I need to apologize to anyone who listens to this episode and purchases a ticket to Lollapalooza because I said Phoebe Bridgers is on the lineup. That is utter misinformation, she's probably busy that weekend, and I have no idea where I heard this rumor or why it came out of my mouth. Please forgive me!Okay, now that we got that out of the way. Bernadette Tow had always wanted a dachshund but didn't grow up with dogs. Her husband surprised her about five years ago with the option of bringing home a puppy, and raising Hershey inspired her to learn more about dog training and behavior. After a career switch, she earned a Diploma in Canine Behaviour Science and Technology (Dip. CBST) from CASI (Companion Animal Sciences Institute), and is studying with the Academy for Dog Trainers. She is a co-trainer with Raintown Dog Training in Vancouver, BC, Canada and teaches puppy, basic manners, and tricks classes. She also works part-time at Petite Paws Playcare, which is a small dog daycare. We discussed how she ended up with Hershey, handling reactivity in an apartment, and why she switched careers. "Can't we get a little respect?!" Our pint-sized companions often don't get the respect they deserve, a topic we dive into with Abbey Johnson, a keen advocate for small dogs. Abbey shares her journey from initially fostering a small dog with behavior issues, to becoming a well-known defender for these little champs, shedding light on their unique needs, training strategies, and the need for representation in dog-related conversations. The Aggression in Dogs ConferenceThe Bitey End of the Dog Bonus EpisodesThe Aggression in Dogs Master Course and Expert Webinar Bundle --- LIMITED TIME SPECIAL OFFERABOUT ABBEY:Abbey Johnson CPDT-KA, FDM"Understanding animals and their behavior has always been a passion of mine. I grew up surrounded by dogs, cats, horses, and various other types of animals throughout my childhood onwards. The more time I spend with animals, the more I realize the disconnected communication we often tend to have with them. Animals, and dogs especially, are always talking to us. It's our job to stop, listen, and kindly teach them about our human world!I have an extensive background working with shelter and rescue dogs. Stemming from this comes my special love for small breed dogs, and although I work with all dogs from Chihuahuas to Great Danes, I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people reach their full potential with their small breed dogs, who can often be overlooked and misunderstood. I strive to make my two rescued small breed dogs, Phoebe and Pocket, an example to the fact that small dogs are just as trainable and just as deserving of a fulfilled life as any other dog! We spend most of our days learning tricks, practicing nosework, adventuring out in nature, or curled up watching movies on the couch.I graduated in 2018 with my Bachelor's in Psychology from Auburn University, and continued on to work for over 5 years in animal sheltering/rescue, where I generated a lot of experience handling various dogs with different degrees of behavioral needs. From there, I pursued my passion for training by becoming a multi-certified professional dog trainer, and haven't looked back! I strive to be approachable, accessible, and non-judgemental when working with clients. My goal is always “progress over perfection,” and I will never try to hold you to unrealistic or unhelpful standards when working together. In episode 34 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we are talking about dogs once again! Usually, when we are on the trail, we are used to seeing large or medium-sized dogs, but dogs of all sizes enjoy hiking and playing outside. If you are someone with a small dog and you want to integrate them into your outdoor activities, this is the episode for you. As you know, I am a very proud dog mom to three large dogs, and although I might have a few tips about hiking with dogs, I'm definitely not an expert and I am very uneducated when it comes to working with smaller breeds. That's why I was excited to sit down and chat with Jessica Williams and get her tips for taking small dogs on outdoor adventures. Jessica has been camping and hiking with her Dachshunds for over 15 years and worked in the environmental conservation field for over 18. Ten years ago, Jessica launched the award-winning blog You Did What With Your Wiener?, merging her passion and experience with Dachshunds, outdoor recreation, and the environment. Since then, she has inspired small dogs and their owners around the world to explore the outdoors and put more adventure into their lives. The difference in effectively training large versus small dogs, has more to do with your technique and what is required from you, rather than their abilities. The mechanics of training large and small dogs stay the same, but there are subtle differences in how you train, that can get in the way