In a world of rising tariffs and supply chain disruption, could circularity be one of the smartest business moves a company can make? Danielle Holly, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's North America Lead, is joined by Tensie Whelan, founder of the Center for Sustainable Business at NYU Stern and former President of the Rainforest Alliance, to explore this and more. Tensie explains the ROSI (Return on Sustainability Investment) framework, developed at NYU Stern to help companies track and monetise the full value of sustainability strategies. This includes operational efficiency, risk reduction, new revenue and customer loyalty. Together, they explore how circular approaches can shorten supply chains and reduce exposure to tariffs and geopolitical shocks. They also tackle the harder questions: why do most companies still not act, even when the numbers stack up? And what will it take to bring finance, governance and the boardroom along for the journey? Sign up to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's North America newsletter to keep up with the latest on circularity in North America. In this episode of Superpowers for Good, Julie Colombino-Billingham, Founder and CEO of Deux Mains, an affordable luxury goods company manufacturing ethical products in Haiti, shares her inspiring story. Julie's work demonstrates how business can be a force for good, especially in one of the most economically challenged countries in the Western Hemisphere.Julie didn't arrive in Haiti to start a business. After the devastating 2010 earthquake, she deployed as a trained disaster responder to help with relief efforts. What began as a short-term mission turned into a life-changing journey. “The women of Haiti were so strong, so brave, and so courageous,” Julie explained. “I really just wanted to be like them…I ended up staying and living there for five years and starting this business.”Deux Mains, which means “two hands” in French, is a testament to the power of collaboration and perseverance. The company manufactures luxury handbags, wallets, and other leather goods using deadstock leather and materials from responsible tanneries. These products, crafted by Haitian artisans earning a fair wage, are now sold in major retailers like Nordstrom and Kohl's. Despite the country's instability, Deux Mains continues to thrive. “The business is not only growing but flourishing under the leadership of my Haitian colleagues,” Julie said.Beyond exporting chic handbags, Deux Mains has a significant local impact. Last year, they manufactured and distributed 10,000 pairs of leather school shoes for Haitian children. The factory, powered entirely by solar energy, employs 45 full-time staff and serves as a model for sustainable development in Haiti.Julie's story is one of transformation—both personal and collective. Her journey highlights how listening to the needs of a community can inspire lasting change. “A woman said to me, ‘Hey, white lady, I don't want water. I need a job,'” Julie recalled. That moment shifted her perspective from short-term aid to creating long-term economic opportunities.Deux Mains proves that ethical fashion can make a global impact while empowering local communities. Julie's vision serves as a powerful reminder that meaningful change begins when we listen, act with purpose, and invest in people.tl;dr:Julie Colombino-Billingham founded Deux Mains after witnessing Haiti's resilience following the 2010 earthquake.Deux Mains creates ethical, sustainable luxury goods while employing Haitian artisans earning a living wage. The company's solar-powered factory produces products sold globally, including in Nordstrom and Kohl's.Julie credits her success to listening deeply to community needs, focusing on long-term economic impact. The episode highlights Julie's superpower of listening, offering actionable tips for cultivating this skill. How to Develop Deep Listening As a SuperpowerJulie's superpower is her ability to listen deeply and empathetically, enabling her to understand and act on the real needs of others. Reflecting on her early days in Haiti, she shared a pivotal moment: “A woman said to me, ‘Hey, white lady, I don't want any water. I need a job.'” That simple yet profound statement transformed Julie's approach, shifting her focus from short-term disaster relief to launching Deux Mains, a business creating sustainable jobs for Haitians. Listening, as Julie explained, “revolutionized my experience and my participation.”Julie shared a story that exemplifies her superpower in action. Early in her time in Haiti, she grew frustrated with the mess in the factory, asking, “Why is everything always a mess here?” Her Haitian business partner, Jolina, calmly replied, “We don't have any garbage cans.” This moment reminded Julie to step outside her own frame of reference and truly listen to her colleagues. By addressing such a simple, overlooked need, she cultivated a culture of collaboration and respect that continues to define Deux Mains.Tips for Developing Deep Listening:Believe that everyone in the room has valuable insights to contribute.Step outside your own perspective to understand others' realities.Ask open-ended questions to uncover underlying needs and concerns.Build trust by acting on the feedback you receive.Practice humility when faced with solutions that challenge your assumptions.By following Julie's example and advice, you can make deep listening a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Carmen Gamma, director of circular design at fashion brand Eileen Fisher, joins Innovation Forum's Ellen Atiyah, to discuss how the brand's circularity programme began with simple take-back and has evolved into resale, remanufacturing and textile-to-textile recycling. They explore what it takes to scale circular systems across a business, the role of leadership and cross-team collaboration, and the technical, financial and policy barriers to building a truly circular fashion ecosystem.
