On this week's mini-episode, I'd like to challenge you to get your students set up on Canva and help them get comfortable on the platform with a simple assignment that will give you a great fall display, literary travel posters. Have you seen PBS' The Great Read posters, which are available for free download on the PBS site? I'll link them in the show notes. They're fabulous. Each poster invites the viewer into a literary world. “Join Don Quixote on an Epic Quest” is overlaid on a lovely background of receding windmills with a small warning note, “Be Wary of Hulking Giants.” “Visit Wonderland” is fixed above a drawing of Alice falling down between purple mushrooms, with the catchy tagline, “See as many as six impossible things before breakfast!” The series includes Dune, Narnia, Harry Potter, 1984, Huck Finn, Gatsby, and more. They're stellar additions to your classroom decor, for sure, but they also lend themselves beautifully as visual mentor texts for this little project. Ask students to choose a book that's been meaningful to them in the past, one with a richly imagined setting. Show them the PBS posters and ask them what components seem consistent across the posters. Ask them to consider which posters they find most appealing and why, then use similar components in designing their own, on Canva. If you're new to Canva, I'm going to link a free step-by-step course I made for you so you can easily learn the basics that will help you and your students with a project like this. Starting with a simple project like this one is a great way to get everyone oriented onto the platform and help students warm up to design work, at the same time that you create a fun book-focused set of posters you can use on your door, in your hallway, or around your classroom library. OK, that's a wrap on today's quick episode. I hope you're heading over now to set up a free Canva for Education account if you don't have one yet! And no, I'm still not sponsored by them, but feel free to suggest me to any Canva Executives you know. Check out PBS' The Great Read Poster Series: https://www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read/resources/downloads/ Take the free Canva Confidence Course: https://sparkcreativity.kartra.com/page/getCanvaconfidence See an example poster I designed (guess what book it's from!): Go Further: Explore alllll the Episodes of The Spark Creativity Teacher Podcast. The Extraordinary Anna Parke by Melanie Murphy is a great read in womens literature with magical realism! This is a great read with just a touch of magic. Like a womens literature, this book strongly develops the emotional tension and relationships women's literature is known for. Melanie Murphy when she isn't writing, she has her nose in a good book, cheering her two boys at their little league gams, and her toes in the sand. She lives in a great community called Massapequa Park, in Long Island. When she isn't teaching, she can be found teaching English, reading a good book, cheering on her boys at a little league game, or relaxing in the sand at the local beach (in the summers of course). If you are interested in purchasing their books, you can do so here https://www.amazon.com/Extraordinary-Anna-Parke-Melanie-Murphy/dp/B0CCCKKF5Y If you enjoyed this episode you might also enjoy my interview with If you are interested in being a guest on my podcast, you may fill out the form on my website: http://authorsalcove.com/be-a-guest You can also follow me on: Facebook: http://facebook.com/authorsalcove Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/authorsalcovepodcast/ Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/agnes-wolfe-20bb47288/ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2EQYPBl1LtZh08qCdIRHTy?si=aa56d7a9565a49fa YouTube: https://www.youtube. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/authorsalcove/message

The book of Saddlebrook did what it was suppose to do. Bring people together! It started out as a low budget interesting Romance Novel to go down in history and gain more readers over time. The projected 10-15 people it would bring this book from start to finish from creation, editing to final printed publishing is what would complete getting the book out there to the public. However, thankful to social media over 100 people have now gotten involved in helping get this book out there for everyone to read. Bringing together a worldwide multi-cultural diverse community surrounded by animal, country and farm lovers all over. Hopes to this book will bring an awareness to dedication, commitment and to maintain our farmer's rights. Below are links to articles published regarding supporting information on this Saddlebrook publication. It looks as if this will be the first book into a new series. Mt. SAC History Professor, Professional Learning Academy Coordinator, and One Book, One Campus Coordinator Rita Page talks with our host Sun Ezzell about this year's One Book One Campus winner “Illegally Yours: A Memoir” by Rafael Agustin, Mt. SAC alumni and writer on the hit TV show Jane the Virgin. Called “an alternatingly hilarious and touching exploration of belonging and identity, Illegally Yours revolves around one very simple question: What does it mean to be American?” We hope you'll join us