Lee explores the concept of operational excellence through the lens of two renowned entrepreneurs, Steve Jobs and Richard Branson. He talks about the importance of connecting the dots in operational excellence, drawing on the wisdom of Jobs and Branson. Through examples and practical insights, listeners are encouraged to connect the dots between tools, behaviours, and environments to drive success in business operations. The episode underscores the need to start with the end in mind, as advocated by Stephen Covey, and to always be connecting dots to create a conducive environment for achieving business goals. KEY TAKEAWAYS Continuous Improvement: The key habit within operational excellence is the habit of continuous improvement, engaging people, and striving for excellence in all aspects of the business. Connecting Dots: The importance of connecting the dots between different elements in a system to achieve a particular destination, as emphasised by successful entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs and Richard Branson. Reflecting Backwards: Understanding that one can only join the dots looking backwards, as plans may change and evolve, highlighting the importance of reflection and learning from past experiences. Creating the Right Environment: Focusing on creating the ideal environment through connecting the right dots, including leadership behaviours, visual performance boards, and metrics, to drive engagement and achieve business targets. Start with the End in Mind: Emphasising the concept of starting with the end goal in mind and connecting the dots looking back to create a path towards success and making a difference in the business. Lee Judge is a keynote speaker, a creative marketer, a DJ, and currently the CEO of Content Monsta, a digital media company based in Atlanta. Lee was my first mentor when I moved down to Atlanta in 2022 and we've stayed close ever since. So, it was only right that my first episode off the rip would be with my man right here. In this episode, we begin by learning how Lee grew up on a large production chicken and tobacco farming North Carolina, how that was his first foray in entrepreneurship, and later how he first got into radio and production at Eastern Carolina University. After moving to Atlanta to make his run at the music producing business, Lee realized that if he transitioned into marketing automation and marketing operations, he could build on what he had already been doing. And that's ultimately how Content Monsta was born – out of necessity. The COVID-19 pandemic suddenly made remote production a must-have, and Lee capitalized on it. Lee also shares his go-to song on the dance floor to get people moving when he DJs, and what it was like growing up as a Black man on a farm in North Carolina and witnessing systemic racism. One of the most poignant points of the interview comes when he opines on the saying “I don't see color” and why that is a harmful thing to say, even if you don't intend to do harm or realize it. Finally, Lee wraps up with some tips on public and keynote speaking, what makes a great storyteller, and finally, he shares his realest talk. Shoutout to Lee for taking the time to rap with me one time in the studio, and thanks for being my guy down here. It's hard to find good people but you're a real one, Lee. All love. ABOUT THE EPISODE:Years before his gender transition, Jordan Held still remembers the day he asked his employer if he could wear the same clothing as the male faculty. The reply: "We're not ready for that yet." Whether or not your young person is questioning their sexual identity, gender, pronouns or any other aspect of themselves, you'll get so much from this important conversation. As a teenager, he had been a good student and athlete who just wanted to be the popular girl at school. He wore clothes that weren't comfortable, drank, smoked weed, hooked up with people he had no real interest in, and generally tried to fit in. But after college, Jordan met a trans man for the first time and many of the puzzle pieces from his early life began to fall into place. While the administration of the school where he worked felt "not ready" for Jordan to dress as male faculty, he knew he couldn't live his life as a lie forever. The administration's denial was a catalyst for redirecting his life course.Jordan Held now has a Masters degree in both Social Welfare and Sports Leadership, and a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology. He's worked in residential mental health treatment, as well as the world's largest gender clinic, giving him a great deal of experience with the most pressing issues affecting teens and young adults - especially those who are exploring their sexual identity. As a private practice therapist, Jordan has deep expertise in gender and sexual minority youth with complex histories of PTSD and trauma. Many have been in substance use treatment programs as well. In this episode, we discuss why some young people are going "stealth", the post-pandemic spread of school avoidance, why kids don't even consider marijuana a drug any more, and how parenting without shame creates bonds of trust that leave families stronger in difficult times.EPISODE RESOURCES:Jordan Held LinkedInPsychology TodayNetflix show, DisclosureThis podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsFind us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate. Hi and welcome to the OWN IT podcast, where we celebrate the growing number of (women and non-binary) ad agency owners and talk about buying out of the boys' club of advertising, one agency at a time. I'm Christy Hiler, owner of Cornett and today, we're talking to Sue Kramer of Connecting Dots Guru. Sue is a filmmaker and screenwriter who proudly wears the title of creative disruptor. The first part of her career was spent as a successful screenwriter. She also directed the film Gray Matters with A-list stars like Heather Graham, Tom Cavanaugh and Sissy Spacek. She transitioned to owning an agency after taking time off to raise her daughter. But every time she switched from one hat to another, she had doubters and explained to me that doubt is a gender bias. I love her explanation of that in our conversation. There's a lot to dig into here. Sue is also a Latina activist who created the “Be Dope. Vote” campaign and platform in 2020. Voting, you'll hear, is a major pursuit in her life. And … she's a dancer! I told you there was a lot to cover! Enjoy my conversation with Sue Kramer. Thanks for listening to this episode of OWN IT. You can find links to Sue Kramer's LinkedIn profile and Connecting Dots Guru website in our show notes at untilyouownit.com. If you're enjoying Own It, please find it on your favorite podcast app and drop us a rating and review. Those help more people discover the show and join our community. Also, if you're a female or non-binary agency owner, or you want to own an agency someday, join our growing community at that same address … untilyouownit.com.

Ryan Rodney, a 35-year-old entrepreneur, has built the ultimate “man-cave.” His company, Riverbound Custom Storage and RV Park provides hundreds of units for those seeking a place to store their treasured items, all while also offering space for those seeking a getaway in their RVs. How did he come to have such a niche idea in his community? By turning his childhood love of visiting the lake into a viable, and extremely profitable business idea. Rodney started his work at a young age. He worked for a golf manufacturer company for several years until the owner decided to retire. Rodney knew then it was his time to step out on his own. “I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to be in a place to make my own decisions and build something for the future.” After spending some time thinking about his life direction, he scribbled an idea on the back of a napkin. “I realized that our area didn't have enough storage for our boats and toys, so I decided to open up a one-of-a-kind boat storage facility.” That was in 2017. By 2018, he broke ground on the first stage of his 160-acre development off of Highway 95 near Lake Havasu City, Arizona. After two and a half years of construction, he opened doors for his storage facility on July 4, 2020. This business, however, was like no other storage facility. to be special. After years of planning and building, he had built a true man cave. With boat storage, enclosed storage, a driving range, pool, convenience store and more – this facility is the perfect getaway. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mentors/support
