Any band that hammers along for 43 years should be praised. But for a hardcore outfit that first seethed “I don't wanna live / To be thirty-four / I don't wanna die / In a nuclear war” 42 years ago on their 1980 debut Group Sex, pushing on for over four decades is a bit of a miracle. The Circle Jerks should be honored with a skanking statue in their hometown of Hermosa Beach, California. “If you would've told me in my 20s that I'd be in a seminal hardcore-punk band in my 60s, I would've said ‘you're fucking crazy, dude! I'm going to be dead by that time,'” jokes longtime Circle Jerks bassist Zander Schloss. “Now I say, live slow, die old!” The Circle Jerks were formed in 1979 by former Black Flag vocalist Keith Morris and ex-Redd Kross guitarist Greg Hetson. (Hetson has also been a member of another seminal SoCal punk rock band, https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-bad-religion (Bad Religion), from 1984-2013.) They were joined by bassist Roger Rogerson and drummer Lucky Lehrer. Group Sex is one of the most important albums in the first swell of hardcore. It's worth noting that the 14-song collection was crammed into less than 16 minutes of tape. Tasmanian devil Morris raged his commentary on sex, drugs, politics, the rich, and even self-reflection. His bandmates redlined to keep up. Hetson's swift, stabbing guitar parts pierced and slit through the slamming, double-time rhythmic pistons that were Lehrer and Rogerson. Their 1982 follow-up, Wild in the Streets, contained five songs over two minutes long and three covers (“Wild in the Streets,” “Just Like Me,” and “Put a Little Love in Your Heart”), but all 15 tunes were still laced together with the same frenetic guitar bursts and rambunctious rhythms of Group Sex. The last of their most-influential works was 1983's Golden Shower of Hits, which alternated between short, melodic mayhem and slower-but-still-acerbic stompers. The next year saw the arrival of Schloss, who contributed heavily to the band's final three studio releases: Wonderful (1985), VI (1987), and Oddities, Abnormalities and Curiosities (1995). While out in support of the latter, their major-label debut, the Circle Jerks imploded. In subsequent years, Hetson focused on Bad Religion, started Punk Rock Karaoke, formed Black President, and built out his Hetson Sound studio. Schloss played guitar for Joe Strummer, drove the bass for the Weirdos, and even entertained on the silver screen, starting with the role of Kevin in Repo Man. While Morris battled health issues (he fell into diabetic comas in 2008 and 2013), he was able to get several projects off the ground and revisit old ones including Midget Handjob, Off!, and FLAG. The latter's a Black Flag byproduct featuring former members bassist Chuck Dukowski, guitarist/vocalist Dez Cadena, and Bill Stevenson—who produced most of their 1980s catalog—on drums, plus Stevenson's https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/descendents-stephen-egerton (Descendents) bandmate https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/descendents (Stephen Egerton) on guitar. Before the current celebratory run marking the band's first live shows in 11 years (and first full U.S. tour in 15), they announced drummer Joey Castillo (Queens of the Stone Age, Danzig, Eagles of Death Metal) would be propelling the Circle Jerks' runaway train. And since the band's core members are now all in their 60s, and the resolution of the ripping “Live Fast, Die Young” is yelled out at each show (“I don't wanna live / To be fifty-seven / I'm living in hell / Is there a heaven?”), they're well aware that according to their own canon they shouldn't be here and certainly not having this much fun. “I never thought the Circle Jerks would tour again, but you know what? Dreams do come true, and in some weird way, we're doing better than ever and this world tour proves it,” remarks Schloss. But is

