In this bonus episode, Tony and his guests the veterinary scientist Daniel Mills and dog historian Stephanie Howard-Smith discuss how our attitudes toward dogs, and mourning their deaths, have evolved. We hear about the dog paintings of Edwin Landseer from Stephanie and how dogs read human emotions and 'love' us in their own way from Daniel. Together they discuss how growing empathy, affluence, and changing culture have transformed our bond with dogs from practical companionship to heartfelt connection, whose loss is deeply felt and openly mourned. As Stephanie says, ‘would it be heaven if your dog wasn't there?' Tony is a great dog lover but sadly since he made ‘Do Our DOGS Really Love Us?' In Series 1 he lost his beloved Holly-Berry, a rescue Westie. He has since tried another dog ‘adoption' which didn't work out so well, so today, Tony wants to explore how and why dogs have become the ‘perfect' pets and our sentimental attachments to them in life and death. How and do we bond with our dogs, and why is it so difficult when we don't? In this 'dogcast', Tony is exploring humanity's deep and complex relationship with dogs: from the ancient domestication of wolves to our modern emotional bonds with fashionable breeds with the veterinary behaviourist Prof Daniel Mills and Dr Stephanie Howard-Smith, a cultural historian of dogs and their humans. People ask me all the time: what is small dog syndrome? Maybe you've seen a Chihuahua who barks at everything or a Yorkie that charges at bigger dogs. Too often, these little pups get labeled as a “small mean dog” – but that reputation isn't the full story. In this episode, I explain exactly what is small dog syndrome, why it happens, and most importantly, how to train small dogs so they're confident instead of cranky. With the right approach, you can prevent those common frustrations and enjoy life with a calm, cooperative companion. Here's what I'll cover: Why small dog syndrome shows up more often in toy breeds than in larger dogs The truth behind the “small mean dog” label and how to rewrite the story Everyday strategies for building confidence and independence in little dogs Smart socialization techniques that prevent small dog syndrome before it starts Proven tips on how to train small dogs so they thrive in the real world By the end, you'll not only know what is small dog syndrome, you'll also have clear steps on how to train small dogs with positive reinforcement so they grow into calm, capable adults.

Bernadette Tow had always wanted a dachshund but didn't grow up with dogs. Her husband surprised her about five years ago with the option of bringing home a puppy, and raising Hershey inspired her to learn more about dog training and behavior. After a career switch, she earned a Diploma in Canine Behaviour Science and Technology (Dip. CBST) from CASI (Companion Animal Sciences Institute), and is studying with the Academy for Dog Trainers. "Can't we get a little respect?!" Our pint-sized companions often don't get the respect they deserve, a topic we dive into with Abbey Johnson, a keen advocate for small dogs. I grew up surrounded by dogs, cats, horses, and various other types of animals throughout my childhood onwards. The more time I spend with animals, the more I realize the disconnected communication we often tend to have with them. Animals, and dogs especially, are always talking to us. It's our job to stop, listen, and kindly teach them about our human world!I have an extensive background working with shelter and rescue dogs. Stemming from this comes my special love for small breed dogs, and although I work with all dogs from Chihuahuas to Great Danes, I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people reach their full potential with their small breed dogs, who can often be overlooked and misunderstood. I strive to make my two rescued small breed dogs, Phoebe and Pocket, an example to the fact that small dogs are just as trainable and just as deserving of a fulfilled life as any other dog! We spend most of our days learning tricks, practicing nosework, adventuring out in nature, or curled up watching movies on the couch.I graduated in 2018 with my Bachelor's in Psychology from Auburn University, and continued on to work for over 5 years in animal sheltering/rescue, where I generated a lot of experience handling various dogs with different degrees of behavioral needs. From there, I pursued my passion for training by becoming a multi-certified professional dog trainer, and haven't looked back! I strive to be approachable, accessible, and non-judgemental when working with clients. In episode 34 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we are talking about dogs once again! Usually, when we are on the trail, we are used to seeing large or medium-sized dogs, but dogs of all sizes enjoy hiking and playing outside. If you are someone with a small dog and you want to integrate them into your outdoor activities, this is the episode for you. As you know, I am a very proud dog mom to three large dogs, and although I might have a few tips about hiking with dogs, I'm definitely not an expert and I am very uneducated when it comes to working with smaller breeds. That's why I was excited to sit down and chat with Jessica Williams and get her tips for taking small dogs on outdoor adventures. Jessica has been camping and hiking with her Dachshunds for over 15 years and worked in the environmental conservation field for over 18. Ten years ago, Jessica launched the award-winning blog You Did What With Your Wiener?, merging her passion and experience with Dachshunds, outdoor recreation, and the environment. Since then, she has inspired small dogs and their owners around the world to explore the outdoors and put more adventure into their lives.
