe and America were intentionally flooded with illegals. Of course, digital ID is also a cornerstone item in the platform known as Agenda 2030 from the United Nations. A continent-wide digital identity wallet is planned for a 2026 rollout. And as scary as that all seems, it's just the tip of an end times iceberg that we are all about to run aground on. The Mark of the Beast System is here, and the mark itself is being prepared.

In this explosive edition of Joe Untamed, we dive deep into the latest court revelations in Tina Peters' case, including testimony from a Venezuelan government official confirming that the same election system used in Venezuela—and admitted to being manipulated—has been implemented in Colorado. We'll break down the implications for election security and what it means for American democracy, alongside key commentary on the escalating rhetoric and violence affecting our political landscape. Joining us to navigate these complex issues is Kenneth S. Abramowitz, Co-Founder of NGN Capital, Chairman of Citizens for National Security, and author of The Multifront War: Defending America From Political Islam, China, Russia, Pandemics, and Racial Strife. With decades of experience in finance, healthcare, and national security, Abramowitz brings unmatched insight into the intersection of international policy, domestic threats, and the evolving balance of free speech in America. He'll weigh in on everything from the Charlie Kirk assassination, domestic terrorism, and the role of social media in shaping today's volatile environment, to America's foreign policy challenges and the Ukraine-Russia conflict. We'll also tackle the surge in politically motivated violence and the left's escalating rhetoric, highlighted by JD Vance and Senator Ted Cruz's recent statements on ICE and law enforcement. Backed by compelling research on political ideology and mental health from Tufts University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, we'll examine how ideological stressors and public messaging influence behavior. Don't miss this critical conversation that connects election integrity, national security, and the fight for truth in a polarized America.

With nearly one in ten newborns in the US requiring care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the importance of NICUs has never been more clear. On today's episode of Raise the Line, we're shining a light on the extraordinary world of NICUs with Lindsay Howard, a veteran nurse with over 17 years of experience caring for premature and critically ill infants. She currently works in a Level IV NICU at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, one of the most advanced neonatal units in the country. “We call ourselves ‘the ER of the neonate world' because we're never full. We have to make space no matter what comes in off the street, and at the biggest medical center in the world, we see all the things,” she explains. In this enlightening conversation with host Lindsey Smith, Howard describes how advances in medicine have made it possible to provide more types of care for younger and smaller babies, creating a need for NICU nurses to develop subspecialties. In her case, Howard is on a dedicated team that handles the placement and maintenance of all central line IVs, and has earned certifications in neonatal and pediatric chemotherapy and biotherapies. “We see babies that we may not have seen before being born with cancerous tumors who need chemotherapy to try and eliminate it, or just give them more time with their family.” This is a revealing look inside the workings of a top tier NICU where you'll learn about approaches to care that support healthy neurodevelopment, how clinical staff handle the emotional challenges of the job, and how her own experience as a mother with twins needing NICU care impacted her work.  Mentioned in this episode:Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. However, back in Episode 5 is when we do this first mention and where our mission on the podcast was to bring awareness to board games beyond those found at big box stores. That was on February 12, 2013. Time marches on and we find ourselves with a new entry using the Pandemic system with the LOTR: Fate of the Fellowship. Mr. Leacock has done an incredible job with this one. In my opinion, this brings the base goodness of the Pandemic series to the LOTR world and then ramps it up a few notches. To be honest, it might be a little too hard at times. But who cares, play it again and think of the feeling you will have when you destroy the ring. We also have some slight dissension in the ranks at RDTN where one does like a game as much as someone else and we have a solid discussion on why. This doesn't mean that the game isn't good, just that there is a difference of opinion on what some people like versus what others like. The Wondrous Museum is an engine builder that plays very fast and has solid decision making for which cards to play and how to use the runes that activate the cards. Leaders if a two person duel game that shrinks down the board to where players are using special moves by their champions to allow them to capture the other person leaders. Your champions are never removed from the board, so it is all about positioning while maintaining a solid defense for your leader.
