In this episode of Connected Leadership Bytes, Andy Lopata revisits the episode with LaTonya Kilpatrick, Worldwide Director of Technology Research and Innovation at Colgate Palmolive. LaTonya, a chemist by training, discusses the critical role of strong partnerships, both internal and external, in her work to develop better oral care solutions. She emphasises that effective partnerships begin with understanding each party's motivations, curiosity, and what they can gain from collaboration. LaTonya describes how her team often partners with external academics for data analysis or with companies that need help navigating oral care regulations and metrics. She also highlights internal partnerships with product development and IT teams to bring ideas to fruition. She explains that the decision to build a competency or partner depends on project needs and whether the partnership is a long-term investment for the company. A major challenge lies in bridging the communication gap between different departments (e.g., scientists vs. IT) and ensuring all contributors, especially implementers, feel appreciated and recognised for their role. LaTonya maintains that transparency and authentic communication are also crucial to maintaining trust. She discusses how the most successful partnerships are with those who understand the value of the relationship. Finally, Andy and LaTonya talk about her passion to engage children in science, emphasising her role as a scientist and mentor. Her goal is to help them by making science fun and approachable early on, inspiring children to see science in their everyday lives, using simple experiments. Key Takeaways: Understanding Motivations: Successful partnerships begin with truly understanding what motivates each party, what their goals are, and how they can benefit from thecollaboration. Build vs. Partner: Decisions on whether to build internal expertise or partner externally should be made on a project-by-project basis, considering long-term value and needed expertise. Language and Communication: Bridging communication gaps between different departments or organisations is crucial. It is essential to adapt language, really listen, and find common ground. Appreciation is Key: Recognising and appreciating all contributors, including those in supporting roles, is vital for building and maintaining trust and morale. Research is Essential: Those seeking partnerships must demonstrate they understand the needs and value of the potential partner by doing their research and presenting it in the right perspective. Science is Everywhere: Science can be made fun and approachable for children, fostering their natural curiosity.   Connect with Andy Lopata: Website | Instagram | LinkedIn | X/Twitter | YouTube Connect with LaTonya Kilpatrick: Website |LinkedIn | The Financial Times Guide to Mentoring Episode 178: Building Strong Partnerships' LaTonya Kilpatrick

A topic we returned to often in this podcast is the dire need for independent technology researchers to have access to platform data. Without it, we cannot understand the extent of the harms and effects of social media on people and on society, and we cannot understand the limits of those harms. This makes it difficult to respond in acute moments such as elections, and to understand issues such as the relationship between tech platforms and social cohesion, or mental health, or any number of the other issues policymakers care about. In this episode, Justin Hendrix speaks with two people on the front lines of the fight to secure access to data, including advocating for Meta to do better in light of the impending deprecation of CrowdTangle, a tool used by researchers study Meta's products, including Facebook and Instagram. How to Defend Independent Technology Research from Corporate and Political Opposition

In October 2022, a group of researchers published a manifesto establishing a Coalition for Independent Technology Research. “Society needs trustworthy, independent research to relieve the harms of digital technologies and advance the common good,” they wrote. “Research can help us understand ourselves more clearly, identify problems, hold power accountable, imagine the world we want, and test ideas for change. In a democracy, this knowledge comes from academics, journalists, civil society, and community scientists, among others. Because independent research on digital technologies is a powerful force for the common good, it also faces powerful opposition.”In the months since that document was published, that opposition has grown. From investigations in Congress to lawsuits aimed at specific researchers, there is a backlash particularly against those who study communications and media, especially where the subjects of that research are often those most interested in advancing false and misleading claims about issues including elections and public health. Justin Hendrix, who is a member of the coalition, caught up with Brandi Geurkink, who was hired as the coalition's first Executive Director in December 2023, to discuss its priorities.

