A severe heatwave that is sweeping through large swathes of India has pushed temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius in several places in north and central India. Heatwaves have caused 24,223 deaths from 1992 to 2015 across the country, as per official records. The India Meteorological Department qualitatively describes heatwave as a condition of air temperature which becomes fatal to the human body when exposed. Quantitatively, it is defined based on the temperature thresholds over a region in terms of actual temperature or its departure from normal. A heatwave is considered if the maximum temperature of an IMD weather station reaches at least 40C or more for plains and at least 30C or more for hilly regions. A 4.5 to 6.4-degree departure from normal is considered to declare a heatwave and a more than 6.4-degree departure for a severe heatwave. And, when the maximum temperature is equal to or above 45°C, it is a heatwave, while if it's 47°C or above, it is a severe heatwave. The above criteria should be met at least in 2 stations in a Meteorological sub-division for at least two consecutive days to declare a heat wave. Heat waves usually occur in the months of March to June and in some rare cases even in July. The peak month of the heat wave over India is May. Heat waves generally occur over plains of northwest India, Central, East and north Peninsular India. It covers Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Sometimes it occurs over Tamilnadu and Kerala also. However, maximum temperatures more than 45°C are observed mainly over Rajasthan and Vidarbha region. IMD's network of surface observatories covering the entire country measure various meteorological parameters like temperature, relative humidity, pressure, wind speed and direction etc. Based on daily maximum temperature station data, climatology of maximum temperature is prepared for the period 1981-2010 to find out the normal maximum temperature of the day for a particular station. Thereafter, IMD declares a heatwave over the region as per its definition. The health impact of heat waves typically involves dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The IMD uses four colour codes for weather warnings. Green means no action needed, yellow refers to watch and stay updated, orange means be prepared while red alert means take action. Watch video

The name Chikhaldara is a corruption of Keechaka Daara, which translates to the valley of Keechaka - an evil chieftain who was killed by the strongest of the Pandavas, Bhima, for harassing DraupadiThe region was discovered by Captain Robinson of the Hyderabad regiment in 1823, who was mesmerized by the beauty of the region. The tiger reserve offers a variety of safaris and other sighting and adventure activities along with some good stay optionsAfter wildlife, the next important point of interest on the itinerary are the forts of Gwalighar and Narnala forts. It has since been ruled by the Marathas and the British and has also been the scene of several key battles between the Marathas and the British. Shahnoor or Narnala fort was built by the Gond dynasty in the 10th century AD, but was later on ruled by Mughals and Rao Rana Narnal Singh after whom it is named. Look out for the wonderful fort gate as well as the huge cannon in the fort premises!Other attractions in the region include Saakhar lake and Devi point which is of religious significance. Other lakes include Bir lake as well as Kaala pani lake. Also an important feature of the region are the view points, the famous among them being the Hurricane point, Mojiri point and Panchbol - an echo point. A day after Delhi Police arrested Bengaluru-based climate activist Disha Ravi on charges of sedition for having allegedly edited a toolkit which Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg shared on Twitter, two more activists came under the spotlight –– Nikita Jacob and Shantanu Muluk. Who are they and what is the police alleging? Nikita Jacob is a practicing lawyer in the Bombay High Court and Shantanu Muluk is an environmentalist who had quit his aerospace engineering job around six months back, to focus on the parched regions of Vidarbha and Marathwada. From the press conference held on 15 February, we know that the Delhi Police had named the three accused –– Disha Ravi, Nikita Jacob and Shantanu –– as the editors and creators of the toolkit who laid out an “action plan” for 26 January. Their aim? To create misinformation and disaffection against the lawfully enacted government. The police further revealed that a Zoom meeting took place on 11 January, attended by Jacob and Shantanu, and organised by the Poetic Justice foundation, which the police deems as a pro-Khalistani organisation, in which ‘the modalities of the Global Day of Action were worked out'.In her defence, Nikita Jacob has stated that the toolkit was simply an information pack, that her intent was never to incite violence and there was nothing illegal in what she did.Shantanu Muluk, who was granted transit anticipatory bail on 16 February after a Delhi court issued a non-bailable warrant against him, had said in his bail plea before the Bombay High Court: "...Vendetta has trickled down from politics to the house of a common man making a mockery of the rights and principles enshrined in the Constitution of India. That such vendetta, which is the dark face of authoritarianism, is the real ‘toolkit' for devastation of not only of democracy but also basic human rights.”Naturally, the statements of the police and the accused contrast... so in this episode we are going to try and see where the law stands on toolkits and sedition, and how the law should treat Shantanu and Nikita Jacob's case.Producer and Host: Himmat ShaligramGuest:Vakasha Sachdev, Legal Editor for The Quint Editor: Shelly Walia Music: Big Bang FuzzListen to The Big Story podcast on: Apple: https://apple.co/2AYdLIl Saavn: http://bit.ly/2oix78C Google Podcasts: http://bit.ly/2ntMV7S Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2IyLAUQ Deezer: http://bit.ly/2Vrf5Ng Castbox: http://bit.ly/2VqZ9ur

In today’s Chai Time show we invite Bernadette White. Bernie is currently working as an Outreach Coordinator at the Center for South Asia at Stanford University. The other hat she wears is that of a doctoral student at Syracuse University, studying Sociology. Her research focuses on rural India, and more specifically, the social and political issues surrounding the discussions of farmers’ suicide. Her research has allowed her to gain experience conducting research internationally- with research trips to India. She has travelled to a lot of different cities in India and has done her fieldwork in the Vidarbha region in Eastern Maharashtra, India. Farmers in India became the center of considerable concern in the 1990s when the journalist P Sainath highlighted the large number of suicides among them. Official reports initially denied the farmer suicides but as more and more information came to light the government began to accept that farmers in India were under considerable stress. It is a very serious issue and our guest today has been doing an extensive research in this field. We will talk about this sensitive issue, plus we will talk to Bernie about how she got interested in India and Indian culture. We will also like to know about her hobbies, favorite movies and of course her favorite Hindi movie songs. We will listen to what Bernie likes to listen.
