The worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is several years behind us, but many Minnesotans are still living with its consequences in the form of long COVID. Long COVID is a chronic condition that can last for weeks, months or even years after a COVID infection. A major symptom is extreme fatigue, and other symptoms can include everything from blood pressure changes and brain fog to joint pain and depression. MPR News host Angela Davis talks with a doctor and a public health leader about long COVID and other other post-infection chronic conditions that doctors are only beginning to understand. Welcome to the eighteenth episode of our ongoing series: Fascism On Film. Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events.On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers sit down to discuss Jean-Luc Godard's sci fi tech noir film Alphaville, starring Eddie Constantine, Anna Karina and Akim Tamiroff. The film was released in 1965 and is something we would consider to be some of Godard's best work. It showcases the strengths and also some of the weaknesses of the iconic French New Wave filmmaker. Eddie Constantine plays the character of Lemmy Caution, a character created by English author Peter Cheyney. The character featured in many of Cheyney's books as an FBI Agent and then as a private detective. Lemmy travels to the futuristic city of Alphaville. He is a private-eye posing as a journalist. His mission is to find the missing agent Henry Dickson and to convince a Professor von Braun to come with him. The professor is actually Leonard Nosferatu and he has created a powerful computer/AI called Alpha 60. Alpha 60 has conceived the inhuman dystopian society of Alphaville. Aspects like love, conscience, poetry and even human emotion have been banished and words are systematically eliminated from the dictionary. Lemmy is assisted by Natacha von Braun, the professor's daughter. Or many if you're a big horror nut, like Anders.On this episode, Anders reviews and discusses Sir Alfred Hitchcock's classic and influential film from 1960: Psycho. Much like Peeping Tom released earlier that year, Psycho was one of those thrillers/horror films that helped lay the groundwork for what would become the slasher genre. John Carpenter's Halloween, for instance, owes a lot to Psycho. Along with talking about how Psycho was a tremendous film that left an enduring mark on cinema, Anders looks at the three sequels featuring Anthony Perkins's classic character Norman Bates. And the 1998 Psycho remake that was directed by Gus Van Sant. An almost shot-for-shot remake of the Hitchcock film. It uses the same Joseph Stefano screenplay and the same shot compositions. A truly cinematic experiment gone wrong. Nevertheless, the original Psycho was a groundbreaking film that subverted expectations and challenged the restrictions of the time, laid down by the Hays Code. A very taboo breaking film. Welcome to the seventeenth episode of our ongoing series: Fascism On Film. Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events.On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers sit down to discuss Archie Mayo's film Black Legion, starring one of their favourite actors Humphrey Bogart. This was in the early days of Bogart's career, and he wouldn't blow up as an actor and as a movie star until 1941 with High Sierra. He reunites with Archie Mayo who directed him in The Petrified Forest, for this hard-hitting drama set in the Midwestern parts of the United States. Frank Taylor (Bogart) is a blue collar factory worker who is expecting a promotion any day now. When he is passed over for a younger Polish immigrant, it takes a toll on Frank. He becomes bitter and mean. He is influenced to join a secret hate group called the Black Legion. Being part of the group alienates everyone from Frank. His family and friends. It all builds to a tragic conclusion. The Black Legion were a faction of the Klu Klux Klan. They were active in the 1920s and 1930s, they grew to prominence in the Great Depression. The film is based on the real life kidnapping and murder of a Work Progress Administration organiser: Charles S. The Finance Minister believes the report on the Reserve Bank's performance during Covid affirms decisions made by the current Government. An external review of Bank's Covid monetary policy during the pandemic finds it was right to cut the OCR early but was slow to react when the economy bounced back sooner than expected. Nicola Willis told Mike Hosking the results show the importance of the guardrails they implemented – having a single inflation-busting mandate and the change to voting to create more accountability. She believes the report matters as it also shows the Reserve Bank can keep getting better as long as it has an attitude of ongoing improvement. Limiting the side effects of cancer treatments has been an animating force in the field of oncology for many years, and there's been progress to report on that front, but what if you could target cancer tumors without using radiation or chemotherapy and instead generate heat from inside the tumor to kill cells? That's the quest of our guest today, Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green, whose promising research using lasers and nanoparticles to eliminate tumors received Breakthrough Device Designation from the FDA earlier this year. “The laser beam that we're using is low power like a laser pointer, and without activation by the laser, the nanoparticles are harmless. Both are targeted just at the site of the tumor so because we don't use systemic delivery, we avoid all of the systemic side effects,” she explains.Dr. Green is also the founder and president of the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation, named for an aunt who raised her and who died of cancer without pursuing curative treatment because of her fear of the side effects.