for this year's One Book, One Campus Great Read! Resources: Get the book: https://illegallyyoursbook.com/ NPR Feature -“Jane the Virgin' writer recounts growing up undocumented in ‘Illegally Yours'” The Mission of the OBOC Program The goal of Mt. SAC's OBOC program is to unite students, faculty, and staff around a shared reading experience designed to promote discussion and understanding of issues in our campus community and beyond. The program incorporates curriculum and campus-wide activities that build unity and contribute toward the achievement of the College's mission. nd the Winner Is... Every year members of the Mt. SAC community vote on a book to read together as part of the OBOC program. The winner of the 2022 - 2023 OBOC election is Illegally Yours: A Memoir by Rafael Agustin. Brief Summary of Illegally Yours About the Memoir: Illegally Yours: A Memoir is a heartwarming, comical look at how this struggling Ecuadorian immigrant family bonded together to navigate Rafa's school life, his parents' work lives, and their shared secret life as undocumented Americans, determined to make the best of their always turbulent and sometimes dangerous American existence. From using the Ricky Martin/Jennifer Lopez “Latin Explosion” to his social advantage in the ‘90s to how his parents—doctors in their home country of Ecuador—were reduced to working menial jobs in the US, the family's secret became their struggle, and their struggle became their hustle. An alternatingly hilarious and touching exploration of belonging and identity, Illegally Yours revolves around one very simple question: What does it mean to be American? About the Author: Rafael Agustin is a Mt. SAC alumnus, and a writer on the award-winning The CW show, Jane the Virgin. He is a Sundance Fellow for his TV family comedy, Illegal, based on his life as a formerly undocumented American. Rafael currently serves as Executive Director of the Latino Film Institute (LFI), where he oversees the Youth Cinema Project, their statewide project-based learning educational film program, and the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF). In 2018, the LA Weekly named Rafael one of the fifty most essential people in Los Angeles. Also in 2018, the United Nations invited Rafael to speak at their 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Coach Code Podcast with Jon Harp You can't read the same book twice. You may read the same book multiple times, but each time you do, you bring a different perspective to the text. You might notice things that you missed the first time around, or you might interpret the events in a different way. Additionally, your own life experiences will color how you see the story. Just as you change and grow as a person, your perspective on a story can also evolve over time. Reading is an interactive process, and no two readers will have exactly the same experience. So even though you may not be able to literally read the same book twice, reading it multiple times can still provide new insights and understanding. Join us for this week's episode of the Coach Code Podcast with Jon Harp as we talk about books, life, business, and whatever else we dive into.
Every bibliophile needs a good read (or even better, a great one), and have I got a great one for you! I take a few minutes to gush about one story I can't get out of my head and heart, The Gold in These Hills, and the wonderful world of books otherwise known as GoodReads. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. A Gush about a Good (more like GREAT) Read & GoodReads I'm not going to go too much into The Gold in These Hills. That's the book I gushed about, and you can read my review of it HERE for my double coppers on that sucker. But GoodReads deserves a little bit of gushing, too. Because after years of underestimating the genius of it, I am a huge, raving fan. Yes, there are drawbacks. Can you say clunky interface? But with a few tips, you can get past that. So, without further ado, here are ... SEVEN reasons or ways to use GoodReads. Keep track of all those great books you hear about but can't start reading today. Janey Sue mentions this great book by Kate Angelo. In the car on the way home (if you're a phone person) or once you get home, you can add Driving Force to your "Want to Read" and forget about it--until you need a book. Then you go to that "shelf," scroll through the covers, and voila! You see it, choose it, and buy it. FREE books. GoodReads always has tons of giveaways. I go through periodically and enter the ones I want. Oh, and do authors a favor! Share that giveaway! We appreciate that. "Update Progress." For the longest time that made no sense. Why would I want to stop reading to share an update on my reading progress? Well, there are quite a few reasons! For example: I can comment on the things I really love or dislike on those comments, which gives me a mini-summary of my reading experience. I can cobble all of those together at the end and voila! A book review! If I have to put the book down for any reason, I can tell by my comments what was going on again and I don't have to start over. It helps authors! No, really. Every comment you make gets put into your "feed." Anyone following you sees those updates and may discover they want