I saw a need in the GPS Tracking Installation industry for a group that was put in place to help others succeed in business. I had seen this done successfully in countless other industries.  From roofing, sales, marketing, construction, car audio, etc.  I joined several car audio related groups as this was the industry I was quite familiar with.  But I noticed the same lame-ass conversations and shitty posts in all of these groups.  It quickly became apparent that these groups had little to no culture.  Their admins and moderators ruled with an iron fist or they were completely lax and let every spammy asshat into the group. After searching for a GPS related group with no luck, I decided to create my own. To be honest, I was scared.  I didn’t know what people were going to think of me. The sad truth is that many people are scared of competition.   At first many were leery of my intentions.  But after showing up every day and offering value I slowly began to win the trust of these business owners. The main reason I started the GPS Tracking Installers Facebook group was so that I could build a community of install techs in a very deep niched industry and ultimately scoop the cream off the top of the talent pool. As the group grew, the interactions and conversations began to organically happen.  Basically, I didn’t need to post or ask questions daily in order to generate interaction. This allowed me to step back and really analyze and see what these people were wanting.  We had lots of posts about the technical aspect of the job but very little about how to help grow your business.  It was almost as if people were scared to talk about how they were winning out of fear that their competitor would come and steal your idea and game plan.So I decided to be me and nothing but me.  I’m as transparent as they get.  I decided to open up my business playbook and literally tell my competitors EXACTLY how we were winning at Top Class Installations. What happened as a result of this I would have never guessed. Some people were turned off. Some people were drawn to me and my willingness to share.  Especially the ones who weren’t willing to ask for help. And most were VERY appreciative of my willingness to help others without looking for a handout at the end of the day. I started to send referrals to my out of state competitors.  And all this did was deepen the relationships and bonds that were beginning to form all because I had the balls to start a Facebook group and put myself out there. Before long, group members were following me on social media and I’d get invites to go out for a drink or dinner when I traveled.  Once you break bread with someone things change!From there I started organizing GPS Tracking Installers meetups at industry events and trade shows across the country. Little did I know at the time but I was establishing myself as the authority within the industry. This helped boost my confidence in myself.   What do you think happens when you boost your confidence?  You start standing taller and subconsciously commanding attention.  Along with boosted confidence come boosted wins!  We were selling a shit ton at Top Class all because I decided to get a little uncomfortable and start a Facebook group.  Our team was growing.  We were beginning to receive referrals from our competitors!  This is a prime example of the law of reciprocity in action. With all of this positive feedback surrounding me, it boosted my confidence further.  It gave me the final push I needed to continue to come out of my shell.  I had always wanted to write a book.  But for some reason, I now had this little voice in the back of my head telling me it was possible. 9 Months later I made the call and hired an editor to help me pull the genius from my brain and put it onto paper.  My book went on to become an Amazon bestseller and I discovered my purpose.I truly enjoy helping others win.  I shoveled shit against the tide for so many years just trying to make ends meet.  All I knew at the time was how to work harder.  I’m here to tell you that since I started focusing my time on the RIGHT activities each day my income has continuously gone up each week.  It’s almost as if the less I work the more I make.  And I want to clarify this statement because I don’t want you to think I’m telling you to work less and magically the money will appear.  What I’m telling you is to focus your time and WORK on the business so that the business can work without you.  Ultimately because I decided to start a Facebook group, I was able to get close with my competition.  I can honestly say that I now have friends across the country that I could call up at any time, day or night, and they would help.  Don’t be scared or intimidated by your competitors.  They’re not perfect and neither are you.  Come together and learn from each other.  This is something we need more of in these crazy times!Small Steps Forward Daily!

