Director Jonathan Demme had the reputation as one of the most humanist filmmakers — meaning his films had the ethos of “no one is evil” and everyone had their reasons. In that regard, Rachel Getting Married might have been his masterpiece of this ethos. On today's episode, I'm joined by the film's editor, Tim Squyres, in an episode that double as both a career retrospective and a deep-dive into the film. We talk:- his second feature as editor being Ang Lee's first as feature director;- how he's since edited every Lee film except one;- the sequential art origins behind Lee's Hulk film adaptation;- the tech specs and future of High Frame Rates. Also:- why the freeform shooting of Rachel led to many technical challenges;- why Demme, like Lee, never gave him notes during shooting;- his other work with Demme, an adaptation of Ibsen's A Master Builder;- and how close Squyres came to editing Demme's final film, Ricki and the Flash.Tim Squyres is a two-time Academy Award nominee for Best Editing (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Life of Pi). Along with a career-spanning collaboration with director Ang Lee, he's also edited for Jonathan Demme, Robert Altman, Akiva Goldsman, Angelina Jolie, and Stephen Gaghan. He lives in Maplewood, New Jersey.Rachel Getting Married is available on VOD, digital, and Blu-ray from Sony Pictures.
Debra Squyres is an expert in all things HR and Customer Success, and she is about to join HackerRank as CCO, supporting over 2,000 customers and 11 million developers. In this episode, Debra shares the worst question she was ever asked in an interview, what it means to be data-driven in HR, and her thoughts on the future of work.
Every defense attorney longs for that glory moment when he's cross-examining a key witness for the State, who admits on the stand, "Yes, I lied. I made it up 'cause I'm crazy!" and your client goes free! Jim shares these moments and many more. (He calls them "Matlock experiences) Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. That's when criminal law can prove very entertaining. He also reveals those cases, dear to his heart, that keep him going, loving his profession, the ones that motivate him to keep the good fight day after day assuring that he truly makes a difference in the life of a client.Politically, Jim declares himself a Libertarian, someone who upholds our Constitution, especially the Bill of Rights, and believes on his best days, he's one who fights to ensure that no government takes away his client's God-given sovereign rights. Although he is friends with many judges and prosecutors, he strongly believes that limiting government is in everyone's best interest. When the criminal justice system allows criminals to be seen as real people, then our entire society climbs up a notch. You can reach him on facebook, Jim Squyres, or contact his office located at 207 E. FXF_S06EP01 INNOVATIONS IN POST - THE NEXT FRONTIER - GEMINI MAN with Tim Squyres, Derek Schweickart, Jennifer Lane and Andrew Leven As movie-going audiences choose more often to view their entertainment on the smaller screens of home theaters, tablets and phones, movies like GEMINI MAN directed by Ang Lee and shot in 4K resolution, at 120 frames per second, for 3-D projection are intentionally built to create a hyper real immersive experience that will incentivize audiences to experience films on a big screen in a large theater with a crowd and participate in vital communal catharsis. For the filmmakers, the choice to work in this format was on almost every level a technological experiment. For the post-production team especially, the format became a valuable testing ground for every aspect of media exchange along the pipeline. In this episode, I sat down with GEMINI MAN's Picture editor, Tim Squyres, 3D Digital Intermediate Supervisor, Derek Schweickart , First Assistant Editor, Andrew Leven and Associate Producer and Post-Production Supervisor, Jennifer Lane to talk about why this pioneering format required that they construct their own mobile lab to process the media and how they believe the format ultimately supports better storytelling. Frame By Frame is presented by Post New York Alliance because it's how you finish that counts. This episode marks the beginning of a new series exploring innovations in post-production and the vanguard film professionals in New York that are leading the way.
