He works as Associate Professor of Games and Occulture at Falmouth University in Cornwall, where he specialises in the occult and games. He is the author of two monographs Quests: Design, Theory, and History in Games and Narratives (now in its second edition) and Game Magic: A Designer's Guide to Magic Systems in Theory and Practice. He translates theory into practice as a core team member of Apocalypse Studios, where he consults on worldbuilding and systems design. He is also the creator of “Howard's Law of Occult Design,” published in 100 Principles of Game Design. Howard has presented on games and the occult at a variety of international conferences, including Berlin Occulture, Trans-States, and ESSWE9. In addition, he has been an invited speaker at Viktor Wynd's Last Tuesday Society, where he has spoken about folk magic and folk games. Howard studies Sabbatic Craft at the intersection of the Left Hand Path and the Typhonian current. Through his scholarship and creative practice, Howard is an ambassador for the power of play as a transformative and transcendent practice.[ Falmouth University Website]In this interview, Jeff shares his background as a “technomage” and talks about his understanding of ludomancy and the history of the concept. With regard to classic role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, he discusses the effects that the moral panic known as the ‘Satanic Panic' had on gaming and game developers, not only during the ‘peak' years but also in later years. Jeff also talks about ‘magical' or ‘occult' games that have been inspired by various forms of media, including the sci-fi/fantasy/horror genre, as well as how the motivations and attitudes of players have changed over the years. On an historical level, Jeff gives some examples of games that are based on occult groups/traditions. He also talks about how he approaches his own game design with occult practices as a starting point, and gives some examples of games that people could look into, should they be interested. Lastly, Jeff expands on his concept of ‘playful occulture' as the basis for an upcoming monograph, and shares a bit about an article he co-wrote for RENSEP, titled "To Reveal the Hidden Kingdom of Eld: Andrew Chumbley, the Cultus Sabbati, and Imaginal Space in Cornwall” that can be found on the RENSEP website for members. "I don't know what to do about this because we do have to use clinical material. It's the best tried and true method in which to inculcate analytic thinking in our students and supervises. On the other hand, we are so indebted to our patients and their trust in us and our responsibilities as ethical practitioners not to divulge their privacy. Principles are what we're trying to teach, we're not trying to teach people, we are not trying to teach that person, the case is not what we are teaching, but the principles in the case."    Episode Description: We begin by acknowledging the tension between our commitment to patient confidentiality and our need to learn, teach and advance our field through the sharing of intimate information. We discuss the difference between using clinical examples to reveal particular individuals as opposed to illustrating principles in psychoanalysis. Barbara describes the well-known case of a famous author whose analyst revealed identifiable details of his analysis in a publication. She shares why she feels that co-writing with one's analyst about one's treatment is problematic - "it stretches the concept of co-construction to a clinical breaking point." We consider how presenting a patient publicly impacts the analyst's interiority and lives on in the treatment. We close with recognizing the challenge of confidentiality and appreciating "the insuperable predicament posed by the mutually exclusive imperatives of protecting patient privacy and educating the next generation, as well as ourselves. Remembering that ego ideals are only approximations is our most effective balm."     Our Guest: Barbara Stimmel, PhD, is an adult and child psychoanalyst in New York city where she has practiced for the past several decades. She teaches and supervises widely and has contributed to psychoanalytic journals as well as editing and contributing chapters in several books. She has also presented papers, discussion groups and workshops in the wide world of psychoanalysis. She has held offices in psychoanalytic institutions on the local, national, and international level.  Barbara is involved at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York, where she sits on committees, has taught residents, and serves on the Palliative Care team.  She is on the President's Council of Sanctuary for Families, an organization devoted to women and families surviving domestic violence and trafficking. She also sits on the Shakespeare Council of The Public Theatre in New York.  This diversity of interests is reflected in the variety of topics within psychoanalysis and psychotherapy about which she has written, presented, and taught.  In some sense, confidentiality is part and parcel of any clinical topic, regardless of theory and patient population.   Recommended Readings:   Crastnopol, M. DO WE NOT DESIRE TO WAIT ON CHRIST, TO DO SUCH A MIRACULOUS CONVERSION IN OUR LIVES SUCH THAT IT WILL BE SO MAGNANIMOUS, THAT THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT WE HAVE BEEN TRANSLATED FROM COMPLETE SPIRITUAL DARKNESS INTO COMPLETE SPIRITUAL LIGHT: THE GREATEST EXPERIENCE OF OUR LIFE? IF JESUS CHOSE 4 IGNORANT FISHERMEN AND A TAX COLLECTOR TO BE LEADERS OF HIS DISCIPLES IN ORDER TO CONFOUND THE EDUCATED PHARISEES, CANNOT HE CHOOSE US COMMON AMERICANS TO IGNITE A BONDAGE OF THE WILL AWAKENING IN AMERICA BY INTRODUCING AGAIN IN AMERICA THE DOCTRINE OF SALVATION THAT WAS PREACHED IN AMERICA DURING THE 1600 AND 1700'S? The Feast of the Epiphany - Greek for "To Reveal." How do we come together with people of different walks of life when we live in a world that teaches we can no longer come together despite differences? Today's Gospel is about the belief that something is big enough for all of us--that's what Catholicism, is. It's Universal, which means there is a truth in Jesus Christ that is big enough for everyone. When we are not united, we are weak. This day and age, we don't miss unity because we've never seen it. So, how can we have that hope? 1. Don't look for what's wrong with someone; look for their goodness. 2. Recognize that the Gospel is good news, not good advice. 3. Be a seeker. You cannot give an answer to a question someone doesn't have, and you cannot have joy unless you seek it. Christianity does not start with advice, it starts with news. "All nations shall walk by your light."