On today's episode of the Caged Vision Podcast, I interview Tomas Keenan.  Tomas is a scrappy and motivated entrepreneur, as well as the owner of Top Class Installations in Hicksville, NY.  Tomas followed his passion of cars and music to find himself creating a business of his own.  After that business literally broke him all the way down, he had to find another way.  This is an extremely inspiring episode of why to never give up, and why it can take people around you to get you back in the game, and back on top. Some takeaways from the show: "I expected to be installing high end custom audio all day, every day. I soon realized that these jobs don’t just magically appear. And when the work did appear it wasn’t always something I was familiar with or wanted to do." "I thought that once you opened a business that all you had to do was the work. In other words, fulfillment. Sell that job, do the work, get paid, life is dreamy. What they don’t tell you is that once you become a business owner that you are responsible and expected to wear all the hats. Accounting, bookkeeping, cleaning, ordering supplies, firefighting, hiring, etc." "If I just grind all day, everything will be just fine. With all that grinding, 3 very important areas of my life suffered. Faith, Family, and most importantly… my fitness. This led me to developing severe sciatica which eventually floored me when I least expected it. I was laid up in bed for 3 weeks. My business generated zero income because I was the business." "Fast forward to 2019. Top Class is now 5 years old. My wife tells me she’s pregnant (Life Altering Event). This drove me to become a better person so I could raise my child in the manner that I deemed responsible." "After I began going down the path of self-development I become addicted to learning. Just me and school just never got along. I didn't like that format for learning. I thought, whatever it is, let's just get this over with and so I can move on and start working. It's kinda how I felt about it. [spp-timestamp time="22:00"] There are certain roles, certain jobs within the infrastructure of the economy, that you need to be extremely educated for. [spp-timestamp time="32:00"] Most of these companies aren't using something as tied into the database network, they're only on the more advanced systems. So the most basic GPS system is going to literally just be a three wire connection to the vehicle, so that you get a hard wire, a battery connection, a chassis ground, and an ignition connection. So basically, the unit is going to know when a key is on and off. [spp-timestamp time="40:00"] I'll give you some more of the story. So at 21 years of age I worked a couple years for a highend audio shop on the island, did some real fancy stuff. I was the cocky 21 year old who knew more than my boss. He wasn't allowing me to do the kind of work that I knew I could do. I quit with $300 cash in my pocket and I went and started my own business. I've done that. So 21 years old, 300 bucks to my name, and I just made it happen. [spp-timestamp time="58:14"] Final Words   Final Words:There's a couple of key areas of life that you need to focus on every day, in order to be successful. I don't believe in necessarily a balanced lifestyle or work-life balance. When you're focusing on that book, other areas of your life are going to suffer because you're just so focused on that. But at the same point in time, you can't neglect those other areas for too long. That's one of the things that I did with my very first business. I neglected my health and I worked 90-100 hour weeks, on my feet all day long. I wound up getting tremendously overweight. I'm six foot four, I'm currently 275 pounds. Business Playmakers podcast is excited to present Tomas Keenan, Co Founder and CEO of Top Class Installations. At a young age, Tomas fell in love with the installation, and fabrication of custom car audio. Tomas decided he knew more about the car audio business than the people he worked for, so he chose to start his own business, Exquisite Mobile Electronics Inc., which he ran for 5 years. As technology advanced, Tomas found that many vehicles were coming from the factory with better quality car audio systems, so it became difficult to sustain a profitable business. Tomas had to make the hardest decision he had ever had to make in his life, to close the business he had started. After about 3 years, Tomas and his previous business partner decided to start another business, Top Class Installation. Tomas and his partner were doing well, however found that they didn’t have a specific focus, and decided to only do installations of GPS tracking and dash cameras in commercial vehicles. Even though this is not the type of business that they set out to do, Tomas and his partner saw this as an opportunity to run a sustainable business while still pursuing their passion. As Kyle mentions in this podcast, it is often hard to determine the difference between an opportunity and a distraction. During the conversation, Tomas mentions that when first starting out as an entrepreneur, you do what ever you have to in order to keep the business running. Even though something helped pay the bills when your business needed revenue, it may not be something you enjoyed or what you even wanted to do after your business was established. That is an example of a distraction. In the case of Tomas and his partner deciding to niche into a certain type of business, it was an opportunity and they are glad they made the decision.
