Edition No147 | 26-05-2025 - Trump may be inferring that Putin has lost his mind and is behaving out of character with mindless violence. But Trump has already clearly abandoned the peace process and is well on the way to washing his hands of the war, the peace and Ukraine. By the way, Putin is not mad, and the current violence is totally characteristic of his regime. But Trump clearly is not partial to history, facts or evidence. We are in the realm of the goldfish memory, where history is what happened mere hours ago, or anything further back was a long time ago, and probably never happened anyway, to quote the title of David Satter's excellent book on Russia. Let's recap, for those suffering from the Trump goldfish memory syndrome: - Trump never once pressured Putin to stop the war against Ukraine. He never even raised the topic of a ceasefire in his recent conversations with him.- After his call with Putin Trump essentially abandoned his own promise to stop the war.- The two-hour conversation on May 19 was so warm, apparently that neither Trump nor Putin wanted to hang up first. Queue memes of Budanov cutting off the line.- European allies and the Ukrainian leadership felt that they had simply been left to hang out to dry, without explanation, without a strategic position – just silence.- The United States is no longer trying to be a mediator. All diplomatic initiatives have been put on hold.- Trump is now simply washing his hands of the matter and stepping aside.- After the conversation with Putin, Trump publicly told reporters that he had not even mentioned the missile strikes on civilians in Ukraine. These have of course intensified dramatically following the call, possibly because of Trump's appeasement. Ukraine accepted Trump's proposal for a comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire. Putin did not and has never given any indication of softening his demands that would allow a nascent peace process or negotiation to even begin. Edition No146 | 25-05-2025 - In a clear indication that peace is the last thing on Putin's mind, overnight on May 25th Russia attacked Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions with drones and missiles, in an attack that may constitute the largest of the war, and certainly the largest over several nights. The bombardment killed at least a dozen people including three children, according to local officials. Russia launched 69 missiles and 298 drones, according to Ukraine's Air Force.The attack coincides with Kyiv Day, a city holiday typically celebrated on the last Sunday in May and follows on from one of the heaviest Russian assaults on Kyiv throughout the full-scale war. The Ukrainian Air Force reported 45 cruise missiles were shot down by air defence systems and 266 drones neutralized. 22 locations recorded direct strikes. Kyiv was not the only place targeted or hit. She describes the Kremlin's propagandists as being in ebullient mood as they anticipate the disengagement of the US from mediating in the Ukraine conflict. This is what they wanted all along, and Trump is threatening to give them exactly what they were craving. Normalization on the world stage, and absolute impunity to continue the war. Don't look to the sterile public statements and press releases to understand the mind and mood of the Kremlin, states Julia Davis, but listen to its highly paid propagandists in the state-controlled TV studios. They are regularly briefed by the Kremlin's handlers on what they can and can't say, and the scripted narratives of TV discussions are highly choreographed to show the regime's views and aims, and where any internal doubts exist, the debate traces the outlines and boundaries of the potential directions under discussion. The May 19th phone conversation between Putin and Trump about a possible peace deal in Ukraine is a classic case in point. The US administration gave a positive, if distant view of a potential peace negotiation. Holding out a whisp of hope for future renewal of dialogue. The Russian take, on the other hand, was the same as it has always been. Russian state television repeatedly stated that Moscow has no interest in a ceasefire or peace — unless it amounts to Ukraine's full and unconditional capitulation. Russian film critic and journalist Ekaterina Barabash has penned an extraordinary article in the Kyiv Independent confirming what many realistic ‘Russia watchers' have suspected through most of the full-scale war. Most Russians ‘don't care about the war' she claims.----------This is not a story about so-called good Russians and bad Russians. I've always felt that was a very unhelpful concept, with little explanatory power or practical use. Are people who actively support the regime doing bad things – yes. Are people who think the war should stop yet perform jobs such as programming Russian FPV drones bad – well, yes. But they may not think of themselves as immoral or even complicit. Are those who are against the war but do not protest in Russia bad? Are those who live outside of Russia, work and live their quiet lives yet don't organise to oppose the regime bad? We could perhaps say the same about most people who don't protest the slaughter in Gaza, Sudan and innumerable other parts of the world. It's complicated. Are people who continue to live and pay taxes in Russia contributing to the slaughter in Ukraine bad? A friend alerted me to rumours swirling around Moscow of another potential threat to the life of Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. Perhaps that's not a surprise, given