of success or guarantee it. In this episode, I’ll offer three training tips for small breeds having to do with the position of your body, the size of their tummies and the additional time and patience that may be required from you to teach them some simple behaviors. Do you have a dog that’s behavior is so bad that it is causing havoc in the home or damaging relationships with other people in your life? Maybe you tried training the pooch yourself, but it seems like it is useless. Should you call in some outside help and get a dog trainer but don’t know what to look for, or how to find a good one? This is the exact problem my guest, Louie Torres, experienced. He is the CEO and founder of Unleashed Consulting, a company that helps dog trainers grow their businesses, and he’ll tell you his story about a badly behaved Chihuahua, not being able to find a trainer that would work with the dog, and the journey that finally led to him identifying and working with the perfect trainer that changed the dog’s behavior, Louie’s life, and even his business! In this week’s Creature Feature, you’ll hear a story that I can really relate to. About a man who had a problem with an outside plumbing pipe that resulted in his house being flooded. This happened to me recently, but the causes were very different. Mine was a block in the pipe that I had no control over, his was a choice he made - in order to save the life of seven puppies. About the creature features, the animal stories I’ve been telling you, I’d love to get your feedback about them - if you like this feature and would like me to continue them. Please write me a comment on the episode or blog pages on the website, raisingyourpaws.com. Or you can write me at susan@raisingyourpaws.com. For taking the time to leave a comment, I’ll randomly select a number of people and send a coupon for a free bag of NutriSource pet food. Additional Resources for the show. In this mythbuster, we bust the myth that you can't feed raw dog food for small dogs or toy breeds. Dr Brendan compares this to saying baby wolves cannot eat raw meat. Of course they can! The guys recommend giving your small breed or toy dog a well-blended, complete raw dog food for small dogs. They also say feed appropriately sized bone material to a small dog. Like chicks and chicken wings. We don't need to give huge cow bones to a chihuahua.
Assistant Professor of Biology Ana Jimenez studies the reasons why most small dogs tend to outlive their larger counterparts, and she also works to understand the impacts of climate change on songbirds. Dig deeper into the biology behind these questions in this new episode of 13.

Board-n-train, classroom style, or even 1-on-1 without a 2 way conversation (due to the trainer's inability to adapt to individual clients and dogs), can be limiting for both the trainer/behaviourist and their client. Learn why working with fosters and rescuers forces trainers and behaviourists to elevate their skill set. Season 5 is a "Dogology" (kinda like a mixology) of tips, Q and A's, interviews, discussions and a deeper look into the 3 components of UPWARD Dogology all with the goal of increasing awareness and making the world a better place for all animals, including humans! Season 4 is interviews with people and organizations that help animals. Increase your awareness and be part of the solution by listening, sharing, and reviewing. Season 3 dives deep into trending methods. Are they right for you and your dog? Season 2 shares the learning journey of my clients with dogs with different issues and backgrounds; always interesting and a great way to feel a connections with others who have similar experiences. Season 1 starts by sharing my unique learning journey and then dives into why positive reinforcement training (and practices under that "umbrellas") are often limiting, ineffective and/or counter-productive with dogs over 6 months. It finishes with an introduction into cognitive behavioural therapy and UPWARD Dogology.SHOW NOTES:Connect with Small Dog Rescue BC!https://www.facebook.com/377401022288720/photos/3224550720907055/https://www.smalldogrescuebc.com/Honorable Mentions:Size Small Dog Rescue Inc. In this VETgirl online veterinary continuing education podcast, we review the difference between dogs and cats in the veterinary setting. As the old saying goes… ”cats are not small dogs!” The question remains, what does that really mean? They can both be small. They can both be fluffy. Catch them at the wrong time and they can both bite! But what does it mean when we say, “cats are not small dogs”? What we are referring to is the medical response to disease as we compare our feline and canine patients. Our feline patients have unique physiologic responses to shock, medications, fluid therapy, and even neoplasia as compared to the canine patient. As a result, it is crucial that the veterinary team understands these unique feline characteristics!

