Everyone knows that describing John Zorn as a prolific composer is an understatement. Everyone also knows how inclusive he has been, sharing his compositions with the many musicians who are in his circle of trust. Countless renditions of his music have been recorded by these musicians for Zorn's label, Tzadik. To mark his birthday, on September 2nd, here we will focus on interpretations of the John Zorn songbook, mostly Masada Book One, which have been a bit more independent and have come out on albums not on Tzadik. The playlist features Wayne Horvitz; Rope; Annette Maye; Admah Hotel; Gabriele Coen; Roberto Gatto; Xavier Dubois; Surnatural Orchestra; and the Silkroad Ensemble.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Robin Holcomb. Originally from Savannah, Georgia, Robin grew up in the Bay Area and began playing piano when she was six. In 1977, she moved with her partner, composer Wayne Horvitz, to New York City and was one of the foundational members of the NY downtown art scene. Since then, she has composed works for orchestras from Portland to Philly, has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts to the League of American Orchestras, and recorded albums for labels from Tzadik to Nonesuch. Her latest album, One Way or Another, vol. 1, was just released on Westerlies Records, and it's great! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

I speak with the innovative cellist, improvisor and composer Peggy Lee, who is a band-leader and sought-after collaborator in Vancouver, Canada. Peggy collaborates frequently with Ron Samworth and Tony Wilson and with her husband, drummer Dylan van der Schyff, as well as with many other longtime musical associates including Dave Douglas, Wayne Horvitz, Robin Holcomb, Veda Hille and Lisa Miller. She also leads or co-leads a number of musical projects: The Peggy Lee Band, Film in Music, Waxwing (with Tony Wilson and Jon Bentley) and Beautiful Tool (with Mary Margaret O'Hara). She has also collaborated extensively in theatre and dance with companies and artists such as Ruby Slippers, Rumble Theatre, Presentation House, David Hudgins, Peter Bingham and Delia Brett. In 2005, Peggy received the Freddie Stone Award for integrity and innovation in music and in 2010 she was awarded a Jesse Richardson Theatre Award for outstanding composition. http://www.peggylee.net/about-peggy.html The original video versions of this series are here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYOGF0ZHOdI0236QiDT_SGzUdALNXW06z As a bonus episode, you can hear me play a free improvisation with her. photo credit: Rita Taylor --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leah-roseman/message
The extrovert pianism of Stefano Bollani and Benito Gonzalez opens this show, which then dives into recent Nordic and Eastern European jazz (Fredrik Nordström, Julia Karosi, JAF Trio), embraces the compelling melodicism of Roberto Spadoni, Chris Pattishall, Stefano Coppari, Wayne Horvitz and Sara Schoenbeck, explores the music of two adventurous Canadians (Lina Allemano and Francois Houle), before landing in Ornette-land courtesy of Miguel Zenon. This week we put together an energy-packed playlist to boost us towards the finishing line of the winter season. At the heart of the show is electric jazz, from a rather guitar-centric set of bands. They oscillate between the shredding power of Hedvig Mollestad or Marbin, and the legacy of the New York Downtown scene that has started emerging from the vaults of Wayne Horvitz and has echoes coming back to us from across the world: exhibit A the Belgian band Echoes of Zoo; exhibit B: French drummer Anne Pacéo's project Circles. A second taste of two current favorites, the Pino Palladino - Blake Mills collaboration and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, Chris Potter's compelling one-man-show, the intricate philigrane of Shijin and Tamil Rogeon's electro-spiritual jazz adventures complete this journey in our stashes of new and upcoming releases. Every age has a number of defining musicians, who