Jaime Browning, BS. DC. DCCJPThis episode highlights the significance of research in upper cervical care and emphasizes its positive impact on a person's health. Dr. Jamie Browning discusses the connection between neck alignment and various health issues, such as migraines, TMJ disorders, and IBS. She also discusses using tools like pupillary constriction measurement and thermal imaging to assess patients and track improvements. Dr. Browning emphasizes the need for accessible research resources and collaboration among healthcare professionals to bring hope to patients with complex conditions. Dr. Browning's background is that she played volleyball from seventh grade all the way through college. She is a former Navy reservist, so she had a lot of battle wounds that I had to deal with. Her main symptoms were TMD, IBS, and Migraines. When the atlas bone misaligns, it pulls and tugs on the jaw, leading to TMJ issues. Upper cervical chiropractic can correct this alignment and relieve jaw and digestive issues. The healing process for migraines takes time, as it involves tissue regeneration and the recalibration of fluid flow in the brain. The ultimate goal of chiropractic care, especially upper cervical chiropractic, is to help patients adapt to their environment.Discussing the different Upper Cervical Techniques such as NUCCA, Blair, and Knee-Chest. All these techniques are gathered under one umbrella in the ICA Upper Cervical Council. As the president of the Upper Cervical Council, Dr. Browning's call to action for Upper Cervical Chiropractors is to be more involved in research and to pool their resources: time, talents, and treasures. The Upper Cervical Council aims to make research sharing more accessible and affordable by providing a bibliography to members.Good research validates the things that we know, it shows how reliable our care is. The other thing it does is we get to test parameters and learn even more about what this care does.Research also proves the reliability of technology, such as measuring the pressure behind the pupils, using temperature differential measurements for dysautonomia, safe, effective, and reliable use of Cone Beam CT scans, and much more. The ultimate goal of chiropractic care, especially upper cervical chiropractic, is to help patients adapt to their environment. Most of the world does not have Upper Cervical available, but due to good research and standards, it is now possible to take it to Europe and eventually other parts of the world. To contact Dr. Brownig:drjaimebrowning@gmail.comjbrowning@sherman.edu.To find out more about the ICA Upper Cervical Council:https://www.icauppercervical.com/To find a doctor near you: https://www.icauppercervical.com/find-a-doctor/To find out more about Sherman College of Chiropractic:https://www.sherman.edu/

