Episode Title:Breaking Out of Your Shell: Growing Your Beauty Business as a Shy EntrepreneurHost:Connie HolmPodcast:Outside the Treatment Room "Welcome to today's episode of Outside the Treatment Room, where we talk about the business side of the beauty industry. I'm your host, Connie Holm. If you're a shy entrepreneur and feel like your personality might be holding you back from growing your beauty business, this episode is for you!""Today, we're going to discuss how being shy doesn't have to stop you from building a thriving business. I'll be sharing strategies to help you push through your comfort zone, boost your confidence, and connect with clients in a way that feels genuine to you. I'm more of an extrovert, but I've worked with many introverted business owners, and I want to understand how shyness affects their journey."Segment 1: Embracing Your Shyness as a Strength "Let's start by addressing the idea that being shy is a weakness. It's not. Shy people often have strong listening skills, empathy, and the ability to build deep connections. These qualities can make you a fantastic beauty professional.""Clients value trust, and you don't have to be the most outgoing person to build that. Sincerity, attentiveness, and understanding are enough to earn your clients' trust.""Rather than trying to change your personality, lean into your natural qualities and offer a personalized, caring approach."Segment 2: Overcoming Shyness in Business Situations "Now, while it's important to embrace who you are, there will be situations where stepping out of your comfort zone is necessary for growth. Here are some practical strategies to help you overcome shyness."Practice Makes Progress"Start small by practicing conversations with friends or family. Pick a service and product you're confident talking about, and rehearse your pitch. As you gain experience, your confidence will grow.""Even though I'm more extroverted, I still get nervous at networking events. But stepping out of your comfort zone gets easier with time."Preparation is Key"Preparation can ease your nerves. For consultations or appointments, have a script or key points ready. Knowing what you want to say can help you feel more in control.""Before attending networking events, I prepared a short intro about myself and my business. Though it wasn't easy, it made things much more manageable."Set Goals to Push Boundaries"Set small goals like introducing yourself at a networking event or asking for client reviews. These small victories build confidence."Develop a Signature Service"Having a signature service can help you stand out. Whether it's laser treatments or permanent jewelry, let your work speak for itself. Your expertise will naturally attract clients."Segment 3: Marketing for the Shy Entrepreneur "Marketing can be challenging for shy entrepreneurs, especially when it involves putting yourself out there. But there are ways to market your business that don't require being the face of it."Focus on Visual Marketing"Let your results shine! Post before-and-after photos, share testimonials, or create videos of your treatments. You don't have to be in front of the camera—let your work speak for you."Leverage Online Communities"Join online groups like Facebook communities for beauty professionals. You can engage and offer advice without the pressure of public appearances."Email Marketing & Direct Communication"Email marketing allows you to connect with clients without public interactions. Send updates, offers, and personalized messages directly to their inbox."Quote of the Day "Today's quote is from Amy Schumer: 'So if you're an introvert like me, especially a female introvert, or a person who is expected to give away your energy to everyone else on the reg, I want to encourage you to find time to be alone. Don't be afraid to excuse yourself. Recharge for as long as you need. Lean up against a tree and take a break from the other bears. I'll be there too, but I promise not to bother you.'"Closing Thoughts "To wrap things up, your personality doesn't define your success. Shyness isn't a barrier to running a successful beauty business. With the right strategies, you can build a brand that clients love and trust.""Thank you for tuning into Outside the Treatment Room. We've discussed the silver tsunami on the show numerous times, the unprecedented rate of which employees are retiring. When engineers and other employees retire from companies, they take with them more than a set of gold cufflinks or an engraved plaque. In many cases, they also take with them wisdom and knowledge. Perhaps this is never truer than in the case of Mike Konrad's guest today. And who is that? Doug Pauls. Pauls holds a B.A. in chemistry and physics from Carthage College, and a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He worked nine years for the Navy, eight years as technical director of Contamination Studies Labs, and more than 20 years at Rockwell Collins (now Collins Aerospace), in the Advanced Operations Engineering group where he is a technical fellow and, a principal materials and process engineer. He was awarded the Rockwell Collins Arthur A. Collins Engineer of the Year Award in 2004 as well as numerous other awards. Paul is a longtime (well over 30 years) IPC chairman and was awarded the IPC's Hall of Fame Award in 2017. Most notably, he is known for his expertise in surface insulation resistance testing, cleaning and cleanliness assessment, conformal coatings, and how to investigate and qualify manufacturing processes. He