Listen to his previous episode: Take the Risk and Pursue Your Dreams.Understanding the future as a long-term investorIf you want to invest in three to ten-year opportunities, Steve says you need to know what the future will look like or at least have an idea of what that might be. However, as we try to understand the future, Steve says most of what we are reacting to is noise. You therefore, need to learn how to filter out what is signal and what is noise. Once you've identified which opportunities are legitimate signals and not noise, ask yourself where they could go. You'll never know for sure. But again, that's where you assign probabilities and say, this is likely to happen or more likely than something else. Now that you have an idea of where these things might go and what this future might look like, ask yourself how you'll act in that future.Steve adds that there's another equal danger to listening to noise, which is deafness. So there's the hearing of everything that may not be relevant or important, and then there's complete deafness. Steve says the vast majority of people are deaf. And so they're not even hearing and understanding the signals or the noises. Such people are complete pawns in...

BIO: Steve Faktor is a former Fortune-100 executive—turned entrepreneur. As Managing Director of IdeaFaktory Innovation, he helps tech, financial services, and consumer goods clients see and build the future. The McFuture Podcast features Steve’s provocative predictions and prescriptions. STORY: Steve’s lifelong dream was to be a comedian and radio personality just like Howard Stern. His parents, however, could hear none of it and pushed him to conform to being a nice boy who does well in school and then goes out to get a family and a job that everyone can be proud of. Today, he regrets never fighting hard to achieve that dream. LEARNING: Fight hard to pursue your dreams, and don’t let anyone stop you. It is not too late to turn back and chase your dreams. “If you follow the money, the culture, and technology, you will lead yourself to the right answers.” Steve Faktor Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/ideafaktory/ (Steve Faktor) is a former Fortune-100 executive—turned entrepreneur, futurist author ofhttps://amzn.to/3t349oI ( Econovation), and podcaster. Worst investment everSteve was always a creative, disruptive, and curious child. He would often question everything, including what the rabbis taught him. Tucking his creativity awayNow one thing Steve loved was writing. He would always write, and some of this stuff was so creative and funny. Steve kept his writing in a plastic shopping bag and tucked it away in his grandmother’s house in her closet. Watching his dream wither awaySteve’s dream was to be Howard Stern. He grew up listening to him. The excitement of live radio blew him away, and he just wanted to be part of it. Steve even bought a special Walkman that allowed him to record shows. He would listen to the recordings on his way to school and back. Steve even got into Boston University, where Howard went, but he ended up going to NYU, where he got an academic scholarship. Steve’s parents were oblivious to his passion for writing or his love of radio, and they couldn’t care less about it. To them, a successful life is where Steve grew up to be a nice boy who did well in school, went out and got a family, and a job that everyone could be proud of. And that is the kind of direction they pushed Steve in. Lessons learnedFight hard to pursue your dreamsYou have to fight harder if you feel that something is innate inside of you. You cannot allow anyone, even your parents, to guide you elsewhere. So, fight for that personal narrative that fits who you are. Andrew’s takeawaysIt is not too late to turn back and chase your dreamsThink about your dreams and the things that are holding you back from achieving those dreams. Now believe that you have shelved your dreams for far too long and gather the courage to move to the next level. While innovation can be difficult at any company, highly regulated industries with a thick rule book — both internally and from the government — face more roadblocks along the innovation journey. To find out how highly regulated companies can chalk up innovation wins, we sat down with Mohan Nair, Chief Innovation Officer at Cambia Health Solutions. Guests include Steve Faktor, host of the McFuture Podcast and the former Vice President of Business Growth and Innovation at American Express, and Ludwig Melik, CEO of the agile innovation company Planbox.
