Linda Randall, DVM, KPA-CTP, LLA, TagTeach Level 3 Owner: One Smart Dog, Seville OH, USA Linda sold her veterinary hospital in 2019, where she had practiced as an ABVP Board Certified Diplomate, Companion Animals, for 20 years, and also worked with exotics. She then opened One Smart Dog, a full-service dog training facility, the month Ohio shut down for the pandemic in 2020, which, she says, was “exciting”. Linda has been engaged in dog sports, obedience, agility, and field trials with her Flat Coated Retrievers, and sheep herding, agility, and Scent with her Border Collies. Her passion for behavior grew from learning about training from a variety of trainers (she is a cross-over trainer) and realizing that although all the trainers she worked with felt they had a method that worked, only a few took the time to develop insight into why animals did what they did, or had the curiosity needed to want to understand what function their behavior had. Most had a “top-down” method of working with dogs which, the more she learned about the science of behavior, she found uncomfortable. And then: a friend came back from one of the first clicker conferences and talked about clicker training. Linda couldn't get enough information about it. She started attending positive reinforcement conferences such as Clicker Expo and taking classes (Living and Learning With Animals is a favorite!) and joining intentional R+ communities such as the Animal Training Academy. Linda works hard to maintain a positive presence in her daily interactions with friends, clients, students, and instructors. It can be difficult to run a full-service dog training facility, maintain her relief veterinary business and find time to do webinars and conferences, but Linda feels strongly the effort is worth it. She especially finds joy in working with kids who want to learn to train their dogs. With their increased ability at a young age to have excellent hand-eye coordination (hello cellphones and video games!), kids make wonderful, compassionate trainers. She believes that engaging with another species and working in age-appropriate spaces helps develop compassion for others and encourages acceptance of diversity. Linda has produced a 4-hour series on Kids, Race, and Positive Reinforcement for the Heart Album and, along with her co-host Kathie Nurena, MD, KPA-CTP, NACSW Cert. Instructor, Linda has spoken at The Convergence of Human Behavior, Animal Training, and Technology (CHATT) conference, The Lemonade Conference, and is speaking this fall at APDT. Linda and Kathie discuss Trauma Informed and Trauma Assumed Care in animals and people, with an emphasis on the intersection of animal training, human caregivers, and behavior. As a Black woman in the majority white professions of veterinary medicine and dog training, Linda has had experiences that have been life-changing and soul-searching at the same time. She is inspired to support others who have ventured into these worlds and to seek a deeper understanding of why we do what we do and why we believe what we believe. Behavior can help, and it can hurt, both the giver and the receiver. In a world of increasing compartmentalization of groups, and anger directed towards those considered “other”, she hopes encouraging a behavioral view and positive reinforcement interactions will, in some small, but tangible way, make a difference. As Linda says: we have to try. For links visit here >>> https://atamember.com/2023/07/06/linda-randall/

I loved talking to Hannah on the podcast. She has so much experience both as the owner/guardian of a reactive dog and as a dog walker and trainer. We discuss her move from rural Alabama to urban Richmond, Virginia. This involved shifting from the Alabama mindset of "Hey, I think it's kinda cool you alerted me to the delivery guy, cause we are out in the middle of nowhere" (ok, I exaggerate but you get my point) to the Virginia mindset of "Mweahhhh, it might not be so great for the neighbours should that happen every time".In Virginia, Hannah started working for the Richmond SPCA which sounds like an awesome organisation, leading the way to jobs as a dog walker and trainer. She has worked with lots of reactive dog clients and we discuss all that is involved in "handling encounters with other dogs and their owners", how you can get into the "you don't owe anyone an explanation" mindset (fake it till you make it) and much much more.Links:Hannah's girls on Instagram: @the__four__packThe training business Hannah works for: Canine Adventure, Canineadventure.net, training@canineadventure.net, phone:+1-804-432-7570The Richmond SPCA: https://richmondspca.org/Focusing on the celebrations: Marissa Martino's book: Human-Canine Behavior Connection (affiliate link)The book Hannah describes as "clicker training for humans": Don't Nag... In this episode, we hear from Ryan O’Donnell about his efforts to communicate about the Behavioral Science field using podcasts and videos. The content he produces is varied; some being directed to parents and other caregivers and some directed to BCBAs. He also gives presentations about autism all over the world, so he’s very knowledgeable about the field and where it’s headed.