stand-out for their innovations and distinctive voices. For us growing up musically in the 1980s and 1990s and interested in forward looking music Bill Frisell is one of these foundational figures. His instrumental style is certainly unique and has shaped the way the following generations have approached the guitar, and--more and more so--his compositions are being embraced by his peers. His tunes integrate sources as diverse as country music, rock, pop, surf music or American contemporary and classical music into jazz. They contain many familiar traits which are hard to pin down because they've been revisited through Frisell's original vision, creating a brand of Americana that has become influential well beyond the confines of the US. With tunes like "Throughout" or "Strange Meeting" having been covered by tens of musicians, Bill Frisell' songbook is becoming as influential as his instrumental style Here we'll explore renditions of his songs by Michael Gibbs; Wayne Horvitz; Unscientific Italians; Elvis Costello and Metropole Orkest; Molly Johnson; Steve Argüelles; Aljosa Jeric; Charlie Haden; Tony Malaby; Noël Akchoté; Dylan-Thomas Vance and Griff Bear; and Jerry Douglas. On today's episode I talk to drummer and composer Bobby Previte. Originally from Niagara Falls, New York, Bobby was one of the seminal figures of the 1980s New York ‘Downtown’ scene that included John Zorn, Wayne Horvitz, and Elliott Sharp, and his original compositions have been recorded and released on labels like Sony, Elektra, Tzadik. He's also led a plethora of diverse ensembles from behind his drums and has collaborated with many of the leading lights in and beyond the world of music, including master composer John Adams, iconic singer Tom Waits, pantheon filmmaker Robert Altman, and most recently, rock legend Iggy Pop. He's also the recipient of the 2015 Greenfield Prize for music and was a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow in 2012, and his latest albums are a series of live recordings called Groundtruther, which you can get on his Bandcamp site now! Circus is like Jazz. They both require a great deal of originality and a capacity to improvise and be in the moment. They come out of a sense of artistic urgency and self-expression since they are not arts that people embrace to get rich. And they both demand incredible dedication and discipline. We explore the connections between these two art forms, focusing on jazz inspired by the circus world, composed for circus shows, or evoking-in a way or another-"The Greatest Show on Earth" Sit back, relax, enjoy the show, and, like Charles Mingus put it, "Don't Be Afraid, the Clown's Afraid Too". The playlist features Art Blakey, Raffaello Pareti, Django Bates, Emile Parisien, Vincent Peirani, Otello Savoia, Michael Shrieve, Bobby Previte, Kamikaze Ground Crew, Richard Galliano, Sexmob, Wayne Horvitz, Geri Allen, Mary Lou Williams, Leïla Martial, Charles Mingus, Willem Breuker, and Henry Threadgill. Engineer and producer Tucker Martine joins me on the show this week. Tucker has been operating out of a couple of incarnations of his own studio, Flora Recording and Playback, for quite a few years now. He has recorded and/or produced acclaimed records for a diverse cast of characters like The Decemberists, Bill Frisell, My Morning Jacket, Wayne Horvitz, Neko Case, Laura Veirs and many more. Tucker has an amazing sense of depth and tone that comes through in his recordings, which is a reflection of how much he cares for the art of recording itself. I wanted to have Tucker on the show to talk about some of his experiences making those records, as well as building his studio and some of the joys and trials of that process. We had a great time digging deep, and I hope you enjoy it! We’re coming to you bi-weekly now during the virus, and welcome your calls to talk about what’s keeping you busy and creative during this time.

Nella puntata del 18 marzo 2019 avevamo presentato The Wayne Horvitz European Orchestra Live at the Bimhuis, pubblicato da Novara Jazz.