We all have strengths that guide us to success. My strengths come in quickly understanding and connecting forward thinking leaders to resources, people, and experiences that can transform their lives. My dream is to cocreate Treedom, a global community of nature based retreat spaces and ecosystems, to help people connect with nature, each other, and their visions for the chapter ahead. I help forward thinking entrepreneurs, executives, and emerging leaders connect, collaborate, and coelevate through the Future Advisory Board collective coaching programs and project based collaborations. I'm focused on creating mutually beneficial and symbiotic relationships with passionate pioneers of the virtual frontier through DAO creation, tokenization, and launching projects and companies that will positively impact the world. Raised by hippy, nomadic parents, I travelled across the country as a child and met people from all walks of life. From Pennsylvania Amish Country to the desert of Arizona, to the hills of West Virginia, to the beaches of Florida, change has been the only constant in my life. As a young child, creativity and non-conformity were highly valued in my family. My right brain dominance and weaker (in comparison to my brother and sisters incredible artistic abilities) artistic talent lead me to be known as the “smart” one in the family. That label, along with the desire to rebel against my parents lack of financial planning and live one day at a time mentality, drove me to value making money and earning recognition above everything else in life. I moved out of my mother's house at 15, and graduated from High School at the age of 17, with my first year of college completed through dual enrolling during my senior year at Edison College (Now Florida Southwestern). From there, I earned full scholarships to the University of Central Florida through Florida Bright Futures and worked up to three jobs at a time to pay my rent and earn spending money. I graduated when I was 20 with a BA in Advertising and Public Relations in just three years. My internal drive that pushed me to finish college early, start a career and get married at a young age also propelled me to apply for Graduate school. A year later, I received my MS in Business Management from the University of Florida. Over the years, I have held Director of Marketing positions with a specialty coffee franchise and civil engineering company, owned my own successful marketing agency, was a top performing sales account executive and sales manager for Gartner, the world's largest Technology Research and Advisory Services company, earned my real estate license, created branding and marketing campaigns for small businesses and full-time focus as the Global Program Manager for the Global CISO Executive Summit at Evanta, a CEB Company. I've realized that life is not all about making money and climbing a corporate ladder (profound, I know). I am learning to harness my strengths, get out of my own way, and create a life of happiness, freedom, and flexibility. Not surprisingly, I thrive on change, challenge, and creativity. I am a problem solver, entrepreneur, coach, story-teller, match-maker, creator of my own destiny, lover of learning, adventurer, opportunity seeker and above all else a devoted wife and mother. Today I talked to Jim Wilson about his book (co-authored with Paul Daugherty) Radically Human: How New Technology Is Transforming Business and Shaping Our Future (HBR Press, 2022). Technology has evolved from device intelligence to data intelligence (big data) to now the new stage of a more human-centric approach where the user/worker's needs, wants and biases are being taken into account to make technology easier to deploy and more of an equal partner. That's the progression Jim Wilson champions in this book and on-air conversation. Covid-19 ushered in not only a host of human behavior changes, e.g., hybrid work arrangements and the Great Resignation, the pandemic also spurred the Great Acceleration as companies rushed to adopt technology that will transform their business practices. How to do so in a way that will democratize technology, empowering employees and rewarding customers along the way, is the challenge that Wilson addresses here. After all, technology innovations that don't also safeguard and enhance trust will instead create “algorithm aversion,” and undercut the promise of how technology can benefit companies, societies and individuals alike. Jim Wilson is the Managing Director of Thought Leadership & Technology Research at Accenture Research. Two, the employment implications of low code - does it free up the time of engineers? Does it threaten some jobs? And three, what this means for the adage "everybody should learn to code" - with templatisation, does everyone really need to learn to code? How can innovation in digital technology arise in this scenario? ALTRnative Perspectives is a podcast by the Centre for Applied Law and Technology Research, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy. He is Michael Lippert, Head of Technology Research at Baron Capital and portfolio manager of the firm’s high-growth stock oriented Baron Opportunity Fund Morningstar’s one caveat about the fund’s performance has been its volatility, as it focuses entirely on companies with high rates of growth, not on the mitigating effects of returning capital to shareholders with stock buybacks or dividends. CoinGeek Conversations