to read the book (or not!!!), too! Learn about other books. Seriously, I can't tell you how many books I've learned about just because someone added them to their shelves. Reviews. Want to know if a book is your jam? Some GoodReads reviews even have spoilers if you're really not sure how much vampireness you can stand from Dracula or if maybe you should just go read Anne of Green Gables like any other sane person (just joking!!!) Bonus points for helping authors! You can post like you can on Facebook. Ask for recommendations. Share a quote image (use HTML. HERE is where you can copy the code you need). Thank an author (seriously, I need to do this!). Whatever. If you'd post about it (book) FB, it can go here, too! Groups. Yep, like Facebook (see, it's really Facebook for readers and readers only--no politics! Sorta... some books...), there are GoodReads groups! We even have a Christian Fiction group on GR that we're trying to kick off the ground. Check that out HERE. I mentioned maybe making an infographic with these things, remember? Well, I found one online, and while it's not exactly the same, since I don't have all my tips and tricks here, I'm going to just leave this LINK and then make another post later if/when I ever get mine made. :D Like to listen on the go? When we recorded this episode, I hadn't read all of Beneath a Star-Lit Sky yet, but um... yeah. I have now, and guys! If my gush that I could do about this book isn't enough to get you to go grab it on Kindle Unlimited, buy a paperback, or download it to your Kindle, then maybe this episode is just what you need #BecauseYes! JL Crosswhite came on to talk about Romantic Suspense back in Episode 71, and you can listen to that that HERE. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. It's Time for a Great Read and a Vicarious Camping Trip or Not In this episode, we chatted about the area the book takes place, the long process it takes for her books to germinate, how she puts all kinds of personal tidbits in her books, and more. As for me, I went and read the book. Look, this isn't the most amazing review, but it's exactly how I felt the moment I finished: Some might accuse me of giving this book five stars because I know the area it takes place in--know it well and love it. Others might accuse me of giving this book five stars because I'm a sucker for bookworms and the military. Both could be partially true. Who knows? But I say that I give it five stars for the moment that I called the twist and it kicked off an avalange of events that even got me off on a wrong trail, suspecting someone not worthy of my suspicion. Way. To. Go. Love the characters, already admitted to loving the setting, and the story has all tension you could hope for. Misunderstandings are realistic and handled well. Where's the next? I'm not sure I can wait. Just sayin'. That PDF she promised? You'll find it on the In the Shadow page HERE. Beneath a Star-Lit Sky by JL Crosswhite Small town girl looking to mend her broken heart… …Small town boy needing to repair his reputation. Who knew those simple goals could unearth life-threatening danger? Holcomb Springs has a wild past, and the wilderness outside its borders hides a treacherous present. Teacher Ella Sommer is ready to forget about her broken engagement and escape running into her ex. An overnight hiking trip in the local wilderness offers what she needs to clear her head, breathe out under the stars, and prove that she is more than just a bookworm. Former Army Ranger Reese Vega left Holcomb Springs with a bad boy rep, but has returned wiser, longing for a fresh start. Helping his brother's hiking tour business offers him an opportunity to get into the great outdoors and let his past evaporate into the mountain air. But can he repair the relationship with his family? When Reese and Ella are thrown together on the trail, what starts as a simple trek ends up filled with danger when they stumble across something they weren't supposed to see. Happy holidays from the "For the Love of Books Podcast" and Bettie's Pages. We hope your holidays may be filled with joy and peace. Bettie's Pages is a retro-inspired new and used indie bookstore that is more than just a shop. It's a cozy gathering place where you get to have fun, be authentic, and find friends in the heart of Lowell. And it all started with the crazy idea of one person, Nicole, who hated her job and didn't expect support from friends and family. "They were supposed to say, go find another job," said Bettie's Pages owner Nicole Lintemuth. But they didn't and the result is a welcoming space for everyone whether you're looking for a book, a unique gift, or respite from the hustle and bustle. The store opened right before the pandemic in 2020. In March of 2020, Nicole shipped out 250 book boxes. She's up to 400 book boxes now. She's been offering the book matching service ever since. "I am not going to get rid of this," Nicole said. "I have too much fun doing the book boxes." Also, if you prefer audiobooks, then Libro FM is the perfect indie alternative to audible. Any plans for 2022? Nicole has you covered. Join the "Cozy Mystery Book Club" in January with "Hope Never Dies." "I hope people will continue to support places that kept us sane," Nicole said.