One guitar (with no knobs), one amp, and one pedal is all this punk-rock papa needs to command the stage. It's pretty astonishing that a sophomoric band of misfits and outcasts have chiseled a 40-plus-year legacy of punk rock, but that's what the improbable Descendents have been doing since 1977. Their brand of snotty, snarling, snarky, succinct songs have endeared them to rock titans like Dave Grohl. "[They have] this shameless, love-song aesthetic—none of the other bands had the balls to do that," proclaimed Grohl in 2013's documentary Filmage: The Story of Descendents/All. "Everyone was screaming about Reagan or whatever." Additionally, through their blending of hardcore, drag-strip tempos, and melodious harmonies, they designed a vehicle for the '90s pop-punk explosion—paving the expressway for bands like Green Day and Blink-182 to crash into the mainstream. "They're like the punk-rock Beach Boys," said Blink-182's Mark Hoppus in Filmage. And don't forget their iconic, line-drawn mascot Milo, patterned after lead singer Milo Aukerman. That nerdy caricature's singular outline comically defines the Descendents' simplicity, humor, subtle brilliance, and everyman appeal. It also reflects the persona of Aukerman, who stated in Filmage, "I have this dichotomy of desires. I wanna rock out. I wanna be a punk-rock guy, but I also have this really strong ambition to be a scientist." The band's redlining riffer Stephen Egerton welcomed PG down to Birmingham, Alabama's Avondale Brewing Company, where he blasted through his punk-rock-approved, simplistic-yet-seething setup. Hey there, friends! Welcome to the show. I hope you all are doing well out there beyond Podcast Land. Tonight, I'm going to be debuting a new format for the show called "Flashback Fridays". Every Friday, I'm going to be highlighting an album that I not only love, but believe deserves more love, more credit, and a bit more of an audience. After all, this is a music podcast, primarily, so I thought this would be fun. Perhaps you've already heard of this band, or maybe you love this album already and it's been a while since you've given it a proper spin in your car with the windows down. We're approaching Summer, so it doesn't hurt to have some lesser known hidden gems available. I'm going to start with the year 2000, and I'm going to work my way up all the way to 2020. After that I may do some 90's releases that I don't think get enough attention, but we'll have fun with this. Tonight, the first album I'd like to highlight is Ace Troubleshooter, the self-titled debut album from the band with the same name. Ace Troubleshooter, often shortened to Ace, was an American pop punk band. Formed in December 1995 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, they released five albums. This first album was officially released on BEC Recordings and their next two records were released on Tooth & Nail Records. And those two records are great as well. Ace Troubleshooter is the third studio album by American pop punk band Ace Troubleshooter and their debut on BEC. The album was recorded at the Blasting Room with Bill Stevenson and Stephen Egerton of Descendents/All. My first band played a few show with Ace in Minnesota, and we also stayed with Ben, their bass player when we went up there. Those guys were a lot of fun, we really had a good time playing shows with them. I remember they owned a bus that they bought from a country music artist, and the only one in the band who could legally drive it was the drummer. John, the singer, eventually went on to play bass for Relient K. You can hear his voice on the song "Let it all out". Their first record is a really fun, fast, punchy pop-punk record that kind of came out of nowhere and it makes sense that it was recorded at The Blasting Room. It still sounds great. The guitars, the vocals, the drums... It doesn't sound like a record that's 21 years old. It's one that I revisit and I think you should check it out, if you haven't heard it. This is the first song off of the album, it's called SE 101. Okay, I hope you are all doing fantastically well this weekend. Let me know what you think of this format. Maybe you can recommend some records to me for future Nostalgia Fridays. Talk to you soon! Take care.

Jon Snodgrass is a charismatic and fascinating artist. He’s been making music for well over 20 years, releasing albums as a solo artist as well as with his band Drag the River. In 2020 he released three albums. One of them was with his old friend Frank Turner, and it was a follow up to an album they made 10 years ago called Buddies. He also released Tace which features many artists including Stephen Egerton from the Descendants, Joey Cape from Lagwagon, and Mickey Erg from the Ergs.    I had a fun conversation with Jon about his music, baseball, and all the craziness of 2020. I hope ya dig it!

Every Album Ever with Mike Mansour & Alex Volz

This week we discuss the speedy and technical ALL. ALL was formed by members of the Descendants after singer Milo Aukerman left to pursue a career in biochemistry. While they had a revolving door of vocalists over the years, the core 3 members, Bill Stevenson (of Black Flag), Karl Alvarez, and Stephen Egerton remained constant. ALL’s early material is wacky, technical, and legitimately proggy, however they became full blown pop punk by the mid 90s. Good stuff, but not if you hate pop punk.Closing track: “Fool” from Allroy’s Revenge (1989)Check out our episode playlists on Spotify! https://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincMike’s Picks:Allroy’s Revenge (1989) — Best Album Personal FavoriteNew Girl, Old Story (1991) — Worst AlbumAlex’s Picks:Allroy Sez… (1988) — Best Album, Personal FavoritePummel (1995) — Worst AlbumMass Nerder (1998) — Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Allroy Sez… (1988)Allroy for Prez EP (1988)Allroy’s Revenge (1989)Allroy Saves (1990)New Girl, Old Story (1991)Percolater (1992)Breaking Things (1993)Pummel (1995)Mass Nerder (1998)Problematic (2000)Follow Mike on Instagram @popejesseventura for show updates and @pandermonkey for original musicFollow Alex on Instagram @motherpuncher

Stephen Egerton is the guitar player in the bands "ALL" and "Descendents". Stephen got his start in music when he joined "Descendents" in the late 1980's and toured constantly for several years day in a day out. He recorded some great albums like "Batch" and "Type Thing" by "Big Drill Car" with fellow band mate Bill Stevenson. I met Stephen when he flew up to Toronto to record the first real recording I played on and literally taught me how to play bass in one recording session. He's recorded and played on tons of albums and it's an honour to know him and call him my friend.
