On this episode I speak with two OGs of the mythopoetic men's movement, Walton Stanley and Timothy Young.Walton and Tim currently organize the Minnesota Men's Conference, and were there way back in 1984 when it was founded by poet Robert Bly.They share some great stories about the early days, and talk about how men's work has contributed to their lives and local communities. They also offer their perspective on how men's work has evolved over the years, and where they see it going in the future, and finally, they address some of the criticisms against the early men's movement as being a reaction against feminism.Over the years, I've received so much inspiration and encouragement from listening to the Minnesota Men's Conference archival recordings featuring wise elders like Robert Bly, Michael Meade, James Hillman, Robert Moore and Martín Prechtel. I'm deeply grateful to Walton and Tim for keeping the home fire burning over there in the Northeast and for generously sharing the collective wisdom from decades of men's conferences for free. I highly recommend subscribing to the Minnesota Men's Conference YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/MensConference) and if you're interested in attending the conference in person, visit https://minnesotamensconference.com Become a member of the Medicine Path Inner Circle and gain early access to new episodes, exclusive bonus episodes and full podcast archives. https://plus.acast.com/s/medicinepath. The theme of the past year - in an obvious sense - has been how we continue to lead progressive, efficient, and normalized work lives in a highly unnormal world. The pandemic has forced us to rethink how we collaborate, engage and connect from first principles. One of the most ubiquitous products we all use in that effort is Dropbox - and it’s why this week I was thrilled to be joined by Timothy Young, President of Dropbox. Talking with Timothy was unique and interesting on multiple levels - on one sense, we dug deeply into the way Dropbox is reimagining the workplace and on the other hand we dove into how these changes in our work environment flow through the underlying products Dropbox is developing. We spent a lot of time talking about Dropbox’s new “Virtual First” strategy, how companies overcome friction when introducing new ideas, building the right model and environment for employees and the challenges of remote work - at the employee, team and management levels. I learned a lot from Timothy and this was one of the most engaging discussions we’ve had on the pod.
If there is a contentious conversation in the spring outside of the normal issues in our current world it is the conversation about Wild Leeks or Ramps. Every year I am learning new things and then this year I started realizing how many differing ideologies were out there about these plants. I wanted to dig into it with someone who has WAY more experience than me to answer some of my burning questions and help me learn more. If you don't know about Wild Leeks or Ramps, they are a member of the Garlic family and are some of the first plants to emerge in the woods in the northern parts of the North America. They are really unique and special plants in how they grow and function, but our knowledge about their nature and more is still VERY much being researched. The number of studies on them are still in process so how do we proceed as we see these cover the tables at Farmer's Markets and placed on menues at restaurants. Every plant we consume has a sustainability to it. Understanding them all can feel really intense, but some we need to care about more. Most plants their sustainability comes down to farming practices, but wild foods have a whole new layer to them. Is it sustainable to place these on a commercial level? Is personal use okay? There are many questions and for most wild foods or even invasive plants the answers are more clear on these answers, but with Ramps well we got some digging to do (not literally!) So I brought on Timothy Young who is the now-retired founder, of Food For Thought, Inc., creators of organic and wild-harvested gourmet specialty foods here in Traverse City, Michigan. Timothy has an extensive background in travel and human relief work in the developing world inspired which Timothy's creation of Food For Thought in 1995 with the mission of creating and raising awareness around just and sustainable food systems. In addition to creating exciting products from the farms and forest of northern Michigan, Young has a long history of humanitarian activism on a range of issues, including farmland preservation both here and abroad. A past president of the Northern Michigan Environmental Action Council and former Vice-Chair of the Michigan Land Use Institute.Currently, Timothy has placed his own land that was used for wild foraging in his company into a restoration mode in order to accommodate studies being done with the FDA, Native American Nations, and Universities to establish the best practices for the sustainability of our wild leek populations in order to preserve their precious position in our eco system. We answer all the burning questions