By Rex Sexton - Our belief in God must be a conviction, not just a preference. According to a Supreme Court Ruling, the latter can be changed, and therefore, not covered by the 1st Amendment. True Conviction is often revealed through hardship. When those difficult times come, what will we do? Will we be fully

Jazz is back and so is Criminal Minds: Evolution. Episode 6, "True Conviction", sees the BAU race against time to free a wrongfully convicted man on death row even if it pisses off Lewis' girlfriend. Meanwhile, Sicarius visits his Harry Morgan and Garcia kisses someone. Oh, it's very eventful. Oh yeah, that cliffhanger from episode 5? Doesn't fucking matter. Not one bit.
They're alive!!!! We had so much fun with this episode. Sure we had minutiae - just listen to us talk about 2nd Street - loved the callback. We can't wait until next Friday.

Literature is full of snakes in the grass masquerading as friends. Shakespeare's evil bastard Iago is disgruntled about his boss Othello passing him over for a promotion and giving it to Cassio instead. So he manipulates Othello into thinking his wife is having an affair with the guy. A pretty clever way to drive a wedge between the boss and his favorite employee—and to position himself as Othello's most trusted adviser, while secretly tearing him down. There are lots more examples: Wormtongue in Lord of the Rings, The Talented Mr. Ripley…It's seductive to have a trusted adviser, someone who seems to admire you and have only your best interests at heart. But sometimes those indispensable sidekicks can have their own hidden agendas. Sometimes they're not so much weaving a safety net, as they are building a web. And if you're not careful, you can walk right into it and never come out again. Mom-guilt is not healthy nor appropriate in any situation, yet we feel it all the time. We're constantly aware of a general sense that we're dropping the ball or we're not "good enough" at managing life. Whether we feel this pressure of inadequacy internally or from our social circles, we need to be aware of it and learn to let it go. The most obvious areas of mom-guilt are parenting choices, household duties, our professional careers, time spent in relationships, and even our own self-care with our decisions about exercise and eating. So, on this episode, Scott and I have a deep conversation about how to spot the source of mom-guilt and powerfully confirm our right-standing as moms before the Lord. We're also going to make a clear and important distinction between mom-guilt and true Holy Spirit conviction. What if the guilt that you're feeling is actually a prodding from the Lord? The evening of March 6, 1990, seemed ordinary for single mother Donna Willard. Her three children went to bed and her fiancé Tom Tyrell planned to come over later that night. But when a knock came at the front door of her Southwest Philadelphia home, she found herself instead face to face with a hooded gunman. He shot Donna twice, killing her instantly, with her twelve-year-old son witnessing the murder from the top of the stairs. For months, the hunt for her killer led investigators to a maddening series of dead ends until months later, when the case broke in an astonishing direction. Loraine Ballard Morrill speaks with TRUE CONVICTION host and undefeated homicide prosecutor Anna-Sigga Nicolazzi about her travels to key locations in the case to reveal how prosecutor Lee Dobkin and lead detective Lt. Lee Witte untangled the truth about who killed Donna, and to retrace step-by-step the journey to justice for her family.
Investigation Discovery kicked off 2018 with an afternoon of premieres, and returning guest/enduring spouse Dan Brady and I took a look at two of them. True Conviction has an interesting premise -- but doesn't stick to it closely enough, falling into some crime-tabloid structural cliches instead of focusing on prosecutors and their work, plus host Anna-Sigga Nicolazzi keeps, well, leading the witnesses in talking-head interviews. Dan thinks it's good enough to fall asleep to... ...but had no use for the tackily named Bride Killa, while I thought it had major problems (and some baked-in sexism about what women "should be like" in a marriage) but delightfully balls-out commitment from the re-enactors, and unusually vernacular shade from some of the experts. "Because she's a big ol' bitch" is not a great look in terms of explaining motive, but Lord knows the show doubled down on proving it. No need to spend YOUR whole haircut budget (...you'll see) on the year's first TBP; it's free!