Every night, dozens of billionaires curl up with an underfed model, wondering where their next plate of wealth-affirming foie gras will come from. But heartless Americans don't care. They want billionaires to pay for universal healthcare, universal basic income (UBI), free college, and a pocket comb for Bernie. What if they met every demand? Would we be satisfied? What if the real problem is something far more sinister? Find out what it is – and what we can do about it – on the latest episode of The McFuture Podcast with Steve Faktor. “Futurist” Steve Faktor is here, and we dive into an interesting conversation about business; a nice departure from recent episodes. We discuss the businesses that Steve often consults for, and how the future of business includes social identity, and whether or not that's a good thing. We pontificate whether or not the market will adjust to private company's decisions to censor, and if there is any possible legal recourse for their recent censorship behavior.
My campaign is running to reform broken politics that have completely disconnected the voter from the government. Not only disconnected the voter from the government, but allowed the government to become entirely beholding to these monopolies. Whether it's in the tech sector, the banking sector, or the health insurance sector, an increasingly small group of concentrated entities have incredible influence over everything that happens in the lives of billions of us around the world. It's the natural progression of the economic cycle but, it also harkens back to Teddy Roosevelt in the end of the last Industrial Revolution. Then, we saw the consolidation with Carnegie and Rockefeller and others around railroads, oil, and banking. We are there once again, and the stranglehold on our government is real. It is abusing the people of this country and the people of Upstate New York. I've asked Steve Faktor to join us who is the CEO of IdeaFaktory, author, writer for Harvard Business Review, writer for Forbes, and formally the head of innovation and running innovation funds at a number of financial services firms including American Express and CitiGroup.

Ever wonder why suddenly there's all kinds of "fake news" and everyone, including our President, can lie without consequence? Steve Faktor explains the five evolutionary reasons why bullshit is winning. Enjoy the latest episode of The McFuture podcast (or read it below)! Remember to share it & rate it 5-stars on iTunes! In 1963, 10 percent of Yale students got A's. In 2012, 62 percent did. Why? Is it because $260,000 buys more genius? Or, some other reason? It's not just education inflating our egos. EVERYTHING is! We wouldn't know the truth if it tried to smother us in our sleep. There are real evolutionary reasons why we're suddenly drowning in “fake news” and a sea of lies. Consider our '100% genuine' lives... My Levi's still say they're a ‘36' — like they're starring in High School Time Machine. Or, that $3,000 Chanel bag that screams STATUS!! It screams even louder from your tiny studio apartment with a bathtub in the kitchen. Everyone knows Little Timmy can't sing, play basketball, or draw. But there's his wall of trophies and Fridge of Sorrows - stick figure mommy riding a flaming...beaver?? Maybe he's high. America is the Courtney Love of countries. We know where esteem, courage, and escape really come from: Pfizer. And without antidepressants, how else would Katie stage her daily on Facebook? "All bodies are beautiful!" "Nothing's sexier than confidence!" "True beauty's got booty!" Great. Let's test that at the bar. There's so much more. Ads disguised as lives on Instagram and Bravo. Bodies doctored by...doctors and Photoshop. Days at the office spent "curating" "authentic" "influencers" - pretending anyone, ever, wanted to "engage with brands." Employee self-assessments that make PowerPoints sound like heart transplants. And bosses and HR-types who pretend to care about your 'career development' while transparently protecting company interests. Then, there's "fake news" and crackpot conspiracies... Is falling for “fake news” really that different from cherry-picking real news to reinforce our fake realities? Or, our constant state of fake #outrage. Or, the mindless Buzzfeed advertorials and Refinery29 quizzes we share like e-Bola? Then, buy their shiny little cures. I haven't read a science book in 20 years. But my Facebook page says I f*cking love science! I don't even click on the links. Like, like, like!! Science is so easy! I love it! No, I f*cking love it!! You'd think our f*cking love of science would smother pseudo-science in its sleep. Not so much. Vaccines cause autism! GMO kills! Coffee cures cancer! Pot cures everything!! The earth is flat! It's no wonder why. Scientific studies have become like Bible passages - you can find one to support whatever you think the facts should be. Thanks, corporate funding! And laughable academic research system. What's Really Happening? We're witnessing America's transition from facts to feelings. Perception and reality haven't been this far apart since Dear Leader Kim Jong Un defeated the wizards at Dumbledore. The further we drift from reality — into this sea of feelings — the more defiant we become in our truth. After all, our identity depends on it. So every product, every tweet, every opinion, must reaffirm that identity; to give us meaning. It has to be true. If only there were some other historical example of people clinging to - and fighting over - unprovable dogmas... Possibly, a lesson we could learn.... Can't think of one... Nope, not one. When opinions and whole identities - are based on feelings, not facts – on the supernatural, not the observable – there's no foundation for debate or compromise. Everyone occupies a fantasy world of their choosing. The Thinker is on life support. Long live The Feeler! The Believer! The Belieber! Here's the audio of a fun interview I did this morning on NPR's Chicago station WBEZ about my 9 Corporate Personality Types article on Forbes.