If Bitcoin SV succeeds in the way its developers and entrepreneurs hope, it will be the biggest change in technology infrastructure since the mass adoption of the Internet more than 20 years ago. But will ordinary users be open or resistant to that kind of change?Lee Rainie of the Pew Research Centre studies public attitudes to technology and has been responsible for more than 650 reports based on Pew surveys of people's online and Internet usage. So how does he see the prospects for Bitcoin and blockchain entering the mainstream? “We live in an environment where people's trust in each other and in institutions is declining, particularly in the developed world,” Rainie says, “and so blockchain has been held out as a really interesting alternative way to rebuild trust, using technology as the centrepiece of mediating interactions between people ...Some of the most interesting applications of blockchain are not about cryptocurrency, they're about trusted systems of documentation and smart contracts.”If that promise could attract users by mitigating their fears about trust, Rainie does not go so far as to suggest that technology could solve all the problems: “this can't just be done by technology. You can't flip a switch and all of a sudden trust is restored and systems operate beautifully. You need human actors to design those systems, monitor those systems, explain those systems.”In terms of mass adoption, Rainie says that it may not be a question of waiting for the ‘killer app’ that will act as a tipping point for wide acceptance of the technology: “it possibly won't be sort of a big bang moment where all of a sudden a critical mass of people are using it. And then the rest of the world says, 'oh, we've got to get on board'. It might be more evolutionary.”It could be that adoption will first happen at an industrial level - more ‘behind the scenes’ - in sectors like supply chain and the financial markets. Then, unlike the Internet, where users are aware of the technology, people may not even realise that they’re using blockchain: “there will be ways in which people's finances absolutely are underpinned by blockchain technology. There are ways in which their interactions with government agencies, when they want to get a national identity card for their newborn child - now, that's going to be probably a blockchain system. But if you ask them in a survey, 'are you a blockchain user?' they might not say yes.” If blockchain isn’t adopted by a ‘pull’ factor of attraction, it could be nudged forward by reservations about the tech giants, and the whole ‘surveillance capitalism’ model of targeted advertising and data collection. Pew’s latest research didn’t poll the public, but instead was one of a series of studies that Rainie has ordered as Director of Internet and Technology Research, soliciting views about the future of technology from almost 700 experts, whom the report describes at “'technology innovators, developers, business and policy leaders, researchers and activists”. The study found that the experts “very explicitly invoked how blockchain can be a restorative to people having confidence that their data were treated well and that their interactions with other people were being chronicled and mediated in a responsible way, that there were fewer opportunities for bad actors to step into the middle of the process.”In that respect then, Pew is reporting an optimistic view of the prospects for blockchain among a wide range of people who should be well placed to predict the future. On the other hand, it seems the experts themselves aren’t too confident about their own powers of prediction. Rainie investigated that in a previous study: “one of the things that we asked in years gone by was whether these experts

In the first of their two wins, ITRI took the Edison Award Gold in the Adhesives category for their product Celluad, a product developed in part by Dr. Lin, Research Director of Materials Research and Development at the company. Dr. Lin joined Justin Starbird and explained how Celluad was created using cellulose, an organic material found in plant cell walls, this adhesive is low-cost, strong, water-resistant, and environmentally friendly. Compatible with existing manufacturing processes, Celluad provides excellent adhesion when applied to plywood, flooring, and lumber core board. Most importantly, ITRI's adhesive is completely free of formaldehyde, a carcinogenic chemical found in the resin used to construct most artificial wooden boards. In this way, ITRI offers an adhesive solution that is effective and affordable as well as healthier for manufacturers, consumers, and the environment. The second award ITRI received this year was bronze in Cellular Research for iKNOBEADS, the world's first and only biomimetic magnetic beads capable of fighting cancer by stimulating, expanding, and strengthening T cells through imitation of the immune system. Dr. Chen also joined Justin and worked directly on their development, explains that the knobby shape which gives iKNOBEADS their name and makes them so effective was the result of a happy accident that occurred while experimenting with different bead sizes when it was found that the addition of texture to the beads increased expansion rate. Because of this, iKNOBEADS not only fight cancer but do so with an incubation period reduced by three to four days, reducing opportunities for contamination and saving money. Listen as Dr. Lin and Dr. Chen talk through innovation, commercialization and what winning an Edison Award has meant for ITRI.

On this week's Investor's Marketcast, John Gillin and Scott Garliss welcome on Dan Ives, Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Technology Research at GBH Insights. Dan is a highly regarded tech analyst, and may be best known for his Wall Street-high price target on Netflix, predicting its stock will hit $500 as a “virtuous cycle” picks up.  Scott and John ask Dan about the current growth picture in the U.S., and in the technology sector specifically. Dan explains why current growth stories are being underappreciated, despite high earnings expectations, and which names have great growth pictures. Scott and Dan discuss the current mergers and acquisitions (M&A) landscape, and whether any notable M&A could be on the horizon in the tech space.  John asks Dan about beaten-up IBM, and if there's any organic growth left in the stock. Dan explains why he's long-term positive on IBM, even as he’s watching the company closely during what he expects to be a pivotal 6-9 months. Shifting to China, Scott asks Dan about the possible effects of the trade war. Dan tells Scott that he thinks the biggest impact is going to be on the supply chain for companies like Apple, and semiconductors.  After the interview, Scott and John discuss the Chinese Yuan's recent fall, and what this could mean for U.S. markets.  John asks Scott about President Trump's comments on the Federal Reserve, and Scott explains why raising interest rates is a good sign for the U.S. economy.  Scott tells listeners what to look for during the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker's visit to the U.S., and why talks of a compromise could move the market higher.