and start to unpack just how complicated these plants really are and how to respectfully form a bond and relationship with them as humans. Author/illustrator Timothy Young discusses his children's picture books, the latest of which is curiously titled, “Untitled.” Some of his others include I'm Looking for a Monster and I Hate Picture Books!, which lovingly pokes fun at some classics of children's literature. Tim has been an animator, toy designer and illustrator. Timothy Young has published four books and three chapbooks of poetry. He has recorded four CDs of poetry with various musicians; produced poetry and cultural videos; organized readings, cultural events, festivals and concerts; and for five years he co-hosted The Northland Literary Review on KFAI radio. His work has been chosen for The Writers Almanac, The Best American Poetry of 1999, college textbooks, many magazines and has been the inspiration for award-winning musical compositions performed in Jazz at Lincoln Center, the University of Texas-Arlington, St. Olaf College and many other venues. He has been a cattle inspector, a police and fire dispatcher in Alaska, a handy-man at an Indigenous People's clinic in Mexico, an inner-city newspaper editor, an organizer for Robert Bly's Men's Conferences, and has taught storytelling, anger management and moral judgment to at-risk youth at the Red Wing Correctional Facility. The history books don’t tell the story of Native people well or accurately; they often skip over the horrors and injustices inflicted on them in the name of God, government, or both. In this episode, we sit down with Tim Young Eagle, executive director of Lutheran Indian Ministries, to grapple with the Church’s role in perpetuating and even leading the colonization of Native people and the generational trauma that resulted from it. Stay with us to hear how LIM is helping to reconcile Native people with God by offering a different kind of Gospel message—one of true hope, healing, and belonging.
This episode shows a different type of musical journey and approach to music-making outside of the classical world! I speak with bass player Kaveh Rastegar about his journey building a successful and varied international career, and his hands-on approach to creating music and to practicing. Whether it's a chance meeting, a conversation, or being exposed to something new - all of this can open a world of new possibilities. Get ready to be inspired by Kaveh's story! Michael Berry is the writer-director of Stuck, an original character-driven musical set in a New York subway that stars Giancarlo Esposito, whom Breaking Badfans might recognize as the cunning owner of Los Pollos Hermanos. Giancarlo plays a very different character in Stuck: a mysterious, seemingly homeless man prone to break into song, who may or may not be on some kind of cosmic special assignment to impact the lives of the passengers who share his New York subway car. Someone breaking into a song is truly not the strangest thing that happens on subways." - Michael Berry It's an ensemble film, so all the main characters get their solos, and the film includes memorable performances from Amy Madigan (Field of Dreams), Arden Cho (Teen Wolf), Ashanti (Coach Carter), Gerard Canonico (Fred in the Broadway production of Groundhog Day), and Omar Chaparro (Overboard). Michael has a background in theater: He's performed on Broadway in shows like Les Misérablesand Next to Normal, and he credits his theatrical background with training him to get the most out of his indie-sized film budgets. His theater experience also helped him to work with marquee talent when he transitioned into film. Frontera, the first feature film that Michael directed, includes performances from Ed Harris, Eva Longoria, and Michael Peña. Some of the things that we discuss in this episode include Why the musical is an inherently fantastical genre but one that can also be grounded in reality The recording technique that allowed his performers the freedom to riff on the musical numbers How he was able to shoot a memorable musical with a budget that was a fraction of La La Landand The Greatest Showman What went into recreating a New York subway car and how that helped the crew get ready for shooting in a real New York City subway for a few days How Stuckwas able to depict characters with opposing viewpoints without demonizing anyone I was moved by how the film depicted its assorted characters with depth while undercutting stereotypes. The film also suggests that to get unstuck we might need each other, even those whose outlook is different than ours, and that reminded me of a certain show. I initially mentioned Stuckin my recap of Louisiana International Film Festival 2018. Stuckwas my favorite film that I saw at LIFF, which is where I met Michael. As mentioned above, Gerard Canonico also has a role in the Broadway production of Groundhog Day. To learn more about that production came together, check out this interview I did with Danny Rubin, the writer of the film and musical adaptation of Groundhog Day. # Sponsor for this Episode nsavides productions – I make videos and tell stories.
