You would think the most brilliant of entrepreneurs would rarely face failure. After all, didn't they just come up with one genius idea and money started flooding in? Not the case for Netflix co-founder, Marc Randolph. The truth? Marc was told, “That will never work,” more times than he could count. In this vulnerable conversation, Marc shares the challenges and harsh rejection he faced during the early days of Netflix and peels back the curtain of the often-glamorized world of entrepreneurship. And he says the problems you see every day in your business or your job could be your golden ticket to big profits. Subscribe and listen now to this special replay episode with Marc on Apple Podcasts and Spotify! You Will Learn That: You build skills by doing them Pain is the parent to ideas Entrepreneurship is a grind There is no easy way There's always a reason not to do something Why you should think less and do more If you wait, you're too late Nobody knows anything Quotes: “The way you learn to make better decisions is by making decisions.” – Marc Randolph “Start small, build momentum. And that allows you to bet on yourself and place bigger bets because you can be confident in your own abilities.” – Derrick Kinney “Once you've learned to really articulate the problem and see the problem clearly, almost without even thinking about it, ideas begin popping into your mind.” – Marc Randolph “And it was this realization at that moment that there was no easy way. And, as my Dad used to say, ‘Sometimes the only way out is through.'” – Marc Randolph “If you don't start, you're never going to get anywhere. There's always a reason not to do something.” – Marc Randolph “So, the lesson there is, you can't over commit. Whatever you think is an overcommitment is probably just barely enough to land that trick.” – Marc Randolph “The uncertainty is everything. If you wait until you can see around the corner enough to be confident that your idea is going to work, I guarantee you're too late.” – Marc Randolph “The most important skill of a good entrepreneur is, are they creative and clever enough to figure out ways to try their ideas that are quick, simple, and cheap? Most of us live mindlessly. This is a natural adaptation to the demands of our daily lives. We are distracted from the moment we get up til the moment we go to bed. Our minds are always whirling with deadlines, errands, people, and thoughts we have about it all. Additionally, we are almost always multitasking. We have our music on while driving, checking our emails while on the phone, cooking while trying to clean up and have a conversation. Our attention is rarely focused on just one thing at a time, which makes it impossible to be fully immersed in all of the things we are doing. Mindfulness is slowing down some of what we are doing and focusing on one thing at a time. While it is very difficult to be fully present every waking moment, we can work to cultivate some more mindfulness in some small moments of our day. With practice, these small moments of mindfulness can carry over into the rest of our lives, and help us to be more present in our days. Tell me about your mindfulness practice . . . O - observation F - feeling/emotions N - need R - request S - stop/pause T - thoughts O - observe sensations/physical P - proceed with awareness H - are you Hungry A - are you Angry L - are you Lonely T - are you Tired Plain and Simple: A Woman's Journey to the Amish The Mindfulness Solution : Everyday Practices for Everyday Problems

Success needs clues and we are here to help you find them.Today's clue is provided to us by Dr Wayne Dyer, let's listen together.Once we have decided to live an intentional committed life, it can become very easy to fall back into old habits.Do not revert to your comfort zone. Remember that you are the solution, everything starts from within. We see this when we say, “change the way you look at things and the things you look at will change.”You have the choice to make, the choice to see every struggle and challenge as a negative, the choice to be blind and not learn the lesson, the choice to decide on the way in which you will respond or react.Everything starts within, self-talk, thoughts, feelings, and the way in which we perceive life.To quote Napoleon Hill, “see it, believe it, achieve it”. See yourself as a success, believe you are a success and achieve the success. The moment you decided to be committed, consistent and intentional, you became a success.

Human beings are evolutionarily hard-wired to compete with one another, and this drive to compete encourages us to compare our standing to that of our fellows and despair when we don't match up. This “compare and despair” mindset can lead to unworkable or harmful cycles of behavior that leave us feeling worse-than-ordinary. Ron Siegel, author of The Extraordinary Gift of being Ordinary, is faculty at Harvard Medical School and teaches internationally about mind-body medicine and the application of mindfulness and compassion practices in psychotherapy and other fields. On this episode of POTC, Ron talks with Yael about why being ordinary is actually an extraordinary gift! When Kelley Higney moved to Florida, she knew she'd face some challenges: She was a young mother in a new state. She was in a new house in a new town. But there was one problem she didn't expect: her daughter's severe reactions to mosquito bites. Higney would watch helplessly as her six-month-old daughter's limbs would swell just minutes after being bitten. After trying everything she could – every ointment, every gimmick – Higney knew she was going to have to find an answer on her own. She did some research, and found an answer in a strange little tube: a suction tool that could pull the venom and saliva out of the bite, stopping the allergic reaction before it even had the chance to start. “I started testing with just this one little sample I had purchased on friends and family,” Higney said. “Everybody was getting similar reactions and that's when I'm like, okay, maybe I'm onto something. So I was able to get in touch with the factory. I pitched them my idea. I told them that every mom and everybody that was suffering here needed to know about this product because it's, it was life-changing for me and my family.”So how did Kelley take a quest to help her daughter and turn it into a powerhouse company with products in 25,000 retailers and 25 different countries? Find out on this week's episode of The Journey.Main Takeaways:Don't Be Afraid to Start Small: Good ideas rarely explode overnight, and good entrepreneurs know the value of a slower start. Most businesses need to grow and evolve slowly, and it's an entrepreneur's job to find customers whoever and wherever possible, even if it means pitching and selling at a local market or your child's school functions.Surround Yourself with People Who Can Help You Grow: Regardless of when or if your business takes off, you need to have a network of people to lean on and learn from. Find people you admire — even within your own family — and tap into them for advice, feedback, or support to take your business to the next level.Protect Your Product: Good ideas and successful products will always be met with copycats. To ensure that those imitators don't steal your market share, do your homework and take the steps necessary to protect yourself.---This season of the Journey is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by UPS. Rather, as he puts it in the introduction to the volume, you should take your medications if you really need them, but once your brain is back to a normal functionality you will likely still be faced with the same existential problems that plague most human beings. And that's where philosophy might help. Lou Marinoff is the Chair of the Department of Philosophy at The City College of New York and a founder of the American Philosophical Practitioners Association. His other books include "The Middle Way: Finding Happiness in a World of Extremes" and "Therapy for the Sane." Sped up the speakers by