Space Traffic Management and Enabling Sustainable Commercial Development of Space

Recorded in Washington, DC, on June 11, 2018. Over the last decade, there has been growing interest and investment in commercial space activities. Companies are developing new and innovative space applications and services that could deliver significant societal, economic, and national security benefits on Earth. However, some of these ventures face obstacles from outdated, overly restrictive, or non-existent licensing and government oversight processes. At the same time, the growing congestion in critical orbit regimes and potential to launch tens of thousands of new satellites over the next decade have heightened concerns about orbital debris and the long-term sustainability of space.  As a result, the US government has spent much of the last decade debating national policy on space traffic management (STM), which includes both reform of the government oversight regime and improving civil space situational awareness (SSA) to increase knowledge of the space environment and space activities. This debate appears to be coming to a conclusion, as the Trump Administration readies a policy decision on STM. However, significant parts of their decision will require both changes to existing authorities and regulations and funding from Congress to implement, a matter on which Congress has yet to decide. This luncheon panel discussion brought together experts from the Trump Administration, academia, and think tanks to discuss  the challenges driving interest in STM, regulatory and administrative considerations, and ideas for how the Trump Administration and Congress can best implement an STM regime that enables sustainable commercial development of space. Speakers Opening Remarks: Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX 21), Chair, House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Panelists: John Giles, Col, USAF; Senior Policy Advisor, National Space Council Theresa Hitchens, Senior Research Associate, University of Maryland's Center for International and Security Studies Diane Howard, Professor of Commercial Space Operations/Spaceflight Ops, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Moriba Jah, Director of Advanced Science and Technology Research in Astronautics Program, University of Texas at Austin Brandt Pasco, Attorney & Fellow, Hudson Institute Brian Weeden, Director of Program Planning, Secure World Foundation More details, including transcripts, can be found at the event page on the SWF website.

Lee Rainie, Director of Internet, Science and Technology Research at Pew Research Center, believes we are in the middle of the fourth major technology-based revolution of the 21st century. The first was Internet broadband, Rainie says, which has skyrocketed from zero percent of Americans using it to 73 percent. The second was the explosion of mobile phones—today 77 percent of Americans have smartphones and 51 percent have tablets. The third was social media, which 69 percent of Americans use. The fourth revolution, which we are currently in the middle of, is the rise of the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence. When Pew first began tracking Internet usage, in March of 2000, fewer than half of American adults were on the Internet. “We’ve never seen a suite of consumer electronic technologies be adopted this fast with this much impact,” Rainie says. Rainie views the story of the sharing, or platform, economy as paralleling the growth of the Internet. From the earliest days of the Internet, people used it swap things, says Rainie. While 72 percent of Americans have used some kind of sharing or gig service, broadly defined, the percentage of people who have used ridesharing services (15 percent) or home sharing services (11 percent) remain more modest. Most Americans don’t think that new sharing services should be regulated with old regulatory frameworks, Rainie says, and the majority don’t think that service providers should be treated the same as traditional employees. Despite a growing backlash against the tech industry that has become more pronounced in the past year, most Americans say they couldn’t live without the Internet or smart phones, despite their drawbacks. “It’s as predictable as the sun rising the next morning,” Rainie says, “the role of technology and the enthusiasm for tech companies and tech inventors and innovators is really high in America. They still think it serves them well; they still like the ways in which they feel more productive. They feel more socially engaged; they feel like they learn new things; they feel like they can take better care of their health.”