has been a U.S. representative to ISO and IEC working groups on SIR, electromigration, and cleanliness reliability standards. He has participated in numerous national and international consortia on electronics manufacturing materials and processes. He recently led a team of SMEs to redefine the cleanliness provisions of J-STD-001, culminating in what is presently J-STD-001H. To take liberties with a famous Mark Twain quote “rumors of my retirement have been greatly exaggerated”. For several years now, I've heard rumors of Pauls' retirement. Well, that day has finally come. Konrad talks with Pauls about his long career within the electronics assembly industry: his triumphs and challenges, and his journey in this ever-changing, dynamic, and challenging industry. If you're new to this industry, stick around listen to Doug's advice to young people entering our world, the world of electronics assembly. 00:00:00 - Introduction to Doug Pauls' Career in the Electronic Assembly Industry 00:02:57 - Reliability Matters Podcast Introduction 00:06:04 - Sharing wisdom with early career individuals 00:09:34 - Hobbies Outside of Work 00:12:44 - The Minions and World Domination 00:16:23 - Overcoming Shyness through Theater and Public Speaking Lessons 00:19:41 - Lessons Learned from Skilled Trades People 00:23:03 - Working in the Department of the Navy 00:26:21 - Learning from Asking Questions and Trying New Things 00:29:38 - Learning from the Old Guys 00:33:05 - Participating in Standards Development 00:36:32 - The Power of Networking and Technical Committees 00:40:01 - The Value of Leadership Skills in Collaborative Industries 00:43:15 - Collaboration in the Electronics Industry 00:46:18 - Developing Valuable Skills in Problem-Solving 00:49:39 - Transitioning to Rockwell Collins 00:52:59 - The Four Pillars of Career Advancement at Collins Aerospace 00:56:32 - Finding Resources for Personal Growth 01:00:01 - Industry Updates and Resources 01:03:26 - The Value of Old Guy Stories 01:06:46 - The Importance of Understanding How Things are Made 01:10:08 - Retirement Plans, Consulting, and the Future 01:13:10 - An Unconventional Industry Presentation 01:15:59 - Thank You for Listening to the Reliability Matters Podcast

In this episode, Kate Baker, Head of Product globally, for the Alternatives business of HSBC Asset Management, shares some of the strategies that have helped and still help her overcome (or not) her own shyness. Tied in with this, Kate, drawing on her personal life and work experiences, recognises that none of us should be treated any differently because of our roles or status, nor whether we are introvert or extrovert, shy or bold, and reflects on how to create a space 'in the room' for yourself and others. About Kate Baker Kate is currently Head of Product globally, for the Alternatives business of HSBC Asset Management. Since then we have had so many amazing guests and discussed important topics, especially for introverts. This show is all about the strengths and needs of introverts. "Instead of getting caught in perfection and overanalyzing, just post. You're not going to get a one hit wonder, you're going to be a wonderful wonder because people are getting really good value." -Sri Mahabir Are you camera shy? You know, the type of person who's afraid of their own reflection in a mirror or on social media—but not because it's creepy but because you think you will never look good enough or that you might make a mistake and people will laugh at you. The internet has been a huge game-changer for our lives. But with all the new and exciting things that come with technology, it's easy to forget that there's still some stuff out there that we don't have—like the ability to actually see ourselves without having to look at our screens. Whatever happens, it's always best to remember that your tribe will love your imperfections. In this episode, Daniel sits with video visibility coach, Sri Mahabir to discuss how we can overcome camera shyness and our insecurities. They also discuss how powerful a simple live can be, why be persistent in our goal, why our story matters, where entrepreneurs fail, what content to create, what self-investment can do for us, and what Sri can say about giving up. When expectations are not set, people will default to the path of least resistance. Bold people are never the ones who stop themselves. They wait for others to try and stop them. Underconfident people talk themselves out of what they want. “I'm not smart enough. People will think XX of me. I'm afraid I'm going to fail” You are not generically Shy, sometimes you exhibit shy behavior and you can try to act on that behavior less often. When meeting people you are interested in, pursue only the outcome of human connection. Don't set high expectations for the conversation. Start there and you might get to what those high expectations might be after you make that initial connection. When your negative inner voice is telling you what people might think of you, ask yourself if that is factual. Is that certain? When things don't go as planned, ask yourself how this can become an opportunity. Instead of assuming people are going to think, direct the mishap into something relatable to connect with your audience. The PRIDE method Prepare Yourself Relax Insights into yourself control the Dosage instead of going 0-100 Exercises of boldness Try to smile at everyone you meet. When they don't smile back at your, don't take that negativity on. Boldness is allowing yourself to step in and begin.
