Walking with the Saints l St. Gertrude the Great, Patron Saint of the West Indies, Peru and Mexico l November 16 Do you pray for the souls in Purgatory? We must pray for them so that they can enter Heaven at once. The holy souls are also praying for us even if we do no ask them. St. Gertrude, our Saint for today loved to pray for the holy souls. Gertrude was born on January 6, 1256 in Eisleben, Thuringia of the Roman Empire. Orphaned at the age of four she was admitted at the school of the nuns as a student. Gertrude was confided to the care of Mechtilde, younger sister of the Abbess, also named Gertrude. The young Gertrude later joined the monastic community in 1266. She received a thorough education, knowing in fact the Scripture, the Fathers of the Church and the writings of some saints like St. Gregory the Great and St. Bernard of Clairvaux. She was fluent in Latin and well-versed in rhetoric. In 1281, at the age of 25, she experienced the first of a series of visions that continued throughout her life. Gertrude devoted herself strongly to personal prayer and meditation, and began writing spiritual treatises though only some survive today. The longest survival is the  The Herald of Divine Love or The Herald of God's Loving-Kindness, and her collection of Spiritual Exercises. A work known as Gertrudian Prayers is a later compilation, made up partly of extracts from the writings of Gertrude and partly of prayers composed in her style. It is also very possible that Gertrude was the author of a part of the revelations of Mechtilde of Hackeborn, the Book of Special Grace. Gertrude became one of the great mystics of the 13th century. She practiced together with her friend and teacher Mechtilde a spirituality called “nuptial mysticism,” seing herself as the Bride of Christ. She also wrote Spiritual Exercises. The importance of the Spiritual Exercises extends to the present day because they are grounded in the themes and rites of Catholic liturgy for occasions of baptism, conversion, commitment, discipleship, union with God, praise of God, and preparation for death. Gertrude's Spiritual Exercises can still be used by anyone who seeks to deepen spirituality through prayer and meditation. Gertrude was an early devotee of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Book 2 of the Herald of Divine Love is notable within the history of Christian devotion because its vivid descriptions of Gertrude's visions show a considerable elaboration on the long-standing veneration of Christ's heart. This veneration was present in the belief that Christ's heart poured forth a redemptive fountain through the wound in his side, an image culminating in its most famous articulation by St. Bernard of Clairvaux in his commentary on the Song of Songs. ·Gertrude reported a vision on the Feast of John the Evangelist. She was resting her head near the wound in the Christ's side and hearing the beating of his heart. Afterwards, she asked John if on the night of the Last Supper he had felt these pulsations, why he had never spoken  about it. Gertrude died at Helfta, near Eisleben, Saxony on November 17, 1302. Her feast day is November 16. She is patron of the West Indies, Peru and Mexico. Gertrude showed "tender sympathy towards the souls in purgatory" and urged prayers for them. She is therefore invoked for suffering souls in purgatory. The following prayer is attributed to St. Gertrude, and is often depicted on her prayer card: “Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, for those in my own home and in my family. Amen.” Virtues: piety, humility, obedience, charity, honesty, temperance, fortitude Prayer: “St. Gertrude, help us remember to pray always for the souls in Purgatory.”

Ephesians 6:10-13 — Humanity is in a helpless state of sin and depravity as a result of the fall. People are fallen and wholly unable to save themselves. In this sermon on Ephesians 6:10–13 titled “Common and Special Grace,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones proclaims the grace of God is the answer to this great problem. For in God's love He has not left the world alone in its wickedness and depravity. He has provided a means of salvation in Jesus Christ as the only escape from sin. He has also provided common grace to restrain the sinful actions of people and nations. One of the most prominent forms of common grace is the institution of government. While government does not save souls, it nevertheless restrains mankind's sinful desires and actions. It is only by the saving power of the special grace of God that hearts and minds are renewed and turned to the light. Outward confirmation of the law of God can never bring salvation and true life. Listen as Dr. Lloyd-Jones exposes the lie of false religions and teachers who replace the grace of God with human works. There is true life in Christ Jesus in the gospel. This is the only hope that God has given the world, and it is the only hope that the church can proclaim to sinners and fallen people.