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could clicker train people? I mean, technically.. there's the science for it and it does work (look up TagTeach), but I don't think the other horse owners at the barn would take kindly to you clicking and giving them gummy bears haha. BUT, we can use the idea of shaping plans and reinforcing approximations of behavior with positive reinforcement for both ourselves, those around us, our students, and even the other people at the barn.. and without it being "weird" or requiring a lot of work on your part. In this episode I talk about the ways we can use positive reinforcement and shaping plans to modify our own behavior, become better trainers, enjoy our own training more, have better relationships with our human learners (students), and more! ✦ www.TheWillingEquine.com✦ Instagram.com/TheWillingEquine ✦ YouTube.com/TheWillingEquine ✦ Facebook.com/TheWillingEquine ✦ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thewillingequine/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thewillingequine/support
Welcome to the 11th episode of The Dog Real Talk! My name is Agnieszka Janarek and I am your host! My guest today is Theresa McKeon from TAGteach. If you haven’t heard about TAGteach you should definitely check out this episode! References: www.tagteach.com “After more than 30 years as a national level gymnastics coach, Theresa was determined to find a way to speed up skill acquisition for her athletes while simultaneously decreasing frustration all around. The answer was in the science of learning. The problem was the most beneficial tools defined in the “science” were clunky and difficult for coaches to procedurally implement. In response, Theresa along with Joan Orr and Karen Pryor created TAGteach, a vehicle that transported the science of learning from the rigid rules of academia to the riotous world of live teaching and coaching. Today, Theresa designs and presents TAGteach workshops and seminars around the world and has adapted the technology in multiple fields including: education, business management, industrial education and safety, military, medical training, corrections, professional sports, and family communication” WE would love to hear your feedback about this episode! In Session 69 of The Behavioral Observations Podcast, we are treated to a TAGteach primer from Martha Gabler. In this episode, Martha shares how she discovered TAGteach when she was searching for intervention strategies to help her son with Autism. Martha also describes how she used this teaching strategy to reduce tantrums, bolting, and problematic sleep routines. In doing so, she provides us with a nice overview of the basics of TAGteach. If this is something you are interested in learning more about, we have links a-plenty below. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!
This week we are talking with Theresa Mckeon from TAGteach International. If you are in the dog training world, either professionally or as a hobby, and aren’t familiar with TagTeach, you should definitely check it out. TagTeach is a really cool way of looking at teaching and learning. It’s an approach that applies clicker training philosophy to teaching human learners. Like clicker training with animals, TagTeach facilitates learning by breaking skills down into pieces and giving instant and meaningful feedback, focusing on building behavior and reinforcement, rather than hassling about what not to do. Unlike clicker training with animals, TagTeach also encompasses using positive, and precise language to give clear instructions… but of course, we already know you don’t have to speak the same language as your learner to teach them. And that’s one of the things that I think is so cool… TagTeach techniques work beautifully even when the teacher and student can’t speak the same language at all… I mean literally… like if one is from Finland and the other is Turkish. Or other countries… either way. When the behavior that is being taught is broken down into such small pieces that the goal is completely black and white… either it was accomplished or not… then words don’t matter as much, because both teacher and learner can tell if that goal has been accomplished. But of course, it’s nice to have clear language to give instructions when you can. And when you do use words, it’s super important to be clear and precise. That’s one of the topics we discussed… which is particularly relevant for us, I think… because those of us who get very excited about our topics often have a habit of flooding the listener with words. Theresa calls it “passion talking”, and I’m certainly guilty of that on a regular basis. We also talk a lot about the parallels between teaching animals and humans. And we discuss our opinions on the worst part about being a grown up. But first, I want to let you know that my new online mentorship program, Zero to CD is officially open for enrollment. Zero to CD is a comprehensive mentorship program designed to help positive trainers just like you earn their first competitive obedience title… even if they don’t know the first thing about obedience. The program covers everything you need to know compete successfully in Novice-level obedience. Providing training, support, and accountability to keep you focused and on track. Humans need structure and reinforcement too! And this program aims to provide exactly that. Enrollment is limited, and the next round begins May 1. So if you’d like to find out more, visit: www.zerotocd.com For show notes for this episode, visit: www.wonderpupstraining.com/podcast
