In this episode, Bryan and Josh dip their toes into the idle/incremental game space! Three idle games have been chosen: Universal Paperclips, SPACEPLAN, and (the) Gnorp Apologue. All are quite different manifestations of the idle/incremental game and each has its own strengths and unique offerings to explore. Universal Paperclips (2017) was created by Frank Lantz of New York University and has been acclaimed as one of the best of the genre. It features a unique retelling of the paperclip maximizer thought experiment. SPACEPLAN (2017) was developed by Jake Hollands and published by Devolver Digital and features striking visuals and a relaxing synth-heavy soundtrack. Finally, (the) Gnorp Apologue (2023) is the game that spurred the conversation on idle games to begin with and as its description states: “is a game where you help small beings called gnorps get rich”. Its also quite visually interesting any layers in some unique ‘management game' style mechanics. So listen in while Bryan goes to make some dinner and Josh stares with wrapped attention at his computer screen and they jointly put together their thoughts on this varied and interesting genre.Three Word Reviews: Universal Paperclips: Bryan - Existential Thought Experiment / Josh - An Argument AgainstSPACEPLAN: Bryan - Perfect Entry Point / Josh - Waiting for Story(the) Gnorp Apologue: Bryan - Prestige Incremental Management / Josh - Spectacle, Strategy, Screensaver
We're back to regular programming again this week as Paula tackles another series of Otome routes, while Josh gets stuck into a couple of mysteries and some point and click adventures. With only one retirement and a few more on the go, it's time for the winner of our guessing game to pick a title for the other to play, before kicking off a new round with a fresh guess. Will Paula take an early lead in this secondary instalment? The answer may surprise you! Another year of video game music on vinyl is coming to a close, and your Video Game Grooves hosts are convening once again for the 2nd Annual... we suppose we shall call them the "Groovy Awards" (or the "Groovies", as they are colloquially called far and wide)! But we are not alone. Along with Anthony, Paul, and Jeremy, you will be treated to Frederik Lauridsen from BlipBlop.net, who will preside over the proceedings. And our task is not small, dear friends. For we are choosing our favorite video game vinyl music releases of 2018! The best, the brightest, or perhaps just our completely biased personal picks! There were great releases by the various labels this year. Some we covered earlier, and some we have yet to feature, but we only have so much time. But that's not all! You also voted and made your collective voice heard. We listened, and we will also present your picks for your favorite releases. So without much more ado, please enjoy. Agree with our picks? Disagree? Let us know about it in the comments, or you can reach us all on Twitter! (You can find a complete list of picks in this hidden corner of our website... Keep those spoilers to yourself!) ... a little more ado... we figured we'd better take care of the news and releases. Special episode or not, new releases wait for no man (and no bank account)! also this and this Outro: "Launch" - Spaceplan, by Logan Gabriel Twitter - @vg_grooves, @ajohnagnello, @walnutsoap, @jeremy_lamont, @blipblopwax Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment (Fangamer) (Bigwax) Spelunky (Fangamer) Switched on SNES Secret of Mana (Bandcamp) (Vinyl Digital) Distant Worlds 3 (Amazon) Megacopter (Data Airlines) (Bandcamp) Shantae (Game Boy Color) (Fangamer) (Limited Run Games, sold out) Minimum Records Holiday bundle (Minimum Records, 1 remaining!) As tradition holds, our midweek observance of the "games we have been a-playin'" opens with some new hotness, but also some tried and true entries. LeGrande scores hits with Horizon Zero Dawn, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, and Monster Hunter World. Jeremy orbits endlessly with Spaceplan and plumbs the depths (or is it heights?) with roguelike Tangledeep. Dale fights his way closer to victory with XCOM Enemy Unknown, and flouts his mommy instinct by tossing babies in Offspring Fling. Jake Hollands' SPACEPLAN is a narrative clicker about space, potatoes, and a lot of made-up science. On this episode of Audax we take a look at this graphic designer's absurd yet clever (and Stephen Hawking inspired) take on the idle genre while also discussing how he got involved with the gaming scene in the first place. In this episode, your GameBytes Show hosts explore the idea of "clicker" games and "idle" games as LeGrande talks about SpacePlan. Dale plays the hardcore-but-not-too-hardcore shooter Insurgency. Jeremy tries out the Xbox One re-release of the "cult favorite" Phantom Dust, and gets a whiff of one of his favorite games in the process.

Episode 16, in which our heroes actually try out Spaceplan, contemplate Hearthstone's Barnes, watch Overwatch TV, uncover a hidden Diablo conspiracy, dream of a better Diablo, enter the realm of Deus Ex, and profess their love of Fantasy Football.
