Jodi Berg, PhD recently retired as the fourth-generation President and CEO of Vitamix, having joined the family business in 1997 with the directive to lead the company's overseas expansion, later serving as director of international, household and commercial divisions, and then ultimately as Executive Vice President in 2007, President in 2009, and CEO in 2011.Under her leadership, Jodi built on the 100+ year history and legacy of her family's business, — founded in 1921 and headquartered in Olmsted Township in the greater Cleveland area — to grow the iconic and beloved brand to what it is today, with expanded distribution to over 130 countries and over 400% organic growth during her tenure. As many are familiar with — Vitamix manufactures high-performance blending equipment for home and commercial use, with millions of consumers around the world who use Vitamix products to help achieve their personal health and culinary goals. The company's commercial customer list reads like a “Who's Who” of major restaurant chains, and gourmet chefs regard their Vitamix machines in the same light and improtance as they regards their knives. The company has an incredible history of innovation and invention and developed the first true commercial blender in the early 1990s, which ignited the smoothie movement, and has been named the Best-in-Class Overall beverage blender for decades by readers of Foodservice Equipment & Supplies magazine. As you'll hear in our conversation, Jodi developed a highly intentional approach to leadership — centered on purpose and employee engagement — which she formalized, researched and earned a PhD in management from Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management and ultimatley leveraged to transform the organizational structure of Vitamix and its corporate vision, mission and culture. This was such a fun and unforgettable conversation — we actually got into such depth and breadth here that I'm breaking the episode into two parts that will cover Vitamix and Leadership across growing up in the family business and the familial lessons passed on, the evolution of Vitamix over the generations and the corresponding ingredients required order to thrive for over a century, balancing family legacy with innovation, lessons learned in hospitality and working at The Ritz Carlton, many personal stories and historical anecdotes about Vitamix that shaped her understanding of purpose and how it drives engagement and fulfillment in both personal and professional contexts, synthesizing her earned leadership wisdom into her upcoming book, why Vitamix is headquartered in Cleveland, helping people find their superpowers and a whole lot more… Jodi is an incredibly thoughtful teacher and operator and this really felt like a master class in all things business, leadership, and purpose. 00:00:00 - Introduction and Background  00:04:56 - Journey to Vitamix: A Family Legacy  00:19:23 - The Ritz-Carlton Experience and Lessons Learned  00:24:57 - Returning to Vitamix: Merging Passions and Purpose  00:25:27 - Family Legacy and Personal Growth  00:30:05 - The Evolution of Vitamix  00:36:43 - Balancing Legacy with Strategic Growth  00:42:53 - Changing Perspectives on Food and Health  00:51:00 - Creating a Community Around Food  00:58:02 - The Impact of Authentic Marketing-----LINKS:https://www.linkedin.com/in/jodilberg/https://www.vitamix.com/us/en_us/Original Vitamix Infomercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rm5IzzGPzQA-----SPONSOR:Roundstone InsuranceRoundstone Insurance is proud to sponsor Lay of The Land. Send us a Text Message.Jeff McNaught owns Edgewater Surf, a surf shop in Rocky River, where he sells a variety of new and used paddleboards, surfboards, and windsurfing gear. The shop also serves as an informal community hub for styrofoam™ recycling. Jeff started this program to provide a local recycling option for the bulky EPS (expanded polystyrene) found inside paddleboards and encasing appliances, TVs, computers, and other large items for customer shipment. This bulky, lightweight, and rigid foam plastic is not accepted in community recycling programs, and the closest recycler is in Dayton, Ohio. Working to fill a community need, Jeff established an EPS drop-off location at his shop and installed a "densifier" with a Food Service Packaging Association grant. This equipment compacts the foam so it can be cost-effectively transported. With both collection and processing up and running, Jeff is now the only processor of post-consumer foam in the Cleveland area while he is still running his shop and getting out on the lake to windsurf. Join us to hear Jeff speak about his vision for scaling this program and what he needs to make it sustainable. Jeff also speaks about what surfing is like in Cleveland and the surfing community and his partnerships with organizations like the Surfrider Foundation working to address problems of plastic pollution. Jeff has turned his passions into his business and is all in. We hope our community will support him.  ResourcesRecycling at Edgewater SurfShop Edgewater SurfAbout Edgewater SurfFollow us: https://www.facebook.com/ecospeaksclehttps://www.instagram.com/ecospeakscleContact us:hello@ecospeakscle.com

Greetings everyone, this is Dave with Mighty Line Minute. Today, I'll be talking about a story some of you may know about others will not. And that's the story of Smoky The War Dog. Read the blog https://mightylinetape.com/a/blog/category/mighty-lines-safety-talk-and-toolbox-talk-topics “In the context of the greatest devastation in planet Earth's history, and the subsequent eradication of over 100 million human beings peopling it, the story about a dog in World War Two is indeed insignificant.” “But wars, large and small, are made up of millions of stories experienced by those involved in the war itself, or by those remaining at home.”  And so begins the story of William A. Wynne in his 1996 Memoir, Yorkie Doodle Dandy.  Bill Wynne, from Cleveland, Ohio, was the U.S. Army Air Force Lieutenant who nurtured and became best friend to a four pound Yorkshire Terrier known as “Smoky.”  Smoky had been found trapped in a foxhole near Nadzab, New Guinea in early March of 1944.  So why am I telling this story? There are reasons that this will soon become apparent. And at the end, you will understand why Smoky and Bill's role in history is so important. I met Bill for the first time, 50 some years ago, and remained his close friend throughout the remainder of his life. Bill passed in 2019 at the age of 99, though not before he was able to encourage the Governor of Ohio to re-open a VA care facility. It had been closed to new residents due to short staffing. And he accomplished this from his hospital bed. Bill was one of those people you would instantly enjoy from the moment you met him. He developed many relationships as everyone wanted to be his friend. His heart of gold seemed to find the best in all. And he enjoyed and found value in each and every day of his life, no matter how difficult.  