Victoria Lee, founder of Elliot's Little Dog Haven (ELDH) in New Hampshire, talks to us about rescuing those harder to adopt dogs -- senior dogs, or dogs with special needs. ELDH not only provides sanctuary for these dogs, who come from rescues from all over the country, but ELDH places some of the dogs in a very innovative way. They match senior dogs with senior citizens who might not be able to afford to keep a pet. ELDH pays for medical needs for the dogs and more. Listen in, and learn about the compassionate care ELDH gives to the neediest pets, who still have lots of love and life in them.

Marcy from Avidog International says to make training the “wee ones” a game
What happens when people treat their small dogs like babies
Recently, I’ve been helping a little girl named Luna through our boot camp. As I was working with Luna, I realized that 80% of the dogs we work with are medium or large dogs, and only about twenty percent would be called small dogs. People who are interested in finding a dog trainer here in Salt Lake City often ask if we even train small dogs at all! Of course, we do work with small dogs. Unfortunately, we talk to much fewer people who are interested in training their smaller dogs. I think that there are a few reasons for that trend. For one, it’s easier to overlook misbehavior from a small dog. If a little dog jumps on you, that’s noticeably less of a problem than having a hundred-pound dog jump on you. Likewise, if a little dog poops in your house, that’s obviously not the same as an eighty-pound German Shepherd pooping in your house. That means that a lot of people overlook these problems when it comes to training their small dogs. But I think this attitude does a huge disservice to these small dogs. If you think about it, small dogs have a more inherently difficult time in the world because everything is so much larger than them. Think of it like this: if you’re an eighty-pound dog, you’re on par with a child or a piece of furniture, you can easily reach people’s waists, and you’re generally on the same size plane as the objects surrounding you. If you’re a tiny fifteen-pound dog, however, you don’t fit as easily into a human world.

Could it be that there is a Tyranny of Small Dogs? Tyranny not because the dogs themselves are doing anything wrong. Quite the opposite; small dogs seem to have a tremendous capacity to lull us humans into thinking that we don’t have to work with them like we would a larger breed. Somehow we expect them to be great little dogs just because they are small and cute and we get to cuddle them. And that could be working against them if we are not giving them the training and structure they need. Questions or Comments? Take Me Home - Pet Adoption and Animal Rescue - Pets & Animals on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)
Susan Daffron talks to Ellen Lockwood from the Diamond Dachshund Rescue of Texas about two dogs named Kaaz and Oscar. Kaaz is available for adoption and Oscar is in permanent foster care. Although Oscar has found a home, Ellen wanted to share his story because he represents the forgiving nature of the animals you often find in rescue. His story is on the Web site and involves terrible past abuse by a prior owner, which has left him with permanent medical problems. Even after all he has been through, you can see the love in his eyes. Although Oscar has found a permanent living situation, Kaaz is still looking for a perfect forever home. Kaaz came from a terrible living situation where the other dogs actually died from mistreatment. As the sole survivor, he came into rescue with a severe case of mange, skin infections, and giardia. Although he has been enjoying life in foster care in rescue, his compromised immune system probably also resulted in a case of kidney stones, which required surgery. However, he has been treated at the vet and now has a clean bill of health. He will need to eat a special kidney to reduce the chance of this kidney problem happening again in his future, but he's ready for his new home home. Kaaz is only about 3 years old and has many years of love left to give! Learn why some small dogs snap and growl and how to prevent it.
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and perhaps this is illustrated in no better way than in the love story between Rick Caran and his wonder Yorkie, "Jilli Dog." Little did Rick know that the wet, dirty and scared little dog abandoned not far from his Long Island, New York home would lead him on the adventure of a lifetime, taking him around the world for her poker-playing abilities and general above-average intelligence. But how did Rick, who never trained dogs professionally, teach Jilli to do such amazing things? Rick confesses to Pets In the City that there’s just one thing any pet lover can see in their pet, and once they see it, the sky’s the limit. Next- if you think setting up a dog park in the big city is easy, listen in as we talk to Laurie Light, one of the founders of the NYC East Side Small Dog Group in Manhattan. Her candid, cautionary tale is as funny as it is inspiring. You’ll never look at a little dog (or the person walking him or her) the same again! And, of course, we’ll give you the "Pets In the City" highlight of pet events in and around New York -- lets just say Santa ‘Claws’ is coming to town!
