Three-time GRAMMY winner and musical omnivore Bruce Hornsby chats about his wide-ranging career, from pop to bluegrass to jazz! PART ONE:Paul and Scott talk about their Instagram, a wild Genesis fact, and more. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Bruce HornsbyABOUT BRUCE HORNSBY:Thirteen-time Grammy nominee and three-time winner Bruce Hornsby has built one of the most diverse, collaborative, and adventurous careers in contemporary music. In the early 1980s Bruce was writing songs, playing sessions as a musician, and touring as member of Ambrosia and, later, Sheena Easton's backing band. By the middle of the decade he'd formed the group Bruce Hornsby and the Range, signed a deal with RCA Records, and released his debut album, which spawned the hit singles “The Way It Is,” “Mandolin Rain,” and “Every Little Kiss.” As a result, Bruce and the band won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1987. Their sophomore album, Scenes from the Southside, spawned the hit single “The Valley Road” and included Bruce's own version of “Jacob's Ladder,” a song he co-wrote that became a #1 hit for Huey Lewis. In addition to his own artist career, Bruce began collaborating extensively in that era, including producing Leon Russell, co-writing Don Henley's “The End of the Innocence,” playing piano on Bonnie Raitt's “I Can't Make You Love Me,” and appearing on albums by everyone from Bob Dylan to Stevie Nicks to Willie Nelson. In the late 1980s and early 1990s Bruce increasingly began incorporating elements of bluegrass and jazz into his music. He disbanded the Range to pursue other projects, including becoming a staple of the Grateful Dead's touring lineup. His debut solo album, Harbor Lights, was released in 1993, and he won another Grammy that year, for Best Pop Instrumental, for composing “Barcelona Mona” with Branford Marsalis for the Barcelona Olympics. He released two additional solo studio albums in the 1990s before forming a new band, The Noisemakers, which released four studio albums between 2002 and 2016. In that same period, he collaborated with bluegrass artist Ricky Skaggs to release one studio album and one live album, and with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jack DeJohnette to release a jazz album called Camp Meeting. Bruce's 2014 album Solo Concerts showcased a sampling of his one-man performances. In 2019 Bruce returned to releasing studio albums as a solo artist with Absolute Zero, an album included collaborations with Blake Mills, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, and others. Among Bruce's many collaborations includes a longstanding partnership scoring films for director Spike Lee. Earlier this year, Bruce released Deep Sea Vents, a water-themed collaborative album with the band yMusic that was released under the name Brhym.
I first heard Doug Derryberry's guitar on a little record called "Here Come the Noisemakers" by Bruce Hornsby. It's a brilliant live album, played by brilliant musicians and everyone should hear it! I was hooked immediately by his phrasing and swagger on the instrument. Doug is so much more than a side man. He is a fantastic producer/engineer/songwriter and the list goes on and on. I cannot wait to spend some time hearing about his story! Grab a cold drink and saddle up for a fun discussion folks. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

When E.T. walked across the screen and into the hearts of moviegoers everywhere, that lovable space alien who wanted to “phone home” needed a sound for its walk. Foley artists, the sound magicians who add special effects to movies, decided to use a bag of jello in a damp T-shirt. Indeed, a Foley artist is nothing but ingenious. Snappers, clackers, ka-chunkers, sha-shonkers and things that go “ronk” are just a few things you might find in their toolbox, along with celery — good for broken bones — or paperclips on gloves to imitate a cat walking down the hall. We'll learn about these tricks of the trade from some of the world's best Foley artists at Skywalker Sound in Marin. Guests: Anna Wiener, contributing writer, The New Yorker - She is the author of the memoir "Uncanny Valley." Her most recent piece for the New Yorker is titled "Noisemakers." Shelley Roden, Foley artist, Skywalker Sound - Roden has worked as a Foley artist for over 25 years, and has worked on "Black Panther," "Top Gun: Maverick," "Soul," "Turning Red," and hundreds of other films. Scott Curtis, Foley Mixer, Curtis has mixed sound for a variety of movies including "Titanic," "Team America" and "Black Panther."

In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray chat with classically trained music composer, Douglas Helvering. We start with a look back and Doug's draw to music. He was first pulled in via a choir and became mesmerized with learning more about music and composition. As a PhD professor of music, Doug has spent most of his adult life analyzing and teaching others how to understand music theory. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, he was forced to reevaluate how to reach others while in lockdown. After awhile, he returned to his YouTube channel, commenting on news and thoughts of the day. In the fall of 2020, it was Doug's brother who suggested Doug try a reaction episode. Doug was not really ready for a clash of music genres, but his brother suggested giving an analysis of the Iron Maiden song, "Fear of the Dark." It was a huge hit with YouTube watchers. Within weeks, he gained thousands of subscribers. With a newfound purpose of teaching principles of music theory over top of metal and hard rock pieces, Doug has grown to over 70,000 followers at the time of this recording. Doug truly teaches us what is happening compositionally in the music and how it moves through chords, keys and even lyrics. In some ways, the watcher is getting the benefit of a classical education leveraged on elements of metal and rock. As the episode wraps up the interview, Alan pulls executive privilege and bypasses the normal review of a horrible movie. Instead, they all talk about some of their favorite war films in honor of Memorial Day. After the films, Alan and Walt each provide a pair of odd news items. Then they move into the Entertainment Segment. WATCHING Walt is watching the Robert Kirkman animated series, Invincible. He also re-watched the 70's film, The Towering Inferno. Finally, he just watched the classic 80s flick, War Games. Doug gave two thumbs up for, Mare of Easttown. He also recently watched Real Genius, Schitt's Creek, The Good Place and Hamiliton. Alan also finished Mare of Easttown and gives it a glowing review. Alan re-watched Togo with his Father-in-Law and that led to watching, Iron Will. Alan also gaves two thumbs up for Guns Akimbo starring Daniel Radcliffe. Finally, in honor of its release on May 25, 1977, Alan re-watched Star Wars with his wife and Father-in-Law. READING Walt is reading, "Gun Room, " by Warren Ellis. Alan, in preparation for an upcoming interview on The Marriage Fit Podcast, is reading, "The 4 Intimacy Styles." Doug is getting ready to read, "Zero Fail: The Rise and Fall of the Secret Service," by Carol Leonning. LISTENING Walt plugs the podcast, Radio Labyrinth and Small Town Murder. He also reminds everyone that Old Sea Brigade has a new album out. And, Walt just got tickets to see Dead and Company in Atlanta later this fall. Alan does a shout out to the 60MW Podcast, Measuring the Score podcast, The Daily Doug on YouTube and the new age group, 2002. Doug has been listening to Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers. He recently did an episode on Queen's, "The March of the Black Queen." He has also been listening to the music of Stargazer and Dio. As to radio, he likes to listen to Mike Smerkonish on SirusXM. He also likes the podcasts, Wait, wait! Don't Tell Me and, The Thinking Atheist. Make sure you have subscribed to The Wilder Ride on your pod-catcher of choice so you will not miss a single episode!