that his senseless war has caused upwards of a million Russian to be grievously wounded or lose their lives and trashed the economy. What is a surprise is that only one media publication I could find seems to have covered this story from this angle, despite the dramatic inferences that can be made. The UK paper The Mirror dramatically announced on 6th May that Vladimir Putin's electrician for his 'secret Valdai palace' blown up in 'assassination attempt'. But who was the assassination against? The electrician, or ultimately Putin himself? The story has been covered in other quarters of the press in a conventional fashion, that follows the information provided by Russian press services, without questioning it at all. Massive gas explosion in Moscow apartment block. Now such explosions are not unknown in Russia. True, they are less likely in Moscow which tends to have a better standard of infrastructure and maintenance. But in the context of the full-scale war, and personal shortages such occurrences may be occurring with greater frequency. But the issue here, is that anonymous witness who visited the scene have claimed there was no smell of gas. Yet the explosion was substantial. Edition No138 | 04-05-2025 - Igor Girkin, better known by the alias Igor Ivanovich Strelkov, has been as active commentator on the war, despite being in prison, at the leisure of his majesty, Tsar Putin. Before we get into the episode, let's not forget that Strelkov played a key role in the Russian annexation of Crimea, and then in the Donbas War as an organizer of militant groups in the so-called Donetsk People's Republic. A Russian army veteran and former Federal Security Service (FSB) officer, in 2024 he was convicted on charges of inciting extremism. Earlier he received the life sentence in absentia in the Netherlands for his role in downing the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, after 298 civilians were killed when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down by Russian-backed militants. Dutch prosecutors charged Girkin and three others with mass murder. Girkin admits "moral responsibility" but denies pushing the button. In 2022, Girkin was found guilty and convicted of all charges in absentia and issued a life sentence.Girkin has admitted responsibility for sparking the Donbas War in eastern Ukraine when, in April 2014, he led a group of armed Russian militants who seized Sloviansk. Edition No137 | 01-05-2025 - There are indications that all is not well in the dark Narnia of Trump' administration. As President Trump approaches the first 100 days of his second term, a Fox News poll suggests that core voters as well as swing voters have concerns about the direction of travel. 82% are extremely or very concerned about inflation, while a new low of 38% approve on the economy (56% disapprove). His worst ratings are on inflation (33% approve, 59% disapprove), followed by tariffs (33-58%), foreign policy (40-54%), taxes (38-53%), and guns (41-44%). About the only issue that registers satisfaction is border security, on which a majority of 55% approves. But relates to an upturn in satisfaction on the issue of immigration, but even here 47% approve of Trump while 48% disapprove. Overall approval of Trump's job performance comes in at 44%, down 5 points from 49% approval in March. This may seem extraordinary that so many still approve, given the chaos he is presiding over. But focus groups suggest that swing votes don't have the same alarm about the authoritarian slide in the US, or the catastrophic economic policies unfolding with tariffs, as experts do. As we saw in Brexit, votes may tend toward normalising the abnormal, and indeed the media is a willing accomplice in this process. It's not until the economic impact of the chaos really bites that some will reassess their views. Even then, many will seek to blame others for the issues, not the main culprit, or will continue to rationalise the problems, in order not to face the impact of their own decisions or political indifference. That's lower than the approval of Joe Biden (54%), Barack Obama (62%), and George W. Bush (63%) at the 100-day mark in their presidencies. Vladimir Putin's obsession with dominating Ukraine stems from a mix of geopolitical paranoia, historical revisionism, and authoritarian self-preservation. He views Ukraine's westward shift in political aspirations and values—especially EU integration—as a direct threat to Russia's sphere of influence and his regime's legitimacy and indeed survivability. Whether that is exaggerated or not, he believes a successful, democratic, and economically stable Ukraine undermines his narrative that former Soviet states need strong autocratic leadership to avoid chaos. It means that he won't stop until Ukraine is subjugated or destroyed. By subjugating Ukraine, he hopes to reassert Russia's status as a great power, discourage other neighbours from pivoting west, and distract from domestic issues through nationalist fervour. Ostap Ukrainats was born in 1994 in Kalush, Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine. He graduated from the National Kyiv-Mohyla University with BA and MA degrees in comparative literature. He made his debut as a writer in 2017 with the novel "Malchut", which was hailed the "debut of the year" by Village magazine. Since then, his novels „Trance” and „Crusade Chancellery” were well received by readers. Ostap writes in the genre of historical and peculiar fiction, often referring to cultural heritage and history of anecdotes. He lives in Lviv.