This is a repost of Steve Faktor's original viral article on Forbes. In a way, innovation is like sex: those talking about it most are probably doing it the least. Before founding IdeaFaktory, I've had the privilege (and collateral hair loss) of innovating at top Fortune 100 firms, where ‘talk' was unavoidable. So I decided to codify my lessons as The 4C's of InnovationTM. These are: context, creativity, capabilities, and most importantly, culture. Any innovation worth doing demands cultural change. But who will lead that change? And who will reject it? Why does the same ra-ra event move some employees to tears, but lands like the Hindenburg with others? No need to hire an army of psychologists to electroshock your workforce for answers. Unlike fluffier lists of people to hire, I've profiled the nine kinds of people in your company now who will make or break any innovation or change initiative. (For more on culture change, also check out my new podcast with this week's guest Stan Slap.) 9 Corporate Personality Types A few years ago, I had a TV show idea based on the quirky characters I met while leading corporate innovation. (Think Alice in Wonderland with Armani suits and backstabbing.) As I discussed my characters with others, I discovered that some were universal "types". So I developed these nine personas to 1) have a little fun and 2) help me manage the culture component of my innovation projects. BAMBI Almost every new recruit (and many new hires) start out bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. They are fresh hard drives ready to be filled with data. You can get them to do almost anything. They walk into meetings armed with fresh slides, broad smiles, and a professionalism they've practiced in interviews, in school, and in the mirror. They can gleefully present for hours to anyone in the company. They can deliver news about layoffs, quotas or dire forecasts without a hint of irony or empathy. They are eager to please and crave learning, mentorship and new opportunities. BELIEVER Believer is a broad category that continues to branch. Generally, believers carry the torch for the brand and rally others. They'll proudly wear company- branded polo's and have cubes/ offices adorned with trophies, knickknacks, and photos of company picnics. They'll talk your ear off about new specs on the Widgetizer 5000. ALPHA Alphas are the Delta Force of the Believers. They'll eventually run business units and ultimately, the company. Alphas love crushing competition and playing the corporate game. Their identity, self-worth and status are linked to their corporate conquests. They value tutelage and access to people they respect. Top Alphas can even create reality distortion fields where their truth becomes the truth. That can be intoxicating to employees and others. But they can also be abrupt, egotistical, or have a "you're either with me or you're the janitor" attitude. Look elsewhere for second chances or a shoulder to cry on. SURVIVOR Survivors make it to senior positions, but don't quite have the horsepower of Alphas or Naturals. They know how to work the system. Survivors don't like taking risks and don't want to change the world, unless it's a sure thing. Some are master manipulators. Others miraculously survive every reorg. A few get inexplicable promotions after their last assignment flops. Their powers come from loyalty to Alphas, shared history, or knowing where the bodies are buried. Some get moved sideways forever – sometimes into good jobs that would be better served by others. If they ever leave, you'd get depressed knowing the size of their severance package. SOLDIER Soldiers are solid team players. They're not as well-rounded as Naturals or Alphas and seek out clarity. They avoid ambiguity (e.g. brainstorming) like it's a flaming rag at an Exxon station. They can be great at one thing like project management, analysis, process improvement or people development. When in the right roles, they shine,