I ADORE this episode, in which I talk to Louisa about making things by hand, including books! Louisa Owen Sonstroem considers garment-making skills to be deeply empowering. Louisa writes and teaches about patternmaking and hand stitching clothing. For most of a decade, she worked in technical design and patternmaking, most recently for Macy's and Eileen Fisher. Previous projects have included a self-published book called Hand Sewing Clothing: A Guide, as well as two seasons of “Patternmaking in Public Places,” an outreach project she started to democratize access to patternmaking skills. This year, Louisa is celebrating the August release of her newest book, The Handsewn Wardrobe: A Complete Guide to Making Your Own Clothes, from Patternmaking to the Finishing Stitches, in collaboration with Storey Publishing.https://theclothpurpose.substack.com/https://www.louisamerry.com/✏️ Writing in the Junkyard Online Writing Retreat! In this episode, Pauline sits down with fashion journalist and author Lauren Sherman to unpack one of culture's most enduring and complicated topics: sex. Specifically, what does it mean to be sexy in today's consumer marketplace? Using Sherman's book Selling Sexy: Victoria's Secret and the Unraveling of an American Icon (co-authored with Chantal Fernandez) as a jumping-off point, they trace the rise and fall of Victoria's Secret from its 1970s roots to its hyper-polished “angel” era and eventual cultural backlash. They explore how internal power dynamics, the male gaze, the #MeToo movement, and the shadow of Jeffrey Epstein all collided with Gen Z's changing relationship to sex and identity, alongside new marketing playbooks and social media.Along the way, they compare old standards of sexiness to new ones across industries (from fashion to autos), celebrities (from Rihanna to Kim Kardashian), and brands (from Calvin Klein to Byredo). Finally, they explore how certain 'unsexy' brands (like Talbot's and Eileen Fisher) might be revived by embracing modern ideals of beauty, aspiration, and consumer desire.

What if the very thing you think is holding back your creative business is actually your biggest competitive advantage? This episode completely reframes how we think about our location, moving from limitation to opportunity. Drawing from real examples including TOAST, Eileen Fisher, and my own journey building a seven-figure floral business from the countryside, we explore how distance from major hubs can become a powerful differentiator. Whether you're based somewhere rural, suburban, or simply outside the traditional industry centres, this episode shows you how to transform your location story into genuine business advantage. You'll discover why authenticity trumps convenience, how constraint breeds creativity, and practical strategies for leveraging your unique geographic perspective. This isn't about putting a positive spin on a problem, it's about recognising the genuine advantages you already possess. Notable Quotes: "Your location can become one of your most powerful differentiators in a crowded market. But this isn't about simply putting a positive spin on a problem. This is about recognising the genuine advantages you already have." "The moment you stop seeing your location as something to overcome and start seeing it as something to leverage, so much can change for you." Host Philip Berman talks to Maxine Bedat, Executive Director at New Standard Institute, the official sponsor of the Fashion Environmental Accountability Act, a new bill introduced into the California State Assembly at the start of February 2025 which, if enacted, would become the first law in the country to require brands to engage in “environmental due diligence” concerning their products and supply chains. Welcome back to another fabulous episode of the *Fashion Crimes Podcast* with your favorite personal stylist, Holly Katz! This week, we're diving into one of the hottest topics in fashion: “Building a Sustainable Wardrobe.” Whether you're eco-conscious or just want to make more intentional shopping decisions, Holly breaks down the essentials of ethical fashion, why fast fashion should be avoided, and how you can start curating a wardrobe that not only makes you look good but also feel good about your impact on the planet. Ready to level up your style game sustainably? Tune in for expert advice, personal insights, and the ultimate guide to shopping consciously! KEY TALKING POINTS: 1. What is a Sustainable Wardrobe? A sustainable wardrobe isn't just a buzzword—it's a thoughtful collection of clothing made with eco-friendly materials and produced in ways that minimize waste and pollution. Holly explains how it's not about having less but about shopping with intention and choosing items that align with ethical values. 2. The Dark Side of Fast Fashion Holly pulls back the curtain on the fast fashion industry, which is the second-largest polluter in the world (after the oil industry!). #notagoodlook She discusses the social and environmental costs of fast fashion, from underpaid workers in unsafe conditions to the massive waste generated by cheap, disposable clothing. 3. Shopping Vintage and Second-Hand Want to make a difference? Holly recommends starting with vintage and second-hand shopping. She highlights some of her favorite stores like “Madison & Fifth” (Episode 179), and “Ensemble Consignment Charleston” (EP 209). By choosing preloved items, you're giving new life to garments and reducing demand for new production. 4. Sustainable Brands to Know From Stella McCartney to Eileen Fisher, we introduce some incredible eco-friendly brands. Whether you're looking for high-fashion pieces or everyday essentials, below is a list of ethical labels that are perfect for starting and curating a sustainable wardrobe. Sustainable Brands to Explore: • Stella McCartney • Gabriella Hearst • Reformation • Eileen Fisher • Pangaia • Levi's • Patagonia • Pact • Everlane • Girlfriend Collective • Naadam • Nudie Jeans • Weft & Warp Denim • Collina Strada • Ekhaus Latta • Kotn Past Sustainable Episodes Mentioned: Episode 179: Interview with Chloe from Madison & 5th Episode 210: Interview with VienneMilano Luxury Hosiery Episode 147: Interview with Designer Marissa Wilson Episode 145: BILIBLOND Swimwear Episode 134: Dayo Women Episode 125: Designer Kiya Tomlin Holly's Shout-Outs of the Week! Thank you so much to Sticky Bakery in Toronto, Sarah and Catherine from St. Paul for always writing in! #lovethem Final Thoughts on Sustainable Fashion Holly wraps up the episode by sharing her personal philosophy: sustainable fashion isn't just a trend, it's a necessity. As consumers, we have the power to demand change from the fashion industry. By shopping consciously, whether through second-hand finds or eco-friendly brands, we can all make a positive impact. As no closet is "fast-fashion free", making small, intentional changes can and will go a long way. "Fashion should make you feel good inside and out. When we know better, we do better!"