Like my own father, they both answered the call to serve during World War II and were raised similarly. My father was deployed in the U.S. Army Infantry in the Philippines. Bill served in the Army Air Force, where he was an aerial reconnaissance photographer throughout the Southwest Pacific.  Bill had the rare opportunity to keep his personal collection of rare photography, that later became an important part of his legacy.  Smoky's final resting place is only about a mile away from Mighty Line's headquarters in Rocky River, Ohio. It's a lovely walk on a beautiful day, and the Smoky Memorial can be located on a map search if you'd like to visit the Cleveland Area MetroParks. Other memorials to Smoky exist throughout the world, including Brisbane, Australia and the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio.  Smoky was aptly named by Bill for her smoky-gray hair, and soon became an entertainer trained by Bill. She was a fast learner, able to select her own name from disarranged letters, ride her own scooter, and walk on a carefully and safely constructed two cable tight wire. Comfort and healing was soon provided by this dynamic duo to servicemen who were recovering in military hospitals. A serviceman who had been unable to speak for many months began to speak once again after Smoky was handed to him, put in his arms as nurses cried.  Smoky flew on numerous combat and reconnaissance missions with Bill, and was soon named “Mascot of the Southwest Pacific” by YANK Magazine Down Under in its July, 1944 issue. Post-war, Bill and Smoky continued their service by visiting hospitals, orphanages and performing at live events and many venues. After a stint in Hollywood training dogs, including a film with Ronald Reagan, Bill returned to Cleveland to appear with Smoky on weekly live television that featured many of Smoky's tricks. Bill was always pleased to note that with every show on those Sunday mornings a new trick was performed by Smoky.  Smoky, however, may be best known for her role in delivering a critical communication line. This line was delivered through a silt-laden, 70 foot drain pipe located beneath an active Lingayen Gulf airstrip. Large number of planes and personnel would otherwise have been exposed to certain enemy aircraft fire in the event of the excavation that would have otherwise been required to deliver the communication line.  Bill was proud that Smoky became known as the first therapy dog of record. This was due to her early well-documented and photographed roles in military hospitals. Especially as she served to support those suffering from PTSD.  You can actually hear Bill with Smoky communicate from the Philippines, along with the American Red Cross in the short film "Angel in a Foxhole" that was produced and now streams on Vimeo. So why is Smoky's story important? Smoky has certainly generated an immense following in the dog world. Even more importantly, in the human caring for mankind. Smoky, through Bill, provided a means by which Bill himself was able to move through a difficult time in World War II, including times where Smoky saved his life. You can read Yorkie Doodle Dandy to learn more about those stories.  Smoky and Bill went on to serve and further encourage the therapy dog movement, providing significant support to the PTSD support world.  In the words of one film festival reviewer, "God sent down one of his angels in the perfect disguise as man's best friend." And so we have it. Smoky's mark on the world, summed up in 15 words. On behalf of ShieldMark Inc., be sure to check out Mighty Line's awesome selection of industrial and commercial floor signs and markings as well as what's known as the world's most durable floor tape. Their products are designed to elevate workplace safety, facilitate safe egress, improve safe lift truck travel, and assure heightened employee morale. All of this while impressing customers and visitors. Have a safe day, and as Smoky did, make sure it's a pleasant one and meaningful one for all whom you'll be with. Take care.

Greetings everyone, and welcome back to Mighty Line Monday Minute. I'm here to talk about effective safety messaging. Last week, we talked about the critical nature of using phrases and how often those are heard in Safety, but what really is effective? So let's get into it! Learn more about Mighty Line Minute  Mighty Line Floor Tape We also talked about how to improve upon phrases we've heard before, rather than say, "Be prepared for the unexpected," "Risk assess, educate, communicate, then mitigate." Today on Monday, April 8th, 2024, a total solar eclipse will first appear to those in the U.S. at Eagle Pass, Texas. And at 3:15 PM Eastern Daylight Time the headquarters of Mighty Line Tape in Rocky River, Ohio will see its first total eclipse in more than a century! Of course I won't be at my desk at 3:15, as this important event represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to observe, share, and celebrate with family and friends. And to think that in many ancient cultures, solar eclipses were often interpreted as signs or omens from the gods or supernatural beings. In some cultures they were even seen as a manifestation of divine anger or displeasure. Or as a punishment for sins or wrongdoing. Some cultures believe that a solar eclipse occurred when a celestial creature or monster temporarily swallowed the sun! Today, solar eclipses are significant events that capture the attention and imagination of everyone, leading to a rich tapestry of beliefs, interpretations, rituals, and connections across many different cultures. So why am I telling stories today? Well, with safety, and especially for the art of effective safety messaging, it is often essential to begin by telling stories. That is because you can use those moments to catch and engage the interest of others, particularly if you want listeners to be able to take action with information that you plan on delivering. That is critical if you're hoping to change behavior and impact safety culture in a positive way. So the next time you plan on delivering a safety presentation or giving a toolbox talk, try telling a story first. Engage your listeners in that manner, as opposed to simply talking about statistics, regulations, or even delivering charts. Just try it! So, yes folks soon I will be donning my ISO protective eyewear for the solar eclipse and assure that everyone around me does so as well. I hope that you are able to learn from this. Most importantly, I hope that you continue to improve in your safety communications and take advantage of the tips that we have provided. Do take a moment to listen to Mighty Line and what they have to say about their products and how they can be of help to you in assuring a safe workplace.