Whether it's a chance meeting, a conversation, or being exposed to something new - all of this can open a world of new possibilities. Later in the episode, Kaveh delivers inspiring insight on how to continue growing after college, going after your dreams, and keeping your enthusiasm and spark for music alive. Working Class Audio Session #119 with Tucker Martine!!! Tucker Martine is a record producer, musician and composer and the son of singer and songwriter Layng Martine, Jr., Tucker grew up in Nashville, Tennessee where he played in bands and tinkered with recording devices before moving to Boulder, Colorado after graduating from high school. In Colorado, Martine was a DJ at a public radio station KGNU. He would frequently play two or more records at once on the air to experiment with creating new sounds. Martine also took courses at the Naropa Institute where he studied sound collage and befriended Harry Smith - the ethnomusicologist, artist and Kabbalist - who made a large impression on Martine. 1993, Martine moved to Seattle, Washington where he began to combine his skills and interests. He joined Wayne Horvitz's chamber group The 4 Plus 1 Ensemble where Martine's instrument was a series of looping and sound manipulating devices which were fed by the groups otherwise acoustic instruments. Martine received a Grammy nomination in 2007 in the "best engineered album" category for the Floratone album with Bill Frisell on Blue Note. He has also released several albums of his field recordings. As a composer and musician Martine has released 2 albums under the recording pseudonym Mount Analog and a 3rd one is on the way. Additionally, Microsoft called upon Martine's creativity when they asked him to help compose the startup and branding sounds for Microsoft's new operating system Vista. Today Martine lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, singer songwriter Laura Veirs and continues to make records in his own studio, Flora Recording & Playback. Tucker has worked with artists such as The Decemberists, R.E.M., My Morning Jacket, Modest Mouse, Beth Orton, Neko Case, Mudhoney, Bill Frisell, Sufjan Stevens, Spoon, Grandaddy, Mavis Staples, Iron And Wine, The Jayhawks, Karl Blau, Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros, Blind Pilot, Camera Obscura, Stephen Malkmus, k.d. lang, She and Him, M Ward, Case/lang/veirs, Jesse Sykes and Laura Veirs.
Legendary Drummer, Michael Shrieve spends time with On The Scene SF/O for a 2-Part conversation. Shrieve is often hailed as one of the highlights for his fiery drum solo during Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice”, as captured in the 1969 Festival’s film, Woodstock. He seeks out interesting people, and artists to embolden his creative output. Considered a music experimentalist, the drummer, percussionist, producer, and composer, has been involved in a wide array of innovative projects since his tenure in Santana, ranging from electronic music, to fusion, jazz, improvised music, and appeared on notable commercial outings, such as the Rolling Stones’ Emotional Rescue (on percussion) in 1980, and later on Mick Jagger’s “She’s the Boss” album. To illustrate the type of forward thinking musicians he associates with, collaborations include Stomu Yamashta, Steve Winwood, Al Di Meola, Klaus Schulze, David Beal, Andy Summers, Steve Roach, David Torn, Jonas Hellborg, Bill Frisell, Mark Isham, Jeff Beal, Wayne Horvitz, Zakir Hussain, Airto, and Jack DeJohnette. We begin by speaking about the new release, Santana IV, featuring the remaining members of the original Woodstock era of the band, with- Guitarist, Carlos Santana, Guitarist, Neal Schon, Vocalist and Keyboardist, Gregg Rolie, Percussionist, Mike Carabello, with newer Santana collaborators, percussionist, Karl Perazzo, Bassist, Benny Rietveld, and guest vocalist, Ronald Isley. With such a storied career, it is inevitable that there is much to mine in these conversations. In Part 1, you will get to hear some of the inside scoop on Santana IV, encounters with Bassist, Jaco Pastorius, while residing in New York, his forthcoming recording with Jack DeJohnette, Zakir Hussain, and others, as well as Shrieve’s experience meeting the classic John Coltrane Quartet, and his longtime friendship with Drummer, Elvin Jones. This week for my 40th (!) episode, one of my most fun chats with all four members of the wonderful brass quartet, The Westerlies (Riley Mulherkar, Zubin Hensler, Andy Clausen, and Willem de Koch)! We talk about the formation of the group, the challenges that come with it, ensemble philosophies, developing a unique ensemble voice, the balance in group energy, and most importantly, Big Truck City and The Love Square! Featured on this episode are two tracks from their last album, Wish the Children Would Come On Home: The Music of Wayne Horvitz: "The Store, The Campfire" and "Wish the Children Would Come On Home." Composer Wayne Horvitz put together this amazing band of young men and women from Seattle's junior colleges and high schools and picked the cream of the crop to perform these 13 compositions. The playing is extraordinary with many fine solos by these young unknowns. The compositions are superb and demonstrate Mr. Horvitz' influences: Basie, Ellington, Mingus, Evans but most of all the originality of Wayne Horvitz. The band has 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, a clarinet, a soprano saxophone, an alto, tenor and baritone saxophone and piano bass and drums. A basic big band but this is not an ordinary band but and extraordinary one. The album was produced by Vancouver's Tony Reif and issued on Songlines Records and is called "At The Reception". Check out some very original music right here!
