“Blue state pension funds are doubling down on sustainability while red state pension funds are firing you. Companies are challenged because for some constituencies, they have to demonstrate their sustainability credentials, and for others, they have to hide them. So it's a really challenging time. But if you can demonstrate the business case, then maybe you can navigate being more proactive with those constituencies that really want this, and alleviating the risks with those constituencies that don't understand why it matters.” Tensie Whelan on Electric Ladies Podcast Mother Nature isn't waiting for politics to catch up – business leaders know it. Building companies that stand the test of time and create lasting value for their stakeholders, no matter which way the political winds blow, is the true measure of strategy and vision. Listen to Tensie Whelan, Founding Director of the NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business. Drawing on extensive research across a range of industries from consumer goods to agriculture, Tensie speaks to Joan about how businesses can strengthen the financial case for sustainability and enhance their communications. You'll hear about: The nine key factors that drive financial value through sustainability. How to build a strong business case for sustainability. What effective sustainability messaging looks like. Plus, career advice for mid-career women in sustainability or those looking to break into the field. “If you're working strictly in a business function, but would like to have more impact, see if you can work for a business who's doing some innovative work around sustainability. The sustainability team is always looking for partners. So there's an opportunity for you to get more experience and over time, potentially parlay your job into more sustainability work. Secondly, you could get on a board, a non-profit board that does a lot of work on environmental or just sustainability with corporates. “My whole career, I've advanced [because] I've always seen where the holes were, how to look at problem with an opportunity mindset and volunteer to attack that opportunity and be willing to take a risk to do that and feel comfortable, which women struggle with at times.” Tensie Whelan on Electric Ladies Podcast You'll also like: Alison Ward, CEO of CottonConnect, on how female farmers are transforming cotton. On this week's guest episode I chat with Tensie Whelan, a Clinical Professor of Business and Society and the Director of NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business. Many people think that sustainability and profits don't align, but Tensie takes us through how they can by connecting the financial sustainability of a business to the social and environmental sustainability of a business's core focus. She believes companies should make money by doing better. She also runs through the flaws of the broader ESG framework, suggesting ways to improve it. Before she built the Center for Sustainable Business at NYU Stern, Tensie ran the Rainforest Alliance - a multinational non-profit designed to help conserve rainforests. We dive into that issue and touch on ways to tackle it as well These are some fascinating and important topics that I think every entrepreneur should think about. I hope you enjoy it. Tensie Whelan is the Director of the Center for Sustainable Business and a Clinical Professor of Business and Society at NYU Stern School of Business. At NYU, she advocates for sustainable practices and equips students to address environmental challenges in their future positions. In her own career, Tensie has 25 years of experience working with national and international organizations on issues of sustainability. Before starting at NYU, Tensie worked as the President of the Rainforest Alliance for much of her career, growing the organization from $4.5 million to $50 million. She also continues to serve as a Board Member for GlobeScan, which helps different institutions grow their brand and sustainability efforts. In this episode… Sustainability efforts are more important than ever. The environment continues to suffer as more and more problems arise from human exploitation. Yet in the world of business, sustainability is often a hot-button topic, typically seen as an impediment rather than a companion. It can be difficult to change any minds — but it's not impossible. Tensie Whelan has worked in sustainability organizations for most of her life. She spent 15 years as the President of the Rainforest Alliance and now works at NYU as a professor and director. Her goal is to educate and guide the upcoming generation of business leaders to see the value and importance of sustainability. She not only believes that change is possible, but crucial for the future. So what does all of that look like in practice? Dov Pollack invites Tensie Whelan, the Director of the Center for Sustainable Business at NYU, to talk about the needed intersection between sustainability and the future of business. She dives into a host of topics, from persuading board members to developing an internal culture of environmentalism. They also discuss what's on the horizon for sustainability and diversity in the business world. Find out more by tuning in to this episode of Next Wave Leadership.

My guest for this episode is Tensie Whelan, Clinical Professor for Business and Society and the Director of NYU Stern’s Center for Sustainable Business. We start with an examination of the importance of monetizing the benefits of sustainability efforts to successfully embed the practices into the heart of the firms’ strategy and measure of economic performance. We then have a lively discussion on the promises and perils of relying on consumer demand to encourage firms to act in responsible ways. We wrap up with a discussion of the role of the state versus the firm in setting the rules of competitive markets. Tensie and I talked about wine, creating and changing habits, and eating bugs, which happens when you work with the Rainforest Alliance. We also talk about dealing with people when you change, influencing them, and perspectives that make these things work. The people she influences run multi-billion dollar companies.Tensie described and lives the point of this podcast: a lifetime of acting on your values, what you care about, not imposing on others, and having fun.I didn't hear a whisper of guilt, blame, doom, gloom, helplessness, despair, or what many people associate with acting on the environment.I talk to a lot of people who say that they're doing all they can for the environment---usually people still with a lot of easy changes they'd probably like once they did them.Despite all she's done, she found something she could work on. However modest, it didn't stop anything else. On the contrary, it led to more---more self-awareness, fun, interacting with others, and leading others. When you expect the change to improve your life, you find more. Tensie is helping unravel my preconceived notions of academics focusing more on facts than action.Maybe because she was President of the Rainforest Alliance. Maybe because I met her when she brought the U.N. Secretary General to NYU.You'll hear other global organizations and people she's influenced, led, and collaborated with in a remarkable and effective career so far.She brings a new perspective on leading organizations to this podcast, as I've mostly focused on leading people. She shares stories that massive change is possible. She lived it. She talks experience, not just theory. She also shares practical advice and histories of what worked and what takes more patience since it's not easy. Always dealing with people. Some points you'll hear from her work:- Effective leadership is rarely, if ever, about being right.- Empathy helps lead about people and organizations. You still have to understand organizations as you do people.- It's hard in practice -- emotionally, internally. Maintaining integrity while empathizing with people doing things you disagree with.- But if you want change, being effective is more important than venting.A younger, angrier, less skilled me would only think to protest organizations I disagreed with. As she shares, confrontation is still important, but also to engage and lead.Hard work is exciting. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
