Tender, innocent, honest, explorative, curious, uncertain but clear - this episode is all of this and more. And not by chance. The guest, Ireen Thomas, decides to go with the flow and responds to almost each and every word in my questions and we discover a beautiful mind who is willing to understand things and adopt new perspectives if they seem beneficial. I really loved the humanity she exhibited in all her answers - there are no stock answers even if some of the questions might be typical at times. What a wonderful guest! What an amazing conversation. Do check it out. For the video, check www.youtube.com/c/thevaluesworkshop

This week on The About Her Podcast, Abigail chats with Emily Jensen about The Sabbath and Rest. Emily is an author, a podcaster, and the co-founder and content director of Risen Motherhood. One of her primary aims as an author and podcaster is to apply timeless Gospel truths to all areas of life. You can read how she applies these timeless truths to life in Risen Motherhood: Gospel Hope For Everyday Moments, a book she co-authored with her sister-in-law Laura Wifler, and Social Sanity in an Insta World. I threw a pretty deep topic at Emily in this podcast episode, and I am so impressed by how she answered my many questions. It was the late great media theorist Marshall McLuhan who said that first we shape our tools and then our tools shapes us. He went on and said, we become what we behold. Any of us who have used social media know that McLuhan was spot on. . . and if we don't know it, we need to. Today, we take a look at how social media is shaping and misshaping us as moms, dads, kids, and youth workers. Listen in as we chat with Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra about her own story and her practical and Gospel centered book, Social Sanity in an Insta World, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.

PRODUCER'S NOTE: Due to technical problems with recording this episode, we had to utilize the internet backup files. The conversation isn't affected, but the audio and video quality is lower than usual. Apologies! Can I be a woman born in a man's body? Is it possible that God could have made a mistake when he made me? Is the idea of gender merely a social construct that I should reject in order to be my authentic self? These questions are the kind of thoughts that many teenagers and young adults in our culture are considering. Many people find it shocking to discover that those who identify as LGBTQ+ are on a sharp increase in Gen Z. Discerning Christian ask why, how can we respond, and what do we do to protect our children from gender confusion. My guest on today's show is Sarah Zylstra, a writer at The Gospel Coalition, who has done excellent work investigating this topic to answer these questions. Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra is a senior writer and faith-and-work editor for The Gospel Coalition. Do you ever find yourself struggling to escape the grasp of social media on your life? Then you are certainly not alone in that. This week Sarah Zylstra, senior editor of the Gospel Coalition, joins us to discuss the impact of social media on young adults, particularly young adult women. She reminds us of the various detrimental effects social media can have on our relationships, time management, body image and overall mental capacity. Sarah then gives insight on how we can take back the power from social media and ensure we are using it in a Christ-centered manner.
A lot of the advice we hear about how to use social media—don't be mean, don't humblebrag, share Bible verses—is good. But it also doesn't feel like enough. Social media is a huge beast, and we need more than “set a timer” (as helpful as that can be) to help us navigate the world of social media in a gospel-centered way.Pulling in part from TGC's book, Social Sanity in an Insta World, panelists Amy Gannett, Blair Linne, and Laura Wifler explore ways of using social media to the glory of God. They cover a wide range of ideas, from the big picture (figure out why you're logging on) to the daily details (to re-ground yourself after scrolling, try concentrating on your five senses), all while offering encouragement to those who might be burned out by social media.