The game of Chutes and Ladders, originally invented in India and known for the snakes instead of chutes, is a great allegory for life. With the luck of the draw, you get a leg up when you land on the ladder only to be taken down a several notches often to an irretraceable set back. It takes a lot of mental maneuvering and an executive control to handle the frustration of sliding down from 87 to 24 and to patiently wait to rise up again or watch others win. And it's true wisdom to not lose sight that after all, it's just a game! On this podcast, our guest, Dr. Ronald D. Siegel, a renowned author, psychotherapist, and great teacher of mindfulness practices will discuss how mindful self-regulation is the seat of resiliency and how it allows us to gain a sense of equilibrium.About Dr. Ronald SiegelDr. Ronald D. World-class athletes, politicians, artists, and even entrepreneurs have fallen from grace because of their personal salacious digressions or public tantrums. The talent that makes them rich and famous is not the same talent that helps them ward off the chaos in their vulnerable mind. The emotional brain is inherently wired to duck from social perils or to protect itself from the painful misery of negative experiences. If mindlessness is at the heart of impulsive, silly, or even dumb mistakes then it's the well-cultivated mindfulness that insulates the human being from thoughtless words, judgmental attitudes, or harmful actions. On today's podcast, our guest Dr. Ronald D. Siegel from Harvard University and author of Essential Skills for Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy, will discuss the link between emotional-regulation and Executive Function and the path to well-being through mindfulness.About Dr. Ronald SiegelDr. Ronald D. “Fun, insightful, straightforward advice that can make your family life happier.” – KJ Dell’Antonia, New York Times Well Family columnist "I ask three things of the books I read. I want to learn something, I want to laugh, and, when a book is really special, I get to forge a personal connection with a writer for as long as I turn the pages. Catherine Pearlman has given me all three in this book, and much more. She’s given me a resource I will refer back to over and over again, both as a writer and a parent." – Jessica Lahey, Author, New York Times bestseller The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed About IGNORE IT! Kids have an uncanny knack for knowing the exact combination of actions necessary to drive their siblings – and parents – to their knees. Whether they delight in asking “why” ad nauseum, relish the hysteria they can provoke in their sister with an imperceptible glance, or thrill at the nightly pre-bath chase, our kids know how to push our limits. Faced with similar scenarios, many parents will resort to yelling or giving in, but it turns out these responses only make this irritating behavior worse. That’s why leading parenting expert Catherine Pearlman suggests a seemingly unconventional, yet remarkably effective approach in IGNORE IT! How Selectively Looking the Other Way Can Decrease Behavioral Problems and Increase Parenting Satisfaction (a TarcherPerigee paperback; on sale August 8, 2017). Drawing on her own experience with her children and the success stories of her clients, Pearlman demonstrates how selectively ignoring not only relieves parents from nagging, but also allows kids to actually learn from their mistakes. In this easy-to-navigate guidebook, readers will learn: How to eliminate problem behavior in just a few days What behaviors are appropriate to ignore, and what to do when ignoring is not an option How to use time-outs effectively, so they don’t become a battle of wills How to create a reward system that actually works What to do when mom and dad are not on the same page when it comes to discipline An essential toolkit for frustrated, stressed-out parents, IGNORE IT! offers actionable, proven techniques that will help readers improve their kids’ behavior and put the joy back in parenting. About the Author: DR. CATHERINE PEARLMAN is the founder of The Family Coach, a private practice specializing in helping families resolve everyday problems related to discipline, sleep, and sibling rivalry, among other issues. She is the proud parent of a son in elementary school and a daughter in middle school. Her syndicated Dear Family Coach column has appeared in The Wall Street Journal and many regional parenting magazines. She has appeared on Today and her advice has been featured in Parenting, Men's Health, CNN.com, and The Huffington Post.