Key Conversation Points: There are over 15% of children in the United States with special needs. These precious children are in our schools, neighborhoods, families and churches.  We can grow in our mindfulness about their unique needs and learn how to love them and their warrior families.  Feeling alone in a crowd with the unique needs of your children can be the loneliest feeling in the world.  Have you ever been judged with people's eyes and voices like Lisa-Jo?  Lisa-Jo and Christie take the time to remember the past to encourage those in the trenches with little kids today.  Whether you need a prayer about an EpiPen, a tantrum, a bus driver or hope, Elrena Evans has the balm for the weathered heart of caretakers of children with unique abilities.  If you have children in your life, in any way, there's a book you need on your bedside table.  The book recommendation today is Special Grace: Prayers and Reflections for Families with Special Needs by Elrena Evans, Foreward by Joni Eareckson Tada.  It will help the helpers, parents, therapists, neighbors, friends and the church leaders that love these families. We'd like to introduce some amazing friends that have blessed our lives in so many ways. This Grace and Gift came through a special needs child named appropriately Lydia Grace. We learned how God is aware of all of us in need. We are all his children and all have desperate needs - to get from where we are currently to where He wants us to be eternally - and obviously as a concerned parent He is aware of us and loves us and blesses us and longs to comfort us as we are willing to receive Him. We discovered throughout this interview how God has prepared both David and Heather from their childhood with experiences that although seemed difficult at the time, actually empowered them and enabled them to handle with "Grace" this special situation to parent a special needs child. Even Sara, had been prepared with unique circumstances to have this "natural gift" which was actually a "nurtured gift" from God to have the capacity to embrace the role as a special caregiver and being this blessing into our family's life as well. Lydia Grace has strengthened the connections within their family, affecting the personality of her siblings to have more compassion and patients with others, teaching them how important service is in refining their character, and especially - how to see others as God sees them, as His special daughters and sons, who desire love and respect. It is so obvious to Sara and me, and many others how impressive these Proudfit children are and how they have been blessed with this special upbringing and special perspective. David and Heather recognize how they have been blessed to strengthen their Connection with God and rely on Him for so many things that seemed beyond their control and put their trust and faith in a loving heavenly father who is aware of their needs. They recount how God has sent "angels" to bless them, when no one else would know, in the form of others who responded to a special prompting or thought to reach out at the right moments. Encouraging us to be sensitive to promptings to serve, to reach out and recognize others in their times of need. God truly works though us, his children, to serve his other children in their needs. Finally, this amazing couple shares how their Connections with each other, in their marriage, has been strengthened through this adversity, which they see as a blessing, a miracle, a gift, or grace from God. We hope you enjoy this visit with our friends, and forgive the technical issues that might arise as the occasional 4 wheeled ATV or Razor buzzes by as we shared a wonderful weekend with the Proudfit Family at their cabin in the wilderness of the Flagstaff mountains. I hope that you can benefit from this visit as much as we did and feel like you can relate with and even embrace the Proudfits as your new friends through this Podcast medium. Thanks for allowing us to Create Connections that Count with the David and Heather Proudfit family! Don and Sara

And this more important theological question is this: Which order of grace – common or special – governs the world outside the church and the individual soul of man? Yes, we know that God sustains His elect through special grace, and He sustains the reprobates through His common grace. But what about the world? When God looks at the world outside the church and the souls of men, when He looks at the creation, or at the societies of man, or at the social institutions, or scientific endeavors, technological discoveries, at art and music and literature, at the total of our civilization today, does God look at it as something that just needs to be maintained and restrained (common grace), or does He look at it as something to be redeemed and saved (special grace)?
